With the development of wearable intelligent devices, flexible textiles integrate high-performance sensing, electromagnetic shielding and Joule heating show broad application prospects. However, it is still difficult to improve all the performance simultaneously through simple methods. Here, we have prepared MXene/PU composite fiber film with multilayer porous network structure by using the electrospinning spraying alternate operation process. This film has ultra-high sensitivity (GF= 77,751), super large detection range (400%) and ultra-low detection limit (0.05%). Secondly, the multilayer fiber film has excellent EMI shielding performance (EMI SE=38 dB), and the EMI shielding capacity of the multilayer film can still exceed the commercial standard when it is stretched to 20%. Finally, the multilayer fiber film shows better Joule heating performance, including lower voltage drive (2 V) and faster thermal response (12 s). The excellent performance of the composite come from the synergistic effect of MXene and the unique multi-layer porous network structure. Among them, MXene provides excellent conductivity, electrothermal and electromagnetic shielding performance. The layered porous network structure can store the strain in advance and form a parallel circuit, which improves the sensing range, increases the transmission path of electromagnetic waves , and realizes the homogeneity of Joule heating. In addition, the outer PU slows down the invasion of oxygen, thus slows down the oxidation of MXene, and ensures the performance of materials in a long time. The multilayer fiber film has been proved to be suitable for sensing at low temperature, and has broad application prospects in wearability.

Lightweight and flexible multifunctional materials with excellent electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding and Joule heating performances are highly demanded for smart and wearable electronics. In this work, polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofiber films are prepared by electrospinning and then coated with polypyrrole (PPy) via vapor deposition, yielding a continuous three-dimensional (3D) conductive network of PAN@PPy. Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets with high electrical conductivity are sprayed on the PAN@PPy film to enhance its EMI shielding performance. The as-prepared PAN@PPy/MXene films (55 μm thick) exhibit a high EMI shielding effectiveness (SE) of 32 dB, achieving an extraordinarily high normalized surface-specific SE (SSE/t) of up to 17 534.5 dB cm2 g−1 from 8.2 to 12.4 GHz; simultaneously, the temperatures of PAN@PPy/MXene films can be driven up to 170.5 °C at an input voltage of 4 V, and exhibit fast-response, stable, and long-term Joule heating performance. The high SSE/t and efficient Joule heating ability of the films bode potential applications in smart and wearable devices.

An increasing utilization of flexible healthcare electronics and biomedicine-related therapeutic materials urges the development of multifunctional wearable/flexible smart fabrics for personal therapy and health management. However, it is currently a challenge to fabricate multifunctional and on-body healthcare electronic devices with reliable mechanical flexibility, excellent breathability, and self-controllable joule heating effects. Here, we fabricate a multifunctional MXene-based smart fabric by depositing 2D Ti3C2Tx nanosheets onto cellulose fiber nonwoven fabric via special MXene–cellulose fiber interactions. Such multifunctional fabrics exhibit sensitive and reversible humidity response upon H2O-induced swelling/contraction of channels between the MXene interlayers, enabling wearable respiration monitoring application. Besides, it can also serve as a low-voltage thermotherapy platform due to its fast and stable electro-thermal response. Interestingly, water molecular extraction induces electrical response upon heating, i.e., functioning as a temperature alarm, which allows for real-time temperature monitoring for thermotherapy platform without low-temperature burn risk. Furthermore, metal-like conductivity of MXene renders the fabric an excellent Joule heating effect, which can moderately kill bacteria surrounding the wound in bacteria-infected wound healing therapy. This work introduces a multifunctional smart flexible fabric suitable for next-generation wearable electronic devices for mobile healthcare and personal medical therapy.

Designing degradable foams with excellent Joule heating and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding properties are crucial for protecting both the environment and low-temperature sensitive electronic devices. In this work, we used 1,3-diaminopropane carbamate (DPC) as a latent foaming-curing agent to prepare soft-hard tunable, degradable bio-based epoxy foams through one-step chemical foaming method. Subsequently, using F3 foam with outstanding reversible compressibility as the substrate, we developed a silver-plated foam, F3A3, with predominantly reflective and high EMI shielding performance via silver mirror reaction. The silver-plated foam F3A3 exhibited an electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) of 76.37 dB in the X-band (8.2–12.4 GHz), achieving a shielding efficiency as high as 99.99999%. Additionally, under an input voltage of 1.0 V, the surface saturation temperature of F3A3 rapidly increased from room temperature to 104.0 °C and demonstrated excellent stability and durability in low-voltage Joule heating. Due to the presence of dynamic ester bonds and tertiary amine structures in the F3A3 foam, it exhibited catalyst-free self-healing capability. These superior properties make the silver-plated foam highly promising for applications in military equipment, aerospace, and wearable electronic devices.

