A high-thermopower ionic hydrogel for intelligent fire protection

Changcheng Jiang,Xuejun Lai,Zhengzhong Wu,Hongqiang Li,Xingrong Zeng,Yinan Zhao,Qingtao Zeng,Jiefeng Gao,Yurong Zhu

High fire-safety and sensitive temperature-response materials are urgently needed for the development of intelligent fire protection. Herein, a multifunctional flame-retardant ionic hydrogel (HTIG) with high thermopower was fabricated via free-radical polymerization. The HTIG exhibited high thermopower, sensitive fire warning and strain sensing, excellent flame retardancy and self-adhesive performance. The thermopower of the HTIG was as high as 3.04 mV K−1, which was tens of times higher than those of traditional electronic thermoelectric materials, and it showed a good linear relationship between the voltage and temperature difference. When being burned, the HTIG triggered the fire alarm in about 4 s and generated a voltage of more than 100 mV. More importantly, the HTIG showed high fire safety. It was quickly self-extinguished when removed from the fire. It increased the limiting oxygen index (LOI) of wood from 27% to more than 80%. Besides, the HTIG displayed good strain sensing performance, which could be used for motion monitoring. Our work provided new insights for the preparation of the next generation of intelligent multifunctional fireproof materials.

Reversibly tuning thermopower enabled by phase-change electrolytes for low-grade heat harvesting

Yinghong Xu,Zhiwei Li,Simin Li,Shengliang Zhang,Xiaogang Zhang

Thermodiffusion-based thermoelectrochemical cells have become one of the promising candidates for self-power supply by efficiently harvesting low-grade heat. However, fulfilling continuous energy output is still challenging because of the non-reciprocating motion of cations and anions during diffusion by adopting a steady heat source. Herein, we propose a moderate-concentration phase-change electrolyte for tuning the thermodiffusion process and the thermopower. Interestingly, the dominant ion can be alternated between cations and anions only by operando regulation of the physical state of the as-designed electrolyte, enabling the reversible polarization of devices from the p-type to the n-type with a tunable thermopower from 3.2 to −2.1 mV K−1. Moreover, the correlation of phase transition behaviors, solvation structures, and thermoelectrochemical performances is investigated. As a proof-of-concept, a prototype module consisting of n-type and p-type units connected in series displays high sensitivity and stability for long-term power generation under light irradiation, demonstrating the potential of phase-change electrolytes in energy-related applications.

Giant and bidirectionally tunable thermopower in nonaqueous ionogels enabled by selective ion doping

Sijing Liu,Yuewang Yang,He Huang,Jiongzhi Zheng,Gongze Liu,Tsz Ho To,Baoling Huang

Ionic thermoelectrics show great potential in thermal sensing owing to their ultrahigh thermopower, low cost, and ease in production. However, the lack of effective n-type ionic thermoelectric materials seriously hinders their applications. Here, we report giant and bidirectionally tunable thermopowers within an ultrawide range from −15 to +17 mV K −1 in solid ionic liquid–based ionogels. Particularly, a record high negative thermopower of −15 mV K −1 is achieved in the ternary ionogel, rendering it among the best n-type ionic thermoelectric materials under the same condition. A thermopower regulation strategy through ion doping to selectively induce ion aggregates to enhance ion-ion interactions is proposed. These selective ion interactions are found to be decisive in modulating the sign and magnitude of the thermopower in the ionogels. A prototype wearable device integrated with 12 p-n pairs is demonstrated with a total thermopower of 0.358 V K −1 , showing promise for ultrasensitive thermal detection.

