Since the global water shortage, fog collection based on functional materials and surfaces has become one of the most potential ways to relieve the crisis. However, further improving the water collection efficiency through elaborate designs of material structures still encounters a bottleneck. Here, we present a temperature gradient-induced strategy for enhancing water collection from fog. Such a temperature modulation generates increases in the fog collection efficiency and surface-refreshing frequency by 25% and 217%, respectively. Scattering measurements show that the movement velocity of fog particles near cooling surfaces is increased by approximately 150%. Based on the theory of heat transfer and thermophoresis, the temperature field acting on fog particles is analyzed, deducing that the enhanced fog-collection performance results from thermophoretic forces generated by temperature gradients. This work offers a new approach for designing next-generation fog-collection devices and manipulating particle motions.

The acquisition of global freshwater resources has always been the direction of people's efforts. At present, metal materials based on special wettability and special structure have become an effective way to collect fog. However, it is still a bottleneck to further improve the water collection efficiency by carefully designing the wettability and special structure of materials. Therefore, we propose to use temperature gradient to enhance fog collection in metal surface. The mechanism of temperature gradient enhancement improves fog collection efficiency by 54 % and surface refresh rate by about 541 %. Further scattering measurements show that the capture time of fog particles at low cooling surface is shortened by about 40 %. Based on the theory of heat transfer and thermophoresis , the temperature gradient around the metal and the behavior of fog particles are analyzed, and it is concluded that the enhancement of fog collection performance on the metal surface can be caused by the temperature gradient caused by thermophoresis force. This work provides ideas for designing better fog collection equipment and materials.

Inspired by the collective behavior of natural living systems, the collective behavior of micromotors has become the research highlight. Although great progress has been made, it is still challenging to control the collective behavior of micromotors. In this paper, we demonstrate a novel near-infrared (NIR) light-powered micromotor consisting of a polystyrene microsphere and a polydopamine core–shell structure (PS@PDA) with concentration-dependent motion direction reversal and dynamic swarming behavior. Among others, a single micromotor exhibits negative phototaxis, whereas a group of micromotors shows positive phototaxis, which can be attributed to the competition between the thermophoretic force and hydrodynamic drag caused by the thermal buoyancy. In addition, because of the reversible hydrogen bonding and π–π stacking interactions between the adjacent PS@PDA micromotors, they form aggregation as a result of the positive phototaxis with dynamically controllable shapes tuned by the irradiation position, which makes them potentially attractive for in-solution calligraphy and painting. It is anticipated that the current study may not only provide a new strategy to control the collective behavior of the micromotors, but also promote their application in the practical field.

Boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) offer remarkable potential for thermal management and optoelectronic applications due to their high aspect ratio, excellent thermal conductivity, electrical insulation, and mechanical strength. However, achieving high-quality, well-aligned BNNTs (ABNNTs) remains a critical challenge, largely due to limited understanding of their growth mechanism. Here, we develop a three-dimensional flow–force–thermal coupling model that reveals how gas convection and vertical temperature gradients synergistically drive the aligned growth of ABNNTs. We elucidate the essential roles of thermophoretic and shear forces in guiding nanotube orientation. Based on this insight, a synthesis strategy integrating computational fluid dynamics and thermo-solid coupling analysis is proposed and experimentally validated. The resulting ABNNTs exhibit high crystallinity, low defect density, and near-ideal BN stoichiometry. When applied as thermal interface materials (TIMs) in LED devices, ABNNTs reduce the core temperature by approximately 17.9 °C and enhance thermal dissipation efficiency by ∼20.7 %, outperforming disordered BNNTs and commercial TIMs. This work not only clarifies the fundamental mechanism underlying ABNNT alignment, but also establishes a rational design strategy for advanced thermally conductive materials and their integration into high-performance electronic systems.

Cancer photothermal (PTT) and photodynamic therapies (PDT) have aroused tremendous attention with high spatial specificity, but they experience the challenges from the inefficient tumor accumulation and penetration of photosensitizers and dose-dependent side effects. Herein, persistent luminescence (PL)-activated nanomotors are developed with the integration of PL-illuminated PTT and PDT to overcome these limitations. PL nanodots of ZnGa 2 O 4 :Cr 3+ (ZGC) were deposited on mesoporous silica nanoparticles (NPs), followed by conjugation of silicon phthalocyanine as a photosensitizer and capping with polydopamine (PDA) to fabricate Janus [email protected] NPs. ZGC nanodots on NPs are activated by external illumination to generate PL as an internal light source to excite PDA and phthalocyanine for persistent productions of heat and reactive oxygen species (ROS), avoiding high heat stress and ROS levels in the conventional intermittent phototherapy. In addition, the persistent heat gradients around the Janus NPs create thermophoretic force to drive their motions and enhance their cellular uptake, and the PL-illuminated PDT continuously produces intracellular ROS to damage tumor cells. Light activation of [email protected] obviously promotes accumulation and deep penetration of NPs into tumors and produces mild thermal and ROS levels with well distribution across the tumors. The self-propelled tumor distribution and the combined PDT/PTT treatment led to full inhibition of tumor growth and significant extension of animal survival, and there is no systemic toxicity and function fluctuation of the major organs. Thus, this study demonstrates a concise strategy to generate PL-activated motion for deep penetration and produce PL-illuminated PDT/PTT for synergistic tumor treatment.

