A Novel Ca-Modified Biochar for Efficient Recovery of Phosphorus from Aqueous Solution and Its Application as a Phosphorus Biofertilizer

Yue Xu,Huan Liao,Jing Zhang,Haijun Lu,Xinghua He,Yi Zhang,Zhenbin Wu,Hongyu Wang,Minghua Lu

Recovery phosphorus (P) from P-contaminated wastewater is an efficient and environmentally friendly mean to prevent water pollution and alleviate the P shortage crisis. In this study, oyster shell as calcium sources and peanut shells as carbon sources (mass ratio 1:1) were used to prepare a novel Ca-modified biochar (OBC) via co-pyrolysis, and its potential application after P adsorption as a P biofertilizer for soil was also investigated. The results shown that OBC had a remarkable P adsorption capacity from wastewater in a wide range of pH 4–12. The maximum P adsorption capacity of OBC was about 168.2 mg/g with adsorbent dosage 1 g/L, which was about 27.6 times that of the unmodified biochar. The adsorption isotherm and kinetic data were better described by Langmuir isotherm model (R2> 0.986) and the pseudo second-order model (R2> 0.975), respectively. Characterization analysis of OBC before and after P adsorption by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and specific surface area and porosity analyzer (BET) indicated that the remarkable P adsorption capacity of OBC was mainly ascribed to chemical precipitation, electrostatic adsorption, and hydrogen bonding. Pot experiment results showed that OBC after P adsorption could significantly promote the germination and growth ofSpinacia, which manifested that OBC after P adsorption exhibited a good ability to be reused as P fertilizer for soil. Keywords:phosphorous;oyster shell;peanut shell;biochar;P biofertilizer

Adsorption performance and its mechanism of aqueous As(III) on polyporous calcined oyster shell-supported Fe–Mn binary oxide

Yao Shi,Yifei Xing,Zhilian Song,Xueming Dang,Huimin Zhao

Fe–Mn binary oxide (FMBO) is a promising adsorbent for As(III) removal through combined adsorption and oxidation. The calcined oyster shell-supported Fe–Mn binary oxide (FMBO/OS) adsorbent was synthesized by the co-precipitation method. Results indicated that the calcined oyster shell, as a carrier, improved the stability of FMBO and its adsorption capacity for As(III). The maximum adsorption capacity of FMBO/OS on As(III) reached 140.5 mg·g −1 . Under pH 5.0 and 25°C, the removal efficiency of FMBO/OS to As(III) solution (C 0 = 10 mg·L −1 ) reached 87% within 12 h. Moreover, based on the characterization analyses, the removal mechanisms of As(III) were deduced to include the combined adsorption and oxidation process of FMBO and the synergistic effect of oyster shells. This work provides new insights into synthesizing efficient and green adsorbents to remove aqueous As(III). Meanwhile, it provides technical support for reusing waste biomass materials such as the oyster shell. Practitioner Points FMBO/OS was prepared by a simple hydrothermal co-precipitation method. The carrier alleviates the agglomeration of Fe–Mn oxides. The adsorbent shows a strong adsorption capacity of As(III) and good selectivity. The good results benefit from the synergistic effect of calcium arsenate generation. The prepared adsorbent can adsorb arsenic in real samples.

Utilization of activated sludge and shell wastes for the preparation of Ca-loaded biochar for phosphate removal and recovery

Jing Li,Lu Cao,Bing Li,Haiming Huang,Wei Yu,Cairui Sun,Kehua Long,Brent Young

The activated sludge-based biochar modified by metals performs well for the phosphate adsorbent. The cost of the modification materials and the follow-up treatment of the spent adsorbents are significant limits for the large-scale application of the developed adsorbent. In this study, wasted egg shells and oyster shells, rich in calcium (Ca), were employed to load Ca onto the surface of the activated sludge-based biochar. The results revealed that different forms of Ca on egg shell-modified activated sludge biochar (ESB) and oyster shell modified activated sludge biochar (OSB) induced different adsorption performances. ESB had a greater phosphate adsorption capacity than OSB, where the maximum adsorption capacities were 154.18 mg/g and 129.03 mg/g, respectively. The saturated biochar could slowly release phosphate at different levels of pH; in fact, the phosphate release efficiency of ESB exceeded that of OSB. Economic analysis suggested that the cost of phosphate removal by ESB was $1.13 per kg, and by OSB was $1.22 per kg. The phosphate adsorption using the Ca-loaded biochar revealed good prospects for sustainable development with the advantages of the high efficiency of phosphate removal, low cost and resourceful employment of wastes.

