Formic acid and acetic acid production from corn cob by catalytic oxidation using O2

Ting Lu,Yucui Hou,Weize Wu,Muge Niu,Yupeng Wang

Direct conversion of raw biomass to fine chemicals is of significant conceptual and practical interest. Up to now, the direct conversion of raw biomass to fine chemicals is still a big challenge. The oxidation of biomass to formic acid (FA) and acetic acid (AA) is a promising industrial process in the future. In this work, we reported that a binary catalyst system of Keggin-type heteropoly acid H 5 PV 2 Mo 10 O 40   +   H 2 SO 4 was efficient to directly convert corn cob , a highly abundant renewable agricultural waste, to FA and AA using O 2 as the oxidant in aqueous solutions. The effects of catalyst amount, H 2 SO 4 concentration, reaction temperature, reaction time and initial O 2 pressure on the conversions of corn cob were investigated. Under optimized reaction conditions, corn cob was transformed with a FA yield of 42.5% and an AA yield of 9.1% (based on carbon) after 30   min of reaction at 170   °C. In the oxidation, the pH of the aqueous solution plays a key role. The influences of pH on solid degradation, reaction pathway and oxidation of the components of corn cob were discussed. Hemicellulose is oxidized rapidly followed by partly oxidation of lignin, and cellulose is the most difficult converted part. Products FA and AA mainly come from polysaccharides (hemicellulose and cellulose) and pH has a major influence on cellulose. The recycling of the catalyst system is demonstrated and shows good reusability .

Preparation of acetic acid from crop residues via hydrolysis coupled with oxidation in subcritical water

Majid Ali Mangi,Benwang Li,Peigao Duan,Changqing Cao

In this study, a green and effective method for the production of acetic acid from crop residues via a two-step process (hydrolysis followed by oxidation) in subcritical water was proposed. For the first step, CO 2 is used to catalyze the hydrolysis of crop residues to obtain intermediates. Next, the intermediates were oxidized in the presence of O 2 to obtain acetic acid. The effects of crop residue type on the yield of acetic acid were first studied. Among all the crop residues selected, the corn cobs provided the highest acetic acid yield, which reached 16.70 wt% at 270 °C for 20 min; 0.11 mol CO 2 /corn cob (g) was added for the first step, and 250 °C was added for 50 min, with 0.15 mol O 2 /corn cob (g) added for the second step. By employing corn cobs as feedstock, the effects of the corn cob/water mass ratio, temperature, time, and CO 2 loading in the first step and the effects of temperature, time, and O 2 loading in the second step on the yield of acetic acid were examined. Among all the parameters examined, the corn cob/water mass ratio had the greatest influence on the acetic acid yield. The highest acetic acid yield of 25.80 wt% was obtained at a corn cob/water mass ratio of 0.0016:1. Under fixed reaction conditions, recycling the product mixture can increase the concentration of acetic acid in the final product and reduce the cost of subsequent separation and purification.

Catalytic hydrolysis of corncob for production of furfural and cellulose-rich solids: Product characterization and analysis

Bang Yao,Qinhao Kang,Jie Fu,Yang Liu,Wenya Ao,Long Wang,Zhihui Jiang,Tianhao Zhang,Yongmeng Song,Zeyu Deng,Asif Ali Siyal,Jianjun Dai

Experiments were carried out to investigate cellulose and furfural from catalytic hydrolysis of corncob. This process improved the comprehensive utilization of hemicellulose and cellulose in biomass resources. Influence of factors (temperature, reaction time, concentration of catalysts, liquid to solid ratio (LSR)) on hydrothermal characteristics, furfural yield, properties and retention of cellulose were investigated through orthogonal and parameter tests. Acetic acid (6 wt%) and FeCl 3 (40 mM) achieved the highest furfural yield (47.60%) and relatively high cellulose retention ratio (71.84%) at 180 °C, 45 min, and 3 mL/g of LSR. While AlCl 3 and citric acid obtained low furfural yield and the lowest cellulose retention ratio (8.38%). Furfural was dominant in distillated organics (GC-MS areas ≥97.9%), by contrast furfural, 5-hydroxymethyfurfural and vanillin were main organics in residual liquors. The peak of furfural yield switched to shorter reaction time as temperature increased. Combination of AlCl 3 with acetic acid and citric acid accelerated cellulose degradation. NaCl inhibited furfural yield and promoted lignin decomposition. Higher temperature and greater concentration of FeCl 3 contributed to reduced crystallinity of cellulose during hydrothermal treatment.

