Nanofiltration (NF) membranes are important for the resource of the wastewater from the coal chemical industry, brackish water and seawater desalination , and other purification applications to overcome the shortage of fresh water. However, ordinary NF membranes are easily oxidized by the residual chlorine in the influent. Here, we report a phase transition of lysozyme nanofilm for tuning the nanopore and surface charge of commercial NF membranes by a one-step dip-coating method using a buffer solution mixed with lysozyme. The pore size and selectivity of the membrane can be tailored through the coating time. The nanofilm can protect the membrane as a sacrifice layer from the corrosion of sodium hypochlorite solution . X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results confirmed that the nanofilm disappeared after being oxidized by 1000 ppm NaClO for 30 h. Nanofilm can effectively keep the rejection rate of Na 2 SO 4 at ~96 %. Our work proves the potential use of nanofilm as a good post-treatment for regulating membrane pore structure and surface charge. The construction of the sacrificial layer, which has also been proven to be universal for other types of membranes, provides a new idea for the NF membrane to resist sodium hypochlorite oxidation .

Membrane distillation technology, utilized for treating hypersaline wastewater from seawater desalination, often encounters challenges related to inorganic scaling, adversely affecting membrane performance. Herein, we introduce a innovative approach employing a sacrificial layer on the surface of Thin Film Composite (TFC) membranes to concurrently enhance inorganic scaling resistance and facilitate membrane reusability. The sacrificial layer (Fe 3+ -TA) consisted of tannic acid (TA) complexed with iron ions (Fe 3+ ) and could be removed and regenerated in situ. The results demonstrated that the Fe 3+ -TA layer significantly improved the membrane's surface smoothness and densification, maintaining superior anti-scaling performance. The modified membrane exhibited remarkable durability, sustaining six reuse cycles with a flux recovery exceeding 97 % in gypsum scaling tests. Furthermore, the formation of new complexes during gypsum scaling tests confirmed the membrane's augmented scaling retardation capabilities. Thus, integrating of a sacrificial layer into TFC membranes presents a promising strategy for advancing membrane distillation processes in hypersaline wastewater treatment.

Single-crystal silicon carbide has excellent electrical, mechanical, and chemical properties. However, due to its high hardness material properties, achieving high-precision manufacturing of single-crystal silicon carbide with an ultra-smooth surface is difficult. In this work, quantum dots were introduced as a sacrificial layer in polishing for pulsed-ion-beam sputtering of single-crystal SiC. The surface of single-crystal silicon carbide with a quantum-dot sacrificial layer was sputtered using a pulsed-ion beam and compared with the surface of single-crystal silicon carbide sputtered directly. The surface roughness evolution of single-crystal silicon carbide etched using a pulsed ion beam was studied, and the mechanism of sacrificial layer sputtering was analyzed theoretically. The results show that direct sputtering of single-crystal silicon carbide will deteriorate the surface quality. On the contrary, the surface roughness of single-crystal silicon carbide with a quantum-dot sacrificial layer added using pulsed-ion-beam sputtering was effectively suppressed, the surface shape accuracy of the Ø120 mm sample was converged to 7.63 nm RMS, and the roughness was reduced to 0.21 nm RMS. Therefore, the single-crystal silicon carbide with the quantum-dot sacrificial layer added via pulsed-ion-beam sputtering can effectively reduce the micro-morphology roughness phenomenon caused by ion-beam sputtering, and it is expected to realize the manufacture of a high-precision ultra-smooth surface of single-crystal silicon carbide.

An over-thick MoSe2 layer and numerous voids at the absorbing layer inside and backside lead to a relatively low Jsc and PCE of CZTSSe solar cells. In previous studies, MoO2 and MoO3 sacrificial layers have been commonly used to eliminate those voids and reduce the thickness of MoSe2 layers. However, there is still no clarity about which one is more effective. In this work, we prepared MoO2 and MoO3 sacrificial layers on the surface of Mo-coated SLG substrates by air annealing and ammonia (NH3·H2O) etching, respectively. J–V testing shows that both MoO2 and MoO3 can effectively improve the Jsc and PCE of CZTSSe solar cells, wherein MoO3 is more effective. Comparative analysis shows that the electrical mechanism of Jsc and PCE improvement lies in the significant reduction of device series resistance (Rs). SEM images and XRD pattern results indicate that the reason for Rs decreasing is void elimination and MoSe2 layer thickness reduction from 600 nm to 270 nm after applying MoO3. With the aid of the MoO3 sacrificial layer, the PCE of the CZTSSe device increases from 7.51% to 9.58% (total area 0.21 cm2) without the MgF2 anti-reflection layer.

