Tree-Inspired Structurally Graded Aerogel with Synergistic Water, Salt, and Thermal Transport for High-Salinity Solar-Powered Evaporation

Zhao Xiaomeng,Zhang Heng,Chan Kit-Ying,Huang Xinyue,Yang Yunfei,Shen Xi

Inspired by transport system in trees, a two-way water and salt transport mechanism is realized in a structurally graded aerogel, enabling simultaneous fast water uptake and salt rejection. The horizontally aligned pore channels near the surface achieve excellent heat localization by maximizing solar absorption and minimizing heat loss. The integrated water, salt, and thermal transports impart an impressive evaporation rate of 1.94 kg m −2 h −1 in a 20 wt% NaCl solution for 8 h without salt accumulation.

An elaborate balance between water transport and heat localization: phoenix-tail skirt inspired solar evaporator

Yuhan Lin,Jie Feng,Junjie Li,Qiang Wang,Yi He,Bo Sheng,Chuanyi Wang

The salt accumulation issue still remains a crucial challenge for the practical application of solar interfacial evaporation technology. Although enhancing water flow can promote the reflux of salt to bulk water, it also leads to the increased heat loss. Herein, an elaborate balance between salt resistance and heat localization was achieved over the “phoenix-tail skirt-like” structure solar evaporator by precise regulation of the structural parameter. For the optimal evaporator structure, the water evaporation rate of the simulated seawater under 1 kW·m−2 solar irradiance was 1.75 kg·m−2·h−1, accompanied by a solar-to-vapor energy efficiency of 101% due to additional energy harvest from the environment. Our research provided a new idea for the development of efficient and salt-resistant solar evaporation system.

Eco-friendly and recyclable evaporator based on discarded cigarette filters for high-efficiency and stable solar desalination

Gong Haoran,Chen Ze,Ge Can,Liu Yingcun,Li Wan,Le Pengtao,Xu Weilin,Xu Duo,Liu Keshuai

Solar steam generation is a promising technology to realize efficient and green desalination with a minimized carbon footprint. Discarded cigarette filters (CFs) cause significant harm to the environment but have good recycling potential for solar steam generation. In this study, an efficient thermally-positioned material (AC-CF), which uses renewable cellulose acetate CFs and an acetylene carbon black (AC) coating as an absorber, was developed for application as a solar steam generator. The AC-CF exhibited superhydrophilic characteristics and extensive solar absorption (approximately 100%). These properties enable the resulting AC-CF to exhibit rapid water transport and a strong photothermal conversion ability, with an outstanding evaporation rate of 1.81 kg m −2  h −1 under 1 sun illumination. The evaporator can remove most impurities and dye molecules during outdoor operation. Subsequently, the AC-CF evaporator was dissolved and recycled using N, N-dimethylformamide, and the recycling method yielded good results. This method for preparing absorbers reduces manufacturing costs and guides the potential practical application of recycled polymer resources using discarded CFs.

Enhancing thermal localization efficiency in a wood-based solar steam generator with inverted-pyramid structure

Jie He,Wenjuan Han,Hongjian Jiang,Taian Zhang,Xiaofeng Wang,Bo Wang,Chuntai Liu,Changyu Shen

Using solar energy for freshwater generation presents an effective and economical solution to address water shortages. Here, we introduced a structural strategy involving the incorporation of fixed-shape inverted pyramid-shaped grooves onto the evaporator surface. This innovation approach integrated delignified wood and MXene-based photothermal material to establish an interfacial solar steam generator (ISSG) dedicated to freshwater production. The carefully designed surface structure empowered the ISSG with remarkable heat localization capabilities, resulting in an exceptional steam generation capacity and resistance against salt deposition. The as-prepared sample, labeled MIDW-5, achieved an impressive evaporation rate of 1.927 kg m −2  h −1 . Furthermore, the simulation results by COMSOL are in agreement with the experimental results. Therefore, the incorporation of MXene into delignified wood, complemented by the imprinted structure, yields a high-performance evaporator with substantial potential for low-cost freshwater production.

Facile fabrication of low-cost, degradable double-layer chitosan/MXene solar vapor generator for enhanced thermal localization efficiency

Taian Zhang,Wenjuan Han,Jie He,Xiaofeng Wang,Bo Wang,Chuntai Liu,Changyu Shen

The interfacial solar vapor generator (ISVG) has emerged as a promising solution to address freshwater scarcity. The enhancement of thermal localization and suppression of salt crystallization are recognized as the design key factors for ISVG. In this study, we successfully fabricated a novel double-layer structure degradable interfacial solar vapor generator (DISVG) utilizing chitosan monolith (CM) with honeycomb porous morphology as carrier material, while employing MXene nano-sheets as solar absorber. The fabrication process involved facile chemical crosslinking and dip-coating methods. The incorporation of the double-layer structure in the DISVG plays a significant role in achieving effective thermal localization, thereby minimizing heat transfer to bulk water. Consequently, this feature results in a remarkable improvement in evaporation rate while simultaneously enhancing salt resistance. The DISVG demonstrated an outstanding evaporation rate of 3.88 kg m -2  h - 1 under 1 sun (1 kW m - 2 ) irradiation and effectively removed more than 99% of salt and dyes in water. Interestingly, even without the presence of MXene, the DISVG still achieved efficient evaporation at a rate of 2.63 kg m -2  h - 1 under 1 sun irradiation. Moreover, both DISVGs exhibited stability over extended period of operation without any rate decay. This study not only presents a novel approach for the progress of environmentally friendly and cost-efficient ISVG but also offers valuable insights into overcoming the trade-off between thermal localization and salt resistance in such systems.

