Diselenide-containing poly(ε-caprolactone)-based thermo-responsive hydrogels with oxidation and reduction-triggered degradation

Yan Zhang,Ying Xu,Chao Wei,Yuanying Zhang,Liu Yang,Zhongchen Song,Meidong Lang

Herein, novel multi-responsive injectable polyester hydrogels were reported based on the diselenide-containing poly(ε-caprolactone) copolymers ((mPEG-PCL-Se) 2 ). The (mPEG-PCL-Se) 2 solution remained a free-flowing state at ambient temperature but spontaneously turned into a semisolid hydrogel upon heating to physiologic temperature. The phase transition temperature was examined to be dependent on the composition and aqueous concentration of the copolymers. More importantly, the thermo-responsive hydrogels were endowed with oxidation and reduction-triggered degradation by the incorporation of diselenide groups. Accordingly, the degradation of poly(ε-caprolactone)-based hydrogels was greatly improved and the rate of degradation was well regulated by the concentration of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) or glutathione (GSH). This superior stimuli-responsive degradation could lead to an enhanced drug release of encapsulated drug (Doxorubicin, DOX). Thus the oxidation and reduction-triggered degradable diselenide-containing poly(ε-caprolactone) hydrogels would offer great potential for the controlled drug delivery.

Microgel-Crosslinked Thermo-Responsive Hydrogel Actuators with High Mechanical Properties and Rapid Response

Yanyu Yang,Ying Xiao,Xiang Wu,Junjie Deng,Rufang Wei,Ashuang Liu,Haiyang Chai,Rong Wang

Smart hydrogels responsive to external stimuli are promising for various applications such as soft robotics and smart devices. High mechanical strength and fast response rate are particularly important for the construction of hydrogel actuators. Herein, tough hydrogels with rapid response rates are synthesized using vinyl-functionalized poly( N -isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) microgels as macro-crosslinkers and N -isopropylacrylamide as monomers. The compression strength of the obtained PNIPAM hydrogels is up to 7.13 MPa. The response rate of the microgel-crosslinked hydrogels is significantly enhanced compared with conventional chemically crosslinked PNIPAM hydrogels. The mechanical strength and response rate of hydrogels can be adjusted by varying the proportion of monomers and crosslinkers. The lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of the PNIPAM hydrogels could be tuned by copolymerizing with ionic monomer sodium methacrylate. Thermo-responsive bilayer hydrogels are fabricated using PINPAM hydrogels with different LCSTs via a layer-by-layer method. The thermo-responsive fast swelling and shrinking properties of the two layers endow the bilayer hydrogel with anisotropic structures and asymmetric response characteristics, allowing the hydrogel to respond rapidly. The bilayer hydrogels are fabricated into clamps to grab small objects and flowers that mimicked the closure of petals, and it shows great application prospects in the field of actuators.

A thermoresponsive hydrogel with a wide-range tunable phase transition temperature triggered by small molecules

Jian Wang,Wen Sun,Ming He

Thermoresponsive polymer hydrogels have great potential in the fields of smart window and information encryption due to the drastic changes in transmittance caused by the phase transition at specific temperatures. The synthesis of thermoresponsive hydrogels with a wide range and sensitive temperature response is current research goal. Here, we demonstrate a polymethacrylamide (PMAAm) hydrogel with the upper critical solution temperature (UCST) ranging from 62 to −1°C by simply polymerizing the monomer in different concentrations of acetic acid (Ac) solutions. The hydrogel exhibits sensitive temperature response with a temperature hysteresis within 2°C and can maintain stable transmittance changes after 200 cycles of testing. The phase transition mechanism is revealed by combining ultraviolet visible spectra, differential scanning calorimetry, Fourier transform infrared spectra, dynamic light scattering and scanning electron microscope measurements. This thermoresponsive hydrogel can be applied in smart window and information encryption. The smart window prepared with the hydrogel had a very high Δ T lum (The luminous transmittance modulation, 94.4%), ensuring daytime illumination and privacy protection at night. Meanwhile, the smart window exhibits an excellent thermal insulation capability for energy-saving buildings. The hydrogels with different UCST are flexibly combined to display designed patterns at different temperatures, demonstrating the ability of the hydrogels to be used for information encryption.

