The Analysis of Polylactic Acid Oligomers and Their Fate in Laboratory and Agricultural Soil

Jing Yang,Changzhi Shi,Chaoran Xu,Yankai Zhang,Zhuolan Zhang,Maoyong Song,Qiqing Chen,Zimeng Wang,Xiangcheng Pan,Mingliang Fang

Polylactic acid (PLA) is the most widely consumed biodegradable plastic worldwide. Though PLA products have the advantages of easy degradation and a small carbon footprint, poly(lactic acid) oligomers (OLAs) released from PLA have been found to exhibit toxicity. Accurate quantification of the presence of the OLAs in soil is crucial for understanding their occurrence and environmental fate. In this study, we synthesized sequence-defined OLA standards and deuterated OLAs (d-OLAs) and developed a broad-spectrum extraction method with water-saturated ethyl acetate and 0.1% formic acid, achieving sensitive and precise quantification of the OLAs across various soil environments. The simulated experiments showed that PLA-based products released amounts of OLAs, reaching their peak within 24 h, followed by degradation, with the OLAs remaining detectable in the soil for up to 168 h. Meanwhile, the OLA with a degree of polymerization (DP) of 2 exhibited the highest concentration, while higher-DP OLAs demonstrated greater stability in soil compared to others. In the field samples, OLAs were detected in soil over the long term beneath PLA-based biodegradable mulch films with residual concentrations reaching up to 16.10 ± 0.37 ng/g. This study bridges foundational analytical methods and addresses data gaps for further investigations into the environmental fates of the OLAs and PLA.

Impact of biochar on the degradation rates of three pesticides by vegetables and its effects on soil bacterial communities under greenhouse conditions

Sun Caixia,Liu Yuhong,Bei Ke,Zheng Weiran,Wang Qinfei,Wang Qiang

A 28 days pesticide degradation experiment was conducted for broccoli ( Brassica oleracea L. var. italica Planch) and pakchoi ( Brassica chinensis L.) with three pesticides (chlorantraniliprole (CAP), haloxyfop-etotyl (HPM), and indoxacarb (IXB)) to explore the effects of biochar on pesticide environmental fate and rhizosphere soil diversity. Rice straw biochar (RB) was applied to soil at a 25.00 t ha −1 dosage under greenhouse conditions, and its effects on the degradation of three pesticides in vegetables and in soil were investigated individually. Overall, RB application effectively facilitated CAP and HPM degradation in broccoli by 13.51–39.42% and in broccoli soil by 23.80–74.10%, respectively. RB application slowed the degradation of CAP, HPM and IXB in pakchoi by 0.00–57.17% and slowed the degradation of CAP in pakchoi by 37.32–43.40%. The results showed that the effect of RB application on pesticide degradation in crops and soil was related to biochar properties, pesticide solubility, plant growth status, and soil characteristics. Rhizosphere soil microorganisms were also investigated, and the results showed that biochar application may be valuable for altering bacterial richness and diversity. The effect of biochar application on pesticide residues in crops and soil was influenced by the vegetable variety first, and the second was pesticide characteristics. RB applied to soil at a 25.00 t ha −1 dosage under greenhouse conditions is recommended for broccoli production to ensure food safety. Our results suggested that biochar application in soil could reduce pesticide non-point source pollution, especially for highly soluble pesticides, and could affect soil microorganisms.

Formation of cation bridges and its promoting mechanism for sorption of sulfamethoxazole by montmorillonite

Peng Yi,Xiao Shu,Chenhui Wang,Mingfu Li,Yu Huang,Min Wu,Lijuan Zhang,Quan Chen

The coexistence of metal cations is often accompanied by organic pollution and could affect the environmental fate of organics by mediating the formation of cation bridges. However, the environmental fate and risk of organics in cation co-existing environments are poorly understood due to the lack of accurate identification of cation bridge formation and stability. In this study, the sorption of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) on montmorillonite (MT) with the coexistence of three different valence metal cations (Na + , Ca 2+ , and Cr 3+ ) was investigated. Ca 2+ and Cr 3+ can significantly promote the sorption of SMX on MT for about 5∼10 times promotion, respectively, while Na + bridges displayed little effect on the sorption of SMX. The sorption binding energy of SMX with MT-Ca (−44.01 kcal/mol) and MT-Cr (−64.57 kcal/mol) bridges was significantly lower than that with MT-Na (−38.45 kcal/mol) and MT (−39.39 kcal/mol), indicating that the sorption affinity of SMX on Cr and Ca bridges was much stronger. The higher valence of the cations also resulted in a more stable adsorbed SMX with less desorption fluctuation. In addition, the relatively higher initial concentration of SMX and the valence of cations increased the bonding density of the cation bridges, thus promoting the apparent sorption of SMX on MT to a certain extent. This work reveals the formation and function of cation bridges in the sorption of SMX on MT. It lays a theoretical foundation for further understanding the environmental fate and risk of organics.

