The continuous improvement of papermaking technology has attracted widespread attention. However, the prevention of high-temperature decomposition and a subsequent decline in mechanical strength is still a significant challenge with current papermaking technology. Herein, a newly developed multilayer interconnected polyimide aerogel-based paper was successfully prepared via an anisotropic aerogel hot-extrusion strategy. Precursor solutions of highly rigid benzimidazole units containing intermolecular hydrogen bonds and linear rod-like benzimide units were first prepared. Anisotropic precursor polyimide (PAAS) aerogels with a thickness of 3 mm were then manufactured by unidirectional freeze-drying. Then, aerogel-based papers with a thickness of 40 μm and microstructure multilayer interconnected properties were obtained by a hot extrusion strategy and a thermal imidization process. This polyimide structural paper exhibited excellent thermal and mechanical properties. Through the design of micro and macro structures, the tensile strength of the aerogel-based paper was much higher than that of commercial paper at both room temperature and 400 ℃. This aerogel-based paper also exhibited high-temperature cycle stability, high flexibility, and good stretchable bending properties. The successful preparation of this aerogel-based paper demonstrates the feasibility of the hot extrusion strategy. This work provides a new papermaking technology method and broadens the application field of paper.

By using high purity aluminum powders and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as raw materials, MWCNTs/Al composites were fabricated with ball milling, followed by cold pressing, vacuum sintering, and hot extrusion. It was found that when the sintering temperature was 863 K, MWCNTs/Al composite sintered for 4 h showed good comprehensive properties, and its tensile strength and elongation reached to 156 MPa and 21%, respectively. The comprehensive mechanical properties of the composites became better with raising sintering temperature when the sintering time was 4 h. When the sintering temperature raised to 923 K, the tensile strength of the composite reached to 167 MPa which is three times more than that of annealed high purity aluminum, mainly due to the higher density and better interface bonding resulted from higher sintering temperature. CNTs' pulling out were observed obviously in the fractured surfaces, and load transfer may be the main strengthening mechanism.

Flower spherical ZnO loaded with Ag nanoparticles was synthesized by hydrothermal method. Ag/ZnO electrical contact materials were prepared by powder metallurgy combined with hot extrusion technique. During the hydrothermal reaction, Ag nanoparticles entered the interlayer gaps of flower spherical ZnO and uniformly deposited on its surface. The tensile mechanical test results indicate that the Ag/ZnO electrical contact materials prepared by ZnO, Ag@ZnO (75 wt%) and Ag@ZnO (50 wt%) exhibited elongations of 6.8 %, 13.8 % and 12.1 %, respectively. This result indicates that appropriate loading of Ag nanoparticles on flower spherical ZnO could significantly improve the mechanical properties of Ag/ZnO electrical contact materials. The contact resistance of electrical contact materials significantly affects their temperature rise characteristics. During 20, 000 cycles process, Ag/ZnO electrical contact material prepared by Ag@ZnO (50 wt%) exhibited the lowest temperature rise of 6.33 K under the conditions of DC 36 V/10 A. Considering both mechanical and electrical contact performance, Ag/ZnO electrical contact materials prepared by Ag@ZnO (50 wt%) exhibited the optimum overall performance.

With the advantage of micro-size and nano-size B 4 C particles, micro-/nano-bimodal size B 4 C particles have been widely used to fabricate excellent composites with high strength and ductility. In this study, micro-/nano-bimodal size B 4 C particles reinforced aluminum matrix composites with three different volume fractions (3%, 5% and 7%) were fabricated by spark plasma sintering (SPS) followed by hot extrusion and rolling (HER). The microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of as-SPSed, as-extruded and as-rolled composites were investigated. Results show that the microscopic electrical discharge between the particles in SPS promotes the densification of composites. The maximum relative density of as-SPSed composites increases from 99.21% to 99.65% after HER. Nano-size B 4 C particles distribute mainly at the gap of 6061Al particles in as-SPSed composites, while the microstructure presents more homogeneous after HER. Pin effect of nano-size B 4 C particles stimulates dynamic recrystallization (DRX) and grain refining. Texture orientation of the 6061Al grain exists in the as-extruded and as-rolled B 4 C/6061Al NCs. No new phases are detected in composites in all deformation stages. The tensile strength of as-SPSed composites increases when compared with 6061Al matrix, and the tensile strength of as-rolled composites after hot extrusion is enhanced to 305 MPa. Fracture mechanisms of as-extruded and as-rolled composites mainly include 6061Al matrix tear, particle/matrix interfacial tear and micro-size B 4 C particle fracture.

