Biochar doped with heteroatom-like nitrogen could significantly improve its performance in several environmental applications. However, the preparation requires an additional nitrogen source, which influences its cost-effectiveness and impedes the practical applications. In the present study, the nitrogen self-doped biochar was prepared by using Foxtail algae ( Myriophyllum aquaticum ), which is a typical N-rich wetland plant as the raw material, without any modifications. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray electron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to characterize the morphology and crystal structure of the material. The biochar prepared at 800 °C (MBC800) was found to have a better porous structure, large specific area (1069.08 m 2 g −1 ), and more elemental N (3.11%). Furthermore, the MBC800 was used in the persulfate-activated degradation of Acid Orange 7 (AO7; 400 mgL −1 ), and about 97.42% of the removal rate was observed within 60 min when the MBC800 and PS dosages (MBC800/PS) were at 0.25 gL −1 and 4 gL −1 respectively. The radical trapping results indicated that amongst the free radicals (–OH•, SO 4 •–, O 2 •–) and non-radicals ( 1 O 2 ), the surface-bound hydroxyl radical (–OH•) of biochar played an important role, and the non-radical singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) played a dominant role during the AO7degradation. The study namely provides a new way for the exploitation and utilization of Foxtail algae in preparing nitrogen-doped biochar for several environmental remediation applications.

Sparganium stoloniferum is a widely distributed aquatic medicinal plant that exhibits exceptional tolerance to environmental stress. Interestingly, the phenols in S. stoloniferum which have medicinal properties, are defensive compounds. Studies integrating transcriptome, proteome, and metabolome analyses have highlighted the phenylpropanoid and flavonoid biosynthesis pathways, which are related to the defense mechanisms of S. stoloniferum . During the growth process, S. stoloniferum rhizoma (SL) accumulates lignin, forming a physical defense, and phenylpropanoids and flavonoids derived during the lignin biosynthesis process provide chemical defense. In this study, a map of the molecular processes involved in the coordinated defense of S. stoloniferum was generated. The expression patterns of genes involved in the coordinated defense of SL were consistent with the omics results. The cDNA of the phenylalanine ammonia-lyase ( PAL ) gene from S. stoloniferum ( Ss PAL) was cloned. The recombinant protein Ss PAL showed good affinity and catalytic activity for L-phenylalanine. Heat stress experiments indicated that genes related to phenol biosynthesis were upregulated when S. stoloniferum responded to stress. Therefore, phenols played a crucial defense role when S. stoloniferum was at an early developmental stage or responded to stress in a short time. In contrast, the physical defense mainly relied on lignin formation, which was the main defense mechanism of SL in the late growth stage. Based on these results, we discuss the causes of phenolic pharmacological substance formation in medicinal aquatic plants. These results provide new insights into the defense strategies of aquatic plants.

Disinfection by-products (DBPs) such as chloroacetic acids (CAAs) and N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) are prevalent pollutants in surface waters, particularly with the increasing use of chlorine-based disinfectants. The entry of these DBPs into water bodies may increase accordingly, posing ecological risks to aquatic life. To assess the toxic effects of CAAs and NDMA on submerged macrophytes,Vallisneria natanswas exposed to different concentrations of CAAs (1.0, 10.0, and 100.0 μg L−1) and NDMA (0.1, 1.0, and 10.0 μg L−1). A RI value of <1 indicates that simultaneous exposure to CAAs and NDMA can produce an antagonistic effect. Both CAAs and NDMA adversely affect the photosynthetic system of plants. In the NDMA treatment group, chlorophyll a content decreases with increasing concentration, accounting for 96.03%, 60.80%, and 58.67% of the CT group, respectively. Additionally, it effectively triggers the plant’s antioxidant response, with significant increases in SOD, POD, and GSH levels. Among these, the combined treatment group AN2 (10 + 1 μg L−1) showed the most significant change in SOD activity, reaching 3.57 times that of the CT group. Ultrastructural changes also revealed stress responses in leaf cells and damage to organelles. Furthermore, metabolomics provided insights into the metabolic responses induced by CAAs or NDMA inV. natansleaves, where the composition and metabolism of lipids, fatty acids, cofactors and vitamins, amino acids, nucleotides, and some antioxidants were regulated, affecting plant growth. This study provides preliminary information for the ecological risk assessment of submerged plants by complex contamination with the disinfection by-products CAA and NDMA.
