Combination of column adsorption and supercritical fluid extraction for recovery of dissolved essential oil from distillation waste water of Yulania liliiflora

Gaoming Lei,Peizhi Mao,Minqing He,Longhu Wang,Xuesong Liu,Anyun Zhang

BACKGROUND Aromatic waste water is the main by-product of industrial essential oil distillation. To recover the dissolved essential oil from this distillation waste water, an approach combining column adsorption (CA) and supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) was proposed. Yulania liliiflora was selected as a case study. Activated carbon of mixed porosity was employed and quantitative desorption of the adsorbed oil was achieved using supercritical carbon dioxide (SC–CO 2 ). RESULTS The optimized condition of CA-SFE was 18 MPa, 308 K, dynamic extraction for 60 min and CO 2 flow rate of 3.6 g min −1 . A recovery of 0.668 ± 0.050 g kg −1 ( n = 3) was achieved for the dissolved oil from distillation waste water, significantly higher ( P < 0.05) than that obtained by liquid–liquid extraction (LLE) (0.405 ± 0.032 g kg −1 , n = 3). Yulania liliiflora recovered oil was rich in eucalyptol (52.6–55.2%), α -terpineol (15.2–18.1%) and terpinen-4-ol (8.1–8.7%). CONCLUSION The CA-SFE approach is highly efficient and especially suitable for large-scale application. The recovered essential oil is valued for being rich in organoleptically important and biologically active compounds. © 2015 Society of Chemical Industry

Recovery of essential oils from the withered flowers of Magnolia soulangeana Soul.-Bod. by microwave-assisted hydrodistillation with uniform heating and its new application in the hypolipidemic field

Xiaojin Peng,Chunte Feng,Ang Jia,Jiake Gao,Renshuai Zhang

This study innovatively designed a microwave-assisted hydrodistillation method with uniform heating to extract the essential oil from the withered flowers of Magnolia soulangeana Soul.-Bod., in which the addition of the rotating unit is applied to improve the uneven heating of plant materials caused by the fixation of the flask and the energy point in the microwave system, and the soaking pretreatment unit is used to fully swell the plant cells and accelerate the overflow of essential oils. Meanwhile, the significance of the independent variables that may affect the yield of essential oil and the optimal conditions were screened and optimized by means of response surface methodology , and the results showed that the introduction of the rotation unit and soaking pretreatment unit increased the yield of essential oil by 16.67% and 20%, respectively, which highly promoted the increase of the yield and extraction rate of essential oil. Moreover, the samples obtained by this new method are rich in terpene compounds, such as eucalyptol , δ-cadinene, α-muurolene, and germacrene D, which is consistent with the results of traditional hydrodistillation, and also further illustrates the safety of this method. And the hypolipidemic activity of these compounds was also verified, and the main compound in the essential oil that exerts the hypolipidemic activity may be δ-cadinene, and its possible target for reducing total cholesterol content is Niemann-Pick C1-like 1. In addition, this study also shows that this new method shows lower energy consumption and environmental pressure and is very promising to replace the existing method for the large-scale preparation of essential oils.

LC-Q-TOF-MS Characterization of Polyphenols from White Bayberry Fruit and Its Antidiabetic Effect in KK-Ay Mice

Yilong Liu,Xianan Zhang,Liuhuan Zhan,Chang Xu,Linxiao Sun,Huamin Jiang,Chongde Sun,Xian Li

The present study is to investigate the polyphenolic composition and in vivo antidiabetic effect of white-fleshed Chinese bayberry cultivar “Shui Jing”. By liquid chromatography quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-Q-TOF-MS), 38 polyphenols were identified in the Shui Jing fruit extract (SJE), where proanthocyanidins (PAs), including epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), as well as flavonols, including myricitrin and quercetrin, were the predominant ingredients. After a 5-week experiment, the SJE (200 mg/kg bodyweight) significantly reduced fasting blood glucose, elevated glucose tolerance, and insulin sensitivity in diabetic KK-Ay mice. It markedly attenuated bodyweight gain and decreased glycolipid metabolism-related markers including insulin, leptin, glucagon, triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels in mice. Liver weight and hepatic lipid accumulation were also significantly reduced by the SJE. Gene expressions of insulin 1 (INS1) and glycogen synthase kinase 3 β (GSK3b) were markedly inhibited while the hepatic phosphorylation of AMPKα was significantly increased in the liver of SJE-treated mice, indicating that the SJE may exert an antidiabetic effect through an AMPK-dependent pathway. In conclusion, white bayberry rich in PAs and flavonols may have great potential in the regulation of diabetes mellitus.

Antidepressant-like Effects of Five Essential Oils Inhaled in Reserpine-induced Depressed Mouse Models

Yanqing Ma,Shuanghe Wang,Shanshan Luo,Yixi Zeng,Guofeng Shi,Lanyue zhang,Hui Li

Depression, a prevalent and debilitating mood disorder, remains a significant challenge in clinical treatment. Although pharmacological approaches targeting monoamine dysfunction have demonstrated efficacy, they are often accompanied by limitations and side effects. In this study, reserpine-induced depressed mouse models were used to investigate the antidepressant potential of five essential oils (EOs) derived from Jasminum sambac (JSEOs), Rosa rugosa , Magnolia denudata , Aloysia citriodora (ACEOs), and Abies balsamea . The chemical compositions of the five EOs were analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Subsequently, experimental mice inhaled the EOs for 1 h per day, followed by behavioral assessments using the forced swim test (FST) and tail suspension test (TST). Nissl staining was employed to assess the abundance of normal neurons in the mouse brain. At the same time, immunohistochemistry (IHC), Western blot, and reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction techniques were utilized to analyze the expression of antidepressant-related genes. GC-MS results revealed that the primary components of the five EOs were oxygenated monoterpenes, sesquiterpene hydrocarbons, and oxygenated sesquiterpenoids. All five EOs exhibited antidepressant-like effects, with JSEOs and ACEOs demonstrating the greatest antidepressant efficacy. Behavioral tests showed a reduction in immobility durations in both FST and TST. Nissl staining results indicated an increase in the number of intact neurons in the hippocampus and hypothalamus of mice following EO treatment. Furthermore, the EOs regulated the expression of crucial biomarkers, including 5-hydroxytryptamine 1A receptor (5-HT1A), 5-HT2A, brain-derived neurotrophic factor, corticotropin-releasing factor, and tropomyosin-related kinase B. This study underscores the potential of EO inhalation as an adjunctive therapeutic strategy for depression treatment, provides novel insights into its molecular mechanisms, and supports further exploration of natural remedies in mental health care.
