Hydrophilic modification of methylcellulose to obtain thermoviscosifying polymers without macro-phase separation

Dianguo Wu,Jinliang Cheng,Xin Su,Yujun Feng

Methylcellulose (MC) has received considerable attention because of its thermogelation behavior in aqueous solutions upon heating; however, the accompanied macro-phase separation results in demixing and detriment of thickening power. To alleviate this drawback, a novel family of hydrophilically modified methylcelluloses (HMMCs) was prepared by introducing acylamino, carboxyl, and amino groups onto MC side chains. Above association temperature ( T ass ), MC solutions experienced obvious macro-phase separation and thermothinning phenomenon; on the contrary, HMMCs solutions exhibited thermo- and salt-thickening behaviors, and T ass could be adjusted from 44 °C to 87 °C by altering the nature of HMMCs or salt content in solutions. The mechanism to eliminate the macro-phase separation of HMMC stems from the balance between hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity. This work opens a new avenue for cellulose derivatives to sustain their thermoviscosifying ability and widen their applications in hostile environments.

Thermoviscosifying polymers based on polyether prepared from inverse emulsion polymerization

Mengmeng Wang,Gang Sun,Peihui Han,Xin Su,Yujun Feng

Thermoviscosifying polymers are attractive for enhancing oil recovery owing to their exceptional thickening power as temperature increases. However, the polymers reported to date show inadequacies including obligatory high polymer concentration to get the thermothickening ability because of their low molecular weight (MW), and inconvenient post-treatment due to the high viscosity after manufacturing. To overcome these drawbacks, inverse emulsion polymerization was used here for preparing polyether-based thermoviscosifying polymers (TVP-Ps) by grafting acrylic monomers onto triblock copolymers PEO–PPO–PEO. It was found the MW of final products could reach 8 million Daltons, making them thermoviscosifying at 0.2 wt %. The viscosity of polymerized inverse emulsions was as low as 175 mPa·s, leading to direct dispersing. The TVP-Ps containing Pluronic F127, F108, F68 all exhibited significant thermothickening behaviors in both aqueous solutions and brines, and the critical thermoassociative temperature could be tuned by changing the nature or amount of Pluronics. After aging at 45 °C for 60 days with equal initial viscosity, TVP-Ps shows 21% higher viscosity retention than the reference polymer without Pluronic, PAMA, and preliminary core flooding test demonstrated TVP-Ps can get 2.1% higher incremental oil recovery than PAMA. This work paves a new avenue for scaled-up preparation and potential use of TVP-Ps. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2018 , 134 , 46696

Probing the physicochemical interactions between thermo-thickening polymers and clay fluids for improve rheological performance

Lesly Dasilva Wandji Djouonkep,Huaizhi Tao,Lvyan Zhuo,Alain Pierre Tchameni,Lin Zhao,Binqiang Xie

The field of thermo-thickening polymer interacting with clay has long been shrouded in mystery and ambiguity. Despite numerous studies and investigations, the complex interactions, underlying mechanism and binding forces remain elusive, imposing further exploration and elucidation. In this study, three thermo-thickening polymers such as poly(acrylamide methylpropane sulfonic acid-co-N-vinylcaprolactam) (PNV), poly(acrylamide methylpropane sulfonic acid-co-N,N-dimethylacrylamide) (PDM), and poly(acrylamide methylpropane sulfonic acid-co-N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNP) with clay fluids (CFs) were investigated to gain deeper understanding of the underlying physicochemical interactions. Techniques such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), proton nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H NMR), and elemental analysis (EA) elucidated the structural properties, whereas turbidimetry and rheometric analysis elucidated the temperature-induced phase transitions. The interactions between the different polymer side chains and clay double-sheets were investigated through isothermal adsorption testing, probing chemisorption and hydrogen bonding tuned the chemical properties, whereas electrostatic forces (ionic/van der Waals) bind the physical properties as demonstrated by Zeta (ζ) potential, XRD , high-resolution spectroscopy (XPS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging. The addition of 0.2–1.5 wt% of the polymers induced significant effect on the rheological properties of CFs, with increase in low shear viscosity and plastic viscosity, attributed to the formation of gel-like structures at high temperatures. PNV/Clay (NVBF)-modified fluid demonstrated exceptional fluid thickening and suspension behaviors compared to linear PDM/Clay (DMBF) and PNP/Clay (NPBF)-modified fluids. In addition, NVBF exhibited significantly higher adsorption energies and basal spacings, along with more crystalline patterns suited to embed clay particles. Overall, the synergistic effect of the different polymer side chains with clay particles provides valuable insights on the mechanistic and enhancement of rheological properties of CFs effective as shale inhibition, viscosifier and wellbore stabilization.

