Adsorption of trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole using residual carbon from coal gasification slag: Behavior, mechanism and cost-benefit analysis

Zhonghua Xue,Yali Feng,Haoran Li,Chenglong Xu,Jinrong Ju,Lianping Dong,Chongyi Yang,Weiren Bao,Jiancheng Wang,Haoyu Wang,Ruiyu Ma

The search for efficient adsorbents to mitigate the impact of antibiotic pollutants on marine ecosystems, food security and human health is a burgeoning field of research. Further, Trimethoprim (TMP) and sulfamethoxazole (SMX) are widely distributed in the marine environment and are difficult to degrade. In this research, we used gravity separation to enrich the residual carbon from the coal gasification coarse slag and used the resulting carbon-high product (GC) as a low-cost and high-efficiency adsorbent. TMP and SMX were investigated for their adsorption behavior in seawater using GC under varied conditions. The findings indicated that the adsorption capacities of TMP and SMX by GC were 5.0017 mg/g and 5.1391 mg/g, respectively. The equilibrium durations of TMP and SMX by GC were 21 min and 40 min, respectively. Various adsorption models were fitted to the adsorption behavior of two pollutants by GC. The results showed that the adsorption processes of the two pollutants were consistent with the Freundlich equation and the quasi-secondary kinetic model, suggesting that both pollutants were adsorbed on GC surface by both physical and chemical processes. GC more effectively adsorbed TMP than SMX under a competitive adsorption procedure. When we introduced molecular dynamics simulation into this research, the microscopic procedures of GC adsorbing two pollutants were investigated. The energy composition and hydrogen bond types in the adsorption process were quantified. Finally, we summarized the adsorption mechanism of GC adsorbing two pollutants. This work will pave the way for developing effective, low-cost and environmentally friendly novel materials for the adsorption and purification of antibiotic pollutants in the marine environment. This research can produce positive economic and environmental effects in the comprehensive utilization of coal gasification slag.

Extraction of lithium and gallium from coal gasification slag using alkali fusion and water leaching

Yinhai Pan,Du Wei,Shuo Yao,Haijun Zhang,Quanzhi Tian

Coal gasification slag (CGS) is rich in Li and Ga. However, few studies have focused on the extraction of Li and Ga from CGS. In the present study, the leaching of Li and Ga from CGS calcined with the alkali reagents including NaOH, KOH, Na 2 O 2 , Na 2 CO 3 and K 2 CO 3 were studied through water leaching and solid characterizations including XRD, TG-DSC and NMR. The best leaching percentages of Li and Ga from NaOH-, KOH-, Na 2 O 2 -, Na 2 CO 3 - and K 2 CO 3 -roasted products were 40.81% and 47.89%, 41.19% and 31.60%, 28.04% and 52.40%, 28.21% and 48.58%, and 34.29% and 38.61%, respectively, showing Li and Ga are difficult to be leached out. It has been proven that the formation of insoluble crystal substances (such as NaAlSiO 4 ) in alkali fusion products inhibits the leaching of Li and Ga. In addition, Li and Ga can be released from the insoluble crystal substances due to Na 2 SiO 3 in alkali fusion products can promote the dissolution of insoluble crystal substances into SiO 4 and AlO 4 species, which can improve the leaching of Li and Ga. However, part of the released Li and Ga are stabled in the structure of amorphous substances generated by SiO 4 and AlO 4 species in the form of isomorphism, reducing the leaching of Li and Ga. Thus, this work would provide guidance for the leaching of Li and Ga from CGS.

A case study of enhanced flotation of coal gasification fine slag by multiple compound collectors

Cuiling Ye,Feng Wu,Yijiang Li,Hongxin Qiu,Yanfeng Li

The flotation mechanism of multiple compound collectors called ZKC-I for coal gasification fine slag (CGFS) was revealed from the flotation kinetics, adsorption properties, bubble–particle interaction, and froth properties. The results were compared to dodecane, which represents the conventional nonpolar hydrocarbon oil collector. The flotation concentrates yield and rate constant of CGFS treated by ZKC-I were 2–3 times than those of CGFS treated by dodecane. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and wrap angle results showed that ZKC-I improved the hydrophobicity of residual carbon because of the synergistic adsorption of fatty acids, esters, and aromatic hydrocarbons in the ZKC-I on the heterogeneous surface of residual carbon particles, which enhanced the adhesion between residual carbon particles and bubble. Due to the strong carrying capacity of the bubble to residual carbon particles, the number of residual carbon particles in the froth treated by ZKC-I was more than that of the CGFS froth treated by dodecane. The high content of carbon particles in the froth resulted in great stability of the flotation froth, and the maximum height and half-life of the froth were higher than that of CGFS treated by dodecane. This study has practical and theoretical significance for the separation of coal-based solid waste.

