Cow Dung-Based Biochar Materials Prepared via Mixed Base and Its Application in the Removal of Organic Pollutants

Xiaoxin Chen,Gengxin Yu,Yuanhui Chen,Shanshan Tang,Yingjie Su

Cow dung (CD) is a waste product of livestock production. Improper disposal of a large amount of CD will cause environmental pollution. In this work, three biochar materials based on CD (BMCD) were prepared by using three types of base, including KOH, NaOH, and mixed base (MB, a mixture of equal mass NaOH and KOH) as activators to investigate the different physicochemical properties of BMCDs (BMCD-K, BMCD-Na, and BMCD-MB). The objective was to verify the effectiveness of MB activation in the preparation of biochar materials. The results show that MB has an effect on the structural characteristics of BMCDs. In particular, the surface area and total pore volume, the specific surface area, and the total pore volume of BMCD-MB (4081.1 m2g−1and 3.0118 cm3g−1) are significantly larger than those of BMCD-K (1784.6 m2g−1and 1.1142 cm3g−1) and BMCD-Na (1446.1 m2g−1and 1.0788 cm3g−1). While synthetic dye rhodamine B (RhB) and antibiotic tetracycline hydrochloride (TH) were selected as organic pollutant models to explore the adsorption performances, the maximum adsorption capacities of BMCD-K, BMCD-NA and BMCD-MB were 951, 770, and 1241 mg g−1for RhB, 975, 1051, and 1105 mg g−1for TH, respectively, which were higher than those of most adsorbents. This study demonstrated that MB can be used as an effective activator for the preparation of biochar materials with enhanced performance. Keywords:industrial wastewater;organic pollutants;cow dung;biochar materials;adsorption

Controlled synthesis of porous carbon materials from cow dung biomass and analysis of their adsorption properties: Modulation of lignocellulosic fractions and pore structure formation

Wurentuya Bhnar,Agula Bao

Globally, a large amount of agricultural waste is generated every year, and improper disposal can lead to serious environmental pollution. In particular, due to the expansion of large-scale cattle farming, the accumulation of large quantities of cattle manure can cause various environmental problems. Using agricultural waste, such as cattle manure, to produce porous carbon materials can enhance its resource utilization while mitigating its environmental impact. Accordingly, in this study, porous carbon materials were synthesized by partially degrading the lignocellulosic fractions in cow dung through a series of processes, including NaOH pretreatment under varying conditions (concentration, time, and temperature), pre‑carbonization, and KOH activation. Furthermore, the pore-formation mechanism of the porous carbon materials was analyzed in three stages: NaOH pretreatment, pre‑carbonization at 600 °C in an N 2 atmosphere, and KOH activation. Key factors influencing the structures of the materials were changes in the contents and linkages of cellulose, lignin, and hemicellulose. Among the tested samples, the pretreated CA-4-6-70 sample demonstrated the lowest lignin content and the highest cellulose content. Following pre‑carbonization and KOH activation, the specific surface area of this material reached 1402 m 2 /g, with a microporous area of 912 m 2 /g. Furthermore, the porous carbon materials synthesized in this study exhibited good CO 2 and methyl orange adsorption performance, demonstrating their potential for applications in environmental pollutant treatment.

Pyrolysis temperature effect on biochar-derived cow manure: Physicochemical properties and adsorption behavior toward organic dyes

Thanh-Binh Nguyen,Quoc-Hoang Do,Chiu-Wen Chen,Wei-Hsin Chen,Xuan-Thanh Bui,Cheng-Di Dong

Background This study investigates the synthesis of biochar from cow manure at various pyrolysis temperatures and its effectiveness in dye adsorption, focusing on how temperature influences the adsorption capacities of biochar towards MB and MO. Methods Biochar was produced at four pyrolysis temperatures (300, 500, 700, and 900 °C), labeled CMBC-x. Adsorption capacities for MB and MO were tested. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) identified functional groups involved in dye adsorption. Findings Biochar produced at 900 °C (CMBC900) showed the highest adsorption capacities: 200 mg g -1 for MB and 147 mg g -1 for MO. For a dye mixture, CMBC900 adsorbed 104.5 mg g -1 of MB and 98.7 mg g -1 of MO, indicating efficient separation. CMBC900 maintained high efficiency after ten cycles, with 97.5 % for MB and 90.5 % for MO. These findings highlight the robustness and long-term potential of CMBC900 as an adsorbent. Converting agricultural waste into biochar offers an economically viable solution for waste management and environmental protection by removing harmful dyes from wastewater.