Compared with previous textiles possessing a hierarchical roughness structure for accelerating moisture evaporation, the use of Joule-heating to prepare heatable textiles is a more novel and useful way to achieve ultra-fast evaporation. Herein, we report an assembly strategy to create a functional non-woven (NW) fabric for directional moisture transportation and ultra-fast evaporation, ameliorating previous shortcomings. The resulting functional NW fabric reaches a sheet resistance of 1.116 Ω □−1, and the increased surface temperature (76.1 °C) induced by a low voltage (5 V) further results in an excellent ultra-fast evaporation rate (3.42 g h−1). Also, the moisture is transported to the outer surface of the designed fabric and spreads onto this surface. This desirable property can expand the contact area between sweat and the heatable fabric, further improving the evaporation efficiency, while maintaining the dry state of human skin. Generally, this functional textile with remarkable moisture management capabilities could be applied in winter outdoor sportswear to maintain human comfort.

Thermal-desorption has been considered as an environmentally friendly approach to regenerate the exhausted adsorbents to achieve a sustainable adsorption process. However, the traditional thermal desorption method suffers from the demanding contradiction between the desorption efficiency and energy consumption. Herein, we developed an efficient and economical thermal-desorption strategy based on the Joule heating by employing a three-dimensional carbon nanotubes (CNTs) film as the model adsorbent. The features of CNTs film with negative temperature coefficient endow the impressive heat production for the electrical resistance decreased from 341.0 Ω at 25.7 °C to 36.7 Ω at 76.5 °C. The desorption ratio of target pollutant (i.e., benzoic acid) in the continuous Joule heat induced thermal desorption process could be reached to 93.2% with the energy consumption of 0.25 kW h, which is two orders of magnitude lower than that in the indirect thermal desorption process for one ton of wastewater at the specified scale. This study proposed a green and energy-efficient strategy for thermal regeneration, and provide a method guidance for the development of green regeneration technology.

Recently, the membrane separation materials show promising applications in the fields of crude oil removal because of their low energy consumption and less secondary pollution. However, the membrane separation materials suffer problem of low separation efficiency due to the high viscosity of crude oil. Here, a superhydrophobic material with Joule heat and photothermal effect was prepared by decorating the delignified wood with reduced graphene oxide (GSH) and vinyl terminated polydimethylsiloxane (V-PDMS) through thiol-ene click reaction. The prepared PDMS@GSH wood exhibited stable superhydrophobicity with a water contact angle of 156°. Meanwhile, the GSH layer provided promising electrothermal effect that endowed the PDMS@GSH wood with excellent crude oil/water separation capability under the Joule heat with a surface temperature of 139 °C and separation rate of 1.78 × 10 5 kg m −3 h −1 . Besides, the PDMS@GSH wood displayed a good photothermal effect that assisted with the Joule heat to heat the wood for crude oil removal to save energy. More importantly, the PDMS was crosslinked with GSH on the wood via thiol-ene click reaction, leading to the stable superhydrophobicity and electrical conductivity in strong acid or alkali environment. This material has broad application prospects in crude oil clean-up due to its high separation speed and easy large-scale production.

Polymeric films with high electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness (SE) and polyfunctionality are highly desirable for wearable electronic devices. Herein, a sandwich-structured EMI shielding film with Joule heating performance composed of a poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) layer and a conductive filler layer (silver nanowire (AgNW) and MXene) was constructed by electrostatic spinning, vacuum-assisted filtration (VAF), and hot compression. An independent AgNW layer endowed the film with predominant EMI shielding performance at a low conductive filler content. A high EMI SE of 45.4 dB was obtained in the X band at a AgNW fraction of 1.28 wt %. The introduction of MXene improved the connection of the AgNW networks, thereby further enhancing the electrical conductivity and imparting the film with long-term stability. The as-obtained PVDF-AgNW/MXene film exhibited an outstanding EMI SE of 47.8 dB and only a slight decrease in EMI SE was detected after 2000 bending cycles. Besides, the PVDF-AgNW/MXene film exhibits excellent Joule heating performance. The surface temperature of the film could exceed 77 °C under an applied voltage of 2.5 V. Therefore, our sandwich-structured film with enhanced EMI shielding and Joule heating performance can be used for flexible electronic device applications in extreme conditions.