Synthesis of large mesoporous silica for efficient CO2 adsorption using coal gasification fine slag

Xiaofen Wei,Jun Liu,Huangyu Yan,Tianshan Li,Ying Wang,Yuqiong Zhao,Guoqiang Li,Guojie Zhang

Coal gasification fine slag (CGFS), a byproduct of the coal gasification process, is currently being recognized as a resource with significant potential for value addition and sustainable applications, especially in synthesizing CO 2 adsorbents. The overarching challenges in this domain include the attainment of high-efficiency, environmentally benign transformation of CGFS into useful products, and the development of cost-effective adsorbent materials featuring precisely engineered pore structures. In this study, a hierarchical porous nanostructured silica material is synthesized rapidly, efficiently, and cost-effectively through acid leaching and alkaline dissolution-assisted hydrothermal treatment, employing CGFS as the precursor. The mass ratios of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) to CGFS range from 0.4 to 1, resulting in varying morphologies and adsorption properties. Specifically, the sample with the NaOH to CGFS ratio of 0.6 (CGFS-0.6) shows the best adsorption performance. The adsorption capacities are 2.87 mmol/g and 8.49 mmol/g at 20 °C with 15 % and 45 % CO 2 concentration, respectively. The material is characterized by a well-developed pore structure shaped like a bouquet of flowers, with a specific surface area of 457 m 2 /g and pore volume reaching 2.34 cm 3 /g. During the hydrothermal processing, silicate/aluminosilicate entities self-organized into a Si-O-Na/Al network structure, endowing the synthesized adsorbent with optimal internal porosity and silanol functionalities. The adsorption equilibrium is achieved rapidly within 10 min, and CO 2 adsorption stability remains robust across 20 successive cycles. All isothermal models of the adsorbents conform to the Sips model. This study offers a promising pathway for the value-enhanced utilization of coal-derived solid wastes.

Influence of pre-oxidization on the characterizations of coal gasification fine slag-derived activated carbons for CO2 capture

Zekai Miao,Guofeng Qiu,Xu Zhao,Fanhui Guo,Yixin Zhang,Jianjun Wu

Coal gasification fine slag (FS)-based activated carbons (ACs) for CO 2 capture provided a new method to realize the value-added utilization of FS. Furthermore, pre-oxidation treatment of carbonaceous materials is one of the most efficient possibilities to obtain developed pore structure of activated carbons to enhance the CO 2 adsorption capacity. In this study, four types of oxidizing agents (HNO 3 , NaClO, H 2 O 2 , and air) carefully modified the coal gasification fine slag residual carbon (RC) to fix the oxygen content at about 12 wt%, 15 wt%, and 18 wt%. The samples were characterized by XPS, volumetric sorption analyzer, SEM, Raman spectroscopy, TEM, TG, and TG MS. Results suggested that the specific surface area and total pore volume of the ACs were observed to increase after oxidation. The types of oxygen-containing groups also affected the pore structure of the ACs. The results showed that the content of O C O groups were the most predominant factors for high surface area, and the C O group could hinder the development of pore structure. The ACs facilitated by RC oxidation by HNO 3 had a high CO 2 storage capacity of 12.4 % at 30 °C and a fast adsorption rate, around 86 % of CO 2 uptake occurring in a span of 1 min.

Synthesis and characterization of porous carbon/mesoporous MCM-41 material from coal gasification fine slag and its CO2 adsorption performance

Zekai Miao,Rui Wu,Qinggong Liu,Xinran Han,Hao Ge,Runhao Suo,Jia Xue,Zongyun Jiang,Shengping Wang

Coal gasification fine slag (FS) containing residual carbon (RC) and slag particles (SP) can serve as carbon and silica precursor to prepare porous materials. This study reports the high performance porous carbon/mesoporous silica from gasification fine slag for CO 2 capture. Herein, FS was treated by chemical activation followed by hydrothermal treatment to prepare porous carbon/mesoporous MCM-41. The resulting material exhibited a high surface area of 1309 m 2 /g and pore volume of 1.03 cm 3 /g. After hydrothermal treatment, the mesoporous silica exhibited well-ordered hexagonal arrays of mesoporous channels. The physiochemical properties of the mesoporous silica remained nearly unchanged with the variation of hydrothermal parameters in the presence of porous carbon. The porous carbon facilitated the adsorption of dissolved silica, which promoted a second nucleation step, leading to the formation of additional nanoparticles. Those interaction weakened the effect of reaction conditions on the interaction between the precursor silica and surfactant. The porous composite showed excellent CO 2 capture performance, with a breakthrough time of 75 min in the fixed bed and a CO 2 adsorption capacity of 3.016 mmol/g. The CO 2 adsorption kinetics of the composite were consistent with the Avrami kinetic models for porous composites. This work realized the utilization of full-component fine slag to synthesize porous carbon/mesoporous MCM-41 material which was suitable for CO 2 capture.

