Multisensory tactile systems play an important role in enhancing robot intelligence. A competent robotic tactile system needs to be simple in structure and easily operated, especially with multiple sensations, and have good coordinate ability like human skin. A novel multisensory tactile system for humanoid robotic hands is proposed, allowing the hand to identify objects by grasping and manipulating them. Robotic multifunction sensors based on skin-inspired thermosensation and structured with micro platinum ribbons partially covered with piezo-thermic silver-nanoparticle-doped porous polydimethylsiloxane membrane simultaneously and independently detect contact pressure, local ambient temperature, and thermal conductivity and temperature of an object. Multiple tactile information which is obtained by the robotic sensors is fused comprehensively based on neural network classification to identify diverse objects in uncertain and dynamic gripping with an object recognition accuracy of 95%. This multisensory system enables robotic hand to better interact with its environment, enhances robotic intelligence, and makes various complex tasks feasible for robots, such as sorting material or rescuing from fire or other disasters.

Real-time thermal sensing through flexible temperature sensors in extreme environments is critically essential for precisely monitoring chemical reactions, propellant combustions, and metallurgy processes. However, despite their low response speed, most existing thermal sensors and related sensing materials will degrade or even lose their sensing performances at either high or low temperatures. Achieving a microsecond response time over an ultrawide temperature range remains challenging. Here, we design a flexible temperature sensor that employs ultrathin and consecutive Mo1−xWxS2 alloy films constructed via inkjet printing and a thermal annealing strategy. The sensing elements exhibit a broad work range (20 to 823 K on polyimide and 1,073 K on flexible mica) and a record-low response time (about 30 μs). These properties enable the sensors to detect instantaneous temperature variations induced by contact with liquid nitrogen, water droplets, and flames. Furthermore, a thermal sensing array offers the spatial mapping of arbitrary shapes, heat conduction, and cold traces even under bending deformation. This approach paves the way for designing unique sensitive materials and flexible sensors for transient sensing under harsh conditions.

The advancement of highly sensitive and multifunctional sensors is beneficial for promoting flexible electronic devices and human healthcare management. Herein, inspired by the bionic leaf structure, a flexible PVA-PEDOT: PSS/TPU-CNT@MXene nanofibrous membrane (PPTCM NFM) with a biomimetic interwoven pattern was constructed to manufacture multifunctional sensors and heating devices using advanced two-nozzle electrospinning and nano-welding technology. Because of the synergetic impact of the interwoven multi-conductive structure among MXene, fragile PVA-PEDOT: PSS (PVA-PP) network, and strong TPU-CNT network, which allowed the distribution of tensile load to each conductive layer, the PPTCM NFM displayed high sensitivity (the maximum gauge factor of 1132.8 at 55 %). Due to the slide of the MXene nanosheets and the stretching of PVA-PP, the PPTCM NFM exhibits fast response and recovery times of 780/780 ms at a low detection limit (1 % strain) and high dynamic response performance (500 mm min −1 ) under modest strains which enabled its utilization in monitoring both small human motions like facial expressions and throat vibrations. Nevertheless, the TPU-CNT layer provided support under large strains, allowing for the detection of larger-scale movements such as bending of fingers, wrists, elbows, and knees. In addition, the PPTCM NFM makes it easier for the mutual conversion of finger pressure and language. Notably, the PPTCM NFM also possessed outstanding Joule heating capabilities and electrical signal responsiveness to solar light radiation. This interconnected conductive network membrane served as a novel platform material for health monitoring systems and efficient personal thermal management applications.

Flexible sensors have wide applications in wearable electronics, health monitoring, humanoid robotics, and smart prosthesis. Problems of temperature drift and bending/stretching strain are challenging and should not be neglected in practical applications of flexible sensors. Here, we report a novel temperature and strain compensation method for thermosensation-based flexible sensors. Thermosensation is human-skin-inspired perception, which inspires diverse flexible sensors (pressure sensor, flow sensor, temperature sensor, material sensor, proximity sensor, etc.) and multisensory electronic skin. Thermosensation-based flexible sensors utilize thin-film sensing thermistors to detect external physical stimuli through perceptions of the conductive and convective heat transfers toward the surroundings, which enables high-density integration of multisensations while minimizing complexity due to the uniform sensing principle of thermistors that have simple structures and easy operations. To overcome the negative effects of temperature drift and bending/stretching strain in these flexible sensors, we propose to monolithically integrate a compensating thermistor that has a similar geometric shape and is of the same material with the sensing thermistor into a Wheatstone-bridge feedback circuit. When the sensing and compensating thermistors meet geometric similarity, the compensations of temperature and strain are self-sustained by a feedback control of a circuit. The effectiveness is validated through theoretical analysis and experiment measurements. As examples, flexible pressure sensor and flexible flow sensor with temperature and strain compensations are demonstrated. Results indicate that the temperature and strain effects can be tremendously eliminated using the proposed compensation method, which is fast, self-sustained, and expedient to realize. The compensation method enriches competences of flexible sensors and demonstrates competitive advantages for diverse flexible and stretching applications of wearable electronics.
