Conventional adhesives used in wood-based panels typically contain volatile organic compounds, including formaldehyde, which can potentially lower indoor air quality and damage human health. Lignin, a natural adhesive present in wood, offers significant advantages over other materials due to its ready availability, renewable nature, rich aromatic rings, and aliphatic and aromatic hydroxyl groups, as well as quinone groups. However, when modified as an adhesive for wood-based panels, lignin suffers from poor water resistance and formaldehyde release. Dehydrogenation polymer (DHP), as a lignin model compound, possesses a structure similar to lignin and excellent water resistance, making it a potential substitute for lignin as a formaldehyde-free adhesive. A DHP-xylose complex was obtained from a condensation reaction between DHP and xylose in hemicellulose in a simulated hot-pressing environment. The feasibility of DHP bonding with hemicellulose components was verified using FT-IR and NMR spectroscopic methods. In addition, the structure of the adduct and condensation process were also studied. DHP and xylose underwent condensation under simulated hot-pressing conditions. Xylose and DHP may be linked by C-C bonds. The thermal condensation of DHP with xylose was investigated. This may contribute to a better understanding of the adhesive bonding process for xylose during hot-pressing and offer support for practical applications.

The preparation of traditional wood-based panels mostly uses adhesives such as urea-formaldehyde resin and phenolic resin, which not only consumes petrochemical resources but also releases formaldehyde, posing potential health risks to the human body. Lignin, a natural adhesive in plant cells, is characterized by high reactivity, and it is expected to aid in the development of a new generation of green formaldehyde-free adhesives. However, current studies of lignin adhesives have revealed that while strides have been made in reducing formaldehyde emissions, its residual presence remains a concern, an issue which is compounded by inadequate water resistance. Dehydrogenated Polymer (DHP) has a lignin-like structure and good water resistance, offering a new option for the development of formaldehyde-free adhesives. In this paper, DHP and glucuronic acid were reacted with each other in a simulated hot-pressing environment to obtain DHP-glucuronic acid complex, and then the structure of the complex was characterized by infrared nuclear magnetic resonance to verify whether DHP can be efficiently connected with hemicellulose components under hot-pressing conditions. The results showed that the thermal condensation reaction of DHP and glucuronic acid can generate ester bonds at the Cα position in a simulated hot-pressing environment. This paper explores the thermal condensation mechanism of DHP and glucuronic acid, which is helpful for understanding the bonding process between adhesives and components of wood-based panels in the hot-pressing process, and provides key theoretical support for the design of more sustainable lignin adhesives.

The thermal-condensation method is widely used for the synthesis of K-doped g-C3N4 photocatalysts, but the presence of organic byproducts in the resultant products is often overlooked in previous reports. Here, we demonstrated the universal presence of organic byproducts in K-doped g-C3N4 synthesized by typical thermal condensation of KOH/melamine, KOH/dicyandiamide, or KOH/urea. Taking the K-doped g-C3N4 photocatalysis for the degradation of dimethyl phthalate as an example, the negative influence of the organic byproducts on K-doped g-C3N4 photocatalysis was confirmed. Specifically, the organic byproducts can be gradually dissolved into the photocatalytic system of K-doped g-C3N4 as new and stable pollutants. Based on the solubility investigations on the byproducts in several solvents, hot-water washing was demonstrated to be a relatively effective approach to remove the organic byproducts from K-doped g-C3N4. The formation of organic byproducts during the synthesis of K-doped g-C3N4 could be ascribed to the fact that the presence of K salts in melamine, dicyandiamide, or urea molecules results in their insufficient thermal condensation into expected g-C3N4. The present work provides objective information about the K-doped g-C3N4 photocatalysts and reminds researchers about the influence of the organic byproducts on the applications of the other impurity-doped g-C3N4 photocatalysts.

Developing low-cost, efficient, and bifunctional electrocatalysts for both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is an attractive yet challenging task. Herein, we report a novel, simple and one-pot method to fabricate ultrafinely dispersed Co-CoO x nanoparticles encapsulated in a nitrogen doped carbon nanotubes (denoted as Co-CoO x /CN) via an efficient thermal condensation of d -glucosamine hydrochloride, melamine and Co(NO 3 ) 2 ·H 2 O. A well-designed Co-CoO x based hybrid that possesses high activity and excellent durability for the OER and HER in alkaline solution has been fabricated. The catalyst displays good stability for 30,000 s and small Tafel slope of 82 mV per decade for OER and 110 mV per decade for HER. Detailed electrochemical and physical studies indicate that the high OER and HER activity of the hybrid catalyst arises from the strong interaction between Co-based NPs and N-doped carbon nanotubes, and especially the synergistic effect of Co and cobalt oxide.

Inspired by the intrinsic relationship between sophisticated interfacial architecture and the outstanding mechanical performance of natural nacre, a flexible, large-area and robust bioinspired reduced graphene oxide–silicon–carboxymethyl cellulose–polyacrylic acid (rGO–Si–CMC–PAA) nanocomposite film with a hierarchically laminated structure was prepared via a vacuum-assisted filtration self-assembly process and a thermal condensation reaction. The as-prepared rGO–Si–CMC–PAA films exhibited a typical orderly layered structure with a thickness of about 40 μm, and Si nanoparticles were uniformly distributed and embedded throughout the continuous graphene network. As binder-free, integrated anodes for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), the free-standing rGO–Si–CMC–PAA films exhibited appealing electrochemical lithium storage properties with a high reversible capacity (2153.49 mA h g−1), long-term cycling stability with 63% capacity retention even after 800 cycles at 420 mA g−1, and a superior rate capability. Therefore, the bioinspired strategy of synergistic interfacial interactions of hydrogen and covalent bonding also provides a promising avenue for constructing integrated high-performance graphene-based nanocomposite films in the future.
