Herein, a series of Mn-activated ZnGa2O4 (ZGO) phosphors have been developed for multifunctional applications. The characteristic green and red emission at 503 and 668 nm of Mn-activated ZGO phosphors can be observed under excitation of 247 and 375 nm, respectively, attributed to the partial oxidation of Mn2+ ions resulting in the coexistence of Mn2+ and Mn4+ ions in the host lattice. The valence modulation of Mn content not only realizes the adjustment of red and green luminescence intensity but also achieves the management of persistent luminescence time and thermo-luminescence time. Further, the codoping of Mg2+ could transform the position occupancy preference of Mn and effectively facilitate the conversion of Mn2+ to Mn4+, leading to the regulation of the valence state of manganese ions. Surprisingly, the existence of Mg2+ ions broadens the emission band of Mn4+ and enhances the photoluminescence intensity to 3.8 times, which can be ascribed to the weakened crystal field leading to the downward shift of the 4T2 energy level and the increase of Mn4+ concentration. For this valence modulation behavior, two different hypotheses about the occupancy of Mg2+ have been proposed to explain the corresponding phenomenon. Finally, the potential applications of the synthesized phosphors have been explored in advanced anticounterfeiting strategies, information storage, and plant lighting field.

AIEgens have attracted intensive interest because of the unusual fluorescence feature. Although AIEgen-based materials have been developed for responding to the diverse ex-stimuli, such as mechano-, electro-, and thermal-stimuli, the practical application of AIEgen-based thermoluminescence is hampered for the following reasons: (1) high cost attributed to the complicated chemical modification, (2) low contrast and responsiveness resulting from the chromophoric property of the thermal functional group. In this contribution, a facile encapsulation technology-based strategy without any chemical modifications is developed to form the encapsulated TPE nanogels for the preparation of the AIEgen-based thermoluminescence. Thanks to the coexistence of the liquid and solid phases, the nanogel-based AIEgens can not only attain the transparent feature but also a reversible transformation between the single-molecule and aggregated state by ex-thermal stimuli. In the nanogel, the two aggregated states of TPE molecules are observed that result from being tangled by poly-TPGDA and from being self-assembled, respectively. Furthermore, the nanogels prepared at different temperatures demonstrate the controllable fluorescence intensity. The higher preparation temperature results in more aggregated TPE and higher fluorescence intensity. Finally, the nanogels are easily formed into the transparent film thermometers because of their flowability, which shows a switchable and stable fluorescence by ex-thermal stimuli. The transparent film thermometer demonstrates high potential in anticounterfeiting technology and biological imaging.

The light waveguiding effect of transparent glass ceramics (GCs) on mechanoluminescence (ML) signals is highly attractive for remote stress sensing and structural health monitoring applications. However, a prerequisite for generating ML in GCs is pre-irradiation with high-energy rays, which not only increases application costs but also poses a risk of GCs devitrification. Herein, we propose a safe, non-destructive, and convenient charging method for the ML of KMgF 3 : Tb 3+ GCs, namely ultraviolet (UV) light charging. By effectively filling the intrinsic defects in KMgF 3 : Tb 3+ nanocrystal using UV light, we achieved trap-controlled ML in rigid GCs. Moreover, this ML is attributed to thermoluminescence (TL) induced by frictional heating during mechanical stimulation. Additionally, when the GCs powder is combined with flexible polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), a self-powered (without any pre-charging) ML induced by interfacial triboelectricity can also be achieved, which is similar to the results observed in most flexible ML systems. This work proposes a more straightforward and safer approach for applications such as mechanical sensing based on the ML of transparent GCs.

All-inorganic metal halide perovskite semiconductors have great potentials in lighting applications, but the effect of excitonic magnetic polarons (EMPs) in the transition metal (TM) ion-doped halide perovskites on their luminescence processes has not been extensively understood. Here, we have synthesized Mn2+-doped Rb3Cd2Cl7 perovskite powders with different doping amounts by a hydrothermal method. After Mn(II) is doped, Rb3Cd2Cl7 gives strong emission, though the Rb3Cd2Cl7 powder itself does not emit light. This emission originates from the intrinsic self-trapped exciton (STE) formation enhanced by the ferromagnetic Mn–Mn pair with spin–spin coupling, that is, the magnetic polaron whose astonishing luminescence at 587 nm has a quantum yield up to 147%. Some shallow trapped centers below the conduction band out of high d levels by localized EMPs after photoexcitation are proven to add to this luminescence process. The thermoluminescence phenomenon with rising temperature proves that these shallow trapped carriers are present with phonon and multiphonon notation, and their efficient transfer to the conduction band and the STE state occurs via the electron–phonon coupling during photoexcitation. This compound provides a new way for TM-doped perovskite material design and applications for magneto-optical and display technology.