The role of dissolved organic matter during Per- and Polyfluorinated Substance (PFAS) adsorption, degradation, and plant uptake: A review

Yuwen Qi,Huimin Cao,Weijie Pan,Cuiping Wang,Yanna Liang

The negative effects of polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) on the environment and health have recently attracted much attention. This article reviews the influence of soil- and water-derived dissolved organic matter (DOM) on the environmental fate of PFAS. In addition to being co-adsorped with PFAS to increase the adsorption capacity, DOM competes with PFAS for adsorption sites on the surface of the material, thereby reducing the removal rate of PFAS or increasing water solubility, which facilitates desorption of PFAS in the soil. It can quench some active species and inhibit the degradation of PFAS. In contrast, before DOM in water self-degrades, DOM has a greater promoting effect on the degradation of PFAS because DOM can complex with iron, iodine, among others, and act as an electron shuttle to enhance electron transfer . In soil aggregates, DOM can prevent microorganisms from being poisoned by direct exposure to PFAS. In addition, DOM increases the desorption of PFAS in plant root soil, affecting its bioavailability . In general, DOM plays a bidirectional role in adsorption, degradation, and plant uptake of PFAS, which depends on the types and functional groups of DOM. It is necessary to enhance the positive role of DOM in reducing the environmental risks posed by PFAS. In future, attention should be paid to the DOM-induced reduction of PFAS and development of a green and efficient continuous defluorination technology .

Effects of surfactants on the adsorption of norfloxacin onto ferrihydrite: comparison between anionic and cationic surfactants

Yuwei Zhu,Bin Wang,Usman Farooq,Yanxiang Li,Zhichong Qi,Qiang Zhang

There is little information on how widespread surfactants affect the adsorption of norfloxacin (NOR) onto iron oxide minerals. In order to elucidate the effects of various surfactants on the adsorption characteristics of NOR onto typical iron oxides, we have explored the different influences of sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS), an anionic surfactant, and didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB), a cationic surfactant, on the interactions between NOR and ferrihydrite under different solution chemistry conditions. Interestingly, SDBS facilitated NOR adsorption, whereas DDAB inhibited NOR adsorption. The adsorption-enhancement effect of SDBS was ascribed to the enhanced electrostatic attraction, the interactions between the adsorbed SDBS on ferrihydrite surfaces and NOR molecules, and the bridging effect of SDBS between NOR and iron oxide. In comparison, the adsorption-inhibition effect of DDAB owning to the adsorption site competitive adsorption between NOR and DDAB for the effective sites as well as the steric hindrance between NOR-DDAB complexes and the adsorbed DDAB on ferrihydrite surfaces. Additionally, the magnitude of the effects of surfactants on NOR adsorption declined with increasing pH values from 5.0 to 9.0, which was related to the amounts of surfactant binding to ferrihydrite surfaces. Moreover, when the background electrolyte was Ca2+, the enhanced effect of SDBS on NOR adsorption was caused by the formation of NOR-Ca2+-SDBS complexes. The inhibitory effect of DDAB was due to the DDAB coating on ferrihydrite, which undermined the cation-bridging effect. Together, the findings from this work emphasize the essential roles of widely existing surfactants in controlling the environmental fate of quinolone antibiotics.

