Flexible and Robust Biomaterial Microstructured Colored Textiles for Personal Thermoregulation

Jiawei Wu,Run Hu,Shaoning Zeng,Wang Xi,Shiyao Huang,Junhui Deng,Guangming Tao

Integrating personal thermoregulation technologies into wearable textiles has enabled extensive and profound technological breakthroughs in energy savings, thermal comfort, wearable electronics, intelligent fabrics, and so forth. Nevertheless, previous studies have suffered from long-standing issues such as limited working temperature, poor comfort, and weak reliability of the textiles. Here, we demonstrate a skin-friendly personal insulation textile and a thermoregulation textile that can perform both passive heating and cooling using the same piece of textile with zero energy input. The insulation textile material is composed of biomaterial microstructured fibers that exhibit good thermal insulation, low thermal emissivity, and good dyeability. By filling these microstructure fibers with biocompatible phase-change materials and coating them with polydimethylsiloxane, the insulation textile becomes a thermoregulation textile that shows good water hydrophobicity, high mechanical robustness, and high working stability. The proposed thermoregulation textile exhibits slow heating/cooling rates with improved thermal comfort, offering feasible and adaptive options for personal cooling/heating scenarios and enabling scalable manufacturing for practical applications.

Design of a Dual-Action Aerogel Film with Enhanced Radiative Cooling and Moisture Permeability through Pore Size Modulation for Human Heat and Humidity Comfort

Yinan Fan,Jianhua Zhu,Junmei Li,Xiaoyuan Liu,Ping Liu,Xing Jin,Keyi Wang,Lifang Liu

Human thermal management technologies based on radiant cooling can achieve portable, lightweight, long-lasting, and zero-energy cooling. However, in a high-temperature environment, perspiration continues to accumulate and increased humidity reduces the efficiency of radiant cooling, thus affecting human thermal and humidity comfort. Therefore, we developed a radiation-cooled aerogel film with easily tunable pore sizes consisting of cellulose acetate, polyvinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP), and aluminum oxide (Al2O3), which has excellent optical properties, moisture permeability, and thermal stability. The appropriate pore size distribution and porosity not only enhance the solar reflectivity of the film but also improve its surface wettability. High solar reflectance (R̅solar = 97.4%) and infrared emissivity (ε̅IR = 98.5%) enabled the film to produce subambient cooling of 8.1 °C at an irradiance of 794.1 W/m2. Furthermore, even under conditions of high humidity (relative humidity = 90%), the film is expected to achieve a maximum daytime cooling power of 57 W/m2. The aerogel film exhibited superior moisture permeability (WVT = 7224 g/m2·24 h) compared to commercial cotton fabric. This work has significant applications in the management of human heat and humidity in extreme heat environments.

Composite Warp-Knitted Textile with Wet–Thermal Comfort, Support, and Antimicrobial Activity for Personal Long-Term Healthcare

Fan Feng,Xiaoqin Zhang,Zheng Xue,Zunyuan Wang,Guoxin Wang,Jiwei Li,Weichao Chen

Moisture management materials, which can remove liquid unidirectionally, have excellent potential for long-term healthcare of bedridden patients because they can handle large amounts of body fluids caused by incontinence, sweating, etc. However, their lack of support, thermal management, and antibacterial properties limits their clinical application. Here, a three-dimensional thermoplastic polyurethane/warp-knitted spacer fabric/viscose fabric (TWVF) was designed and prepared by coating and needle-punching. TWVF had asymmetrical wettability and interpenetrating fiber pin arrays, which could quickly and unidirectionally drain body fluid away from the skin to keep the skin dry and clean. Meanwhile, the low thermal conductivity of TWVF prevented excessive cooling caused by heat loss of liquid transfer (body temperature was 4.7 °C higher than that with cotton textiles). TWVF exhibited excellent permeability, a low compression modulus (0.03 MPa), and a high compression strength (0.15 MPa), providing sufficient air exchange and suitable support for the body and reducing the risk of pressure injury. Moreover, the incorporated aloin endowed TWVF with excellent antibacterial rates against Staphylococcus aureus (99.61%) and Escherichia coli (98.16%), respectively. This multifunctional textile is simple to prepare and easy to industrialize, providing a reference for the development of functional healthcare materials.