Application of Nano-Hydroxyapatite Derived from Oyster Shell in Fabricating Superhydrophobic Sponge for Efficient Oil/Water Separation

Chao Liu,Su-Hua Chen,Chi-Hao Yang-Zhou,Qiu-Gen Zhang,Ruby N. Michael

The exploration of nonhazardous nanoparticles to fabricate a template-driven superhydrophobic surface is of great ecological importance for oil/water separation in practice. In this work, nano-hydroxyapatite (nano-HAp) with good biocompatibility was easily developed from discarded oyster shells and well incorporated with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to create a superhydrophobic surface on a polyurethane (PU) sponge using a facile solution–immersion method. The obtained nano-HAp coated PU (nano-HAp/PU) sponge exhibited both excellent oil/water selectivity with water contact angles of over 150° and higher absorption capacity for various organic solvents and oils than the original PU sponge, which can be assigned to the nano-HAp coating surface with rough microstructures. Moreover, the superhydrophobic nano-HAp/PU sponge was found to be mechanically stable with no obvious decrease of oil recovery capacity from water in 10 cycles. This work presented that the oyster shell could be a promising alternative to superhydrophobic coatings, which was not only beneficial to oil-containing wastewater treatment, but also favorable for sustainable aquaculture.

Mechanochemical synthesis of calcium-biochar for decontamination of arsenic-containing acid mine drainage

Jingyi Gao,Mengdi Zhao,Zibo Xu,Kang Liu,Hua Zhong,Daniel C.W. Tsang

Ca-biochar is an efficient material for As(III)-containing acid mine drainage (AMD) decontamination, while it is challenging to fabricate Ca-biochar with oyster shell waste as the Ca source due to its complex structure. Herein, a mechanochemical method was proposed to activate oyster shell waste and wood waste for Ca-biochar design and production, and its efficacy and relevant mechanisms for AMD detoxification were evaluated. The smaller size Ca-biochar produced by the medium-speed ball milling showed a higher As(III) removal (74.0 %) compared to high-speed ball milling (60.9 %), attributed to the formation of finer Ca(OH) 2 while avoiding particle aggregation, which could release more Ca (89.0 mg/g) and alkalinity for the co-precipitation of As. Meanwhile, wood-based biochar substrate served as a platform for co-precipitation, and its surface functionality supported the oxidative immobilization of As. This study presents a promising route for upcycling food and wood waste to produce Ca-biochar for AMD decontamination.

Superhydrophobic foam prepared from high internal phase emulsion templates stabilised by oyster shell powder for oil–water separation

Chuan-ming Yu,Xiao-hui Zhuang,Sheng-wei Zeng,Qi-xing Dong,Zhan-xin Jing,Peng-zhi Hong,Yong Li

In this paper, poly(styrene-divinylbenzene) foams were synthesized using a high internal phase emulsion (HIPE) technique with Span 80 and with 900 °C calcined oyster shell powder as a co-emulsifier, 2,2′-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as an initiator and deionized water as the dispersing phase. SEM images revealed that the materials possess a hierarchical porous structure of nano/micro size, which resulted in saturated oil adsorption in only half a minute. The dispersing phase amount was investigated for its effect on adsorption. The optimized foams have 24.8–58.3 g g−1 adsorbencies for several organic solvents, and they demonstrated superhydrophobicity and excellent oleophilicity with the water contact angle (WCA) even close to 149° and oil contact angle approaching 0°. Moreover, the foams displayed high oil retention under pressure. The adsorption–centrifugation cycling results indicated high repeatability of the recovered foams. All of these features predicted the potential applications of superhydrophobic foams in oil–water separation.