Xuxu Yang,Chengrui An,Shuting Liu,Tingyu Cheng,Varitsara Bunpetch,Yixiao Liu,Shurong Dong,Shijian Li,Xiaohui Zou,Tiefeng Li,Hongwei Ouyang,Zhaohui Wu,Wei Yang

Developing soft devices for invasive procedures bears great importance for human health. The softness and large strain actuation of responsive hydrogels promise the potential to fabricate soft devices, which can attach on and assist to the function of organs. The key challenges lie in the fabrication of soft devices with robust actuating ability and biocompatibility to the attached organ. This paper presents a solution that integrates the thermoresponsive hydrogel membrane with flexible electronics and silk scaffold into a balloon-like soft device. As an example, the actuation assisting function of this soft device for shrinking an animal bladder is presented. The mechanical behaviors of the balloon-like soft device are experimentally and theoretically investigated. The concepts are applicable to other applications such as soft implants, soft robotics, and microfluidics.

Thermo-responsive hydrogel evaporator via In-Situ chromogenic strategy for high-efficiency solar desalination with robust salt resistance

Ju Lv,Lang Pan,Yawei Zhu,Xinyue Zhang,Liujin Yang,Xiudie Wang,Xueqiong Yin

Interfacial Solar Evaporation (ISE) presents a sustainable approach for freshwater production, yet challenges persist in achieving efficient salt resistance and long-term stability. This study introduces a Thermoresponsive Hydrogel (TRH) photothermal evaporator using a novel strategy that did not require an additional light absorber. The TRH was synthesized by copolymerizing a thermosensitive monomer, isopropylacrylamide, with acrylamide using chitosan as the matrix, followed by an in-situ chromogenic reaction through crosslinking with Genipin. The TRH system demonstrates exceptional evaporation performance with a water evaporation rate (WER) of 2.63 kg·m −2 ·h −1 and a photothermal conversion efficiency of 95.0 % in a 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. Notably, it maintains stable evaporation rates above 2.60 kg·m −2 ·h −1 during extended 7-day cyclic operation and sustains > 1.91 kg·m −2 ·h −1 in hypersaline environments (15 wt% NaCl). Comparative analysis reveals the TRH’s evaporation capacity surpasses that of non-chromogenic counterparts, while exhibiting superior salt rejection characteristics. These findings establish the TRH as a promising solution for high-efficiency desalination of seawater and hypersaline brines through solar-driven evaporation, addressing critical challenges in sustainable water purification technology.

Tunable thermoresponsive hydrogels for temperature regulation and warning in fruit and vegetables preservation

Libin Sun,Da-Wen Sun,Liang Xu,You Tian,Zhiwei Zhu

Fresh fruit and vegetables usually suffer from quality deterioration when exposed to inappropriate temperatures. Common energy-input temperature regulation is widely applied but there remain challenges of increasing energy consumption. Passive temperature management regulates the heat transfer without energy consumption, showing a sustainable strategy for food preservation. Here, thermoresponsive hydrogels were constructed by incorporating NaCl and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) micelles into a poly(N-isopropylacrylamide- co -acrylamide) (P(NIPAM- co -AM)) network. Due to the excellent mechanical properties and reversible thermochromism at 14 °C and 37 °C, Gel-8 wt%-NaCl could inhibit temperature rise and avoid sunburn damage to peppers under direct sunlight by blocking the input of solar energy and accelerating moisture evaporation. Additionally, hydrogels could act as a feasible sensor by providing real-time visual warnings for inappropriate temperatures during banana storage. Based on the self-adaptive thermoresponsive behaviour, the prepared hydrogels showed effective performance of temperature regulation and quality preservation of fruit and vegetables.

Light-Regulated Capillary Force Self-Assembly of Nano-Printed Pillars for Chiroptical Metamaterials

Sizhu Wu,Xinkai Li,Xin Liu,Haijian Hu,Rui Dong,Jincheng Ni,Deng Pan,Yanlei Hu,Chenchu Zhang,Chao Chen,Yachao Zhang,Haojie Xia,Dong Wu,Zhaoxin Lao

