Electrochemical filtration process (EFP) which adopted the coal-based carbon membrane (CCM) as both anode and filter was successfully applied for organic wastewater treatment and presented the promising prospects. In this work, a further enhancement on the wastewater treatment performance of EFP was achieved through the simple Fe 2+ addition (Fe-ECM). The mechanism of the enhanced treatment performance for Fe-ECM system was explored and the effect of operational parameters on the wastewater treatment performance of Fe-ECM system were studied. Results showed that Fe-ECM system established an almost 100% removal efficiency for 250 ppm RhB simulated wastewater when 13.2 μM Fe 2+ was added in the system, which was much higher than that of membrane filtration by CCM or electrochemical filtration carbon membrane (ECM) system. The performance enhancement of Fe-ECM system was attributed to the Fenton process: the hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) was electrochemically generated on CCM via the reaction between H 2 O and dissolved oxygen, thus more hydroxyl radical (·OH) was produced in the Fe-ECM system compared with the ECM system through Fenton reaction between the generated H 2 O 2 and Fe 2+ in the solution. Moreover, the Fe-ECM system displayed a good applicability for the decontamination of different organic wastewater and a good reusability was observed for several cycles operation. This work provided an alternative way to enhance the organic wastewater treatment performance of ECM process.

Treatment of antibiotics wastewater by electrocatalytic functional membrane has drawn much attention in recent years. One of the key factors that affects the membrane performance is the electrochemical activity of the electrocatalyst , which is crucial related to its morphology. Herein, a series of well-defined ZnO with different morphologies ranging from nanorods (NRs), nanoflowers (NFs) and nanoplates (NPs) were synthesized directionally with the induction of morphology-dependent functional ions by a facile electrodeposition method, thereby realizing the controllable preparation of morphological different ZnO/CMs. The intrinsic relationship between the morphology of electrocatalysts and their electrochemical properties was revealed and results indicated that ZnO NRs/CM exhibited the highest removal efficiency for the treatment of Amoxicillin synthetic wastewater. It was attributed to the largest surface of facet (0001) of NRs exposure, which strengthen the electrochemical property of ZnO NRs/CM with the fastest electron transfer rate and the highest rate of hydroxyl radical generation.
Electrochemical filtration process, in which the active conductive membranes were employed as filtration membrane and electrochemical active electrode simultaneously, exhibited great prospect on the organic wastewater treatment. In this work, an efficient metal-free polyaniline-coated coal-based carbon membrane (PANI/CM) was fabricated via a facile electrochemical polymerization deposition method. Structural properties and electrochemical properties of PANI/CM were systematically characterized via SEM, XRD, FTIR, XPS and electrochemical workstation, etc. The electrochemical filtration treatment performance of PANI/CM for organic wastewater was systematically investigated. Results showed that the PANI was successfully deposited on the coal-based carbon membrane (CM) through electrochemical oxidative polymerization deposition method. The PANI coating can effectively improve the hydrophilicity of CM. Under the optimal preparation condition, the PANI/CM achieved a high permeability of 2564.67 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 (1410.57 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 for CM). In addition, PANI/CM possessed higher electrochemical activity and stability than CM, and the phenol and COD removal efficiencies of PANI/CM were up to >99.32% and 84.85%, respectively, under the operation condition of 2.0 V applied voltage, 50 mg·L -1 phenol, 2.5 g·L -1 Na 2 SO 4 and 2.0 ml·min −1 flow rate, which were much higher than that of CM (70.12% and 63.64%, respectively). Additionally, the electrochemical oxidation mechanism of PANI/CM during the electrochemical filtration was explored, which included both indirect oxidation and direct oxidation. Furthermore, it was verified that PANI/CM also exhibited excellent applicability for different types of organic pollutants and the long-term stability.
