Wearable and washable light/thermal emitting textiles

Zhihui Tian,Heshan Zhang,Fei Xiu,Minjie Zhang,Jiahao Zou,Chaoyi Ban,Yijie Nie,Wenjie Jiang,Bin Hu,Juqing Liu

Electronic textiles (e-textiles) typically comprise fabric substrates with electronic components capable of heating, sensing, lighting and data storage. In this work, we rationally designed and fabricated anisotropic light/thermal emitting e-textiles with great mechanical stability based on a sandwich-structured tri-electrode device. By coating silver nanowire network/thermal insulation bilayer on fabrics, an anisotropic thermal emitter can be realized for smart heat management. By further covering the emissive film and the top electrode on the bilayer, light emitters with desirable patterns and colors are extracted from the top surface via an alternative current derived electroluminescence. Both the light and thermal emitting functions can be operated simultaneously or separately. Particularly, our textiles exhibit reliable heating and lighting performance in water, revealing excellent waterproof feature and washing stability.

Wettability Gradient-Induced Diode: MXene-Engineered Membrane for Passive-Evaporative Cooling

Lei Leqi,Meng Shuo,Si Yifan,Shi Shuo,Wu Hanbai,Yang Jieqiong,Hu Jinlian

Engineering MXene into electrospun nanofibers can effectively enhance its thermal emissivity and conductance, and the unidirectional water transport of the wettability-gradient-induced-diode (WGID) membrane displayed diode-like properties with wettability gradient by tailoring the water contact angle of each single layer. The WGID membrane could achieve a cooling temperature of 1.5 °C in the “dry” state, and 7.1 °C in the “wet” state, with high emissivity of 96.40% in the MIR range, superior thermal conductivity of 0.3349 W m −1  K −1 . Zero-energy-consumption for personal cooling management via multiple heat dissipation pathways, including thermal radiation, conduction, and evaporation.

Durable and robust broadband radiative cooling coatings for multi-temperature scenarios

Qihao Dai,Xinyu Tan,Guiguang Qi,Xiongbo Yang,Bowhen Li,Zheng Guo,Junmei Zhang,Weiwei Hu,Songshan Li,Cadao Nguyen,Xiaobo Chen,Yequan Xiao,Peng Xiang

Passive daytime radiative cooling presents a promising avenue for revolutionizing cooling solutions by reflecting sunlight and radiative heat to outer space without consuming energy. Previous studies often focus on a single temperature scenario, neglecting the complexity of real-world applications in which the target object may have heat sources. Here, we have successfully prepared a Cooling Paint for Multi-Temperature Scenarios (CPMTS) by incorporating nanometer boron nitride into the photocured monomer Tricyclodecane Dimethanol Diacrylate (DCPDA). CPMTS exhibits excellent broadband thermal emittance (∼0.955), reflectance (∼0.778, from 300 nm to 2.5 μm), and thermal conductivity (∼0.51 W m −1  K −1 ). Notably, it achieves a maximum cooling of 20.1 °C and 8.8 °C under ∼790 W m −2 and ∼507 W m −2 of solar irradiation in the absence and presence of a 1 W heat source continuously heating, respectively. Continuous and significant radiative cooling performance has been observed on cloudy days or at night. CPMTS shows excellent radiative cooling performance in practical application scenarios. Excellent ageing resistance, adhesion, stability, and color matching ability make CPMTS expected large-scale application through spray or brush. This research provides a potential solution for cooling in real-world diverse temperature scenarios. The obtained radiative cooling coatings demonstrate scalability and durability in practical applications.

Development of Ca3(PO4)2 inorganic thermal-control coating used in harsh space environments

Jinpeng Lv,Xiangyu Wen

Passive thermal control coatings (TCC's) have been widely used to tune the thermal equilibrium of spacecraft surfaces since 1970s. Development of new TCC's with improved thermo-physical properties and radiation hardness are essential to the space assets that fly in harsh environments. Herein, we fabricated calcium orthophosphate based inorganic white paint, which possess relative low solar absorptance (α s ) of 0.095 and thermal emittance (ε H ) of 0.88. Noticeably, the Ca 3 (PO 4 ) 2 coating shows excellent space radiation tolerance and thermal control capacity. After performing 90 keV proton irradiation at a fluence of 4×10 15  cm -2 , the α s of ZnO coating increases from 0.160 to 0.213 while the Ca 3 (PO 4 ) 2 coating rises from 0.095 to 0112, which only degrades one third (0.017) of the ZnO coating (0.053). Furthermore, after performing simulated solar irradiation test, the surface temperature of Ca 3 (PO 4 ) 2 paint is 14.4 °C lower than that of ZnO coating, evidencing its prominent thermal-optical performance. Besides, we also found that Ga 2 O 3 based liquid-glass white paint is a good candidate for thermal equilibrium of spacecraft.

