MXene-based thermoelectric fabric integrated with temperature and strain sensing for health monitoring

Jun Peng,Fangqing Ge,Weiyi Han,Tao Wu,Jinglei Tang,Yuning Li,Chaoxia Wang

Wearable thermoelectric devices hold significant promise in the realm of self-powered wearable electronics, offering applications in energy harvesting, movement tracking, and health monitoring. Nevertheless, developing thermoelectric devices with exceptional flexibility, enduring thermoelectric stability, multifunctional sensing, and comfortable wear remains a challenge. In this work, a stretchable MXene-based thermoelectric fabric is designed to accurately discern temperature and strain stimuli. This is achieved by constructing an adhesive polydopamine (PDA) layer on the nylon fabric surface, which facilitates the subsequent MXene attachment through hydrogen bonding. This fusion results in MXene-based thermoelectric fabric that excels in both temperature sensing and strain sensing. The resultant MXene-based thermoelectric fabric exhibits outstanding temperature detection capability and cyclic stability, while also delivering excellent sensitivity, rapid responsiveness (60 ms), and remarkable durability in strain sensing (3200 cycles). Moreover, when affixed to a mask, this MXene-based thermoelectric fabric utilizes the temperature difference between the body and the environment to harness body heat, converting it into electrical energy and accurately discerning the body's respiratory rate. In addition, the MXene-based thermoelectric fabric can monitor the state of the body's joint through its own deformation. Furthermore, it possesses the capability to convert solar energy into heat. These findings indicate that MXene-based thermoelectric fabric holds great promise for applications in power generation, motion tracking, and health monitoring.

Wearable thermoelectric 3D spacer fabric containing a photothermal ZrC layer with improved power generation efficiency

Mufang Li,Jiaxin Chen,Mengying Luo,Weibing Zhong,Wen Wang,Xing Qing,Ying Lu,Liyan Yang,Qiongzhen Liu,Yuedan Wang,Dong Wang

Harvesting energy directly from the body heat has been suggested as an effective way to realize sustainably and uninterruptedly wearable power supply. However, the low temperature gradient (ΔT) between the human body and the environment has limited the power generation efficiency. In this study, the photothermal-thermoelectric 3D spacer fabric (ZrC-PPSF) was prepared by coating a thin zirconium carbide/polyurethane (ZrC/PU) photo-thermal layer on the poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly (styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS)/spacer fabric (SF) thermoelectric composite (PPSF). By utilizing the excellent photo-thermal conversion of ZrC and the thermal insulation performance of PPSF, a larger ΔT was generated and maintained, so as to enhance the power generated and efficiency. The effects of ZrC concentration, SF thickness and optical power density on the photo-thermal efficiency and voltage generated were studied. When the ZrC concentraiton is 1.5 wt%, the ΔT increases form 67.5 °C to 179.3 °C under the optical power density of 500 mW/cm 2 . Regardless of sunny and cloudy day, a larger ΔT can be generated. Based on this, a flexible and wearable wristband containing 30 ZrC-PPSF units was prepared. Encouragingly, the voltage generated by the wristband under the sunshine is almost 11 times the voltage generated indoors. Under the optical density of 100 mW/cm 2 for 800 min, the highest voltage generated by the wristband is 9.11 mV, much higher than the 3.12 mV generated without light. All the results demonstrate that it is a very effective and simple method to improve the thermoelectric power generation efficiency by photo-thermal conversion. The wearable TE device prepared in this study is especially suitable for outdoor application, and provide continuous and stable energy for the wearable electronics.