Cancer phototherapy experiences limitations in tissue diffusion and cell internalization of phototherapeutic agents and dose-dependent side effects. Herein, Janus pyroelectric nanoparticles (NPs) are designed to generate self-powered motion and built-in electric fields to overcome the delivery barriers. Polydopamine (PDA) layers are partially coated on tetragonal BaTiO 3 (tBT) NPs to prepare Janus tBT@PDA, and Au NPs are deposited on the PDA caps to obtain Janus tBT@PDA-Au NPs. Near-infrared (NIR) illumination of tBT@PDA-Au builds in situ pyroelectric potentials on NPs, which selectively affect the membrane potential of tumor cells rather than normal cells to enhance tumor cell internalization and produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) for pyroelectric dynamic therapy (PEDT). The asymmetric photothermal effect of the Janus NPs creates thermophoretic force to propel NP motion, which enhances tumor diffusion and cellular uptake of NPs and boosts cytotoxicity and intracellular ROS levels. The inoculation of Au NPs increases the photothermal effect, exhibits larger motion velocities, produces higher pyroelectric potentials, and elevates cellular uptake rates, resulting in significant induction of tumor cell apoptosis, suppression of tumor growth, and extension of animal survival. Thus, the concise design of tBT@PDA-Au/NIR treatment has achieved thermophoretic motion-promoted tissue diffusion, built-in electric field-enhanced cell internalization, and photothermal/PEDT-synergized antitumor efficacy.

Antibacterial electrotherapy is currently activated by external electric field or self-powered generators, but usually needs complicated power management circuits. Herein, near-infrared illumination (NIR) of pyroelectric nanoparticles (NPs) produces a built-in electric field to address the effectiveness and safety concerns in the antibacterial treatment. Janus tBT@PDA NPs were obtained by capping polydopamine (PDA) on tetragonal BaTiO 3 (tBT) NPs through defining the polymerization time, followed by ciprofloxacin (CIP) loading on the PDA caps to fabricate Janus tBT@PDA-Cip NPs. NIR illumination of PDA caps creates temperature variations on tBT NPs to generate photothermal and pyroelectric effects. Finite element simulation reveals a pyroelectric potential of over 1 V and sufficient reactive oxygen species (ROS) are produced to exhibit pyroelectric dynamic therapy (PEDT). The elevated temperature on one side of the Janus NPs produces thermophoretic force to drive NP motion, which enhances interactions with bacteria and overcomes limitations in the short action distance and lifespan of ROS. The pyroelectric field accelerates CIP release through weakening the π-π stacking and electrostatic interaction with PDA and also interrupts membrane potentials of bacteria to enhance CIP invasion into bacteria. The synergistic antibacterial effect of pyroelectric tBT@PDA-Cip NPs causes the fully recovery of S. aureus -infected skin wounds and regeneration of intact epidermis, blood vessels and hair follicles, while no obvious pathological change or inflammatory lesion is detected in the major organs. Thus, the pyroelectric Janus nanomotors demonstrate synergistic PEDT/photothermal/antibiotic effects to enhance antibacterial efficacy while avoiding the necessity of excessive heat, ROS and antibiotic doses. Statement of significance Antibacterial treatment is challenged by antibiotics-derived side effects and the evolution of resistant strains. Phototherapy is commonly associated with excessive heat and oxidative stress , and their combinations with other agents are especially encouraged to strengthen antibacterial efficacy while alleviating the associated side effects. Electric field is another activator to generate antibacterial abilities, but usually requires complicated power management and bulk electrodes, making it inconvenient in a biological setup. To address these challenges, we propose a strategy to generate microelectric field on nanoparticles themselves and achieve synergistic electrodynamic-photothermal-antibiotic therapies. The pyroelectric effect weakens interactions between nanoparticles and antibiotics to accelerate drug release, and the built-in pyroelectric field increases membrane fluidity to enhance bacterial uptake of antibiotics.
