To prepare antibacterial dental resin, a series of novel urethane dimethacrylates quaternary ammonium methacrylate monomers (UDMQAs) with different substituted alkyl chain length were synthesized, and their structures were confirmed by FTIR and 1 H-NMR spectra. The obtained UDMQAs were used to replace 2,2-Bis[4-(2-hydroxy-3-methacryloyloxypropyl)-phenyl]propane (Bis-GMA) totally as base monomers of dental resin and mixed with Tri-ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) at the mass ratio of 50/50. The properties of these prepared resins like antibacterial activity, double bond conversion (DC), polymerization shrinkage, flexural strength (FS), and modulus (FM), water sorption and sol fraction were investigated. The most commonly used dental resin Bis-GMA/TEGDMA (50wt/50wt) was chosen as a reference. The results showed that UDMQAs could endow dental resin with antibacterial activity. Compared with Bis-GMA-based dental resin, UDMQAs-based resin had the same or higher DC, lower polymerization shrinkage, lower flexural strength and modulus, and higher water sorption and sol fraction. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The accumulation of bacteria at the margin of dental resin composites is the main reason for secondary caries, which may further cause failure of prosthodontics. Therefore, antibacterial activity is highly required. However, the addition of antibacterial agents or fillers weakens the mechanical or aesthetic properties of composites. In this work, regular-shaped SiO2–ZnO complex clusters (CCs) constructed by spray-drying technology can enhance the antibacterial activity while maintaining the mechanical and aesthetic properties of dental resin composites. The results show that the regular shape and closely packed structure of nanoparticle clusters were not corrupted by the introduction of ZnO particles. As compared to resin composites filled with SiO2 nanoparticle clusters, the comprehensive performances of composites containing SiO2–ZnO CCs were further improved, and the composites filled with 70 wt% Si66Zn4 (CCs composed of 66/70 SiO2 and 4/70 of ZnO) exhibited superior antibacterial capability (antibacterial ratio >99.9%) and acceptable depth of cure, degree of conversion, and biocompatibility. The cooperation of different fillers is highly essential for resin composites to achieve enhanced multifunctional performance.

In dentistry, the use of bisphenol A glycidyl methacrylate (Bis-GMA) is being questioned since bisphenol A is regarded as an endocrine disruptor. As alternative candidates to Bis-GMA, bio-based dental resins face the crucial challenge of low mechanical strength and high water sorption. In this study, a novel guaiacol-based dimethacrylate containing fluorenyl cardo-structure was developed to effectively improve the hydrophobicity, enhance the mechanical properties, and reduce the polymerization shrinkage of bio-based dental restorative resins. Therefore, 9, 9-bis(3-methoxy-4-glycerolate methacrylate)fluorene (BMHF-GMA) was synthesized from a new guaiacol-based bisphenol, 9, 9-bis(3-methoxy-4-phenol)fluorene (BMHF), which is a lower estrogenic activity bisphenol monomer than commercial bisphenols from the results of cell proliferation test. The experimental dental resin (5 MHMA5T) was prepared containing BMHF-GMA and triethylene glycol dimethacrylate in a 1:1 ratio. The control group (5B5T) replaced BMHF-GMA completely with Bis-GMA. Evaluation of both dental resins revealed that 5 MHMA5T possessed comparable double bond conversion (>50 % in 20 s), better volumetric polymerization shrinkage (7.19 ± 0.09 %), shrinkage stress (0.92 ± 0.01 MPa in 1200 s), water sorption (39.9 ± 0.52 μg mm −3 ), water solubility (0.99 ± 0.04 μg mm −3 ) and lower cytotoxicity compared with 5B5T. 5 MHMA5T had superior mechanical properties (flexural strength: 122.30 ± 5.00 MPa; flexural modulus: 3.49 ± 0.02 GPa; Vickers hardness number: 25.21 ± 0.56 HV). Especially, after water immersion, it still maintained adequate mechanical properties (flexural strength: 97.34 ± 5.00 MPa; flexural modulus: 2.92 ± 0.02 GPa; Vickers hardness number: 19.33 ± 0.61 HV). Therefore, the new dimethacrylate BMHF-GMA shows great potential in complex and wet oral environments and offers a promising alternative to Bis-GMA in dental restorative resins.

Poor mechanical properties and bacterial infection are the main problems faced by dental restorative resins in clinical use. In this study, graphene quantum dots (GQDs) grafted with imidazole groups and mesoporous silica (MSN) are co-filled in a dental resin to impart excellent antimicrobial activity and mechanical properties to the dental resin. The higher specific surface area of GQDs and MSN results in an increased contact area with the resin matrix, which enhances the strength of the dental composite resin. The introduction of GQDs significantly improves the antimicrobial activity of the resin. The inhibition efficiency of the composite resin against Streptococcus mutans reached 99.9% with the addition of GQDs at only 0.2 wt.%. When MSN and GQDs are co-filled, MSN interferes with the release of GQDs, thus reducing the antimicrobial activity of the dental resin but improving the cyto-compatibility. By reasonably adjusting the amount of GQDs and MSN, the dental composite resin can exhibit excellent antimicrobial properties, mechanical properties and cyto-compatibility at the same time.