Cow manure biochar for activation of peroxymonosulfate to degrade 17β-estradiol: Performance and mechanism

Gongduan Fan,Chen Lin,Wu You,Yiqing Song,Xingfeng Cao,Jing Luo,Jianyong Zou,Zhanglin Hong,Kai-Qin Xu

Estrogens are widely detected in the environment and can strongly disrupt the endocrine systems of humans in extremely minute concentrations. Therefore, it is imperative to address possible 17β-estradiol (17β-E2) pollution and explore resourceful utilization methods from cow manure, which contains estrogen. In this study, cow manure biochar (CBC) was successfully prepared and used for the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS), attaining a 17β-E2 degradation rate exceeding 90 % within a mere 10 min. Optimal degradation performance was achieved at 2 mg/L 17β-E2 concentration, 2 mM PMS concentration, and 0.2 g/L CBC concentration. Furthermore, the influence of biochar-activated PMS on estrogen degradation was thoroughly explored under various environmental factors. The key reactive oxygen species were identified as O 2 – and 1 O 2 by conducting quenching experiments and delayed experiments. This study elucidated the occurrence of direct electron conduction and the generation of reactive oxygen species to degrade 17β-E2. Furthermore, the phenol group on the benzene ring and the hydroxyl group on the cyclopentane in 17β-E2 as the susceptible reaction sites during the degradation process were predicted using density functional theory (DFT). This study presents promising opportunities for the resourceful utilization of cattle manure and the mitigation of environmental pollution by endocrine disruptors.

Preparation of cellulose carbon material from cow dung and its CO2 adsorption performance

Ren Wu,Agula Bao

With the development of large-scale animal husbandry, large amounts of manure have brought great harm to the ecological environment, thus limiting sustainable development of human and animal husbandry. Biomass carbon has been extensively studied as an adsorption material. The rational use of cow dung as biomass has important research significance for the ecological environment. However, most previous work has directly converted biomass to carbon, which limits its application due to the poor quality stability of the biomass porous carbon and large variations in performance resulting from the complexity of biomass composition and microstructure. In this work, porous carbons were prepared after pretreatment of cow dung with NaOH-urea solution to extract cellulose and activate KOH. The results showed that the materials prepared under the optimal conditions (pre-carbonization temperature of 600 °C, cellulose-to-KOH ratio of 1:1) exhibited an ultrahigh specific surface area (1345 m 2 /g) and micropore ratio (74.24%). The capacities for adsorption of CO 2 at 273 K and 298 K and 1 bar were as high as 4.61 mmol/g and 3.26 mmol/g, respectively. This study expands the application range for cellulose and has significance for future preparation of porous carbon materials by extracting cellulose from biomass.

Lignocellulose Nanoparticles Extracted from Cattle Dung as Pickering Emulsifiers for Microencapsulating Phase Change Materials

Yugao Ding,Liu Feng,Zhe Zhang,Sihao Zhang,Xuelian Zhang,Yingzhan Li,Xiong Fang,Xiaowen Hu,Xiaojing Wang,Kam Chiu Tam,Guofu Zhou,Zhen Zhang

Nanocelluloses have attracted much attention in both academic and industrial fields. However, nanocelluloses, including cellulose nanocrystals and cellulose nanofibers, are generally produced by a “top-down” strategy with tedious violent chemical reactions and energy-intensive mechanical treatments. Fabrication of nanocellulose via facile and green approaches with a low cost is always challenging and promising. The digestion of grass by ruminants resembles the extraction processing of nanocelluloses from plants. Herein, lignocellulose nanoparticles (LCNPs) were extracted from cattle dung via facile filtration and centrifugation separation methods, indicating that LCNPs occurred naturally in cattle dung and were formed during digestion of grass. LCNPs are mainly composed of lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose and possess an average diameter of ∼50 nm, high surface charge of −36.2 mV, and outstanding water dispersity. LCNPs show excellent Pickering emulsifying ability just as classic nanocellulose due to their partial wettability with both oil and water phases. LCNP stabilized Pickering emulsions were then employed as templates to prepare phase change material (PCM) microcapsules with melamine-formaldehyde shells to prevent leakage of PCM. The obtained PCM microcapsules display good thermal stability, durability, high PCM core content of 88.9% and phase change enthalpy of 214.3 J g–1, and are promising for thermal energy storage and temperature regulation applications. This study provides a sustainable approach to extract nanocellulose as Pickering emulsifier and will facilitate the high-value-added utilization of cattle dung.