Radiative cooling face mask based on mixed micro- and nanofibrous fabric

Yuanqiang Xu,Xiaomin Zhang,Ying Li,Yu Zhang,Tienan Zhao,Yongchun Zeng

A type of personal protective face mask with thermal comfort function is developed based on the radiative cooling concept. We show that the cooling face mask, with the combination of PLA meltblown microfibers and a thin sheet of mixed electrospun micro- and nanofibers as filtration media and a silk fabric as inner supporting layer, can provide high reflectivity (>85 %) in the solar spectrum and high emissivity (>96 %) in the atmospheric window. Outdoor measurement of simulated skin temperature demonstrates the skin covered by our cooling mask could be ∼ 2.7℃ lower than that covered by commercial 3 M N95 mask. Our cooling mask exhibits excellent filtration performance with 99.98 % filtration efficiency and < 110 Pa pressure drop because of the reduced stacking density of the filtration media. This research has the potential of developing thermal management textiles.

Achieving heat storage coatings from ethylene vinyl acetate copolymers and phase change nano-capsules with excellent flame-retardant and thermal comfort performances

Haoxin Chen,Yanqi Ma,Xinxin Sheng,Ying Chen

The heat-storage coatings from ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymers were developed by incorporating in-situ synthesized phase change nano-capsules (NEPCMs). The coatings were applied to the interior walls of the building, aimed at enhancing thermal storage and flame-retardant performances. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) are utilized to evaluate the chemical composition of the NEPCMs. At the same time, the thermal properties and microstructure of NEPCMs and the coatings are analyzed using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The enthalpy of NEPCMs is 158.14 J/g, while that of heat-storage coatings is 56.45 J/g. NEPCMs and heat-storage coatings exhibit excellent thermal storage performance even after 200 heating-cooling cycles, demonstrating the excellent thermal stability of NEPCMs and heat-storage coatings. Furthermore, excellent flame-retardant properties are also provided by the heat-storage coating. In dynamic heat transfer experiments, under the same conditions, the heat-storage coatings were capable of maintaining the chamber in the thermal comfort zone (24–28 °C) for 141 min, while the conventional coatings lasted only 34 min. The results show that incorporating heat-storage coatings can effectively enhance the thermal regulation performance of interior walls and improve the thermal comfort of indoor environments. Therefore, heat-storage coatings hold a high potential for application in energy-saving buildings.

Study on the Comfort of Acrylic/Wool Blended Knitted Fabrics Treated with the Reduced Graphene Oxide Method

Sun Simin,Pei Liujun,Hu Qiushuang,Saleem Muhammad Asad,Wang Jiping

Graphene not only provides functional finishing for fabrics, but also influences the original physical and mechanical properties of the fabrics, reducing their wearing properties. This study conducted graphene conductive finishing on acrylic/wool blended knitted fabrics using an oxidation–reduction method. The research focused on analyzing the reduction of graphene, fabric conductivity, thermal comfort, and hand feel of the fabric, while studying the effects of reduction temperature and time on electrical conductivity, thermal comfort, moisture absorption, breathability, and hand feel during the graphene process. The results revealed that a higher degree of graphene reduction led to lower surface resistance and enhanced electrical conductivity in the acrylic/wool blended knitted fabrics. The stability of the fabric structure and mechanical characteristics were also influenced by temperature and time, impacting comfort attributes. The reduction temperature and duration directly influenced the reduction degree of graphene, with the maximum reduction degree and lowest surface resistance observed at 75 °C and 90 min. Importantly, there was no significant degradation in the thermal comfort and tactility of the acrylic/wool blended knitted fabrics.

