Concentrated pig production is a major source of environmental pollution. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) show potential for reducing heavy metal pollution. Two zirconium-based octahedral MOFs, UiO-66 and UiO-66-NH 2 , were prepared by solvothermal method and were characterized by XRD, SEM, FT-IR, and BET. The adsorption capacity, treatability, and reusability of the adsorbents were tested in batch experiments. The optimum adsorbent dosage was 4 g/L, and the maximum removal rates at room temperature of chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), nickel (Ni), and Arsenic (As) on UiO-66 were 76.93%, 93.73%, 88.81%, 83.30%, and 86.11%, respectively. In the kinetic experiments, the adsorption process achieved equilibrium within 90 min and generally conformed to the quasi-second kinetics model. The results demonstrated that UiO-66 and UiO-66-NH 2 can be used over a wide range of pH for removal of most HMs on a large scale. Meanwhile, the adsorbents maintained excellent adsorption capacity after at least 3 cycles. Overall, UiO-66 and UiO-66-NH 2 have a high potential for practical application on the recovery of heavy metals in the complex wastewater from animal farms.

Piggery wastewater sludge is rich in organic matter but contains pollutants that are harmful to the environment and ecology, such as heavy metals . In this paper, a novel process for hazard-free treatment and resource utilization of piggery wastewater sludge was proposed. Technique combining Fe(II) coagulation, hydrothermal reaction and pyrolysis (CHP) was used to stabilize heavy metals (HMs) in sludge, and the adsorption performance of the recycled product to tylosin (TYL) was studied. SV30 (Sludge Volume 30 min) of sludge decreased from 97% to 30% after Fe(II) coagulation and water content of sludge decreased from 97% to 30% after hydrothermal treatment. After CHP treatment, the residue fraction of Cd, Pb, Cu, Zn, Cr and Ni increased by 12.1%, 67.3%, 12.4%, 15.4%, 58.5%, 2.8% respectively. With raising Fe 2+ dosage, residual state of each heavy metal increases. Sludge biochar (SBC) generated after CHP process is a kind of mesoporous composite composed of goethite , quartz, biochar and polymer, and showed a high adsorption capacity for tylosin, and the process of which can be well expressed by Langmuir adsorption isotherm ( R 2 = 0.947). The maximum theoretical adsorption capacity of SBC for TYL can be obtained by pyrolysis at 600 °C, which can reach 58 mg g −1 .

Ciprofloxacin (CIP), a veterinary antibiotic in swine wastewater is an emerging contaminant with low concentration but significant environmental risk. Its inhibitory effects on biological treatment systems and the proliferation of antibiotic resistance genes have raised widespread public concern. An expanded granular sludge bed reactor was coupled with an anaerobic membrane bioreactor (EGSB-AnMBR) to treat swine wastewater containing CIP. During 320 days operation, the EGSB-AnMBR system achieved over 98.6 % chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency and 61.4 %–100 % CIP removal efficiency. During the initial operation phase, sludge adsorption served as the primary mechanism for CIP removal, whereas biodegradation became dominant in the last operational phase. 16S rRNA gene high-throughput sequencing analysis revealed that under CIP stress, the abundance of CIP-resistant Spirochaetota increased from 4.7 % to 9.5 %, whereas Patescibacteria abundance progressively decreased from 72.7 % to 15.7 %. Metagenomic analysis demonstrated microbes in anaerobic granular sludge (AnGS) achieved “defense-efflux” by activating macB / evgS efflux pumps while suppressing tetA , whereas membrane biofilm (MB) developed a “storage-retention” strategy through synergistic effects of tetA and evgS . This EGSB-AnMBR system exhibits promising application potential for swine wastewater treatment and antibiotic control, providing significant support for livestock pollution management.

This work investigated the cultivation of Chlorella vulgaris in a thin-film flat plate photobioreactor under outdoor conditions and using digested piggery wastewater as the culture medium. The algal cells were able to adapt quickly to the wastewater and outdoor conditions. A specific growth rate of 0.12 day −1 was obtained in the exponential growth phase, which was slightly higher than that during indoor cultivation using artificial culture medium. Results showed that Chlorella vulgaris effectively removed TN, TP, and COD by 72.48%, 86.93%, and 85.94%. Due to the difference in culture conditions and phosphorus availability, the biomass from outdoor cultivation contained higher lipid content and more unsaturated fatty acids compared to indoor cultures, while the amino acid composition was unaffected. Results of metallic element assay indicated that the biomass cultured with wastewater conformed to the standards required for animal feed additive production. The overall cost of the biomass production in the thin-film flat plate photobioreactor (32.94 US$/kg) was estimated to be 4.67 times lower than that of indoor cultivation (154.04 US$/kg). Together, these results provide a basis for large-scale outdoor production of microalgae and wastewater bioremediation.