Grafted copolymers based on HPMC with excellent thermo-viscosifying and salt-tolerant properties at low concentration for enhanced oil recovery

Pan Xiong,Yanyan Niu,Fanjun Meng,Qinglin Ma,Cui Song,Qian Zhang,Yuju Che

The conventional acrylamide-based polymers are greatly restricted under the reservoir conditions of high temperature and high salt due to their linear molecular structures. In this article, a grafted water-soluble copolymer based on hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC) with excellent thermal viscosifying and salt-tolerant properties at low concentration was prepared via the “graft from” method, with acrylamide (AM) and methyl allyl polyoxyethylene ether (HPEG) as grafted monomers . The structure of the copolymer was identified by 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy ( 1 H NMR), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The basic displacement properties of the copolymers under extreme conditions were systematically studied. The results showed that due to the symbiotic effects of the rigid heterocyclic structure of HPMC and the hydrophobic inter-molecular aggregation of thermosensitive HPEG units in the copolymer chain, the copolymer exhibited better thermal thickening ability (the viscosity enhancements changes from 7.1 to 19.9 times from 25 °C to 95 °C in brine solution with total salinity 9350.08 mg.L −1 ), salt resistance (the viscosity enhancements changes from 1.13 to 2.29 times with salts concentration from 0.0 wt% to 2.0 wt% at 85 °C), shear tolerance (the viscosity retention rate was from 18.6% to 24.2% at 1000s −1 ) and anti-aging properties (the viscosity retention rate up to 73.7% at 65 °C for three weeks) than polyacrylamide at low concentration (0.2 wt%). Furthermore, the polymer flooding test showed that the copolymer yielded a higher recovery rate of 23.2% higher than that yielded by polyacrylamide (14.5%), elucidating that the copolymer synthesized herein was suitable for enhanced oil recovery in reservoirs with severe conditions.

Prevention Strategy of Cement Slurry Sedimentation under High Temperature. Part 1: A Polymer with Continuous Thermo-Thickening Behavior from 48 to 148 °C

Xin Chen,Chengwen Wang,Yanji Wang,Huan Wang,Ruihe Wang

Traditional thermoresponsive polymers with amphiphilicity exhibit acute thermo-thickening behaviors through phase transition and cannot be used as stabilizer to prevent high-viscosity liquid from viscosity reduction versus increasing temperature. Therefore, this study aims to develop a water-soluble polymer that has both thickening ability and continuous thermo-thickening ability in a wide temperature range. Inspired by the researches about hydrophobically associating polymers, a novel thermo-thickening polymer with strong hydrophobicity (HTP) has been synthesized, which consists of acrylamide (AM), 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS), and a hydrophobic monomer with surfactant character (SHM). HTP has good thermal stability and moderate resistance to the salt and alkali. In particular, HTP exhibits a continuous thermo-thickening behavior from 48 to 148 °C and can mitigate the consistency reduction of cement slurry under high temperatures. A series of experimental results (including environmental scanning electron microscope, gel permeation chromatography, differential scanning calorimeter, and pyrene fluorescence probe) indicate that the microstructure changes of HTP molecules in solution determine the thickening and thermo-thickening behaviors of HTP. The thickening behavior of HTP is due to the generation of spatial molecular networks in solution. The formed networks become more tangled and larger along with increasing HTP concentration resulting in a higher viscosity of solution. Under higher temperature, the tangled HTP molecular chains may stretch and fabricate much larger and denser networks causing the thermo-thickening behavior of HTP. It is hoped that the thermo-thickening polymer presented in this paper can be applied in various fields.