Objectives The aim of this study was to develop a new composite resin to solve the problem of volume shrinkage of conventional dental restorative composite resins during the curing process in order to improve their mechanical properties and reduce the risk of restoration failure. Methods We synthesized the mercapto-alkenyl click chemical reaction product (MN-POSS) of acrylate-based POSS (MAP-POSS) with N-Acetylcysteine (NAC) using a bifunctional polysilsesquioxane modification technique and improved its dispersion in the resin matrix by physicochemical methods. In addition, methacrylate-based epoxy POSS (ME-POSS) was further synthesized and used to modify acrylate dental resins to form a free radical-cation hybrid light-curing system. Results The results showed that the composites modified with MN-POSS significantly improved mechanical strength, while the application of ME-POSS effectively reduced polymerization shrinkage, improved the water absorption and dissolution properties of the materials, and enhanced mechanical properties and hardness. This study provides new ideas and material solutions to improve the performance of dental restorative materials. Significance Both of these improved solutions demonstrate the potential of bifunctional POSS as a modified filler, providing new ideas and methods for the design of future dental restorative materials.

Niobium dioxide (NbO 2 ) features a high theoretical capacity and an outstanding electron conductivity, which makes it a promising alternative to the commercial graphite negative electrode. However, studies on NbO 2 based lithium-ion battery negative electrodes have been rarely reported. In the present work, NbO 2 nanoparticles homogeneously embedded in a carbon matrix are synthesized through calcination using a dental resin monomer (bisphenol A glycidyl dimethacrylate, Bis-GMA) as the solvent and a carbon source and niobium ethoxide (NbETO) as the precursor. It is revealed that a low Bis-GMA/NbETO mass ratio (from 1:1 to 1:2) enables the conversion of Nb (V) to Nb (IV) due to increased porosity induced by an alcoholysis reaction between the NbETO and Bis-GMA. The as-prepared NbO 2 /carbon nanohybrid delivers a reversible capacity of 225 mAh g −1 after 500 cycles at a 1 C rate with a Coulombic efficiency of more than 99.4% in the cycles. Various experimental and theoretical approaches including solid state nuclear magnetic resonance, ex situ X-ray diffraction, differential electrochemical mass spectrometry, and density functional theory are utilized to understand the fundamental lithiation/delithiation mechanisms of the NbO 2 /carbon nanohybrid. The results suggest that the NbO 2 /carbon nanohybrid bearing high capacity, long cycle life, and low gas evolution is promising for lithium storage applications.

Nanocomposites have been used in various industries due to their excellent properties. For some of them, high filler content (over 50 wt%) is beneficial to improving their performances. This study aims to explore the network model construction and properties of high filler content dental resin composites (DRCs). An improved multistep dynamic cross-linking procedure was proposed and firstly applied to construct the reasonable molecular model of high filler content DRCs. The predicted elastic modulus and stress–strain results of DRCs with different nanofiller contents show that the DRCs with a 70 wt% filler content have the most excellent mechanical properties. Furthermore, the dynamic property study indicates that the diffusion coefficient of matrices firstly decreased and then increased with the nanofiller content increasing from 0 to 80 wt%, reaching the lowest value at 70 wt%. The migration of resin matrices can be limited by nanofillers at the content within 70 wt%. However, when the filler content is excessively high (80 wt%), the stability of matrices is destroyed and the fractional free volume of DRCs sharply increases, resulting in a decrease of mechanical properties of DRCs. The findings of this study deepen the understanding of structures and properties of DRCs at the atomic/molecular scales. Graphical Abstract

Objectives In dental resin composites (DRCs), the structure of fillers has a great impact on the mechanical behavior . The purpose of this study is to gain an in-depth understanding of the reinforcement mechanism and mechanical behavior of DRCs with nanoparticle clusters (NCs) fillers, thereby providing a guidance for the optimal design of filler structures for DRCs. Methods This work pioneers the use of discrete element method (DEM) simulations combined with experiments to study the mechanical behavior and reinforcement mechanism of DRCs with NCs fillers. Results The uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) of NCs-reinforced DRCs have an improvement of 9.58 % and 15.02 % in comparison with nanoparticles (NPs) and microparticles (MPs), respectively, because of the ability of NCs to deflect cracks and absorb stress through gradual fracturing. By using NCs and NPs as co-fillers, the internal defects of DRCs can be reduced, resulting in a further improvement of UCS of DRCs by 6.21 %. Furthermore, the mechanical properties of DRCs can be effectively improved by increasing the strength of NCs or reducing the size of NCs. Significance This study deepens the understanding of relationship between filler structure and mechanical behavior in DRCs at the mesoscale and provides an avenue for the application of DEM simulations in composite materials.

