Following global trends in launching plastic bans driven by the increasing problem of non-degradable plastic polluting the environment, cellulose as an abundant natural polymer has gradually been exploited as an eco-friendly material. Nevertheless, there are two challenging problems to overcome: it is hard to dissolve and heat seal (self-bonding under heat and pressing) cellulose, which hinder cellulose materials from replacing plastic. Here, a binder-free method is proposed to realize the bonding of cellulose film without any other binders. The heat-sealable cellulose film was fabricated with a low bonding temperature of 78 °C and high transparency of 90%. Furthermore, glycerol and sorbitol were introduced in the cellulose film not only to reduce the brittleness of the films but also to assist the confined-solvent-driven process. Possible mechanisms of self-bonding and for the tunable concentration range of the residual solvent, which was crucial for the self-bonding, are reported. Additionally, a sealed cellulose-based band and bags were successfully made, indicating the potential of our heat-sealable cellulose films to overcome the inherent limitations of cellulose and boost the potential use of cellulose films as candidates to replace plastic.

Paper-based packaging materials have drawn increased attention under the rising awareness of environmental issues, whereas the barrier properties of paper are inadequate for food packaging. This study aimed to improve the barrier properties of paper by multi-coating method. Chitosan was coated as the first layer primarily to improve the oil resistance of the paper, whereas hydrophobic modified nanocellulose was applied as the second layer to render the paper water-repellent as well as to further enhance its oil resistance. Finally, zein was coated as the third layer to achieve the heat-sealing property of paper, and further enhance the water and oil resistance of paper. The obtained triple-layer paper had a high kit number of 12 and a low Cobb 60 value of 2.6 g/m 2 , and exhibited heat-sealing ability without any adhesive agent, which has a peel strength of 372.6 N/m. The triple layers also effectively improved the mechanical properties , and decreased the moisture and oxygen permeability of the paper substrate. Moreover, the triple-layer paper possesses good antibacterial activity and cytocompatibility. This study may provide inspiration for improving the barrier properties of food packaging paper and endowing it with heat-sealing property.

The present study aimed to develop heat sealable soybean polysaccharide (SSPS)/gelatin blend films intended to be used as edible food packaging materials. The films were fabricated by solution casting method using SSPS/gelatin blends and plasticized by glycerol. The results indicated that the heat sealability, stretchability and resistance to fracture of the films were significantly improved by blending SSPS with gelatin. The incorporation of gelatin into SSPS films also increased the thermal stability but decreased the water solubility, rigidity and water vapor permeability of the films. ATR-FTIR spectra and DSC results indicated strong interactions between SSPS and gelatin. The studies of optical properties, SEM, AFM, and XRD revealed that SSPS and gelatin were compatible to a certain degree in this blend system. Packaging tests confirmed that the blend films have showing potential as edible material in food packaging.

High density polyethylene/low density polyethylene (LDPE) antioxidant multilayer films were prepared by the co-extrusion method, and quercetin was incorporated in the LDPE layers as an antioxidant. The release rates of quercetin and the antioxidant activities of films were adjusted by changing the amount of ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) and diatomite added into the LDPE active layer. The morphologies of the films were observed by SEM, and the release property of quercetin was characterized by a high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method. The mechanical properties and heat sealing performance of the films were influenced to a certain extent by the amounts of EVA and diatomite in the active layers, while the barrier properties of the films were almost unchanged. The release of quercetin from the active films to a food simulant (95% alcohol) at 37°C was measured over 55 days. When the EVA amounts were 30% and 40% to 50%, the diffusion coefficients, D, were 10 −14 and 10 −13 cm 2 /s, respectively. In addition, the antioxidant activity values of the films were enhanced as the EVA amount increased. When adding diatomite into the active layer with 50% EVA, the diffusion coefficient, D, was 10 −11 cm 2 /s, and the quercetin was almost completely released with a partition coefficient, K, of less than 1. Meanwhile, the antioxidant activity values of the films exceeded 95%. The antioxidant release rate could be adjusted within a wide range; thus, these active films could be used for food antioxidant protection.