A Hydroxypropyl Methyl Cellulose-Based Graft Copolymer with Excellent Thermothickening and Anti-salt Ability for Enhanced Oil Recovery

Sisi Wang,Pan Xiong,Xiaonan Liu,Fanjun Meng,Qinglin Ma,Cui Song,Qian Zhang,Yuju Che

Thermothickening polymers are a novel type of material developed for enhanced oil recovery applications in high-temperature and high-salinity oil reservoirs. However, the existing synthesis process of thermoviscosifying polymers is complex and of high cost, both of which limit the wide application of thermoviscosifying polymers. In this study, a thermothickening water-soluble polymer (PHAD) with a low concentration was synthesized by a “graft from” method, with acrylamide and diacetone acrylamide as grafted monomers and hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose as the backbone chain. The basic parameters for PHAD copolymers were systematically studied in comparison with their homopolyacrylamide counterpart. The results show that the PHAD copolymers exhibited excellent thermothickening ability even when the polymer concentration was 0.2 wt % (total salinity is 9350.08 mg·L–1) upon increasing the temperature from 25 to 90 °C, where the apparent viscosity enhancement changes from 4.0 to 13.3 times with increasing the diacetone acrylamide content in PHAD copolymers. The PHAD copolymers also showed good salt tolerance, thermal stability, and viscoelastic properties under harsh reservoir conditions, which are attributed to the synergistic effect of the rigid heterocyclic ring structure and hydrophobic intermolecular association of thermoresponsive monomers within polymer chains. Moreover, the core displacement experiment and etched glass microscopic model show that the PHAD copolymers have good migration in porous media. Due to its high sweep efficiency, the PHAD copolymer has a higher recovery factor (14.0%) than polyacrylamide (4.3%), which makes it more suitable for salt-tolerant and temperature-tolerant tertiary oil recovery chemicals.

Thermo-thickening behavior and its mechanism in a chitosan-graft-polyacrylamide aqueous solution

Yonggang Shangguan,Mingguo Liu,Lei Jin,Mengjie Wang,Zhengke Wang,Qiang Wu,Qiang Zheng

A novel thermo-thickening behavior of a chitosan-g-polyacrylamide (CS-g-PAM, GPAM) aqueous solution is reported for the first time in this work. The viscosity of GPAM aqueous solutions significantly increases above a critical temperature upon heating, as observed in dynamic and steady rheological experiments. Differing from the widely reported hydrophobic modified CS, GPAM was prepared by grafting hydrophilic polyacrylamide side chains onto the CS backbone, therefore the thermo-thickening behavior of the GPAM aqueous solution could not be explained by the usual thermo-thickening mechanism induced by the additional hydrophobic moiety or LCST segment. The origin of the thermo-thickening in GPAM solutions was explored using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) tests of the GPAM solution. A transformation from a hydrogen bonding (H-bonding) aggregate to a hydrophobic aggregate upon heating was confirmed to be responsible for the thermo-thickening. The heating initiates a transformation of large loose H-bonding aggregates into abundant small compact ones formed by self-assembled hydrophobic chitosan backbones, resulting in aggregate associations and thus flocculated aggregate networks. Some factors of the thermo-thickening were investigated and discussed in detail, including the heating history, concentration, grafting ratio, and length of the PAM side chain. Besides the influence caused by the heating history, this thermo-thickening process is influenced by kinetic factors, including the mobility of the macromolecule chains and the formation of new aggregate networks that are dependent on the number of hydrophobic clusters.

Dynamics and Rheological Behavior of Chitosan-Grafted-Polyacrylamide in Aqueous Solution upon Heating

