A well-defined quadruple hydrogen bonding strategy involving dimerization of 2-ureido-4[1 H ]-pyrimidone (UPy) units is innovatively designed to prepare polyureas with high overall mechanical properties. Three polyureas containing different amounts of UPy units were synthesized by replacing a portion of isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) with a UPy-derived diisocyanate. The formation of quadruple hydrogen bonds in hard segments via UPy dimers was confirmed by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The mechanical properties of the polyureas were evaluated by uniaxial tensile testing. Compared to the polyurea without UPy units, remarkable improvements in Young’s modulus, tensile strength, and toughness were simultaneously achieved when UPy units were incorporated. The mechanism behind the strong strengthening effect rooted in the stronger intermolecular forces among hard segments brought by the quadruple hydrogen bonds, which were stronger than the inherent bidentate and monodentate hydrogen bonds among urea groups, and the slower soft segmental dynamics reaveled by both increased T g and relaxation time of the soft segments. The mechanism behind the strong toughening effect was ascribed to more effective energy dissipation brought by the quadruple hydrogen bonds that served as stronger sacrificial bonds upon deformation. This work may offer new insight into the design of polyurea elastomers with comprehensively improved mechanical properties.

The development of plant oil-based modifiers that significantly improve the toughness of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) while exerting minimal adverse effects on their strength and modulus poses a critical challenge. Biological materials such as nacre , bones , spider silk, and tendons are characterized by the presence of sacrificial bonds, which contribute significantly to their exceptional strength and remarkable toughness. In this study, a tung oil-based epoxy terminated polyurethane (TETPU) was synthesized, drawing inspiration from biological materials. The significant enhancement in toughness was achieved while preserving exceptional mechanical strength by integrating sacrificial bonds through the formation of hydrogen bonds and π-π interactions within the epoxy resin network. The incorporation of 30 wt% TETPU resulted in a 111.7% increase in elongation at break, a 40.29% increase in toughness, and a 90.59% increase in impact strength compared to the neat DGEBA. Additionally, the tensile and flexural strength underwent a decrease of 16.36% and 18.80%, respectively. The exceptional performance can be attributed to the formation of multiple sacrificial bonds between TETPU and epoxy network. The study presents a direct and effective approach for producing plant oil-based epoxy modifiers, resulting in a substantial enhancement in toughness with minimal effects on strength and modulus.

Epoxy resins, previously toughened using plant oil derivatives, continue to face the challenge of balancing strength with flexibility due to their extensive fatty acid chains. This research introduces a novel approach, utilizing principles observed in nature, such as sacrificial bonds found in spider silk, bones, and nacre, which confer superior strength and resilience. By incorporating sacrificial π-π interactions into the epoxy resin matrix, using modified tung-oil based additives with reduced fatty segments and an enhanced concentration of functional groups, simultaneous enhancement in toughness and strength is achieved. The newly synthesized tung-oil derivative, tung oil-based glycerol monoester dibutyric acid (TOGDA), retains the conjugated trienes of original tung oil, derived from eleostearic acid. Incorporating merely 5 wt% of TOGDA resulted in notable improvements, with increases of 13.0 % in tensile strength and 196.7 % in impact strength relative to pure epoxy resin. The integration of TOGDA via covalent bonds into the curing network significantly augments its compatibility with the epoxy framework. The inclusion of a minor fraction of TOGDA minimally impacts the dynamic thermal mechanical characteristics and the thermal stability of the enhanced resin. This development is crucial for improving the overall performance of brittle thermoset resins by incorporating modifiers derived from plant oils.

Here, zinc-neutralized ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) ionomers with different neutralization levels are prepared through melt blending, and are then incorporated with polyamide 1012 (PA1012) to fabricate PA1012/EPDM ionomer blends. Interestingly, complex crosslinking networks are formed in the blends due to the construction of sacrificial bonds (Zn 2+ -carboxyl, Zn 2+ -amide). The as-formed network structure and sacrificial bond endow the PA/EPDM blends with largely enhanced toughness (16 times higher than that of neat PA), as well as balanced strength and stiffness. Meanwhile, the rheological behaviors of PA1012/EPDM ionomer blends indicate their relative low melting viscosity, which can avoid the processing shortcomings of plastics toughened with rubber. Moreover, PA1012/EPDM ionomer blends show obvious gelation behavior, and a maximum notched Izod impact strength exhibited at the gel point, in which unique double network structure can be observed obviously, indicating that there is a corresponding correlation between the rheological and mechanical parameters. Furthermore, the supper-toughening mechanism of PA1012/EPDM ionomer blends at gel point is explored, which origins from the large deformation and cavitation of rubber particles and the destruction of special double network morphologies. This study provides a novel and effective strategy to fabricate PA materials with outstanding toughness and excellent strength simultaneously.

The combination of high strength , great toughness, and excellent electrical properties for conductive polymer composites is essential for their practical applications. Herein, we demonstrate a strategy to improve simultaneously the strength, toughness, and the electrical conductivity of epoxy resin. This strategy involves constructing compact 3D tannin non-covalent modified graphene/multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) hybrid network and introducing sacrificial bonds. As a result, with only 0.01 wt% the hybrid filler, the tensile strength , Young's modulus , elongation at break, the mode-I fracture toughness ( K IC ), and strain energy release rates ( G IC ) of the epoxy resin were increased by 23.3%, 44.6%, 41.2%, 114.6%, and 219.3%, respectively. This filler loading is 10 and 15 times lower to obtain comparable improvement in tensile strength and K IC compared with the lowest content reported to date. The composites also display excellent electrical properties in terms of an ultralow percolation threshold (~0.076 wt%).

