Effect of Pyrolytic Carbon Interface Thickness on Conductivity and Tribological Properties of Copper Foam/Carbon Composite

Wang Pei,Deng Guanyu,Zhu Hongtao,Yin Jian,Xiong Xiang,Zhang Hongbo

To improve electrical conductivity of the carbon-based pantograph strip, a sliding contact material of pyrolytic carbon (PyC) coated-copper foam/carbon composite was fabricated by chemical vapor deposition technology, followed by densifying processes of furan resin impregnation and carbonization. Morphology, electrical conductivity, wear and friction behavior of the composites are investigated to clarify the effect of PyC thickness (from 0 μm to 280 μm) on tribological behaviors and current transfer characteristic. The results show that there is a good interface combination between copper foam and resin carbon matrix in the composites after the improvement of interface wettability by inserting PyC layer. The composite has great advantages in electrical conductivity and density due to the copper foam and PyC layer with three-dimensional structure. With increasing the PyC thickness, both electrical conductivity and wear resistance of the composite have steadily increasing tendency, but friction coefficient has no obvious change. In addition, an analytical model is developed to explore current transfer mechanisms of the PyC-copper foam/carbon composite, and the theoretical predictions are in agreement with the experimental observations, in term of electrical conductivity and porosity of composite preform.

The effects of phenolic resin-derived PyC interlayers on microstructure and mechanical properties of Cf/SiC composites

Jie Wang,Xueliang Pei,Jianhai Zhi,Jing Huang,Gaoming Mo,Yanfei Wang,Xiali Zhen,Liu He,Qing Huang

A novel, easy and cost-effective way, infiltration and pyrolysis of phenolic resin solution, was exploited to prepare pyrolytic carbon (PyC) interlayers for carbon fiber/silicon carbide (Cf/SiC) mini-composites. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, dynamic contact angle measurement and scanning electron microscope were carried out to characterize chemical structure of carbon fibers (CFs), wetting properties between CFs and phenolic resin solution and microstructure of CFs and their composites, respectively. Remarkably, SEM results showed regulation of uniformity and thicknesses of PyC interlayer could be achieved through controlling the concentration of phenolic resin solution and oxidation condition of CFs. When CFs were treated by 10 min' oxidation with 40 mg/L ozone followed by dip-coating with 4 wt% phenolic solution, uniform PyC interlayer with approximately 120 nm were prepared on CFs. The corresponding Cf/SiC specimens had the largest increase in tensile strength and work of fracture with the improvement of 26.2% and 71.6% from the PyC-free case.

Improving the Oxidation Resistance of Phenolic Resin Pyrolytic Carbons by In Situ Catalytic Formation of Carbon Nanofibers via Copper Nitrate

Zhi Wu,Pengcheng Jiang,Hongxing Pang,Guanghai Cheng,Jiajun Li,Hao Liu,Yan Ma,Yunjie Dong,Zhoufu Wang

Phenolic resin pyrolytic carbons were obtained by catalytic pyrolysis of phenolic resin at 500 °C, 600 °C, 700 °C, and 800 °C for 3 h in an argon atmosphere using copper nitrate as a catalyst precursor. The effects of copper salts on the pyrolysis process of phenolic resin as well as the structural evolution and oxidation resistance of phenolic resin pyrolytic carbons were studied. The results showed that copper oxide (CuO) generated from the thermal decomposition of copper nitrate was reduced to copper (Cu) by the gas generated from the thermal decomposition of the phenolic resin. Carbon nanofibers with tapered structures were synthesized by Cu catalysis of pyrolysis gas at 500–800 °C. The catalytic pyrolysis of phenolic resin with Cu increased the graphitization degree and reduced the pore volume of the phenolic resin pyrolytic carbons. The combined action improved the oxidation resistance of phenolic resin pyrolytic carbons.