To endow transition metal carbide (MXene) fibers with satisfactory chemical resistances, high electrical conductivity and enhanced ductility, multifunctional hollow core-shell fibers with ductile polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) shell and compactly ordered MXene hollow core are fabricated with a coaxial wet-spinning assembly strategy. The partial hydroxylation of the PVDF occurred during the coagulation in the presence of ammonium hydroxide enhances the interfacial interaction of the PVDF layer with the MXene layer. The hollow core consisting of compact and ordered MXene layer provides the fibers with a high electrical conductivity of 3.08 × 10 5 S m −1 , while the PVDF shell endows the fibers with enhanced ductility and excellent resistances to acid, alkali, and seawater . The hollow core-shell structure makes the fiber lightweight, and facilitates multiple scattering of electromagnetic waves , resulting in increased electromagnetic wave absorption and attenuation. The ductile and conductive textile made of the hollow core-shell fibers with a 6 μm-thick MXene layer exhibits a high electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness of ∼60 dB. Moreover, the resultant fibers exhibit exceptional Joule heating performances for human thermal management. The high conductivity, enhanced ductility, strong chemical resistances, and satisfactory Joule heating properties make the hollow core-shell fibers promising for electromagnetic interference shielding and wearable heating applications.

Due to the excellent strength, ultra-high specific surface area and extremely small size of graphene, it is an ideal modification component for cementitious materials. However, the conventional production methods of graphene are often time-consuming, energy-intensive, and expensive, which limits its development in cementitious materials to a certain extent. Recently, flash joule heating (FJH) has been shown to be an effective and green method to synthesize graphene. Therefore, the present paper attempts to prepare graphene from waste rubber powder by FJH and study its effect on the properties of cementitious materials. The results demonstrate that the study successfully converted waste rubber powder into multilayer graphene with minimal defects. Raman spectroscopy and XRD analyses revealed characteristic peaks of graphene, while the results of TGA show that graphene have excellent thermal stability. XPS analysis indicate that the purity of graphene can reach about 87.33 %. SEM and TEM reveal its multi-layered lamellar structure. Moreover, we synthesized graphene-enhanced cement mortar, which exhibited improved mechanical properties. The pore structure was optimized, with decreased porosity and mean pore size. Microscopically, the presence of graphene led to a denser arrangement of hydration products, fewer pores, and cracks. AFM results demonstrated that graphene effectively enhanced the average elastic modulus at the nanoscale interface. This study contributes to the advancement of sustainable development by recycling waste rubber and proving the potential of graphene in cement composites.

Flexible phase change films have received considerable attention for their potential applications in personal thermal management (PTM). However, it is still a huge challenge to develop PTM materials combined with all desired functions, including high flexibility, latent heat, electrical conductivity, photothermal conversion, Joule heating, and mechanical strength. Herein, we reported a versatile flexible phase change film (DBT) for PTM by combining docosane microcapsules (C 22 -CMP) and bacterial cellulose coated with polypyrrole (BC/PPy) into thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) elastomer. C 22 -CMP microcapsules with cellulose nanocrystal (CNC)/melamine–formaldehyde (MF)/PPy as shells were prepared with CNC stabilized Pickering emulsion via in-situ formation of MF and PPy, and displayed high anti-leaking stability and latent heat. The BC/PPy with a high aspect ratio was employed as the conductive nanofiller to construct 3D conductive networks of TPU. The obtained DBT-334 film possessed high latent heat (64.3 kJ/kg), photothermal conversion ability (80 °C under light irradiation at 1.0 W/cm 2 ), electrical conductivity (9.26 S/m), Joule heating (48.1 °C at 5 V), flexibility, and sufficient mechanical strength (elongation at break of 6.0 % and Young’s modulus of 12.9 MPa), making it promising as PTM. Moreover, the applications of DBT for solar thermoelectric generation and motion sensing were also demonstrated.