Nacre-inspired (TiBw-TiB 2p )/2024Al aluminum-matrix composites (AMCs) were fabricated using the pressure infiltration of molten Al into a porous TiBw-TiB 2p preform obtained by ice templating. Hot extrusion (475–520 °C) was utilized to control the nacre-inspired architecture and tailor the tensile properties of the nacre-inspired AMC. The continuous ceramic-rich layers transitioned to quasi-continuous ones after hot extrusion. As the extrusion temperature increased, the thickness of the ceramic-rich and Al layers decreased from 27.2 and 25.4 μm in the cast composite to 12.8 and 11.6 μm, respectively, in the composite extruded at 520 °C. The Al composite extruded at 520 °C exhibited an optimal balance between strength and ductility, with tensile strength and elongation reaching 470.5 MPa and 1.9 %, respectively, which was 21 % and 660 % higher than that of the cast composite. The improved strength and ductility of the high-volume Al composites (over 20 vol%) were attributed to the quasi-continuous architecture, which improved the plastic deformation ability of the ceramic-rich layers. For the composite extruded at 520 °C, the quasi-continuous architecture resulted in a back stress of up to 235 MPa higher than that of composites extruded at lower temperatures, accounting for 54 % of the flow stress. Additionally, the quasi-continuous architecture coordinated plastic deformation, mitigating the premature appearance of stress concentrations. This study provides a useful approach to enhancing the mechanical properties of nacre-inspired composites produced via ice templating, thereby broadening the range of applications for this technique.

Nanodiamond (ND) has been recently considered to be an excellent reinforcement for strengthening metal matrix composites . However, most of the previous studies focused on manufacturing process, final structure, and mechanical properties . Systematic exploration of the microstructural evolution , which is critical to understand the effect mechanism of ND particles, still lacks. Herein, we seek to understand the effect of ND particles on microstructural evolution via comparative investigation of microstructures in different test points on extrusion remnant specimens of pure aluminum , 0.5 wt% and 1.0 wt% ND-reinforced aluminum composites prepared by powder metallurgy and hot extrusion. Finite element simulations were used to analyze the relative stress–strain states and deformation modes in different test points. Electron backscatter diffraction and transmission electron microscopy studies reveal that the mean grain size of ND-reinforced aluminum composite declined rapidly after entering the extrusion deformation zone. Microstructures in simple shear, tensile pure shear, and compressive pure shear deformation modes were quite different. The dispersed ND particles effectively promoted grain refinement and improved dislocation driving force with the increase in plastic strain. The large localized high-content ND clusters were broken into small ones, and small ones acted as non-deformable particles to stimulate nucleation and recrystallization under high dislocation driving force. Test results show that the hardness of 0.5 wt% and 1.0 wt% ND-reinforced aluminum composites was 1.9 and 2.1 times that of pure aluminum, respectively. The 0.5 wt% ND-reinforced aluminum composites exhibited optimal comprehensive mechanical properties with a tensile strength of 205 MPa and elongation of 18%, which were 115% and 91% of pure aluminum, respectively.

Magnesium (Mg) alloys are widely used in bone fixation and bone repair as biodegradable bone-implant materials. However, their clinical application is limited due to their fast corrosion rate and poor mechanical stability. Here, the development of Mg–2Zn–0.5Ca–0.5Sr (MZCS) and Mg–2Zn–0.5Ca–0.5Zr (MZCZ) alloys with improved mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, cytocompatibility, osteogenesis performance, and antibacterial capability is reported. The hot-extruded (HE) MZCZ sample exhibits the highest ultimate tensile strength of 255.8 ± 2.4 MPa and the highest yield strength of 208.4 ± 2.8 MPa and an elongation of 15.7 ± 0.5%. The HE MZCS sample shows the highest corrosion resistance, with the lowest corrosion current density of 0.2 ± 0.1 µA cm −2 and the lowest corrosion rate of 4 ± 2 µm per year obtained from electrochemical testing, and a degradation rate of 368 µm per year and hydrogen evolution rate of 0.83 ± 0.03 mL cm −2 per day obtained from immersion testing. The MZCZ sample shows the highest cell viability in relation to MC3T3-E1 cells among all alloy extracts, indicating good cytocompatibility except at 25% concentration. Furthermore, the MZCZ alloy shows good antibacterial capability against Staphylococcus aureus .