In-situ reaction for recycling indium from waste liquid crystal display panels by vaccum reduction with pyrolytic carbon as reductant

Ruixue Wang,Yiqing Hou,Zhenming Xu

In the past, the pretreatment and indium extracting were conducted in independent disposal system to recycle indium from waste liquid crystal display (LCD), which make the recycling process inefficient and costly. In this study, an efficient and environmental friendly indium recycling process was proposed by an in-situ reaction process. The carbon residue generated in the pretreatment stage (organic removing stage) was used as the reductant to extract indium in the same reaction system. Comparison results indicated that the reaction effects of pyrolytic carbon were much better than coke since the structure of pyrolytic carbon is porous which would make the reactants contact better, and promote the reaction efficiency. Futhermore, results showed that the pyrolytic carbon was sufficient for the indium reduction without adding extra reductant, and indium conversion rate can reach 99.08% under the condition of 935 °C, 5 Pa, 2.5 wt%, 30 min, <0.3 mm. In this study, the organic pollutants were removed, while the indium also could be recycled in a closed-loop system. To sum up, this study could simplify the process route of waste LCD recycling, and provide fundamental basis as well as practical experience for recycling waste LCD environmentally and efficiently.

Enhanced microbial degradation mediated by pyrogenic carbon toward p-nitrophenol: Role of carbon structures and iron minerals

Gang Chu,Wangmin Wang,Yang Dou,Kai Sun,Wenxiu Qin,Zhen Wang,Youbin Si

Pyrogenic carbon (PC) including black carbons and engineered carbons can mediate the extracellular electron transfer to facilitate the biogeochemical reaction with organic pollutants. Yet, the role of carbon structures and iron minerals on PC-mediated microbial degradation is still lacking of understanding. Herein, we studied the electrochemical properties of PCs produced from varied feedstock with regards to the mediated degradation of p -nitrophenol (PNP) by Shewanella putrefaciens CN32 in anoxic system. Mediated degradation by PCs was enhanced by facilitating extracellular electron transfer through oxygenated group and graphitic structure. Graphitic crystallites improved the electron-accepting capacity (as suggested by I D /I G and EAC) and diminished the electrochemical impedance (as suggested by Rct), contributing to PNP degradation under the anoxic system. Furthermore, more interfacial adsorption was conducive to the mediated reduction by the graphitic structure on PCs of high-temperature. In the presence of iron minerals, both hematite and goethite significantly facilitated PC-mediated degradation, which could be ascribed to the enhancement of the electron-donating capacity of microorganism and the accumulation of the reductive-state PCs by the interaction with generated Fe(II). This work paves a feasible way to the technical design on the remediation of phenolic contaminants by PC-mediated microbial degradation in environment.

Microstructural feature and tribological behaviors of pyrolytic carbon-coated copper foam/carbon composite

Wang Pei,Deng Guanyu,Zhang Hongbo,Yin Jian,Xiong Xiang,Zhang Xiang,Zhu Hongtao

A novel sliding contact material of pyrolytic carbon (PyC)-coated copper foam/carbon composite was fabricated by a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technology, followed by several densifying processes of furan resin impregnation and carbonization. Microstructure, electrical and thermal conductivities and current-carrying tribological performance were investigated. The results show PyC crystallites are evenly arranged on the copper foam surface after the CVD process. Because interface wettability between the copper foam and resin carbon matrix is improved by the PyC layer, the composite has a dense structure and a good interface bonding. The composite has obviously more advantages than the carbon-based pantograph strips in the density, electrical and thermal conductivities, due to the copper foam with three-dimensional structure. Friction and wear behaviors were investigated using a current-carrying friction tester. As the electrical current increases, wear rate and wear surface temperature continually increase, and friction coefficient changes from wildly fluctuating to stable. The high electrical current causes high temperature of wear surface and severe wear of oxidization and arc erosion. Copper oxide particles can improve wear surface roughness and change the sliding friction to the rolling friction between the friction couples. In addition, two physical models are schematically illustrated to understand wear mechanism during the current-carrying friction tests.