Mechanistic investigation of direct photodegradation of chloroquine phosphate under simulated sunlight

Weiming Xiang,Fahao Xu,Dong Wan,Xing Wang,Fan Luo,Yong Chen

Chloroquine phosphate (CQ) is an antiviral drug for Coronavirus Disease 2019 and an old drug for treatment of malaria, which has been detected in natural waters. Despite its prevalence, the environmental fate of CQ remains unclear. In this study, the direct photodegradation of CQ under simulated sunlight was investigated. The effect of various parameters such as pH, initial concentration and environmental matrix were examined. The photodegradation quantum yield of CQ (4.5 × 10 −5 −0.025) increased with the increasing pH value in the range of 6.0–10.0. The electron spin resonance (ESR) spectrometry and quenching experiments verified that the direct photodegradation of CQ was primarily associated with excited triplet states of CQ ( 3 CQ*). The common ions had negligible effect and humic substances exhibited a negative effect on CQ photodegradation. The photoproducts were identified using high-resolution mass spectrometry and the photodegradation pathway of CQ was proposed. The direct photodegradation of CQ involved the cleavage of the C–Cl bond and substitution of the hydroxyl group, followed by further oxidation to yield carboxylic products. The photodegradation processes were further confirmed by the density functional theory (DFT) computation for the energy barrier of CQ dichlorination. The findings contribute to the assessment of the ecological risk associated with the overuse of Coronavirus drugs during global public health emergencies.

Dynamic exchange between Ag+ and Ag0: Implications for the environmental fate of Ag nanoparticles

Menghui Chu,Yafei Fan,Zhaoli Sun,Dezhi Kong,Jianfei Yao,Guanyun Zhang,Shouqing Ni,Yifeng Wang

The environmental transformation and fate of nanomaterials are critical for their consequences. Although Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs) are frequently detected in the environment, their transformation and fate, particularly in relation to sediment or mineral surfaces, remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the behaviors of Ag NPs on γ-Al 2 O 3 , a model mineral, under environmentally relevant aqueous conditions. We discovered that Ag NPs gradually diminished during light irradiation, ultimately transforming into ultrasmall NPs, clusters, and single atoms. The newly formed secondary Ag 0 on the surface of γ-Al 2 O 3 exhibited low sunlight absorption but high dissolution activity. A chemical equilibration was established quickly between Ag + in the solution bulk and Ag 0 on the γ-Al 2 O 3 surfaces, but dynamic exchange between Ag + and Ag 0 continued to evolve Ag 0 speciation afterwards. Light drove these processes, with O 2 involved. The dynamic exchange persisted continuously, although its rate could be influenced by environmental parameters. Synopsis In a simulated environmental photochemical process, Ag 0 and Ag + undergo rapid dynamic exchange, leading to the downsizing of Ag nanoparticles on γ-Al 2 O 3 surfaces into ultrasmall nanoparticles, clusters, and single atoms.

Impact of different modes of adsorption of natural organic matter on the environmental fate of nanoplastics

Jiayi Wu,Ruifen Jiang,Qinglin Liu,Gangfeng Ouyang

Recently, the exposure of nanoplastics (NPs) in the environment has received extensive attention. Research concerning their fate and transport in the aquatic environment is very important and urgent. In this study, the influence of two sources of natural organic matter (NOM) on the behaviour of NPs were investigated in view of the complexity of NOM. Humic acid (HA), Suwannee River humic acid (SRHA) and Upper Mississippi River NOM (MRNOM) were chosen to represent pedogenic NOM, while bovine serum albumin (BSA) was on behalf of aquagenic NOM. The results showed that NOM could reduce the aggregation and sedimentation of NPs, exhibiting excellent stabilization effect. The stability effect was affected by the concentrations and the sources of NOMs. For pedogenic NOMs, the stabilization effect was caused by adsorption modes with different microscopic morphologies through specific functional groups, while it was induced by the mode of steric stabilization in the presence of BSA. Spectroscopic method and micromorphology study further provided a new insight into exploring the possible mechanism of the interaction between NPs and NOMs.

Bacteria mediated Fenton-like reaction drives the biotransformation of carbon nanomaterials

Jingwei Wang,Qiao Ma,Zhaojing Zhang,Shuzhen Li,Catherine Sekyerebea Diko,Chunxiao Dai,Henglin Zhang,Yuanyuan Qu