Capillary force self-assembly (CFSA) technology unfolds great potential in the fabrication of functional micro/nanostructures. To date, most self-assembly methods focus on monolithic microstructure manipulation yet it remains a challenge to achieve precise localized control over the CFSA process of micro/nanostructures. Herein, a light-regulated CFSA is proposed to realize the localized precise control of microstructures, leveraging on the synergistic effect of photothermally-responsive hydrogel and self-assembly technique. The micropillars with asymmetric cross-linking densities can readily prepare by applying a rationally designed laser and laser-exposing dosage, thereby realizing the on-demand steering of their bending directions. Significantly, owing to the giant capillary force deriving from the evaporating water, above micropillars can successfully assemble into highly-ordered chiral structures. Simulation coupling with fundamental hydrodynamics enables to shed light on the light steering principle over pillar's actuations. Last, on the basis of vortical dichroism spectra analysis, the chiral characteristics of light-regulated self-assembly including the chiral as well as the achiral self-assembled microstructures are successfully deployed. This strategy provides an avenue for fabricating the localized controllable self-assembly at the microscale and will bloom the field over metamaterials, microsensors, chiral optics, and so on.

A multifunctional skin-like sensor based on a 3D printed thermo-responsive hydrogel

Zhouyue Lei,Quankang Wang,Peiyi Wu

An effective and general strategy is developed to prepare a multifunctional and mechanically compliant skin-like sensor by incorporating a 3D printed thermo-responsive hydrogel into a capacitor circuit. The prepared intelligent skin shows a sensitive and stable capacitance–temperature response, and also exhibits very high pressure sensitivity within 1 kPa, allowing it to sense body temperature, gentle finger touches and finger bending motion. This work not only demonstrates that stimuli-responsive hydrogels are promising candidates for artificially intelligent skins, but might also enrich the design of skin-like sensors for future artificial intelligence, wearable devices and human/machine interaction applications.

Influences of two sizes of nano-Fe3O4 on stereolithography 3D printing properties of gel photoresist for photothermal-responsive hydrogel

Xuyan Yue,Meichen Liu,Yanzhi Xia,Zhong Xiong

Nanocomposite hydrogels enable augmented properties, functions, and responsive behaviors. In the field of stereolithography 3D printing of the photothermal responsive nanocomposite hydrogel, the influence of the size of nano-Fe 3 O 4 on 3D printing properties is significant due to the sedimentation, but the relevant research is rare. In this study, for the fabrication of photothermal responsive hybrid hydrogel, poly( N -isopropylacrylamide-acrylamide)/nano-Fe 3 O 4 [P(NIPAM-AM)/nano-Fe 3 O 4 ] gel photoresist was prepared and digital light processing (DLP)-based 3D printing as one of the popular stereolithography 3D printing technology was utilized. The influences of two sizes of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles (10 and 50 nm) denoted as nano-Fe 3 O 4 (10) and nano-Fe 3 O 4 (50) on DLP 3D printing properties of the gel photoresist were investigated in detail. The results reveal that the gel photoresist with nano-Fe 3 O 4 (10) obtained long exposure time for the basic prototype, low overcuring degree ( O d ), and good uniformity of nanoparticles in hybrid hydrogels, while those with nano-Fe 3 O 4 (50) had the merits of printing high 3D sample due to the low release fore. Unfortunately, the gel photoresist with a high content of nano-Fe 3 O 4 such as 3.11 wt% failed in 3D printing of a high and uniform gel cylinder. A strategy of preparing P(NIPAM-AM)/nano-Fe 3 O 4 gel photoresist with mixed nano-Fe 3 O 4 (10) and (50) for 3D printing was proposed. Using the gel photoresist (nano-Fe 3 O 4 content: 3.11 wt%) with two sizes of nano-Fe 3 O 4 mixed with 50% each and the exposure time of 8 s, a gel cylinder with a height of 1 cm was successfully printed with uniform nano-Fe 3 O 4 distribution and low O d values (≤ 1.17%). Further, a biomimetic hydrogel octopus was 3D printed by using the gel photoresist with mixed nano-Fe 3 O 4 and thereafter a near-infrared-light-driven waving motion of octopus tentacle was achieved successfully.