Lignosulfonate-modified corncob cellulose biochar as an electrode material for high-performance supercapacitor application

Peikuan Wang,Tianran Zheng,Shuyang Gan,Jiayu Miao,Jianfeng Yao

Because of its wide range of material sources, high specific surface area, and advantageous electrochemical characteristics, cellulose biochar derived from natural lignocellulosic raw materials has been extensively applied as electrodes for energy storage materials. To produce carbon materials with improved qualities, lignocellulosic substrates often need to be pretreated, activated, and modified. In this study, corncob was processed with bisulfite to break down its recalcitrant structure, followed by direct use of the pretreated substrate to avoid the post-pretreatment washing step and take full advantage of the generated lignosulfonate (LS) in the next pyrolysis process. The residual LS in the pretreated sample not only increased the specific surface area of the corncob-biochar, but also introduced the heteroatom S. The biochar obtained through pyrolysis at 900 °C with KOH activation from unwashed pretreated corncob (ABU-900) had a specific surface area of 3130 m 2 /g, and it displayed a high coulombic efficiency of 94.1% after 5000 cycles in a three-electrode system. Owing to the successful introduction of heteroatoms, an asymmetric supercapacitor device (ABU-900//activated carbon) delivered an excellent specific capacitance of 141.2 F/g at a current density of 1 A/g and an energy density of 43.7 Wh/kg with a power density of 619 W/kg. This work offers a new and simple route for preparing cellulose biochar-based electrodes from lignocellulose waste.

Polyethylene imine modified hydrochar adsorption for chromium (VI) and nickel (II) removal from aqueous solution

Yuanji Shi,Tao Zhang,Hongqiang Ren,Andrea Kruse,Ruofan Cui

An adsorbent hydrochar was synthesized from corn cobs and modified with polyethylene imine (PEI). The hydrochars before and after modification were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and thermogravimetric analysis. FTIR and XPS revealed that the PEI was grafted onto the hydrochar via ether and imine bonds formed with glutaraldehyde. The maximum adsorption capacities for Cr(VI) (33.663   mg/g) and Ni(II) (29.059   mg/g) on the modified hydrochars were 365% and 43.7% higher, respectively, than those on the unmodified hydrochar. A pseudo-second-order model described the adsorption of Ni(II) and Cr(VI) on all the adsorbents. The adsorption of Cr(VI) was endothermic, spontaneous, increased disorder, and obeyed the Langmuir model. By contrast, the adsorption of Ni(II) was exothermic, spontaneous, decreased disorder, and obeyed the Freundlich model. XPS confirmed that the adsorption sites and mechanisms for Ni(II) and Cr(VI) on the modified hydrochars were different.

The development of activated carbon from corncob for CO2 capture

Xia Wang,Wulan Zeng,Chunling Xin,Xiangjun Kong,Xiude Hu,Qingjie Guo

The accumulation and incineration of crop waste pollutes the environment and releases a large amount of CO2. In this study, corncob crop waste was directly activated using solid KOH in an inert atmosphere to prepare porous activated carbon (AC) to capture CO2, and to introduce N-containing functional groups that favour CO2 adsorption, urea was mixed with corncob and KOH to prepare N-doped AC. The physical and chemical properties of the AC were characterized, and the effects of the mass ratio of KOH and urea to corncob, the activation temperature and time as well as regeneration were investigated to explore the optimal preparation process. The pores in the AC are mainly micropores, with the specific surface area and pore volume reaching 926.07 m2 g−1 and 0.40 cm3 g−1 for KOH-activated corncob and 1096.70 m2 g−1 and 0.48 cm3 g−1 after N-doping; the C–O plus O–H ratio and the –NH– ratio, which favour CO2 adsorption in N-doped AC were 6.04 and 1.92%, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacities for KOH-activated corncob before and after N-doping were 3.49 and 4.58 mmol g−1, respectively, at 20 °C and remained at 3.44 and 4.52 mmol g−1 after ten regenerations. The prepared corncob-based AC showed good application prospects for CO2 capture.