Study on fire resistance and mechanical properties of modified recycled waste oyster powder in asphalt binder

Denghui Ren,Shilin Deng,Yanying L.V.,Cao Li,Qingzhao Yang,Fang Lai,Jing Li

In this study, an eco-friendly approach is presented for the innovative use of waste oyster shell (OS) powder modified with zinc stannate, aliphatic alcohols, and silane coupling agents blended with styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) modified asphalt to make a flame-retardant binder (modified oyster shell [MOS]/styrene-butadiene-styrene [SBS]/MA), which is rendered flame retardant and smoke suppressive. Compared with the original SBS/MA, MOS/SBS/MA with a 2% addition rate showed a 35.44% increase in ultimate oxygen index, a 30.62% reduction in peak exotherm, a 10.87% reduction in smoke density, and a 75% reduction in volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions. It also has excellent mechanical properties, with increases in composite modulus, elastic modulus, and storage modulus of 68.58%, 97.29%, and 59.59%, respectively, at 46°C. The thermal stability of MOS/SBS/MA is also improved, with a decomposition temperature 26°C higher than that of SBS/MA. Pavement performance tests show that the water-soaked Marshall's split strength has increased by 3.87% and the coefficient of rutting by 3.51%. Increased by 3.51%, this method effectively utilizes the waste OS, improves the fire-retardant properties of asphalt while retaining the mechanical properties of the modified asphalt binder, and provides a model for developing sustainable fire-retardant asphalt in coastal areas.

Effects of humic acid modified oyster shell addition on lignocellulose degradation and nitrogen transformation during digestate composting

Mingyi Lu,Xiaoshuang Shi,Quan Feng,Xu Li,Shujuan Lian,Mengdan Zhang,Rongbo Guo

The aim of this work was to investigate the performance of a novel humic acid modified oyster shell (MOS) bulking agent on the digestate composting. MOS was prepared by immobilizing humic acid onto oyster shell using solid phase grafting method, and then applied to the composting process. Results showed more obvious degradation of lignocellulose was observed in the MOS treatment, which was probably due to the high relative abundance of Actinobacteria . Moreover, the addition of MOS could significantly preserve NH 4 + and reduce the NO 3 − generation with the decreasing abundance of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria and archaea. Besides, adding MOS reduced the N 2 O emission by 59.63% compared with the control. After composting, excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectra demonstrated that the humification degree as well as compost maturity was enhanced with MOS added.

Enhancing ozonation using Meretrix lusoria shell waste biomass: sustainable decontamination of azo dye wastewater via decolorization, mineralization, and detoxification

Jung Sung-Hyo,Hong Sung-Hak,Lee Youn-Jun,Park Seong-Jik,Jho Eun Hea,Lee Chang-Gu

Azo is a synthetic organic dye that has attracted considerable attention because of its recalcitrance to degradation and toxicity. An upgraded ozonation process must be developed that integrates decolorization, mineralization, and toxicity reduction to manage the residual azo dye in the effluent from the dyeing industry and reduce its associated aquatic environmental risks. In this study, an ozonation system using Meretrix lusoria (ML) shell-waste-derived biomass (ML800) that uses simple calcination was developed. The ML800/O 3 system almost completely decolorized ( > 99.0%) and highly mineralized (53.6 ± 1.7%) Congo red (CR) during (CR = 100 mg∙L –1 , ML800 = 0.5 g ∙ L –1 ), surpassing the performance of the other tested systems (single ozonation and single ML800). Moreover, the ML800/O 3 system reduced the acute toxicity of CR to the bacterium Aliivibrio fischeri , whereas single ozonation showed temporarily increased the toxicity of CR. The FE-SEM/EDS, FTIR, and XRD analyses verified that Ca(OH) 2 was the main calcium species in ML800, which catalyzed the decomposition of O 3 into highly reactive •OH. The system was successfully applied to various azo dyes and was robust with water matrix constituents. These findings highlight the potential of marine shell waste for use as a sustainable and ecofriendly additive for ozonation, increasing azo dye removal from wastewater in practical applications.