Kinetic analysis on the mesoporous formation of coal gasification slag by acid leaching and its thermal stability

Jinyi Zhang,Jing Zuo,Yinshan Jiang,Dandan Zhu,Jiupeng Zhang,Cundi Wei

Coal gasification slag is abundant of unburned carbon and inorganic matters such as silica , alumina and calcium oxide. The mesoporous structure of coal gasification slag can be produced by acid leaching of metal ions. Therefore, it is very important to study the acid leaching process of coal gasification slag. At the same time, in order to broaden the application fields of coal gasification slag, the thermal stability of the as-prepared pore structure should meet the requirements of various occasions. Using coal gasification coarse slag (CS) and coal gasification fine slag (FS) as raw materials, this study investigated the kinetic characteristics of mesoporous formation and optimized the acid leaching conditions. The results of BET, BJH, SEM, XPS and chemical tests showed that under the condition of acid-ash ratio (molar ratio) of 1.0, liquid-solid ratio (volume/mass) of 4:1 and acid leaching temperature of 90 °C, the formation of mesoporous structure by acid leaching was a process of first-order kinetic reaction. According to the analysis of XRD , it was found that the thermal stability of both CS and FS had been greatly improved after acid leaching because of the siliceous enrichment.

Insight into the role of slag particles in coal gasification fine slag on hierarchical porous composites preparation and CO2 capture

Zekai Miao,Zhenkun Guo,Guofeng Qiu,Wenke Jia,Keran Jiao,Yixin Zhang,Jianjun Wu

Coal gasification fine slag (FS), classified as an industrial solid waste, is composed of residual carbon (RC) and slag particles (SP). The simultaneous utilization of RC and SP to prepare hierarchical porous composite (HTC) could realize the value-added utilization of FS. The role of SP in FS on HTC preparation is extremely vital and worthy of study. In this paper, FS was successfully used to synthesize HTCs for CO 2 adsorption. Orthogonal experiment was conducted to study the effect of SP on the properties of the synthesized HTCs. The changes of impregnation conditions could be effective for developing pore structure of HTCs and the surface area increased by 226 m 2 /g. Furthermore, the role of SP in FS on HTCs preparation was analyzed. After chemical activation, there was generation of many new pores in SP that the surface area and pore volume could reach 302 m 2 /g and 0.271 cm 3 /g. Besides, the leached metallic elements in the process of KOH impregnation could affect the mesopore development. The HTCs also proved to be attractive for CO 2 capture. The highest CO 2 adsorption capacity of 2.35 mmol/g at 25 °C was achieved with 5-PH-FSHCT sample. It also exhibited good selectivity of CO 2 over N 2 of 9.5. Furthermore, the sample had not only fast adsorption kinetics that it reached saturation levels in about 1.5 min, but also excellent regeneration efficiency 97% after ten cycles. All results suggest that FS has a great potential to be reused as a high performance adsorbent for practical and industrial CO 2 adsorption applications.

Insight into the synergism of residual carbon and slag particles in coal gasification fine slag on porous composites preparation for CO2 capture

Zekai Miao,Xinran Han,Hao Ge,Rui Wu,Congchao Zhang,Hai Zhu,Shengping Wang

Coal gasification fine slag (FS), as a by-product of coal gasification process, contains residual carbon (RC) and slag particles (SP). The two components can be used as raw materials to prepare porous materials. Whereas, during simultaneous utilization of RC and SP, their synergistic mechanism remains unclear. The research on the mechanism is beneficial for synthesis of the high performance CO 2 adsorbent. Herein, FS was treated by chemical activation followed by hydrothermal treatment to prepare porous composite material (FS-25-HA-HT) which had high surface area of 2194 m 2 /g and pore volume of 2.095 cm 3 /g. After chemical activation, the SP could be completely dissolved in alkali solution within around 20 min. The adsorption of porous carbon in alkali solution and strong electrostatic attraction from oxygen groups with the Si, Al-containing groups led to the increase of the concentration of Si (9825 ppm) and Al (2986 ppm) in subnatant during hydrothermal treatment. Thus, the aluminosilicate could deposit on the surface of porous carbon and pile up to form new crystal layer, which could increase the surface area and the CO 2 adsorption capacity. The adsorbent met both high uptake (5.32 mmol/g at 0 °C) and fast adsorption kinetics (adsorption equilibrium time of 3 min.). The clarification of synergism during simultaneous utilization of RC and SP offers new routes to prepare high performance adsorbent.