All-fibrous sandwich-structured humidity actuators enabling multimodal adaptive thermal comfort management

Lijun Yang,Xin-Long Qian,Zhi-Ting Bian,Hui Qiu,Wangkai Jiang,An-Quan Xie,Xiao-Qiao Wang

The human body's thermoregulation is intrinsically linked to thermal-moisture transfer. Wearable textile-based humidity actuators that adapt to human body microenvironments represent a promising approach for dynamic personal thermal management, an area that remains underexplored. Here, we present an all-fibrous sandwich-structured humidity actuator with multimodal thermal management capabilities. This actuator consists of uniaxially aligned hydrophilic polyvinyl al co hol nanofibers, hydrophobic poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) nanofibers, and silver nanowire (AgNW) layers. The asymmetric hygroscopicity and aligned nanofibers enable regular and large bending deformation that reversibly responds to humidity changes. Significantly, a warming mode maintaining 31.2 °C is operated when the actuator remains in a closed flat state under dry, cold conditions, with the low-emissivity AgNWs and all-fibrous architecture effectively suppressing heat dissipation; while skin perspiration-triggered opening under hot conditions activates a cooling mode maintaining 28.7 °C, permitting direct thermal convection, radiation, and moisture evaporation. Additionally, the electrically conductive AgNWs introduce an active heating mode for extremely cold conditions, enabling the actuator to readily achieve 37 °C at just 0.3 V. Wearable experiments demonstrate the actuator's practical applicability and effective comfort management. This all-fibrous, multi-dynamic humidity actuator provides a viable pathway toward energy-efficient smart textiles for personal thermal management across various environments.

Preparation and characterization of multilayered superfine fibrous mat with the function of directional water transport

Jinhao Xu,Binjie Xin,Zhuoming Chen,Yan Liu,Yuansheng Zheng,Fuli Zhang

Directional water transport in garment materials plays a pivotal role in maintaining human thermal and wet comfort. In the present work, a new type of multilayer fibrous mat with the specific function of directional water transport was prepared via the combination of melt-electrospinning and solution-electrospinning. The polypropylene (PP) fibrous layer prepared by melt-electrospinning technology was located in the inner layer (next to the skin), while the polyacrylonitrile-containing hydrophilic nano-silica particles (PAN-SiO2) layer with remarkable hydrophilicity was located in the outer layer, which could effectively transport water to the outer surface of the composites. Treatment of the as-prepared PAN-SiO2/PP with an alkaline aqueous solution of dopamine not only increased the wettability of the PP layer, but also further improved the hydrophilicity of PAN-SiO2. A layer of cotton woven mesh was added between the TPP layer and TPAN-SiO2 to form a sandwich structure in order to accelerate water transport in the bilayered fibrous mats. The directional water transport, mechanical flexibility, and permeability of the prepared multilayered superfine fibrous mat were characterized systematically. The experimental results exhibited that TPAN-SiO2/cotton mesh/TPP exhibited an excellent accumulative one-way transport index (AOTI, 1071%), remarkable overall moisture management capacity (OMMC, 0.88), and reasonably high water vapor transport rate (WVT, 11.6 kg d−1 m−2), indicating it is a promising candidate for the development of novel textile materials for use in the field of sportswear for fast sweat release applications.

Core-Sheath Nanofibrous Membranes Based on a Phase Change Energy Storage/Radiative Cooling Synergistic Strategy for Personal Thermal Management

Tonganbang Zhang,Mengya Liu,Rui Zhang,Fucheng Guan,Jing Guo,Yuan Gao,Minghan Li,Zheng Li,Xinbin Ji,Yihang Zhang

