Pore modulation in coal-based hard carbon for sodium-ion batteries

Hainan Pei,Ru Wang,Ying Li,Yunfei Xue,Yaxin Chen,Jiangmin Jiang,Xiangkai Kong,Quanchao Zhuang,Zhicheng Ju

Designing the closed-pore structure of hard carbon to improve its low-voltage sodium storage capacity is both significant and challenging for the development of high-performance sodium-ion batteries. We utilized a briquetting process combined with a templating method to modulate the pore architecture. By adjusting the briquette pressure, we can regulate the degree of magnesium ion etching and the degree of cross-linking in the precursor, thereby augmenting the closed-pore content of hard carbon and boosting its sodium-storage performance at low potential. During the pre-carbonization stage, magnesium ions etched the surrounding carbon layers, generating large open pores. Experimental results demonstrated that at 3 MPa, the HC-3 anode exhibited a reversible capacity of 366 mA h g −1 at 20 mA g −1 , with a capacity of 224 mA h g −1 below 0.1 V. This study provides valuable insights into optimizing the pore structure of coal-based hard carbon anodes and enhancing low-potential sodium storage.

Laser-Induced Porous Graphene-Based Materials and Its Potential Application in Lithium–Ion Batteries

Xiao Ma,Shaoqing Wang,Zilong Fu,Hongyi Gao,Yan Shao,Xiaoguang Li,Xiaoyun Yan

Laser-induced coal-based graphene (C-LIG) is a promising field in energy materials research that focuses on converting abundant coal resources into high-value graphene-based materials using low-cost and environmentally friendly processes. In this study, we successfully produced few-layer graphene from low-volatility bituminous coal under vacuum conditions using carbon dioxide infrared laser equipment. The results showed that the laser-induced graphene consists predominantly of 2–5 layers, featuring multipore structures with smaller-size pores on the pore walls. It also exhibits large interlayer spacing with the layers arranged in a long-range disorder, demonstrating high crystallinity and significant expansion of the aromatic layers. Notably, the interlayer spacing increases as the number of graphene layers decreases. When used as an anode material for lithium–ion batteries, C-LIG demonstrates a high specific capacity of 330 mA h g–1 at 0.1 A g–1, outperforming commercial graphite-based batteries. The expended interlayer spacing and unique pore structure promote rapid lithium–ion transfer, enhancing the storage performance. These findings suggest that C-LIG holds great potential for applications in electrochemical energy storage.

Green synthesis of ultramicroporous carbons by in-situ ionic activation of coal-derived humic acids for efficient CH4/N2 separation

Chujie Zhang,Yugao Wang,Jiaxin Jing,Jinping Li,Jiangfeng Yang

Coal-based porous carbon usually has broad pore size distribution, and it remains a major challenge for achieving controllable and optimized pore size distributions in the ultramicroporous (<0.7 nm) range. In this work, coal-derived humic acid-based carbons (HACs) were successfully synthesized by in-situ ionic activation, which consumed much less KOH than the traditional KOH activation method, demonstrating environmentally friendly advantages. The prepared HACs were characterized of the concentrated ultramicroporous pore size distribution. Importantly, ultramicroporous pore size of HACs could be controlled at the sub-angstrom level by slightly adjusting the KOH amount. Dynamic breakthrough experiments and PSA process simulations strongly demonstrated the superior and applicable separation performance of HACs for CH 4 /N 2 mixtures. The investigation extends the application of in-situ ionic activation in coal-based materials and provides a cheap, green, and efficient coal-based adsorbent for low-concentration coalbed methane enrichment.

Photocatalytic synthesis of N2/H2O to ammonia on coal based GO/SiO2 supported Ru composite catalyst

Maimaiti Halidan,Wang Shixin,Awati Abuduheiremu,Xu Bo

Graphene oxide/silica (GO/SiO 2 ) containing various inorganic particles is obtained by using the Xinjiang Wucaiwan coal as carbon source and silicon source. The ruthenium/graphene oxide/silica (Ru/GO/SiO 2 ) composite was prepared by loading Ru nanoparticles on the surface of GO/SiO 2 . Then, the photocatalytic ammonia synthesis performance was investigated while characterizing the structure of Ru/GO/SiO 2 . On the one hand, the Ru can be sufficiently dispersed to make the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect enhance significantly. On the other hand, the quantum confinement effect of the defect structure on the Ru/GO/SiO 2 can effectively separate electron and hole, and it can participate in the reducing/oxidizing reaction of photocatalytic ammonia synthesis.

Hydroxylated coal-derived graphene oxide as a multifunctional interlayer enabling high-performance carbon-based perovskite solar cells

Zhenwu Zhong,Ke Zhao,Qixu Hu,Jian Cheng,Ying Wang,Wenjun Zhang,Yan Zhang,Hongyu Mi,Changyan Guo,Xiaokaiti Abulizi,Min Jae Ko,Yahong Xie

Graphene nanomaterials exhibit significant potential for carbon-based perovskite solar cells (C-PSCs); however, functionalized graphene derivatives remain relatively underexplored for interfacial engineering, particularly for cost-effective coal-derived materials. This study introduces a pioneering chemical modification approach using homemade coal-derived graphene oxide (GO) to synthesize two distinct functionalized graphene derivatives: hydroxylated graphene oxide (GO-OH) and carboxyl-functionalized graphene oxide (GO-COOH). Experimental results indicated that the excessive acidity of GO-COOH induces the degradation of perovskite film. Therefore, we constructed two device architectures: pritine (FTO/SnO 2 /MAPbI 3 /CE) and GO-OH-modified C-PSCs (FTO/SnO 2 /MAPbI 3 /GO-OH/CE) to investigate the impace of GO-OH incorporation on Photoelectric performance. The optimized device achieves a substantial 20.4 % boost in power conversion efficiency (PCE), increasing from 13.42 % to 16.16 %. Mechanistic investigations reveal that GO-OH serves a dual function: passivating deep-level defects (Pb 2+ and Pb 0 ) to optimize energy level alignment while simultaneously promoting perovskite grain growth, which enhances charge transport and boosts fill factor ( FF ) and short-circuit current density ( J sc ). Furthermore, the incorporation of the GO-OH interlayer facilitates efficient carrier extraction and maintains 90 % of its initial PCE after 30 days of ambient exposure, demonstrating remarkable stability. This work pioneers the application of functionalized coal-derived graphene oxide in C-PSCs, offering a novel and scalable strategy for enhancing both efficiency and stability.