Layer-by-layer self-assembly of durable, breathable and enhanced performance thermoelectric fabrics for collaborative monitoring of human signal

Xinyang He,Chengzu Li,Suiyuan Zhu,Jiaxin Cai,Gui Yang,Yunna Hao,Yunhe Shi,Rongwu Wang,Liming Wang,Xinxin Li,Xiaohong Qin

Thermoelectric devices have received widespread attention in next-generation flexible electronics due to their excellent self-powered characteristics, multifunctionality and high integrability. However, current thermoelectric devices suffer from drawbacks such as poor durability, complex preparation processes, and terrible air permeability which is the necessary metric in wearing comfort. Here, we propose a layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembly strategy to prepare multifunctional thermoelectric fabrics with enhanced thermoelectric performance and durability. Based on the self-assembly effect, the interfacial bonding between the thermoelectric material and the fabric substrate is effectively improved, so that the thermoelectric properties of the fabrics can still be maintained stable after 2000 bending cycles and 600 washing cycles. Moreover, this strategy increases the electrical conductivity of the fabric by a factor of 4 without affecting the fabric’s air permeability (up to 400 mm s −1 at 50 Pa) and tensile properties (strains exceeding 100 %). Due to its wearability and multifunctionality, the fabric was designed as a synergistic monitoring system that includes facial respiration monitoring and knee joint motion monitoring for continuous monitoring of the athlete’s dynamic body condition. This thermoelectric fabric shows amazing potential for advanced smart textiles, soft robotics and human–computer interaction.

Long Yu,Xinyu Liu,Boxuan Zhang,Huijie Hu,Kunlin Chen,Haoxuan Li,David J. S. Birch,Yu Chen,Hua Qiu,Peng Gu

With the fast development of new science and technology, wearable devices are in great demand in modern human daily life. However, the energy problem is a long-lasting issue to achieve real smart, wearable, and portable devices. Flexible thermoelectric generators (TEGs) based on thermoelectric conversion systems can convert body waste heat into electricity with excellent flexibility and wearability, which shows a new direction to solving this issue. Here in this work, polyethylenimine (PEI) and gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) twin surface-modified carbon nanotube fibers (CNTFs) were designed and prepared to fabricate thermoelectric textiles (TET) with high performance, good air stability, and high-efficiency power generation. To better utilize the heat emitted by the human body, microencapsulated phase change materials (MPCM) were coated on the hot end of the TET to achieve the phase-transition-promoted TET. MPCM-coated TET device could generate 25.7% more energy than the untreated control device, which indicates the great potential of the phase-transition-promoted TET.

Multifunctional, Wearable, and Wireless Sensing System via Thermoelectric Fabrics

Xinyang He,Jiaxin Cai,Mingyuan Liu,Xuepeng Ni,Wendi Liu,Hanyu Guo,Jianyong Yu,Liming Wang,Xiaohong Qin

Flexible thermoelectric materials play an important role in smart wearables, such as wearable power generation, self-powered sensing, and personal thermal management. However, with the rapid development of Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI), higher standards for comfort, multifunctionality, and sustainable operation of wearable electronics have been proposed, and it remains challenging to meet all the requirements of currently reported thermoelectric devices. Herein, we present a multifunctional, wearable, and wireless sensing system based on a thermoelectric knitted fabric with over 600 mm·s −1 air permeability and a stretchability of 120%. The device coupled with a wireless transmission system realizes self-powered monitoring of human respiration through an mobile phone application (APP). Furthermore, an integrated thermoelectric system was designed to combine photothermal conversion and passive radiative cooling, enabling the characteristics of being powered by solar-driven in-plane temperature differences and monitoring outdoor sunlight intensity through the APP. Additionally, we decoupled the complex signals of resistance and thermal voltage during deformation under solar irradiation based on the anisotropy of the knitted fabrics to enable the device to monitor and optimize the outdoor physical activity of the athlete via the APP. This novel thermoelectric fabric-based wearable and wireless sensing platform has promising applications in next-generation smart textiles.

Dual-catalytic polymerization of high-performance PEDOT thermoelectric fabrics for self-powered sensing

Yifan Cui,Qin Chen,Wuwei Bao,Hao Yao,Zhenzhe Huang,Rui Ma,Miao Miao,Lizhi Sheng,Xinyang He

