Ordered nitrogen-doped mesoporous carbon (NMC) was successfully synthesized with pig manure as the precursor. The resulting NMC materials exhibited excellent capacity of adsorption and potassium persulfate (PS) activation when used as catalysts for the oxidative degradation of tetracycline antibiotics (tetracycline hydrochloride (TH) as the target). For an initial TH concentration of 35 mg/L, the maximum adsorption capacity of NMC material prepared at 700 °C (NMC700) was 122.0 mg/g, and the degradation efficiency in the PS reaction system was 94.8% within 120 min. Investigation of the mechanism indicated that the NMC700 material with specific surface area (SSA) of 275.5 m 2 /g and 0.7% graphitic N content, provided a large amount of active sites for adsorption and catalytic oxidation of TH. Based on the results of selective degradation and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) experiments, a non-radical pathway for the degradation of pollutants was proposed. Chronoamperometry evaluation also supported the conclusion that the NMC material enhanced electron transfer to activate persulfate, accelerating the removal of TH.

High concentrations of residual arsanilic acid occur in pig manure due to its use in feed to promote growth and control diseases. This study compared the effects of arsanilic acid at three concentrations (0, 325, and 650 mg/kg dry pig manure) on the abundance of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and the microbial community during anaerobic digestion. Addition of 650 mg/kg arsanilic acid enhanced the absolute abundances of tetC , sul2 , ermB , and gyrA more than twofold in the digestion product. Redundancy analysis indicated that the change in the microbial community structure was the main driver of variation in the ARGs profile. The As resistance gene arsC co-occurred with four ARGs and intI1 , possibly causing the increase in ARGs under pressure by arsanilic acid. High arsanilic acid concentrations can increase the risk of ARGs occurring in anaerobic digestion products. The amount of arsanilic acid used as a feed additive should be controlled.

Co-hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) of livestock manure and biomass might improve the fuel properties of the hydrochar due to the high reactivity of the biomass-derived intermediates with the abundant oxygen-containing functionalities. However, the complicated compositions make it difficult to explicit the specific roles of the individual components of biomass played in the co-HTC process. In this study, cellulose was used for co-HTC with swine manure to investigate the influence on the properties of the hydrochar . The yield of hydrochar obtained from co-HTC reduced gradually with the cellulose proportion increased, and the solid yield was lower than the theoretical value. This was because the cellulose-derived intermediates favored the stability of the fragments from hydrolysis of swine manure. The increased temperature resulted in the reduction of the hydrochar yield whereas the prolonged time enhanced the formation of solid product. The interaction of the co-HTC intermediates facilitated the formation of O-containing species, thus making the solid more oxygen- and hydrogen-rich with a higher volatility. In addition, the co-HTC affected the evolution of functionalities like -OH and C O during the thermal treatment of the hydrochar and altered its morphology by stuffing the pores from swine manure-derived solid with the microspheres from HTC of cellulose. The interaction of the varied intermediates also impacted the formation of amines, ketones, carboxylic acids , esters, aromatics and the polymeric products in distinct ways.

The purpose of this study was to develop a carbon material with excellent adsorption performance of uranium, which could effectively reduce the risk of damage to the water environment caused by pig manure (PM) and uranium-containing wastewater. Three kinds of biochars (PMBC-300, PMBC-500, and PMBC-700) were successfully constructed with pig manure as the precursor at different carbonization temperature (300, 500, and 700 °C) for removing uranium from the solution. Meanwhile, various adsorption isotherm and kinetics models were applied to deeply discuss the adsorption performances and mechanism of pig manure-derived biochar for uranium. The results showed that the surface charge and active sites of PMBC were the important parameters to affect the removal of uranium. The adsorption capacity of PMBC-500 reached 376.5 mg/g (m/V = 0.1 g/L, pH = 4, and T = 298 K) due to the abundant active sites (phosphate, carbonate, and oxygen-containing groups), which was much higher than that of other reported carbon materials. Therefore, it could be considered that the conversion of PM into PMBC was a feasible method, which would effectively remove uranium from the solution and reduce the pollution of PM to the environment. Ammonia (NH3) emissions have become a serious environmental pollution problem, and livestock production is an important source of NH3emissions, especially pig farming. The origin of NH3release is the hydrolysis of urea in urine that is catalyzed by urease present in feces. This research determined the urease activity in fresh feces by Michaelis–Menten kinetics and then compared the process of urea hydrolysis and ammonia production in fresh slurry. For feces, the kinetic parametersVmaxandK’mwere calculated by determining the concentration of ammonium in initial 5 minutes in closed vessels, and the resultingVmaxandK’mwere 26.9 ± 1.2 mmol·[urea]·kg−1·min−1and 99.7 ± 3.5 mmol·[urea]·l−1, respectively. In fresh slurry, the rate of urea hydrolysis determined directly was higher than the ammonium formation rate in the early stage (0–8 h) and was accompanied by a rapid rise in pH. In addition, we further explored the effects of temperature, pH, and mixing rate on urease activity within different periods (0–5 min, 5 min–2 h and 2 h–8 h). Our observations show that the optimal urease activity occurred at 35 °C, pH 6.71, and 821.83 rpm of stirring, indicating that microbial species and communities associated with urease production are affected by environmental conditions.

Treatment of swine manure by hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) with the aid of different surfactants was first explored in this study. PEG 400 (polyethylene glycol 400) and Tween 80 facilitated the formation of bio-oil. SLS (sodium lignosulfonate) and SDS (sodium dodecyl sulfate) promoted the formation of water-soluble matters/gases. Span 80 enhanced the formation of hydrochar , which resulted in a 50.19 % mass yield, 92.39 % energy yield, and a caloric value of 28.68 MJ/kg. The hydrochar obtained with Span 80 presented a similar combustion performance to raw swine manure and the best pyrolysis performance. The use of Span 80 promoted the transfer of degradation products to hydrochar, especially hydrophobic ester and ketone compounds. Notedly, Span 80 suppressed the synthesis of PAHs during the HTC process, which was reduced to 0.92 mg/kg. Furthermore, the hydrochar produced with Span 80 contained lower contents of heavy metals. On the whole, Span 80 has shown great potential in enhancing the HTC of swine manure. The acting mechanisms of surfactants in the HTC of swine manure included adsorption, dispersion, and electrostatics repulsion.