Effect of pyrolytic carbon interface thickness on microstructure and mechanical properties of lightweight zirconium boride modified carbon-bonded carbon fiber composites

Xianghong Xu,Baosheng Xu,Changqing Hong,David Hui

To improve the mechanical properties of carbon-bonded carbon fiber (CBCF) composites, they are firstly fabricated by chemical vapor deposited (CVD) pyrolytic carbon (PyC) coating layer on the carbon fiber surface, and then modified by zirconium boride (ZrB 2 ) using three cycles of precursor infiltration and pyrolysis (PIP) process. The effects of different PyC interface thickness on the microstructure and mechanical properties of ZrB 2 modified PyC coated CBCF (PyC–CBCF/ZrB 2 ) composites were studied and characterized. As the PyC thickness increased from 0.5 to 3.6 μm, the flexural properties of PyC–CBCF/ZrB 2 composites are noticeably enhanced in x / y and z direction, respectively. Mechanical enhancements for PyC–CBCF/ZrB 2 composites are mainly attributed to the effective interface bonding between carbon fiber and PyC, crack deflection and branching within the laminar PyC layer and carbon fiber pullout from PyC interface coating.

Synthesis and characterization of tri-n-octyl phosphine oxide impregnated pyrolytic carbon for efficient extraction of uranium (VI) in strongly acidic solution

Daqian Liu,Zuohai Liu,Min Huang,Taoyuan Xiu,Hamza Shehzad,Yun Wang,Zhirong Liu

The development of adsorbents capable of separating uranium from uranium-containing wastewater involves critical research. In this study, a novel functional carbon material was successfully synthesized by impregnating tri-n-octyl phosphine oxide into the pyrolytic carbon (TOPO@PyC). This material exhibited fast adsorption rate (less than an hour), high adsorption capacity ( q m = 48.1 mg/g) and strong selectivity (98.8 %) for U(VI) under low to moderate acidic conditions. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isothermal model effectively described the adsorption kinetics and equilibrium data, respectively. The SEM-EDS, FT-IR, XPS and DFT calculations revealed that U(VI) was successfully adsorbed by TOPO@PyC through complexation with P = O group in TOPO. Furthermore, the adsorption efficiency and desorption efficiency of TOPO@PyC remained above 95 % after five cycles, indicating that TOPO@PyC possessed excellent reusability. Consequently, with inertness of pyrolytic carbon and strong selectivity of TOPO, the TOPO@PyC material holds significant potential for the treatment of uranium-containing acidic wastewater.

Nitrogen-doped pyrogenic carbonaceous matter facilitates azo dye decolorization by sulfide: The important role of graphitic nitrogen

Han-Qing Zhao,Wen-Qiang Li,Nannan Hou,Lei Li,Yiran Wang,Peili Lu,Yang Mu

Pyrogenic carbonaceous matter (PCM) catalyzes azo dye decolorization by sulfide, but the nitrogen doping catalytic mechanisms are poorly understood. In this study, we found that stagnate time of azo dye methyl orange (MO) decolorization was reduced to 0.54-18.28 min in the presence of various nitrogen-doped graphenes (NGs), remarkably lower compared to graphene itself. Particularly, graphitic nitrogen played a critical role in NGs-catalyzed MO decolorization by sulfide. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and in-situ surface Raman analysis demonstrated that doping nitrogen, especially graphite one facilitated reactive intermediate polysulfides formation. This is attributed to the improved electron conductivity through graphitic nitrogen doping, and the enhanced interactions between sulfide and carbon atoms bonded to graphitic nitrogen. This study not only provides a better understanding of PCM impact on transformations and fates of organic pollutants in natural environments, but also offer a new regulation strategy for more efficient wastewater treatment processes in PCM-catalyzed engineering systems.