Scalable and sustainable hierarchical-morphology coatings for passive daytime radiative cooling

Li Shuliang,Du Guomin,Pan Min,Wang Xiaoliang,Dong Xinyi,Huang Ting,Hu Dingyuan,Ren Tao,Li Xue,Chen Hong,Mai Xianmin

Passive daytime radiative-cooling materials (characterized by a high solar reflectance and thermal emittance) exhibit a cooling effect under direct sunlight with zero energy consumption, thereby decreasing the demand for air conditioning. Although various well-designed radiative-cooling materials have been reported to date, their syntheses are environmentally harmful and unsuitable for large-scale operation (as they involve complicated, high-cost, or solution-processed methods). In this study, a hierarchical-morphology coating for large-scale radiative-cooling applications was constructed by a one-step, inexpensive, solution-free, and environmentally friendly strategy. The hierarchical morphology (comprising nanospheres and micropores randomly dispersed throughout a polymer matrix) was fabricated through simple mechanical stirring (without the use of templates); no solvents or by-products were produced during the manufacturing process. The optimal coating showed high emissivity (95.1%) in the atmospheric-window band, strong solar reflectivity (94.0%), and a cooling power of 62.94 W m −2 (according to field tests). Moreover, covering the roof of a model with the as-prepared hierarchical-morphology coating reduced the average roof temperature by 11.5 ℃ (according to outdoor tests). According to simulations, the coating enabled annual cooling-energy-consumption savings in the range of 14.5–41.2% for typical buildings located in different climatic regions, indicating high potential as an energy-saving building-envelope material. Graphical Abstract A one-step, scalable and sustainable strategy has been developed to fabricate hierarchical-morphology coatings for passive daytime radiative cooling.

A dual-selective thermal emitter with enhanced subambient radiative cooling performance

Wu Xueke,Li Jinlei,Xie Fei,Wu Xun-En,Zhao Siming,Jiang Qinyuan,Zhang Shiliang,Wang Baoshun,Li Yunrui,Gao Di,Li Run,Wang Fei,Huang Ya,Zhao Yanlong,Zhang Yingying,Li Wei,Zhu Jia,Zhang Rufan

Radiative cooling is a zero-energy technology that enables subambient cooling by emitting heat into outer space (~3 K) through the atmospheric transparent windows. However, existing designs typically focus only on the main atmospheric transparent window (8–13 μm) and ignore another window (16–25 μm), under-exploiting their cooling potential. Here, we show a dual-selective radiative cooling design based on a scalable thermal emitter, which exhibits selective emission in both atmospheric transparent windows and reflection in the remaining mid-infrared and solar wavebands. As a result, the dual-selective thermal emitter exhibits an ultrahigh subambient cooling capacity (~9 °C) under strong sunlight, surpassing existing typical thermal emitters (≥3 °C cooler) and commercial counterparts (as building materials). Furthermore, the dual-selective sample also exhibits high weather resistance and color compatibility, indicating a high practicality. This work provides a scalable and practical radiative cooling design for sustainable thermal management.

Self-cleaning energy-free PDMS@KL film for daytime radiative cooling

Xiongbo Yang,Jialin Geng,Ruizhen Xu,Xinyu Tan,Meng Liu,Shijin Nie,Shumin Yao,Songshan Li,Junmei Zhang,Yiteng Tu,Giguang Qi,Yulong Qiao

Passive daytime radiative cooling (PDRC) technique is desirable for outdoor application as it can cool objects without energy consumption. In this work, a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) film incorporated with Kaolin particles was fabricated by a simple and low-cost method. Integrating with high sunlight reflectance and great thermal emissivity, the sample displayed a remarkable PDRC property by yielding an average temperature drop of 12.8℃ compared to the sub-ambient temperature. Additionally, the superhydrophobicity of the sample enabled the surface of the sample free-contamination after water rinse. The superhydrophobic properties can be maintained even after 60 days of UV light continuous exposure.

Double-layer radiative cooling coating comprising a UV reflective layer and hollow TiO2

Mujia Feng,Zhilin Xia,Zhi Liu,Tu Zhou,Huajun Sun,Xiaofang Liu

Radiative cooling is a passive cooling strategy that requires no external energy input. It can provide continuous cooling for buildings and reduce energy consumption. In this study, a double-layer radiative cooling coating (DHRC) was designed with a bilayer structure. Fluorocarbon resins were used as film-forming substances for the coatings. Hollow rutile TiO 2 and 200 nm diameter ZrO 2 were used as fillers in the lower and upper layers, respectively. The cooling coating exhibited excellent reflective radiation performance, with a solar reflectance (R solar ) of 92.9 % and an emissivity (ε 8-13 μm ) of 95.13 %. In outdoor tests, the average and maximum temperature reductions relative to ambient conditions were 8.44 ℃ and 12.3 ℃, respectively. The water contact angle was 98°, and after 25 days of UV irradiation, the R solar only decreased by 1.09 %. The cooling power calculated using MATLAB was 123.44 W∙m −2 , which was 22.45 W∙m −2 more than that of the commercial cooling coating. The EnergyPlus building energy consumption simulation results showed that among 15 cities around the world, buildings using cooling paints achieved energy saving rates of more than 7 % in 10 cities. The results showed that the DHRC effectively reduced temperature, improved energy efficiency in buildings, and exhibited resistance to staining and aging. This coating provides new ideas for future research on the design and innovation of building cooling coatings.

