A series of Sr 2.99-x (PO 4 ) 2 :.01Er 3+ /xYb 3+ ( x = .02, .04, .06, .08, .10) phosphors in the presence of impurity Tm 3+ were synthesized by high temperature solid-state method, and X-ray diffraction results show that these samples are pure R-3 m(166) space group phase. The upconversion luminescence (UCL) of Er 3+ and impurity Tm 3+ under 980-nm laser excitation were investigated, and the results show that the intense blue UCL of impurity Tm 3+ and thermal enhancement of 2 H 11/2 → 4 I 15/2 of Er 3+ simultaneously exist. When Er 3+ doping concentration is kept at .01, both the blue UCL intensity of impurity Tm 3+ and green and red UCL intensity of Er 3+ reach the maximum at Yb 3+ doping concentration of .08. The thermal enhancement effect of 2 H 11/2 → 4 I 15/2 of Er 3+ was observed as high as 3.27 times from 303 to 723 K, which is because of lattice distortion and phonon-assisted transition. In addition, the optical temperature performance of Sr 2.91 (PO 4 ) 2 :.01Er 3+ /.08Yb 3+ sample was studied, and the maximum absolute temperature sensitivity was calculated as .00623 K −1 at 538 K. This study suggests that Sr 3 (PO 4 ) 2 :Er 3+ /Yb 3+ phosphors in the presence of impurity Tm 3+ have a promising application prospect as optical temperature sensor at high temperature.

A series of Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped Cs3BiSr(P2O7)2 (CBSPO) phosphors with significant thermal enhancement were successfully prepared using the solid-state method and the thermal-enhancing effect was studied in detail. When the temperature increased from 303 to 723 K, the upconversion luminescence (UCL) emission intensities of 2H11/2 → 4I15/2 and 2H11/2 + 4S3/2 → 4I15/2 of Er3+ in CBSPO:0.1Er3+/0.2Yb3+ were enhanced 22.81 and 10.06 times under 980 nm laser excitation, respectively. Meanwhile, the UCL color of the sample obviously changed from orange to green with the increase in temperature. Furthermore, the UCL thermal enhancement mechanism was demonstrated, which originates from phonon-assisted transitions. In addition, the maximum absolute temperature sensitivity for CBSPO:0.1Er3+/0.2Yb3+ was calculated to be 0.01026 K−1 at 563 K via luminescence intensity ratio (LIR) technology. All the results show that the CBSPO:Er3+/Yb3+ phosphors can be used for safety warning and temperature measurement at high temperatures.

The significant temperature response of lanthanide-doped up-conversion luminescent materials is typically characterized by a severe thermal quenching of the luminescence intensity at elevated ambient temperatures, which severely restricts materials’ capability in temperature sensing. Herein, the influence of matrix phonon properties on the remarkable thermal enhancement effect in the thermosensitive material NaLaMgWO6:Yb3+/Nd3+ is reported. It is elucidated that achieving a significant thermal enhancement of Nd3+ with a higher phonon energy oxide matrix is easier than a halide matrix, which has lower phonon energy by comparison with previous findings. Interestingly, the emission of thermally related levels gets enhanced to various extents through phonon-assisted thermal population. In light of this, a three-model thermometer is constructed based on luminescence intensity ratio (LIR) technology. Given that Sr and ΔE possess a positive correlation, it is feasible to acquire greater temperature monitoring sensitivity Sr in Nd3+, which has a larger ΔE. At 313 K, this thermometry model may achieve a maximum sensitivity of 2.84%·K–1. This work not only provides guidance for the selection of efficient near-infrared up-conversion material but also opens up a prospect for the realization of ultrasensitive thermally coupled luminescent thermometers.

Thermally enhanced upconversion luminescence (UCL) materials have obvious advantages in the various fields of optical temperature sensing, anti-counterfeiting, and display. Here, we report a novel thermal enhancement UCL phosphor of Ca 2 Gd 8 Si 6 O 26 :Yb 3+ ,Er 3+ (CGSO:Yb 3+ ,Er 3+ ). Benefiting from the thermally enhanced phonon-assisted effect, anti-Stokes sideband excitation of Yb 3+ , energy transfer from Yb 3+ to Er 3+ , and thermal population from selective energy levels of Er 3+ are promoted with increasing temperature, which contributes to the thermal enhancement UCL of 4 F 7/2 → 4 I 15/2 , 2 H 11/2 → 4 I 15/2 , and 4 I 9/2 → 4 I 15/2 radiation transitions of Er 3+ ions. In addition, the rarely thermal enhancement of near infrared emission at 870 nm observed may be attributed to the Yb 3+ -induced effect. Furthermore, thermal quenching occurs for 4 S 3/2 → 4 I 15/2 and 4 F 9/2 → 4 I 15/2 transitions due to thermally enhanced multiphonon relaxation and thermal population. The combination of thermal enhancement and thermal quenching effect, the ratiometric optical thermometer is constructed in the wide temperature range 303–723 K by leveraging of the thermally coupled energy levels 2 H 11/2 and 4 S 3/2 of Er 3+ . This optical thermometer shows excellent temperature measurement performances with a maximum relative sensitivity of 1.1 × 10 −2 K −1 at 303 K and high repeatability of 99 %. These findings indicate that CGSO:Yb 3+ ,Er 3+ phosphors with thermally enhanced UCL have great potential application for temperature sensing.