Fabrication and properties of biodegradable poly (butylene succinate) composites by regulating the dispersed oyster shell powder with the silane coupling agent

Shen Yunda,Ren Liang,Ma Hui,Liu Xiangpeng,Song Tao,Liu Qiang,Xue Mingxin,Li Chonghua,Shao Mingliang,Zhang Mingyao

This work aims to evaluate the influence of the incorporation of oyster shell powder (OSP) on the mechanical properties, thermal performance and crystallization behavior of green poly (butylene succinate) (PBS) composites by regulating the dispersed oyster shell power with the silane coupling agent. In the present study, fully biodegradable PBS composites have been successfully prepared by virtue of the melt blending with γ-Glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (KH560) grafted oyster shell power namely OSP@KH560, enhancing the mechanical properties and thermal performance of the result materials. The incorporation of 20wt% OSP@KH560 into the composite promotes a dramatic increase of 48.1% in modulus of PBS composite. The result from thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) shows that thermal stabilities of PBS composites gradually increases with increasing the amount of OSP@KH560. By adding 30wt% OSP@KH560, the initial decomposition temperature of the PBS composite increases by 15℃. The DSC result demonstrates that the addition of OSP@KH560 at 30% leads to a crystallinity of 45.78% in the composites, which is 35.65% lower than that of PBS, indicating that OSP@KH560 promotes heterogeneous nucleation and accelerates the crystallization rate of PBS, thus reducing its crystallinity. This work provides a new option to prepare PBS composites with good performance and high-cost competitiveness, and further utilizes marine resources while breaking away from dependence on oil resources.

Fe0/C-bentonite alginate beads and oyster shell fixed-bed column combined process to continuously remove N-acetyl-p-aminophenol in persulfate system

Bing-huang Wang,Qian Zhang,Jun-ming Hong

In this study, the ion-gelation method was applied to fabricate novel Fe–carbon–bentonite–alginate beads (Fe 0 /C-BABs). Fe 0 /C-BABs could effectively control Fe release during persulfate (PS) activation in N -acetyl- p -aminophenol (APAP) oxidation. A novel two-stage approach that combined Fe 0 /C-BABs and an oyster-shell-filled bed (OSFB) column was developed to address the low pH and high Fe concentration of the effluent of the traditional PS process. The application of the Fe 0 /C-BABs and OSFB column regulated pH levels and Fe release during the advanced oxidation of APAP. The characteristics of Fe 0 /C-BABs were also investigated through scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectrometry, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The long-term operation performance of Fe 0 /C-BABs in a continuous fixed-bed reactor under simultaneous PS and APAP feeding was also evaluated. The effects of initial PS concentration, pH, fixed-bed weight, in-flow rate, and dissolved oxygen (DO) were investigated. Under selected conditions, 86.3% efficiency was achieved during the first stage of APAP degradation (effluent pH of 3.05, Fe contents: 106.25   mg   L −1 ). Water quality improved after the effluent was passed through the OSFB column (effluent pH of 6.32, Fe contents: 21.43   mg   L −1 ). Moreover, this study analyzed the free radicals and intermediates produced during APAP degradation to identify the possible routes of APAP degradation.

Accelerated adsorption of tetracyclines and microbes with FeOn(OH)m modified oyster shell: Its application on biotransformation of oxytetracycline in anaerobic enrichment culture

Shujuan Lian,Xiaoshuang Shi,Mingyi Lu,Mengdan Zhang,Xiaohuan Dong,Xu Li,Quan Feng,Rongbo Guo

Due to the persistence in residue and the emission to environment, antibiotics have become the emerging contaminants. Tetracyclines, as the largest amount of antibiotics in the breeding industry, were investigated in this study. For eliminating the tetracyclines, anaerobic culture was enriched from livestock waste after four generations and FeOn(OH)m modified oyster shell powders (OSPs) were amended into the enrichment culture as auxiliary method. Tetracycline and oxytetracycline were selected as the model compounds. The adsorption models (Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms) of tetracycline and microbes on OSPs were simulated respectively. With the addition of FeOn(OH)m modified OSPs, the transformation efficiency of oxytetracycline achieved 81.5% after 22 days’ incubation, approximately 1.85 times higher than the 4th generation (G-IV) enrichment culture without modified OSPs. Dehydration, demethylation, dehydroxylation and decarboxylation took place under anaerobic condition, inferred from the detected metabolites transformed from oxytetracycline. Genus Methanosarcina and two operational taxonomic units (OTUs) assigned to order Clostridiales , showed an increasing trend on abundance, indicating the contribution to transformation of oxytetracycline. Therefore, the FeOn(OH)m modified OSPs and enrichment culture can accelerate the transformation of oxytetracycline simultaneously, indicating a promising utilization not only for waste water system but also for antibiotic contaminated biomass treatment.