Construction of Reversible Cross-Linked Polyurethane Composite Coating with Recyclability and Passive Radiative Cooling Performance

Weiwei Fan,Qiang Gao,Zhonghui Wang,Jun Xiang,Huan Wei,Haojun Fan

In this work, a type of modified aluminum oxide-titanium dioxide composite filler (MAT) was employed as a high refractive index and wide electron band gap filler and incorporated into reversible cross-linked polyurethane (RCPU) with disulfide bonds to prepare passive radiative cooling coating. After modification by a 3-isocyanatopropyltrimethoxysilane coupling agent, the urethane and siloxane chains were found to covalently bond between aluminum oxide and titanium dioxide, which imparts the MAT filler a good dispersion level in the RCPU matrix. The as-prepared RCPU-MAT10 coating with 10 wt % of the MAT filler possessed desirable solar reflectance and thermal emittance in atmospheric transparency windows of 0.874 and 0.977, respectively, resulting in a subambient daytime cooling of 8.7 °C (solar light irradiation is 814 W/m2) and a nighttime cooling of 4.2 °C under outdoor environments. Taking advantage of the dynamic exchange feature of disulfide bonds, RCPU-MAT10 exhibited good recyclability behavior under heating (100 °C) for 10 min. More encouragingly, the recycling efficiency in passive radiative cooling performance for RCPU-MAT10 still remained above 95% after three cycles.

Flexible and multifunctional composite films based on rare earth phosphors as broadband thermal emitters for high-performance passive radiative cooling

Ruiming Tan,Wangyang Hu,Xin Yao,Nan Lin,Peng Xue,Shiqing Xu,Gongxun Bai

Passive daytime radiative cooling (PDRC) has been widely used in environmental protection, energy conservation and cooling. However, most PDRC designs primarily focused on improving the daytime cooling effect while ignoring the problem of nighttime overcooling. Here, we designed a flexible and multifunctional composite film doped with rare earth phosphors, which has high solar reflectivity and high infrared emissivity. During the daytime, it realizes subambient cooling of ≈11 °C at an average solar radiation density of 827.74 W m−2. Remarkably, it addresses the problem of nighttime overcooling by maintaining a minimal temperature difference of only 0.5–1.5 °C. Moreover, the rare earth phosphors doped in our design not only effectively compete with titanium dioxide nanoparticles for ultraviolet absorption during the day, but also exhibit significant luminescence at night, providing a useful color reminder effect. These findings highlight the exceptional properties of the radiative cooler and promote its applications in a variety of fields.

Ordered Porous Polymer Films for Highly Efficient Passive Daytime Radiative Cooling

Yu Zhang,Tong Wang,Xue Mei,Min Chen,Limin Wu

Constructing porous polymer films for passive radiative cooling has proved an efficient way to dissipate heat to cold outer space in the form of thermal radiation and concurrently reflect incident sunlight without additional energy input. Nevertheless, most researches focus on randomly distributed pores, which cannot precisely control the pore arrangement and size and may restrict the optical properties. Herein, an ordered porous poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) film comprising three-dimensional (3D) ordered micropores and highly interconnected nanopores is presented via a sacrificial template method. It exhibits prominent solar reflectance (0.94), long-wave infrared (LWIR) thermal emissivity (0.95), and low thermal conductivity (0.044 W m–1 K–1). The ordered porous PMMA film can achieve a sub-ambient temperature drop of up to 10.6 °C during midday under an average solar irradiance intensity of ∼829 W m–2 and promisingly realize a maximum daytime cooling power of ∼75.6 W m–2. This work will significantly influence the design of porous structural radiative cooler and is conducive to understanding the underlying relationship between pore arrangement, pore size, and optical/thermal performance, facilitating the development of high-performance passive daytime radiative cooling porous polymer films.

MOF-Integrated Hierarchical Composite Fiber for Efficient Daytime Radiative Cooling and Antibacterial Protective Textiles

Xuan Cai,Liang Gao,Jizhuang Wang,Dan Li

Incorporating passive radiative cooling into textiles is an effective way to improve individual personalized thermophysiological comfort for the human body. Based on radiative cooling textile design, rational functionalization further facilitates practical applications, especially for medical protective products with customized requirements. Herein, we present a hierarchical polyurethane/metal–organic framework (MOF) composite nanofiber membrane with an integrated radiative cooling effect and photocatalytic antibacterial property. Fabricated by a scalable electrospinning method, the hierarchical nanofiber membrane shows high solar reflectance of 97% and improved thermal emissivity of 93% attributed to the abundant chemical bonds in ZIF-8 nanoparticles, rendering a temperature drop of ∼7.2 °C under direct sunlight and ∼5.5 °C at night. In addition, the photocatalytic activity of ZIF-8 ensures a 96% bacterial mortality rate for preventing bacterial infection. In practical application, our composite fabric can prevent superheating by 4.4 °C compared with the traditional protective suit under direct sunlight. Along with its anti-infection ability, the composite fabric is desirable for medical protective textiles. The innovative integration of passive radiative cooling design and functional MOFs breaks through the traditional cooling mode and provides huge substantial advantages for smart textiles and personal cooling applications.