Impact of mineral components in cow manure biochars on the adsorption and competitive adsorption of oxytetracycline and carbaryl

Mengwei Li,Zhendong Zhao,Xiaodan Wu,Wenjun Zhou,Lizhong Zhu

In recent years, biochar has been well-documented in the literature as a promising soil amendment for the sorption and immobilization of organic contaminants in contaminated soils via its organic functional groups. In this study, original and demineralized cow manure biochars were applied with the aim to evaluate the impact of their mineral component on adsorption and competitive adsorption of oxytetracycline and carbaryl. Adsorption increased greatly for oxytetracycline but decreased slightly for carbaryl after demineralization. Mineral components significantly enhanced overall adsorption of carbaryl but slightly inhibited that of oxytetracycline to biochars, because the dominant sorption mechanisms of oxytetracycline and carbaryl on demineralized biochars were established as pore-filling effects and specific-site sorption, respectively. Competitive adsorption was observed in the binary-solute sorption system, where oxytetracycline outcompeted carbaryl on original biochars, however, carbaryl showed a greater competitive adsorption to oxytetracycline on demineralized biochars. Furthermore, demineralization treatment weakened the competition strength of oxytetracycline to carbaryl but enhanced that of carbaryl to oxytetracycline. This work demonstrated that the demineralization treatment altered the physicochemical properties of biochars and the dominant sorption mechanisms of oxytetracycline and carbaryl, leading to their different changes on competition strength. The results are useful for the application of biochars in the remediation of combined pollution in agricultural soils.

Effects of Adding Zero Valent Iron on the Anaerobic Digestion of Cow Manure and Lignocellulose

Men Yu,Zheng Lei,Zhang Lingling,Li Zifu,Wang Xuemei,Zhou Xiaoqin,Cheng Shikun,Bao Wenjun

Previous studies showed that adding zero valent iron (ZVI) can increase the methane production and degradation rate of organic waste by improving the performance of anaerobic digester. However, our study firstly found that ZVI (37 μm, 10 g/L) inhibited the anaerobic digestion (AD) of cow manure and lignocellulose. ZVI significantly increased the methanogenic rate of cow manure in the first 6 days, but decreased the accumulative methane yield and volatile fatty acids yield by 10.3 and 12%, respectively. The effect of ZVI on AD of liquid biomass separated from cow manure was positive, but the effect on solid biomass was negative. These results indicated that ZVI enhanced the AD of easily biodegradable organics but inhibited the biodegradation of refractory organics (lignocellulose). By analyzing the varying effects of ZVI in diverse anaerobic systems, it was found that the effects were influenced by the characteristics of substrate and inoculum-substrate ratio. This study suggested that only proper ZVI addition can improve the AD process depending on the feeding materials.

Photothermal-Induced Multimodal Antibacterial Dressing Comprising N-Halamine Hydrogel Loaded with Cow Dung Biochar for Infected Wound Healing

Mengnan Chu,Shuang Zhao,Tingrui Yuan,Jing Yan,Xianliang Sheng,Shi Lan,Alideertu Dong

Disposal of the cow dung pollutants arising from cattle farming threatens the environment and public safety in diverse ways. To date, researchers have worked on developing new pathways to control and manage cattle farming wastes, but most do not involve the reuse of these wastes. Herein, a cow dung biochar-modulated photothermal N-halamine hydrogel (i.e., PAN/CA/CoBC/pMAG–Cl) was designed for converting cow dung into biochar (CoBC), which was then coupled with a 3D interpenetrating hydrogel network to treat infected wounds. The PAN/CA/CoBC/pMAG–Cl hydrogel exhibited excellent synergistic antibacterial performance against 106 CFU·mL–1 Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) within 60 min. The bactericidal effect was multimodal, involving CoBC-based photothermal killing (i.e., temperature as high as 80.5 °C) after 808 nm near-infrared light irradiation for 10 min, contact killing through the strong oxidative characteristic of N-halamine (pMAG–Cl), and release killing via active halogens (i.e., Cl+) reinforced by the photothermal action of CoBC. The S. aureus-infected wound model in vivo demonstrated that the PAN/CA/CoBC/pMAG–Cl hydrogel worked as an ideal wound dressing, capable of resisting bacterial infection, accelerating the healing process, and promoting epithelial regeneration. This proposed strategy could indicate a new way for the disposal of cow dung pollutant and its reuse in antibacterial-associated applications.