Self-Powered Machine-Learning-Assisted Material Identification Enabled by a Thermogalvanic Dual-Network Hydrogel with a High Thermopower

Yunsheng Li,Wenxu Wang,Xiaojing Cui,Ning Li,Xueliang Ma,Zhaosu Wang,Yuyou Nie,Zhiquan Huang,Hulin Zhang

Wearable devices equipped with high-performance flexible sensors that can identify diverse physical information free from batteries are playing an indispensable role in various fields. However, previous studies on flexible sensors have primarily focused on their elasticity and temperature-sensing capability, with few reports on material identification. In this paper, a thermogalvanic dual-network hydrogel is fabricated with [Fe(CN) 6 ] 3-/4− as a redox couple and lithium magnesium silicate, Gdm + and lithium bromide as key electrolytes to optimize the interconnected porous structure of the gel, which shows excellent mechanical and thermoelectric properties with a thermopower as high as 4.01 mV K −1 . A self-powered material identification ring is developed based on the temperature-triggered thermoelectric response of the gel in conjunction with machine learning, which can actively infer materials without an external power connection by analyzing the voltage signals correlated with interfacial heat transfer produced upon contact with different materials. The proposed gel ring has important applications for future areas such as human–computer interaction and haptic-associated artificial intelligence.

A hydrogel thermoelectrochemical cell with high self-healability and enhanced thermopower both induced by zwitterions

Youfa Liu,Li Yin,Sheng Chen,Yao Liu,Qingjiang Liu,Liangliang Yang,Yingchun Li,Qian Zhang,Yan Huang

Thermocells with high thermopower have received much attention in recent years owing to their capability of converting heat to electricity. In particular, endowing these thermocells with promising self-healability and stretchability after self-healing are of fundamental importance to self-powered wearable electronics. However, there is still a lack of such effective thermocells due to the contradictory characteristics of good self-healing properties and good thermopower enhancement. Herein, by employing a zwitterionic polymer (poly[2-(methacryloyloxy)-ethyl]dimethyl-(3-sulfo-propyl) ammonium hydroxide) P(SBMA), we have successfully fabricated a hydrogel thermocell with high self-healability (90%), stretchability after self-healing (325%) and enhanced thermopower (3.5 mV K−1). In detail, we have not only proposed and verified that the zwitterion-boosted thermopower is due to the selective interactions between the cation in SBMA and Fe(CN)64−, but we have also realized self-healing and stretchability after self-healing in a hydrogel thermocell. In addition, the thermocell is still self-healable at a low temperature of −10 °C upon the addition of LiCl. The applicability of the hydrogel thermocell as a self-powered wearable energy converter is demonstrated by stably lighting an LED lamp and by the thermovoltage output under extreme conditions, including self-healing and stretching after self-healing. This work provides an effective strategy to develop promising thermocells for self-powered wearable electronics.

High-Thermopower Thermogalvanic Ionic Hydrogel for Efficient Low-Grade Heat Energy Harvesting in Electronic Devices

Runqiu Wu,Bendong Liu,Dongkun Yu,Hongye Qin,Jiahui Yang,Haibin Liu,Guohua Gao

Energy is fundamental to human survival and development and also serves as a crucial driving force for sustainable economic growth. Due to the limited efficiency of energy conversion, electronic devices operating at high loads generate substantial amounts of low-grade waste heat. Recycling and reusing of this waste heat can lead to significant energy savings. The present thermoelectric materials typically exhibit low thermopower (or Seebeck coefficient), making it challenging to efficiently recover low-grade waste heat. This study rapidly fabricated polyacrylamide hydrogels via aqueous polymerization and then introduced the Fe(CN)63–/4– redox couple and guanidine hydrochloride through solvent exchange to produce the thermogalvanic ionic hydrogel (TGIH). Subsequently, the water retention and mechanical properties of TGIH were enhanced by introducing the natural moisturizing factor sodium pyrrolidone carboxylate. The TGIH exhibited a high Seebeck coefficient of 5.49 mV/K, a high specific power density of 1213.29 μW/m2·K2, a high water retention rate of 62.7%, a great tensile fracture rate of 523.65%, and a toughness of 0.167 MJ/m3. In addition, an application case is carried on using smartphones; this work demonstrated the TGIH’s capability to efficiently dissipate heat from electronic devices while simultaneously recovering low-grade waste heat. The TGIH can promote the recovery and utilization of low-grade thermal energy and holds significant application potential in sustainable wearable electronics.