Hollow Carbon Fiber Decorated by Nano Structure Surface for High-Efficiency Water Steam Generation

Xidong Suo,Jie Yang,Yanrong Zhang,Yuting Hao,Jiahui Yang,Hongtao Qiao

Utilization of carbon materials for harvesting solar energy is a green, feasible, sustainable, and promising way to manufacture freshwater from sewage and seawater. However, sunlight absorption efficiency, light to thermal conversion efficiency, and expensive cost are still limitations for large-scale solar steam generation. Here, a solar steam evaporator which is fabricated by carbonized willow catkins films and activated by different metal chlorides under nitrogen at 800 °C is demonstrated. Under the light irradiation intensity of one sun (1000 W m −2 ), water evaporation rate of the prepared evaporator is up to ≈2.17 kg m −2 h −1 , and the surface temperatures reach up to 50 and 91.7 °C under water-saturated and dry situations, respectively, indicating good steam generation ability and heat localization performance of the fabricated evaporator. The SEM, BET, DSC, and ICP-MS results show that such a high water evaporation rate of the prepared carbon materials is due to the typical tubular micro-structure, which decreases water enthalpy of evaporation and the water evaporation in the form of molecular clusters. This method of carbonized and activated willow catkins films provides a sustainable way for efficiently harvesting solar energy to produce fresh water from seawater and sewage.

Sustainable Self-Cleaning Evaporators for Highly Efficient Solar Desalination Using a Highly Elastic Sponge-like Hydrogel

Aqiang Chu,Meng Yang,Hongda Yang,Xueqi Shi,Juanli Chen,Jing Fang,Zhiying Wang,Hao Li

Interfacial evaporation using light-absorbing hydrogels offers efficient solar evaporation performance under natural sunlight, ensuring an affordable clean water supply. However, achieving light-absorbing hydrogels with durable and efficient utilization is still a challenge due to inevitable salt accumulation, a difficult-to-control surface morphology, and poor mechanical properties on the surfaces of hydrogel-based evaporators. In this work, a photothermal sponge-like hydrogel with a 3D interconnected porous structure was constructed using low-cost activated carbon as a photothermal material, as well as a double-network polymer chain as the basic skeleton using a simple foaming polymerization strategy. The sponge-like hydrogel evaporator showed tailored surface topography, adequate water transport, excellent elasticity and toughness, good salt rejection, and thermal localization properties. Under the irradiation of simulated sunlight (1.0 kW/m2), a high evaporation rate of 2.33 kg·m–2·h–1 was achieved. Furthermore, efficient salt self-cleaning behavior was achieved due to the fast ion diffusion within the 3D interconnected porous structures. Even in highly concentrated brine of 15 wt %, continuous and efficient water evaporation was still achieved. The excellent evaporation and salt rejection properties of this photothermal sponge-like hydrogel indicated its promising long-term sustainable utilization in seawater desalination.

Lignin hydrogel-based solar-driven evaporator for cost-effective and highly efficient water purification

Shan Jiang,Zhengze Zhang,Tong Zhou,Sicong Duan,Zhouli Yang,Yujun Ju,Chao Jia,Xiaoquan Lu,Fengjuan Chen

Solar-driven interfacial evaporation is an emerging water treatment technology for fresh water generation. However, poor thermal localization performance and rapid salt accumulation of the designed evaporator are the two factors, restricting the practical application. Here, a cost-effective lignin-based hydrogel with three dimensional meso /micro-porous structures is prepared by a facile and scalable crosslinking-polymerization strategy. Benefiting from numerous hydrophilic hydroxyls in lignin as well as 3D hierarchical porous structure, the designed hydrogel exhibits sufficient water supplement, effective water activation, as well as fantastic anti-salt accumulation performance. Our lignin hydrogel-based evaporator achieves a high and stable evaporation rate of 2.25 kg·m −2 ·h −1 for 24 h continuous operation without salt crystallizing and blocking, and shows a good stability in a wide range of pH value from 1 to 14. In addition, heavy metal ions , including Cu 2+ , CrO 4 2− , Co 2+ are efficiently removed from polluted water by electrostatic interaction with excess hydroxyl groups in the lignin hydrogel. Therefore, lignin hydrogel-based evaporator offers a cost-effective and long-term anti salt blocking strategy for solar-driven water purification.