Dental caries, particularly secondary caries, which is the main contributor to dental repair failure, has been the subject of extensive research due to its biofilm-mediated, sugar-driven, multifactorial, and dynamic characteristics. The clinical utility of restorations is improved by cleaning bacteria nearby and remineralizing marginal crevices. In this study, a novel multifunctional dental resin composite (DRC) composed of Sr-N-co-doped titanium dioxide (Sr-N-TiO2) nanoparticles and nano-hydroxyapatite (n-HA) reinforcing fillers with improved antibacterial and mineralization properties is proposed. The experimental results showed that the anatase-phase Sr-N-TiO2nanoparticles were synthesized successfully. After this, the curing depth (CD) of the DRC was measured from 4.36 ± 0.18 mm to 5.10 ± 0.19 mm, which met the clinical treatment needs. The maximum antibacterial rate againstStreptococcus mutans(S. mutans) was 98.96%, showing significant inhibition effects (p< 0.0001), which was experimentally verified to be derived from reactive oxygen species (ROS). Meanwhile, the resin exhibited excellent self-remineralization behavior in an SBF solution, and the molar ratio of Ca/P was close to that of HA. Moreover, the relative growth rate (RGR) of mouse fibroblast L929 indicated a high biocompatibility, with the cytotoxicity level being 0 or I. Therefore, our research provides a suitable approach for improving the antibacterial and mineralization properties of DRCs.Keywords:dental resin composite;dental caries;secondary caries;titanium dioxide;antibacterial property;remineralization

Dental resin-based composites have been used for more than 50 years. The size and the structure of inorganic filler have a great effect on the mechanical properties of the composite resin. In this study, novel micro-sized clusters of hydroxyapatite nanorods (MCHN) were designed and conveniently fabricated by spray drying combined with heat treatment. The effects of the aspect ratio of primary hydroxyapatite nanorods (HN), suspension concentration for spray drying and heat treatment temperature were explored. The results indicated that HN with a lower aspect ratio of 2 (HN-2) and a heat treatment temperature of 500 °C were beneficial to the construction of high-performance MCHN (MCHN-2). As compared to HN-2, MCHN-2 had a further increased filling amount by 10%. More importantly, the flexural strength, flexural modulus and compressive strength of the composite resin were greatly improved by 36.3%, 11.4% and 56.6%, respectively. Therefore, it could be envisioned that MCHN could have a great potential in dental restorative application.

Objective The purpose of this study is to develop a mathematical model for efficient prediction of the packing density of different filler formulations in dental resin composites (DRCs), and to study properties of DRCs at the maximum filler loading (MFL), thereby providing an effective guidance for the design of filler formulations in DRCs to obtain excellent properties. Methods The packing density data generated by discrete element model (DEM) simulation were used to re-derive the parameters of 3-parameter model. The modifier effect was also induced to modify the 3-parameter model. DRCs with 10 filler formulations were selected to test properties at the MFL. The packing densities of binary and ternary mixes in DRCs were calculated by 3-parameter model to explore the regularity of composite packing. Results The predicted packing density was validated by simulation and experimental results, and the prediction error is within 1.40 vol%. The optimization of filler compositions to obtain a higher packing density is beneficial to enhancing the mechanical properties and reducing the polymerization shrinkage of DRCs. In binary mixes, the maximum packing density occurs when the volume fraction of small fillers is 0.35−0.45, and becomes higher with the reduction of particle size ratio. In ternary mixes, the packing density can reach the maximum value when the volume fractions of large and small fillers are in the 0.5−0.75 and 0.15−0.4 ranges, respectively. Significance The modified 3-parameter model can provide an effective method to design the multi-level filler formulations of DRCs, thereby improving the performance of the materials.

The good mechanical performances and caries inhibition of resin composites (RCs) are of great importance in dental restoration. Generally, the addition of SiO 2 can improve the mechanical properties of RCs, while the introduction of fluoride (F) ions is capable of preventing caries. In this work, we first report the use of CaF 2 /SiO 2 core–shell nanoparticles (CaF 2 /SiO 2 NPs) as novel fillers for developing RCs with excellent mechanical properties and sustained F release. The results show that the superior performances of RCs can be obtained by filling 50 wt.% CaF 2 /50%SiO 2 NPs, where the flexural strength, flexural modulus, compressive strength, and hardness were, respectively, increased by 111.5%, 41.4%, 61.7% and 66.8%, compared with the RCs filled with CaF 2 nanoparticles. In addition, the initial F-release rate of RCs containing 50 wt.% CaF 2 /50%SiO 2 NPs was 2.5 ± 0.4 μg/(h cm 2 ), while the sustained release rate and the F release ratio were 0.96 ± 0.15 μg/h·cm 2 and 5.22‰ after 1632 h (68 days), respectively. It was much more stable and sustained compared with the counterpart filled with CaF 2 NPs. Therefore, it could be envisioned that CaF 2 /SiO 2 NPs have a great potential as inorganic fillers in dental RCs. Graphical abstract