Alkynyl-functionalization of hydroxypropyl cellulose and thermoresponsive hydrogel thereof prepared with P(NIPAAm-co-HEMAPCL)

Lei Miao,Jiwen Hu,Mangeng Lu,Yuanyuan Tu,Xin Chen,Yinwen Li,Shudong Lin,Fei Li,Shengyu Hu

A ternary system thermoresponsive hydrogel, poly( N -isopropylacrylamide- co -hydroxyethyl methylacrylate polycaprolactone)/hydroxypropyl cellulose (or P(NIPAAm- co -HEMAPCL)/HPC), was prepared via “alkynyl/azide” click chemistry between the azide modified graft copolymer P(NIPAAm- co -HEMAPCL-N 3 ) and the alkynyl modified HPC (or alkynyl-HPC). The structures of P(NIPAAm- co -HEMAPCL-N 3 ) and alkynyl-HPC were characterized by 1 H NMR, SEC and FT-IR, and the results demonstrated that the mole ratio of the alkynyl and azide functional groups, and the feed ratios of HPC, PCL, and PNIPAAm could be easily adjusted. The incorporation of PCL and HPC dramatically enhanced the compression modulus of the P(NIPAAm- co -HEMAPCL)/HPC hydrogel, which ranged from 500 to 1000   g/cm 2 . Due to the immiscibility of HPC and PCL, a heterogeneous and semicontinuous structure was observed via SEM. The incorporation of HPC accelerated the water absorption rate and enhanced the hydrogel's ability to shed water. The swelling–deswelling and compressive properties could also be adjusted by changing the feeding ratio. The hydrogel exhibited reversible swelling–deswelling behavior after three “swelling–deswelling” cycles.

Photothermal responsive hydrogel for adsorbing heavy metal ions in aqueous solution

Zhonghua Zhao,Zhao Zhang,Zhan Zhu,Xinquan Zou,Yu Zhao,Jinshuo Shi,Jikui Wang

A solar-driven hydrogel composed of photothermal polydopamine (PDA) nanocoating, linear chitosan (CTS), and thermoresponsive poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAM) crosslinking network was successfully synthesized to remove heavy metal ions from contaminated water. The as-prepared PDA/CTS/PNIPAM (DCN) hydrogel can achieve hydrophilic/hydrophobic phase transition driven by solar energy when the volume phase transition temperature (VPTT) was reached. The micromorphology, wetting behavior, swelling behavior, compression properties, photothermal responsiveness, and adsorption properties of hydrogels were studied one by one. The cross-linking of the controllable active nanogel (ANG) along with the modification of PDA endowed DCN hydrogel with a regular and interpenetrating porous structure, which enabled DCN to have excellent elasticity and withstand up to 80 % compressive deformation. And the hydrophilic groups of CTS and PDA reduced the water contact angle of DCN hydrogel to 13°, which was conducive to resisting the erosion of oil substances. The excellent photothermal conversion enabled DCN hydrogel to reach VPTT in only about 11 min under a simulated sunlight source. In addition, DCN hydrogel had excellent selective adsorption for Pb 2+ and Cu 2+ , and the maximum theoretical adsorption capacities were 42.63 mg/g and 38.55 mg/g, respectively. It was also found that the volume phase transformation of hydrogel significantly enhanced its ability to resist external interference and effectively prevented the loss of heavy metal ions.

Thermoresponsive hydrogel dressings for precision drug release under physiological conditions

Qinqin Cui,Kaiwen Zhang,Xu Fei,Cong Wang,Sheng Cheng,Yao Li,Longquan Xu

Thermally responsive hydrogel-based drug delivery systems encounter significant challenges, such as imprecise thermal response thresholds and incomplete drug release. In this study, maleic anhydride-modified cyclodextrin (MA-β-CD) is incorporated into poly (N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAM) hydrogel via covalent bonding for the purpose of gallic acid delivery. The introduced isopropyl group forms a host–guest interaction with the hydrophobic cavity, effectively modulating both the phase transition temperature and the contraction rate of PNIPAM. Due to the host–guest interactions, the phase transition temperature of conventional PNIPAM hydrogel (32 °C) is adjusted to fall within the physiological temperature range (36 °C-38 °C) relevant to human wounds for precise regulation of drug release. Moreover, when the hydrogel attains its phase transition temperature of 37 °C, it demonstrates a volume shrinkage rate of 55.6 % and a drug release efficiency of 95.34 %. Compared with the hydrogel without MA-β-CD (with a shrinkage rate of 5.3 % and a drug release rate of 35.31 %), the modified PNIPAM hydrogel exhibits a 10.5-fold increase in shrinkage and a 2.7-fold enhancement in drug release. Notably, the hydrogel dressing possesses remarkable antimicrobial efficacy and excellent biocompatibility. In a mouse model, it significantly accelerates wound closure and promotes the regeneration of a fully stratified epidermis. This work is of guiding significance for the preparation of high-performance thermo-responsive hydrogel dressings.