Mengjie Wang,Yonggang Shangguan,Qiang Zheng

In this work, the transformation of chitosan-grafted-polyacrylamide (GPAM) aggregates in aqueous solution upon heating was explored by cryo-electron microscope (cryo-TEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS), and larger aggregates were formed in GPAM aqueous solution upon heating, which were responsible for the thermo-thickening behavior of GPAM aqueous solution during the heating process. The heating initiates a transformation from H-bonding aggregates to a large-sized cluster formed by self-assembled hydrophobic chitosan backbones. The acetic acid (HAc) concentration has a significant effect on the thermo-thickening behavior of GPAM aqueous solution; there is a critical value of the concentration (>0.005 M) for the thermo-thickening of 10 mg/mL GPAM solution. The concentration of HAc will affect the protonation degree of GPAM, and affect the strength of the electrostatic repulsion between GPAM molecular segments, which will have a significant effect on the state of the aggregates in solution. Other factors that have an influence on the thermo-thickening behavior of GPAM aqueous solution upon heating were investigated and discussed in detail, including the heating rate and shear rate.Keywords:chitosan-grafted-polyacrylamide;thermo-thickening;rheological;dynamic light scattering;cryo-electron microscope

Stability and Rheological Properties of the Hydroxypropyl Methyl Cellulose-Based Graft Copolymer/Halocynthia roretzi Drasche-Based Cellulose Nanocrystal/Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate Dispersion for Enhanced Heavy Oil Recovery

Yanyan Niu,Xin Fu,Yifei Zhu,Fanjun Meng,Qinglin Ma,Cui Song,Qian Zhang,Yuju Che

As a “green” displacing agent, nanocellulose is enriched, nontoxic, biodegradable, and environmentally friendly; therefore, the development and potential application of nanocellulose in oilfield chemistry have attracted widespread attention in recent years. In this study, a thermothickening copolymer synthesized in our laboratory called hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose-based graft (PHAD) copolymer was chosen to mix with Halocynthia roretzi Drasche-based cellulose nanocrystals (TCNCs), and anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) was added to improve the stability of the displacing agent. After the optimal SDS concentration was confirmed, PHAD/TCNCs/SDS dispersions containing 0.05–0.15 wt % TCNCs can be stable for a long time. Hence, the rheological performance of dispersions containing 0.05–0.15 wt % TCNCs was investigated systematically, and the results revealed that the PHAD/TCNCs/SDS dispersions had outstanding thermothickening ability, salt resistance, shear resistance, and viscoelastic property in a simulated oil reservoir circumstance, and the interaction mechanism among PHAD, TCNCs, and SDS was analyzed. Finally, a core flooding test was conducted, and the obtained data showed that the oil recovery of dispersion was 21.5%, which is higher than the control dispersion without TCNCs, confirming that the PHAD/TCNCs/SDS dispersions have significant practical application prospects.

Thermo-associating polymers based on cross-linked 2-acrylamido-methylpropane sulfonic acid, part A: Synthesis and solution behavior

Alain Pierre Tchameni,Binqiang Xie,Hui Zhang,Lin Zhao,Mingwang Luo,Jiantai Wen

A novel thermo-thickening hydrophilic copolymer (CGBA) was prepared by free-radical copolymerization of sodium 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid (NaAMPS) with a newly-synthesized thermo-sensitive macromonomer (BA) and cross-linking N,N’-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) in aqueous solution under optimal conditions. Its aqueous solution viscosity behavior with respect to temperature was preliminarily evaluated in comparison with its cross-linked sulfonated copolymer (CPAMPS) counterpart (without BA side-chains). Particular attention is dedicated to the thermo-thickening of the aqueous copolymer solutions as studied by the viscosity measurements . In pure water, and above 0.5 wt.%, CGBA manifested an abrupt macroscopic property above the critical association temperature ( T cass ), while CPAMPS exhibited shear-thinning behavior following an Arrhenius law under the same conditions. The composition and length of BA side-chains were identified as the key parameters to envision the self-assembling behavior of CGBA. The results obtained from complementary experiments, performed by proton nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H-NMR), Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and pyrene fluorescence showed the phase transition of BA side-chains above the T cass . In addition, well above the T cass (70 and 80 °C), the oscillatory shear experiments proved that the storage and loss modulus could be fitted with the single relation time Maxwell model at low frequencies. Furthermore, the magnitude of the thickening effect and the T cass could be modulated using external factors such as shear rates, salinity, and pH. This, in combination with the cost-effectiveness, and the need to further broaden the established theory of thermo-sensitive comonomer, make this copolymer especially interesting for application not only in polymer flooding, but also in drilling fluid.