Strain engineering has emerged as a powerful strategy for optimizing the material structure and enhancing performance across a wide range of applications. Herein, we report the deployment of substrate-imposed strain to govern the dissolution kinetics of an epitaxial sacrificial layer. The epitaxial LaCoO3 (LCO) has been employed as a sacrificial layer: a lattice-matched and environmentally benign perovskite for releasing freestanding oxide membranes. Intriguingly, the decomposition efficiency of LCO can be precisely controlled by the substrate strain, whether tensile or compressive, which can induce changes in chemical bonds and lattice distortion, thereby altering the reactivity of LCO with the decomposition solution. Under a tensile strain of 2.09% on SrTiO3 substrate, the decomposition efficiency of LCO was accelerated by 66.7% compared with that on LaAlO3 substrate with compressive strain. Synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy, high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy and semi-in situ optical absorption spectra reveal that tensile strain reduces La–O bond energy and enhances octahedral distortion, making the lattice more susceptible to collapse. Furthermore, freestanding PbZrO3 films were fabricated using the LCO sacrificial layer, showing a ferroelectric-to-antiferroelectric transition. These findings underscore the potential of strain engineering in controlling material properties and fabrication processes, offering new strategies for developing flexible electronic devices.

To overcome the limited permeance of conventional γ-Al 2 O 3 nanofiltration (NF) membranes caused by sol penetration into porous supports and poor interfacial defect control, a single-calcination fabrication strategy incorporating a PVA sacrificial interlayer was developed in this study. This approach enabled simultaneous structural optimization and performance enhancement, while also simplifying the overall fabrication process. At a PVA concentration of 3 wt% and a pre-filling time of 2 min, the average pore size of the γ-Al 2 O 3 separation layer increased from 2.04 to 2.39 nm, and the pure-water permeance improved from 8.22 to 17.68 L m −2 h −1 ·bar −1 . This enhancement is attributed to the PVA pre-filling, which effectively suppressed the infiltration of AlOOH sol into the large pores of the support and generated open micro-pores upon calcination, thereby forming a more uniform and better-connected pore structure and consequently reducing mass-transfer resistance, which contributed to a synergistic “shielding-pore-forming” effect. Owing to the optimized pore architecture and stabilized interfacial charge, the γ-Al 2 O 3 membrane exhibited high rejection of MgCl 2 (91.62 %) and CaCl 2 (86.86 %), while maintaining relatively high permeace toward NaCl and Na 2 SO 4 . This separation behavior is governed by the combined effects of size sieving and the Donnan exclusion. Long-term operation and NaClO-cleaning tests further verified that the membrane retained its structural integrity and stable separation performance. This green and facile fabrication strategy offers a practical route for the low-cost production of high-performance ceramic NF membranes and shows considerable promise for engineering-scale applications.

High separation efficiency and satisfactory economic benefits are of great importance for ceramic membranes in the field of water treatment. Herein, microfiltration ceramic membrane with high permeability and selectivity was prepared in one-step (dip-coating and sintering) by sacrificial-interlayer method. The membrane-forming mechanism, effect of temperature on the morphology and pore structure, separation performance, fouling mechanism, and regeneration performance of the ceramic membranes were systematically investigated. The results show that membrane-forming mechanism of the membranes largely depends on film-coating filtration. The membrane with a mixture of nanocellulose crystals and graphene oxide as sacrificial interlayer (C1G1) and sintered at 1100–1300 ℃ possessed smooth surface. The open porosity and average pore size increased, and the pore size distribution became broader as the temperature increased. Moreover, the sacrificial-interlayer membrane sintered at 1300 ℃ ( m A4S -C1G1 ) possessed suitable porosity (53.4 %) and average pore size (200 nm), high permeance (4828 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 ), which was larger than that of the membrane without sacrificial interlayer, manifesting that C1G1 could prevent the penetration of membrane-forming particles into support. The final fouling mechanism of m A4S -C1G1 was cake filtration, although complete pore blocking, standard pore blocking, intermediate pore blocking also involved in the initial stage. In addition, the oil rejection rate (∼97 %) and steady-state feed flux (810–1154 L·m −2 ·h −1 ) of m A4S -C1G1 was high, and it also possessed good regeneration performance.