Adsorption of Ni2+ in aqueous solution by KMnO4 modified biomass: investigation on adsorption kinetics and modification mechanism

Yuxing Tong,Qunshan Yan,Song Gao,Bin Xiong,Xiangbing Tang,Zhichang Liu,Pengfei Li,Ming Huang,Ziwei Wang,Xi Le,Wei Pei,Zejun Dai,Zhe Xiong,Yi Wang

In this study, KMnO4 modification was proved to effectively increase the Ni2+ adsorption capacity of biomass. In order to clarify the KMnO4 modification mechanism, the Ni2+ adsorption characteristics of KMnO4 modified corncob (PPCB) under adsorption time, pH and Ni2+ concentration were studied. The results showed that the adsorption was the pseudo second-order kinetic process, indicating that chemisorption was the dominated process, which followed the Langmuir isotherm model and the highest Ni2+ adsorption capacity of PPCB reached 35.6 mg/g. By KMnO4 modification, the corncob was oxidized to generate carboxylates, and the MnO2 (reduction product) was loaded on the modified corncob, both carboxylates and MnO2 increased the Ni2+ adsorption capacity of PPCB. The molecular dynamic results indicated the carboxylate structures had the strongest adsorption capacity. Moreover, the Ni2+ removal efficiency of KMnO4 modified biomass decreased linearly with the increase of lignin content in biomass, while KMnO4 modified lignin showed a good adsorption performance, indicating that the cross-linked structures between lignin and other components in the biomass could inhibit the adsorption capacity of PPCB.

Photodegradation of Reactive Blue 4 Using Suspension of Anatase-Titanium Dioxide and Corn Cob

Shariena Shamsul Bahari,Yuen Mei Lian,Ros Azlinawati Ramli,Lee Siew Ling

Textile dyeing often employs reactive dyes. The dye wastewater contains hazardous materials and is toxic to humans and the environment. Photodegradation using a semiconductor photocatalyst is a promising alternative approach for water purification and wastewater treatment. However, the photocatalyst’s low adsorption ability is a problem in the photocatalysis process. To compensate for this shortcoming, photocatalyst content must be combined with an adsorbent. Raw corn cob and titanium dioxide (TiO2) were used in this photocatalysis. Due to a synergistic impact, raw corn cob’s ability to adsorb and titanium dioxide’s ability to photodegrade organic pollutants from water bodies is expected to boost the removal performance. The degradation of Reactive Blue 4 (RB4) as a targeted dye was carried out in this research using a suspended mixture of commercial anatase TiO2 and raw corn cob under UV light. The effect of initial pH solution, initial dye concentration and contact time, TiO2-corn cob dosages, and the influence of other pollutants were investigated as factors influencing photodegradation-adsorption of RB4. The high removal rate of RB4 was obtained at a low pH of 2 and RB4 concentration of 40 ppm. The increased dose of TiO2-corn cob improved the RB4 dye removal performance. In conclusion, combining photodegradation and adsorption systems as a hybrid treatment method resulted in a synergistic increase in the efficiency of RB4 removal.

A kinetic study on the hydrolysis of corncob residues to levulinic acid in the FeCl3–NaCl system

Wang Chao,Yang Guihua,Zhang Xueming,Shao Lupeng,Lyu Gaojin,Mao Jianzhen,Liu Shijie,Xu Feng

Levulinic acid (LA) production from corncob acid hydrolysis residues (CAHR) using FeCl 3 as Lewis acid catalyst in green solutions of salt was investigated. The reaction kinetic relationships were determined in the temperature range of 160–180 °C, with FeCl 3 concentrations of 0.12–0.36 M, and a reaction time of 0–60 min. The maximum LA concentration of 59.0 mol% (24.5 g/L) was achieved at 170 °C in a 30% NaCl solution containing 0.24 M FeCl 3 . A pseudo first-order kinetic model was proposed to describe the cellulose deconstruction to LA. The model agreed perfectly with the evolution in the concentrations of the major compounds such as glucose, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural and LA during the CAHR hydrolysis. The kinetic model developed for CAHR was in good agreement with that previously developed for other lignocellulosic systems. Based on our kinetic model and reaction system, the LA yield is increased at the lower end of the temperature range with the higher acid concentrations. The results indicated that the concentrated seawater after desalination could be a green solvent in the biorefinery.