Development of a novel type hierarchical porous composite from coal gasification fine slag for CO2 capture

Zekai Miao,Jianjun Wu,Yanjie Niu,Zhenkun Guo,Fanhui Guo,Yixin Zhang

A novel type hierarchical porous composite is successfully synthesized through chemical activation followed by the hydrothermal treatment using coal gasification fine slag (FS) as the raw material. This study realized pore structure development for the porous composite through taking the advantage of slag particles to achieve further better CO 2 adsorption capacity. The hierarchical porous carbon (FSHPC) prepared from FS by chemical activation has obvious macropore structure. After being treated by hydrothermal synthesis method, FSHPC formed a well-developed pore structure and the surface area increased by 735 m 2 /g. Among (1–16)-FSHPC-NM samples, 4- FSHPC -NM sample has the largest surface area of 1713 m 2 /g, higher than that of porous carbon whose mineral matter is almost entirely removed (1524 m 2 /g). The mechanisms for the enhancement of pore structure by hydrothermal treatment are: (1) the decrease of the content of slag particles (SP) which acted as a ballast and blocked the pore of FSHPC; (2) the silicate/aluminosilicate film covering the meso-/macro-pores surface and the pores transformed into micro-/ meso -pore. The FSHPC-NM samples showed remarkable CO 2 adsorption performance. The 4-FSHPC-NM sample exhibits the highest CO 2 uptake of 2.97 mol/kg and 1.23 mol/kg at 25 °C and 50 °C, respectively. Compared with the CO 2 adsorption capacity of FSHPC, the CO 2 adsorption capacity increased by 1.03 mol/kg after hydrothermal treatment, due to the developed pore structure and more active sites (metallic cations) for CO 2 adsorption. 4-FSHPC-NM sample has the best CO 2 adsorption rate, whose CO 2 adsorption equilibrium is achieved within 5 min. CO 2 uptake of the 4-FSHPC-NM sample was well maintained after 15 cycles. All these results suggest that hierarchical porous composite has an enormous potential to be reused for practical and industrial CO 2 adsorption applications.

Synthesis of high yield mesoporous silica for efficient CO2 adsorption using coal gasification fine slag

Zekai Miao,Hao Ge,Xinran Han,Rui Wu,Hai Zhu,Congchao Zhang,Shengping Wang

The coal gasification fine slag (FS) is a solid waste rich in Si components. The preparation of high-performance mesoporous silica for CO 2 capture using FS as raw materials will alleviate environmental pollution. The alkali-fusion method was used to obtain the high activated Si-containing precursor which could be completely dissolved in NaOH solution with low alkalinity concentration (3 %). The mesoporous silica with highly ordered hexagonal phase was prepared which had high surface area of 1629 m 2 /g and pore volume of 0.8 cm 3 /g. The Si concentration had the great effect on the yield of mesoporous silica and the mechanism for the formation and growth of mesoporous silica between high and low Si-precursor concentration was different. In the preparation process for high yield of mesoporous silica, the silicate ions primarily tended to adsorb around the cetyltrimethylammonium bromide micelles to form nuclei and then the silicate reacted preferentially with the surface silanol groups on the existing particles rather than generating new nuclei. The condensation of the silicate at the external surface of the surfactant micelles occurred to grow into large particles. However, the mesoporous silica particles formation in the lower concentration of silicate species in the alkali solutions was mainly contributed to the interactions between silicate species and CTAB rather than the deposition of silica species. The mesoporous silica showed high CO 2 adsorption performance. The breakthrough time of MS-8 occurred at 22 min and CO 2 adsorption capacity was 2.3 mmol/g at 25 °C. All these results suggest that the silica in fine slag could be fully utilized to prepare mesoporous silica which had a great potential to be used for practical and industrial CO 2 adsorption applications.

Highly active Ni atomic clusters loaded with coal gasification slag derivatives effectively remove tetracycline by activating persulfate to enhance electron transfer ability

Zhi Song,Xiayan Zhang,Boxia Liu,Jialu Liu,Yeqiong Huang,Dongxu Han,Chuhan Xing

In this study, low-cost coal gasification slag derivative (CGD) was used as a carrier, and highly active Ni atom clusters were successfully loaded on the carrier using the electrostatic self-assembly method to prepare a Ni-CGD composite catalyst. It was used to activate persulfate (PDS) and monopersulfate (PMS) to efficiently remove tetracycline (TC) from aqueous solutions. Experimental results show that Ni-CGD/PDS and Ni-CGD/PMS system exhibits nearly 100 % degradation efficiency for TC between pH 4 and 11. PDS and PMS molecules can be adsorbed on the surface of Ni-CGD materials effectively, and a reaction center with high redox potential can be formed on the catalyst surface through the interaction between molecules. This phenomenon enhances the transfer of electrons from the relatively high-potential functional groups on the TC molecules to the catalyst surface. In addition, the strong interaction between Ni-CGD and the activator promotes the formation of more surface active sites, which can receive electrons from TC molecules, leading to the oxidative degradation of TC. Quenching experiments and EPR tests indicate that direct electron transfer is the main reaction pathway for TC degradation.