Functionalization and reinforcement of polymers by introducing dynamic sacrificial bonds have attracted increasing attention. In this contribution, the in situ modification of isoprene rubber by the formation of sacrificial bonds during vulcanization has been investigated. The sacrificial bonds were formed by in situ introduction of hydrogen bonds and metal–ligand motifs, which became part of the vulcanized isoprene rubber network by reaction of the former with the vulcanizing agent. The introduction of three-component modifiers (nadic anhydride (NA), 2-aminopyrimidine (AP), and ZnCl2) and the molar ratio of these components can greatly affect the tensile strength and modulus of the vulcanized rubber. Under the external load, the sacrificial bonds preferentially rupture prior to the covalent network and facilitate rubber chain orientation, resulting in high fracture energy. In addition, the dynamic behavior of the sacrificial bonds and the hysteresis behavior of the vulcanized rubbers were studied.

Due to the improvement of strength and toughness at the same time, construction of reversible sacrificial bond network has attracted extensive attention to realize the high performance and functionalization of rubber materials. However, the research on the viscoelastic behavior of vulcanized rubber with reversible sacrificial bond network lags behind seriously. In this work relaxation kinetics, linear rheological behavior and nonlinear rheological behavior of hybrid crosslinked butadiene-styrene-vinylpyridine rubber (VPR) with reversible Zn 2+ -pyridine coordination bond were investigated in detail. It was found that, the tensile results under small strain were more conducive to reflect the contribution of sacrificial bond after sequential tensile-recovery process than those under large strain. Although sacrificial bond could affect both G' and G" at low temperature, the contribution of it to G" was more prominent. When the temperature was higher than the dissociation temperature of Zn 2+ -pyridine coordination bond, the sacrificial bond could only affect G" , which was due to the fact that the pyridine group was equivalent to the graft on VPR backbone and acted as dangling chain. In addition, the destruction and reconstruction of coordination bond was the dominant factor in modulus recovery. Graphical

In order to simulate the effect of non-rubber components on strain-induced crystallization (SIC) in natural rubber (NR), sacrificial metal-ligand bonds are incorporated, for the first time, into cis -1,4 polyisoprene cured by sulfur. The incorporation of sacrificial bonds is found to bring in much smaller onset strain for SIC and higher crystallinity compared with the cis -1,4 polyisoprene with sulfide crosslinks only. Accordingly, the striking improvements in tensile modulus and fracture toughness are achieved. The present work contributes to significant insights for mimicking NR outstanding properties in synthesized cis -1,4 polyisoprene and affords new technological route in improving the mechanical properties of synthesized polyisoprene alternative to the nanofilling.

The demand for composites with long anti-fatigue lifetimes and stable performance in extreme environments has created requirements for both high strength and toughness when it comes to epoxy matrices. However, for thermosets, promoting maximum elongation and extensibility without sacrificing mechanical strength remains challenging. Herein, via introducing hydrogen bonds and flexible segments into the crosslinked network simultaneously, a shape-memory epoxy resin with good mechanical properties was prepared. The long flexible chains provide the network with good mobility and toughness, while the existence of reversible hydrogen bonds leads to a cooperative effect in terms of both increased cross-linking density and anchor points for chain-restriction. Benefiting from the rigid–flexible integrated structure in this system, the typical resin exhibits high tensile strength (73.66 MPa) with large elongation at break (9.42%). In addition, this epoxy network also shows good thermally induced shape-memory effects. Therefore, as all aspects of its superior performance are mainly based on the presence of sacrificial bonds in the network, a similar strategy can be used to toughen rigid polymers, and using this approach can allow a favorable combination of high strength and extensibility to be realized.

Low-surface-energy (LSE) materials, such as polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), are extensively used in advanced technologies like 5G chip production and base station filters, due to their hydrophobicity, chemical resistance, low friction, and excellent dielectric properties. However, their inherent chemical inertness and nonwetting nature pose significant challenges to achieving strong adhesion. In this work, we present a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) tape composed of fluorinated monomers and hydrophobic ionic liquids, synthesized through a one-step, scalable process. This adhesive demonstrates an impressive bond strength of 1700 N/m on PTFE, significantly outperforming existing adhesives for LSE substrates. The enhancement arises from the strategic incorporation of ion-dipole interactions between the polar –CF3 groups in the fluorinated monomers and the ionic liquid cations, which create sacrificial bonds to improve cohesion and energy dissipation. Remarkably, this adhesive requires no surface pretreatment, maintains high transparency, and demonstrates stable adhesion even under high humidity. This work addresses a critical gap in adhesion technology for LSE materials, offering a scalable and versatile solution with diverse applications in advanced electronics, aerospace, and other industries demanding high-performance adhesives.

The development of the effective 3D printing strategy for diverse functional monomers is still challenging. Moreover, the conventional 3D printing hydrogels are usually soft and fragile due to the lack of an energy dissipation mechanism. Herein, a microsphere mediating ink preparation strategy is developed to provide tailored rheological behavior for various monomer direct ink writings. The chitosan microspheres are used as an exemplary material due to their tunable swelling ratio under the acid-drived electrostatic repulsion of the protonated amino groups. The rheological behaviors of the swollen chitosan microsphere (SCM) are independent on the monomer types, and various functional secondary polymers could be carried at a wide loading ratio by the acid driving. The SCM reinforces the hydrogel as the sacrificial bonds. With the adjustable composition, the 3D printing hydrogel mechanical properties are tunable in wide windows: strength (0.4–1.01 MPa), dissipated energy (0.11–3.25 MJ m–3), and elongation at break (47–626%). With the excellent printing and mechanical properties, the SCM inks enable multi-functional integration for soft device production, such as 4D printing robots and wearable strain sensors. We anticipate that this microsphere mediating 3D printing strategy can inspire new possibilities for the design of the robust hydrogels with a broad range of functionalities and mechanical performances.