Flexible thermoelectric fabrics hold great promise for applications in smart wearable devices, particularly in areas such as self-powered sensing, energy harvesting, and human-machine interaction. However, with the rapid advancement of flexible electronics, higher standards are being set for the durability, integration, and multifunctionality of wearable electronics. Currently reported thermoelectric materials still struggle to meet these demanding requirements. In this study, a dual-catalytic polymerization strategy is proposed to fabricate PEDOT-based thermoelectric fabrics by synergizing enzymatic and chemical polymerization. Enzymatic polymerization contributes to forming dense conductive layers, while chemical polymerization enables rapid construction of a structural framework, resulting in PEDOT@Nylon fabrics with excellent electrical conductivity (90.91 S/m), good durability (stable performance after 3 h washing and 600 bending cycles), and stretchability. The thermoelectric fabric can serve as a self-powered temperature sensor for contact/non-contact hot-cold recognition and ambient temperature monitoring over a broad temperature range (ΔT ~ 40 K). Additionally, it functions as a strain sensor, capable of real-time and rapid monitoring of human motion signals by integrating a wireless transmission system (with a response time of ~0.16 s). This efficient (4 h) dual-catalytic polymerization strategy produces high-performance thermoelectric fabrics, promising for wearable devices, smart healthcare, human-computer interaction, and next-generation multifunctional fabrics.

Novel Thermoelectric Fabric Structure with Switched Thermal Gradient Direction toward Wearable In-Plane Thermoelectric Generators

Ding Ding,Qian Wu,Qian Li,Yixun Chen,Chao Zhi,Xia Wei,Jinmei Wang

Wearable thermoelectric generators (TEGs) have exhibited great potential to convert the temperature gradient between the human body and the environment into electrical energy for maintenance-free wearable applications. A 2D planar device structure is widely employed for fabricating flexible TEGs due to its simple structure and facile fabrication properties. However, this device configuration is more appropriate for utilizing in-plane temperature differences than the out-of-plane direction, which limits their application in wearable cases since the temperature difference between the human body and the environment is in the out-of-plane direction. To solve this problem, a novel fabric-based TEG structure that can utilize the out-of-plane temperature gradient is proposed in this work. By introducing thermally conductive components in the generator, the out-of-plane temperature difference can be switched to the in-plane direction, which can be further utilized for 2D planar devices in wearable applications. The prepared thermoelectric fabric prototype with only 12 p-type TE legs exhibits a maximum open-circuit voltage of 4.69 mV and an output power of 39.7 nW at a temperature difference of 30 K. This strategy exhibits a high degree of versatility and can be readily applied to other 2D planar TEGs, thus expanding their potential application in wearable technology.

Highly Sensitive Thermoelectric Fabric of PEDOT:PSS/SWCNT@PU Composite Fibers for Body-Temperature Monitoring and Fever Alarming

Pan Luo,Shuyuan Dong,Lirong Liang,Fengxia Kuang,Chunyu Du,Zhenqiang Ye,Guangming Chen

Integrated flexible thermoelectric (TE) fabric demonstrates great potential for wearable energy harvesting and intelligent temperature sensing. However, existing TE fibers often struggle to simultaneously satisfy requirements for high and stable TE performance, favorable weavability, sweat resistance, and good biocompatibility. Herein, continuous PEDOT:PSS/SWCNT composite fibers with these desirable features are obtained via a convenient freeze-thaw-induced gelation process assisted wet-spinning process, exhibiting a high electrical conductivity of 1960 S cm −1 , a large power factor of 59.6 µW m −1 K −2 , and a high tensile strength of 103 MPa. Polyurethane-encapsulated composite fibers further provide superior mechanical flexibility, desirable weavability, remarkable washability, low-temperature tolerance, and stable TE performance over 1000 bending/twisting cycles. A resulting TE fabric comprising 32 p-type legs achieves a power density of 60.1 µW cm −2 at temperature difference of 50 K, surpassing most reported PEDOT:PSS-based fiber devices, and retains over 95% performance after various mechanical deformations. The developed fabric-integrated intelligent fever monitoring system (forehead/wrist/armpit) exhibits high sensitivity (alarm response < 5 s) and good repeatability (3–4.3 s response over 50 cycles) for low/high fever monitoring. Such composite TE fibers are anticipated to advance practical applications of wearable TE fabrics in body energy harvesting, personalized healthcare, and intelligent fitness monitoring.