Reactive oxygen species formation in thiols solution mediated by pyrogenic carbon under aerobic conditions

Changyin Zhu,Guodong Fang,Fengxiao Zhu,Dixiang Wang,Chenyan Xue,Ning Chen,Juan Gao,Dongmei Zhou

Previous studies have demonstrated that pyrogenic carbon can mediate the reductive degradation of pollutants in solutions containing reducing reagents under anaerobic conditions . However, few studies have investigated oxidative species formation and pollutants transformation directly mediated by pyrogenic carbon under aerobic conditions . In this study, we found that activated carbon (AC) can not only mediate reductive hexachloroethane degradation in the absence of O 2 but also mediate the oxidation of As(III) and sulfanilamide in L-Cysteine (Cys, a naturally abundant thiol compound) solution under aerobic conditions. Electron paramagnetic resonance and quenching studies indicated that O 2 •− , H 2 O 2 and • OH was formed in Cys/AC system under aerobic conditions. High O 2 content favored the formation of • OH, indicating that O 2 participated in • OH production. In addition, an increase in AC concentration and specific surface area led to increased formation of • OH, and other pyrogenic carbon materials such as biochar and graphite were also found capable of mediating the formation of • OH. This study demonstrates that pyrogenic carbon could mediate • OH formation in solutions containing reductive reagents under aerobic conditions, which provides a new perspective for studying the behavior of pyrogenic carbon in the environment and its role in biogeochemical processes.

Using PyC coated short chopped carbon fiber to tackle the dilemma between toughness and strength of ZrC-SiC

Yuan Cheng,Chang Liu,Ping Hu,Boqian Sun,Peitao Hu,Chen Ma,Cheng Fang,Dongyang Zhang,Jiaxin Feng,Shanyi Du

Graceful toughness and high strength are mutually exclusive in engineering ZrC-SiC ceramic, which are hard to be possessed simultaneously. Here, the pyrolytic carbon (PyC) coated short chopped carbon fibers were utilized to toughen ZrC-SiC ceramic, tackling the dilemma between toughness and strength. Through the uniform incorporation of PyC coated short chopped carbon fibers, the penetration crack mode of ZrC-SiC was changed into an obviously deflecting propagation path with closed phenomenon. The PyC coating brought about a relatively weak interface bonding and guided the crack propagate along the weak interface, consequently resulting in a more flexuous crack propagation instead of passing through the fibers directly. Meanwhile, the fibers received effective protection of coating inhibiting from performance degradation. The PyC coated C f /ZrC-SiC obtained a fracture toughness highly reaching 7.57 ± 0.33 MPa m 1/2 with a rivaling flexural strength at 268 ± 16 MPa. Moreover, the graceful load-displacement curve is illustrated with a smoothly extended displacement of 0.12 mm and increased load to 83 N, which forms an obvious yield plateau. To some degree, this work provided an effective solution to tackling the dilemma between toughness and strength of engineering ZrC-SiC ceramic.

The critical role of electron donating rate of pyrogenic carbon in mediating the degradation of phenols in the aquatic environment

Liang Zeng,Sizhe Yang,Quan Chen,Wang Fu,Min Wu,Patryk Oleszczuk,Bo Pan,Baoshan Xing

Phenols are the widely detected contaminants in the aquatic environment. Pyrogenic carbon (PyC) can mediate phenols degradation, but the specific properties of PyC or phenols influencing this reaction remain unknown. The present study investigated the kinetic process and mechanism of removal of various phenols by different PyC in aqueous phase system. To avoid the impact of the accumulated degradation byproducts on the overall reaction, we conducted a short-term experiment, quantified adsorption and degradation, and obtained reaction rate constants using a two-compartment first-order kinetics model. The adsorption rate constants ( k a ) of phenols by PyC were 10-220 times higher than degradation rate constants ( k d ), and they were positively correlated. Interestingly, no correlation was found between k d and common PyC properties, including functional groups, electron transfer capacities, and surface properties. Phenols were primarily attacked by •OH in the adsorbed phase. But neither the instantly trapped •OH, nor the accumulated •OH could explain phenol degradation. Chemical redox titration revealed that the electron transfer parameters, such as the electron donating rate constant ( k ED ) of PyC, correlated well with k d (r>0.87, P < 0.05) of phenols. Analysis of 13 phenols showed that E gap and E LUMO negatively correlated with their k d , confirming the importance of the electronic properties of phenols to their degradation kinetics. This study highlights the importance of PyC electron transfer kinetics parameters for phenols degradation and manipulation of PyC electron transfer rate may accelerate organic pollutant removal, which contributes to a deeper understanding of the environmental behavior and application of PyC systems.