Production of furfural with high yields from corncob under extremely low water/solid ratios

Qiong Wang,Wei Qi,Wen Wang,Yu Zhang,Noppol Leksawasdi,Xinshu Zhuang,Qiang Yu,Zhenhong Yuan

Furfural is considered to be one of the top 30 potential chemicals derived from lignocellulosic biomass . Compared to conventional diluted acid catalysis, furfural production from lignocellulose was significantly improved by the addition of an immiscible organic solvent into the diluted acid solution. However, high conversion is usually achieved under a high water/solid ratio (>1, v/m), and the furfural product is distributed in both the organic solvent phase and the aqueous phase , leading to difficulty of furfural recovery and increasing the cost of furfural production. The present work investigated corncob conversion in a diluted sulfuric acid-toluene biphasic system with extremely low water/solid ratios (≤1). It was found that a high furfural yield (65.67 mol%) was achieved in a very short time (10 min) under a high solid loading of 200% (in the aqueous phase) under the conditions of 1.5 MPa N 2 , 0.5:1 water/solid ratio (v/w), 10:1 toluene/solid ratio (v/m), and 3.85 wt% H 2 SO 4 (in the aqueous phase). After the reaction, no aqueous phase existed, and furfural was completely accumulated in the toluene phase. Further research showed that the majority of the furfural content (84.73%, GC-MS detection) was in the toluene phase, which is beneficial for its recovery. This work provides an effective and inexpensive method for the production of furfural from lignocellulose.

Regulating aromatic hydrocarbon components from catalytic pyrolysis of corn cob lignin with a tailored HZSM-5@Al-SBA-15 hierarchical zeolite

Shaoqing Wang,Zhihe Li,Weiming Yi,Peng Fu,Xueyuan Bai

Catalytic pyrolysis of corn cob lignin were preformed using a tailored HZSM-5 @Al-SBA-15 hierarchical zeolite for the production of value-added aromatic hydrocarbon. Resulted showed that the highly ordered two-dimensional p6mm mesoporous shell could uniformly form on the surface of HZSM-5 core phase. The porosity and acidity of the HZSM-5 @Al-SBA-15 could be tailored by adjusting the TEOS/HZSM-5 mass ratio in the synthesis process. The aromatic hydrocarbon components regulated due to pre-cracking and enhanced diffusion via the mesoporous shell, as well as the retained shape-selectivity of the HZSM-5 core. Herein, the relative content of MAHs reached 45.02% with fewer poly-aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) of 25.91% when the TEOS/HZSM-5 mass ratio of 1.0. However, the length of the diffusion path had a certain impact on the anti-coking behavior. The catalytic stability of the hierarchical zeolites was also improved, with less coke formation than HZSM-5 alone. This work demonstrates that using a tailored hierarchical zeolite to regulate aromatic hydrocarbon components is feasible, and provide a reference for the practical application of agricultural crop wastes.

Fast and Selective Degradation of Biomass for Xylose, Glucose and Lignin under Mild Conditions

Shangzhong Zhang,Yi Duan,Changchang Teng,Hongdong Quan,Xiuguo Yang,Hongyan Li,Xiaohe Li,Lifeng Yan

The conversion of lignocellulose into valuable chemicals has been recognized as the key technology in green chemistry. However, selective degradation of hemicellulose and cellulose with the production of lignin is still a challenge. Therefore, a two-step process has been developed to degrade corncob into xylose and glucose under mild conditions. At first, the corncob was treated with the lower concentration of zinc chloride aqueous solution (30–55 w%) at 95 °C with a short reaction time (8–12 min) and 30.4 w% (selectivity = 89%) of xylose obtained with a solid residue of the composite of cellulose and lignin. Next, the solid residue was treated with a high concentration of zinc chloride aqueous solution (65–85 w%) at 95 °C for about 10 min, and 29.4 w% (selectivity = 92%) of glucose can be obtained. Combining the two steps, the total yield of xylose is 97%, while glucose is 95%. In addition, high pure lignin can be obtained simultaneously, which was confirmed using HSQC studies. Furthermore, for the solid residue of the first-step reaction, a ternary deep eutectic solvent (DES) (choline chloride/oxalic acid/1,4-butanediol, ChCl/OA/BD) has been used to separate the cellulose and lignin efficiently, and high-quality cellulose (Re-C) and lignin (Re-L) were obtained. Furthermore, it provides a simple method to disassemble the lignocellulose for monosaccharides, lignin, and cellulose. Keywords:lignocellulose;corncob;glucose;xylose;lignin