Personal thermal management (PTM) significantly enhances human thermal comfort by alleviating overheating-induced stress. However, achieving energy-free cooling, intelligent temperature regulation, lightweight construction, and wearable designs remains challenging. This study introduces a coaxial electrospinning nanofiber membrane with a core-sheath structure using polyvinyl alcohol as the matrix, phase change microcapsules (PCMC) for energy storage, and nano-silica (SiO 2 -NPs) for radiative cooling. The resultant membrane effectively provides cooling without external energy input. The PVA/SiO 2 -30 shell exhibits high solar reflectance (80%) and mid-to-long infrared emissivity (95%), while the PCMC-loaded core prevents leakage during phase transitions, achieving a melting enthalpy of 79.7 J·g − . Under simulated solar radiation, the membrane maintains an equilibrium temperature ≈14.2 °C lower than conventional cotton fabric, demonstrating superior thermal stability. Moreover, the membrane exhibits excellent mechanical performance, with tensile strength of 2.71 MPa, elongation at break of 128%, and lightweight properties (3.125 gm −2 ). The one-step coaxial electrospinning process simplifies fabrication, enhancing interlayer adhesion and enabling efficient multifunctional textile production. This approach offers significant potential for developing intelligent, lightweight, and energy-efficient wearable cooling textiles.

Thermal comfort and energy saving of novel heat-storage coatings with microencapsulated PCM and their application

Xiaoyun Zhu,Xinxin Sheng,Jun Li,Ying Chen

Novel heat-storage composite coatings containing microencapsulated phase change material (MPCM) are prepared to enhance the thermal energy storage of the inner walls of an indoor environment. MPCMs with n-octadecane as core and polyurea as shell are synthesized via interface polymerization. They, along with the coatings, are characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR), SEM, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The SEM results show that MPCM can maintain its original morphology and be dispersed uniformly in the coatings with 30 wt% MPCM loads. Moreover, the latent heat capacity of MPCM and the heat-storage coatings are 151.89 J/g and 45.5 J/g, respectively. Other properties, such as thermal stability, temperature time lag, and film-forming are also tested, and the test results indicate excellent performances. After 200 heating-cooling cycles, MPCM and the heat-storage coatings still exhibit good thermal stability. Two reduced-scale test chambers enveloped by wall boards painted with and without MPCM coatings are tested under the same conditions and compared. Overall, the chamber with MPCM coatings can keep a stable temperature of 26-28 °C for approximately 77 min when the heating load is 80 W/m 2 . However, the chamber without PCM coating can only maintain such temperature for 13 min. Thus, the heat-storage coatings can improve the thermal comfort of indoor environments and have a high potential application in building thermal energy storage, especially for old buildings retrofit.

Performance optimization of multi-stage thermochromic windows: Experimental and numerical analysis of daylight and thermal regulation in Tianjin

Xuemei Zhang,Jianjuan Yuan,Xuan Zhao,Yue Han,Xiangfei Kong

Windows, key building components, serve as the main channels for natural light and heat to enter interiors. Hydrogel-based thermochromic smart windows regulate light/heat entry via transmittance control. However, traditional single-stage thermosensitive smart windows (SWⅠ) abruptly opacify at the transformation temperature (LCST) of hydrogel, which triggers sudden indoor dimming and visual discomfort. Therefore, a novel multi-stage structure is proposed to provide occupants time to adapt to dimness and cut indoor lighting load. Experimental results showed that the indoor light and heat environment can be optimized by adjusting the LCST matching position in the multi-stage structure. Specifically, relative to SWⅠ with an LCST corresponding to the middle hydrogel of the three-stage structure (SWⅢ), the average indoor temperature ( T avg ) of SWⅢ increased by 0.26 °C and the available indoor natural light ( day-UDI 100–2000 lux ) increased by 28.17 %. In contrast, compared to SWⅠ with an LCST corresponding to the upper hydrogel of the SWⅢ, the T avg of SWⅢ decreased by 1.04 °C and the day-UDI 100–2000 lux decreased by 10.16 %. Furthermore, annual simulation results indicated that the optimal LCST for SWⅠ in Tianjin was 28 °C. The optimal SWⅢ had an LCST in its middle that was consistent with SWⅠ-28, which prolonged the indoor thermal comfort time by 1 h and reduced the unfavorable illumination by 60.44 % at 12:00 noon on a typical summer day than SWⅠ-28. This study provides valuable insights and a practical reference for the application of thermosensitive smart windows.