Synthesis of a novel environmental-friendly biocarbon composite and its highly efficient removal of uranium(VI) and thorium(IV) from aqueous solution

Jun Liao,Ting Xiong,Zhibo Zhao,Ling Ding,Wenkun Zhu,Yong Zhang

The development and utilization of nuclear energy produced a large amount of uranium(VI)/thorium(IV)-containing wastewater, which would be harmful to the environment. The enrichment of the radioactive ions from wastewater using a green and environmentally friendly technology was great important to the protection of water environment and the resource utilization of energy materials. In this work, a novel cow manure-derived biocarbon-based composite was prepared by impregnation-carbonization technology for the separation of thorium(IV) and uranium(VI) from water. The composite could efficiently separate the target ions under acidic condition (pH = 4.5) with high saturated separation capacities (675.1 mg/g for uranium(VI) and 710.4 mg/g for thorium(IV)), high removal percentages (97.5% for uranium(VI) and 99.8% for thorium(IV)), fast separation rates in the initial stage of separation process (10.3 mg/(g·min) for thorium(IV) and 4.6 mg/(g·min) for uranium(VI) and good reusability after five cycles. Even in 1.0 g/L of NaCl solution, the removal efficiencies still exceeded 88.4% for uranium(VI) and 93.1% for thorium(IV). These results exposed the perfect performance of the cow manure-derived biochar-based composite in thorium(IV) and uranium(VI) separation. Moreover, various models were used to fit the experimental data, which revealed that the uranium(VI)/thorium(IV) separation on the biocarbon composite was monolayer chemical adsorption and the complexation was mainly the way for capturing uranium(VI) and thorium(IV). This work might offer a new perspective for the resource management of animal manure and a prospect for the practical application of biochar in thorium(IV) and uranium(VI) recovery.

Investigation on cadmium ions removal from water by different raw materials-derived biochars

Guanyi Chen,Chuanbin Wang,Jingnan Tian,Juping Liu,Qingjie Ma,Bin Liu,Xiangping Li

Removal of heavy metals from water by biochar is necessary and benefit for human life and environmental protection. In this study, biochar from sludge (SB), cow dung (DB), corn stalk (CB) and willow branches (WB) were synthesized and activated by potassium hydroxide (KOH), and these biochars were used as adsorbent to remove divalent cadmium ion (Cd(II)) from water. The materials were further characterized by using N 2 -sorption, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), elemental analysis, thermal gravity and differential thermal gravity (TG/DTG) and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). It found that external surface area of biochar had significant effect on the adsorption of Cd(II). Batch adsorption experiments were performed to investigate the effects of various parameters, including initial pH value, adsorbent dosage, concentration of Cd(II) and adsorption time. The results showed that CB had a better adsorption ability to remove Cd(II) from water than the other biochars. The pseudo-second-order and pseudo-first-order kinetics models were introduced to study the adsorption kinetics of Cd(II) by CB. The Freundlich model and Langmuir model were both fit for the experimental isotherm data. The maximum adsorption capacity of 40 mg/g was obtained by CB according to the experimental isotherm data by Langmuir model.

Response of cattle manure anaerobic digestion to zinc oxide nanoparticles: Methane production, microbial community, and functions

Luqing Qi,Xuna Liu,Yanjun Miao,Efthalia Chatzisymeon,Ping Yang,Hongyan Lu,Lina Pang

The increasing use of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) as feed additives has raised huge environmental concerns in the anaerobic digestion (AD) of livestock wastes. In this study the 30-day effect of ZnO NPs on AD performance of cattle manure was investigated under optimal conditions (temperature=55 °C, initial pH=10, total solids contents=10%), which were obtained from response surface methodology . Results showed that ZnO NPs (5–100 mg/g TS) promoted the accumulation of soluble chemical oxygen demand , soluble protein and polysaccharide , but inhibited their following fermentation and methane production processes. This inhibition became stronger as ZnO NPs concentration increased, leading to the methane production declined by 84.55% (5 mg/ g TS), 92.39% (30 mg/g TS), and 93.72% (100 mg/g TS), respectively. High-throughput sequencing results demonstrated that the decrease in the abundances of functional bacteria from 72.11% to 11.24% (in families Ruminococcaceae and Lachnospiraceae ), and of methanogens from 96.82% to < 1% (in genus Methanothermobacter) led to poor fermentation and methanogenesis , respectively. Predictive functional analysis indicated that ZnO NPs can enhance abundances of AD-friendly functional genes instead of possible genetic expression, resulting in the low methane production. Our findings highlight a deep understanding of the role of ZnO NPs in cattle manure AD and are critical for guiding feed additive application.