Carbon nanomaterials (CNs), which gain heightened attention as novel materials, are increasingly incorporated into daily products and thus are released into the environment. Limited research on CNs environmental fates lags their industry growth, only few bacteria have been confirmed to biotransform CNs and the mechanism behind has not been revealed yet. In this study, four types of commercial CNs, i.e. graphene oxide (GO), reduced graphene oxide (RGO), single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), and oxidized (carboxylated) SWCNTs, were selected for investigation. The biotransformation of CNs by Labrys sp. WJW, which could grow with these CNs as the sole carbon source, was investigated. The bacterial transformation was proved by qPCR, transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, liquid chromatography/time-of-flight/mass spectrometry, and gas chromatograph-mass spectrometry analyses. The biotransformation resulted in morphology change, defect increase and functional group change of these CNs. Furthermore, the underlying mechanism of CNs biodegradation mediated by extracellular Fenton-like reaction was demonstrated. In this reaction, the OH production was mediated by reduction of H 2 O 2 involved a continuous cycle of Fe(II)/Fe(III). These findings reveal a novel degradation mechanism of microorganism towards high molecular weight substrate, which will provide a new insight into the environmental fate of CNs and the guidance for their safer use.

Environmental fate of the anti-parasitic ivermectin in an aquatic micro-ecological system after a single oral administration

Di Wang,Bing Han,Shaowu Li,Yongsheng Cao,Xue Du,Tongyan Lu

Background Ivermectin (IVM) has been widely used in the aquaculture industry since its efficacy against parasites. However, the degradation of IVM was very slow in aquatic environments and the environmental fate of IVM in a complete aquatic system was still not clear. Therefore, comparable studies in a complete aquatic system were merited and helped to elucidate the environmental fate and effects of IVM. Methods An aquatic micro-ecological system containing an aquatic environment (water and sediment) and aquatic organisms (invertebrates, aquatic plants and fish) was built to simulate the natural rearing conditions. A single dose of 0.3 mg kg −1 body weight of IVM was given to the fish by oral gavage. Water, sediment, the roots and leaves of the aquatic plants, the soft tissue of the invertebrates and the visceral mass and muscle of fish samples were collected at 0.5 hours, 1 day, 7 days, 15 days, 30 days, 45 days, 60 days and 70 days after the treatment. IVM concentration in each sample was determined using ELISA method. Results IVM was quickly and widely distributed into the whole aquatic system in one day, and then was highly accumulated in organisms resulting in long-term residues. IVM was exchanged multiple times between the different media, which caused continuous fluctuations in the concentration of IVM in the water and sediment. It was worth noting that there was a second peak value of IVM in the fish and invertebrates after 30 days. The environmental fate of the IVM in the aquatic micro-ecological system showed that the drug was transferred from the fish to aquatic plants in the first seven days, and then gathered in the water and sediment, finally accumulating in the invertebrates. Our results indicated that an effective aquatic micro-ecological system was successfully established, and it could be applied to the study the environmental fate of IVM, which will aid the scientific use of this anti-parasitic agent during aquaculture.

Assessing environmental fate of hexavalent chromium as influenced by fractionation of ferrihydrite with dissolved organic matter

Yihao Li,Xiaoshan Qiu,Meiqing Chen,Pingxiao Wu,Heng bai,Wenchao Niu,Ahmed Zubair,Jianxi Zhu,Zhi Dang

The dynamic interactions among iron (Fe) oxides, dissolved organic matter (DOM) and toxic trace metals play crucial roles in risk assessment and environmental remediation. Although the inhibitory effects of DOM on the iron oxides transformation process have been studied previously, there is still a lack of mechanistic and quantitative understanding on the kinetics of Cr(VI) and ferrihydrite transformation in the present of DOM. In this study, we investigated the fractionation process of DOM on ferrihydrite and its influence on the fate of Cr(VI) and transformation of ferrihydrite. The result of three-dimension excitation emission matrix (3D-EEM), Q-Exactive LC-MS/MS, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) indicated that fulvic acid-like compounds of DOM were the mainly fractionated compounds on the surface of ferrihydrite, which further inhibited the transformation of ferrihydrite. Besides, bracewellite (CrO(OH)) generated as an accompanied mineral during the transformation of ferrihydrite in the present of Cr(VI). Based on the DFT theoretical calculation, we concluded that Cr(VI) mainly in the form of HCr O 4 − was more inclined to be adsorbed on iron-oxide tetrahedron by inner-sphere monodentate mononuclear configurations. The findings on the dynamic coupling among Fe oxide transformation and Cr(VI) sequestration under the effect of DOM provided the basis for accurately predicting the fate of trace elements and iron mineral.

Machine Learning-Assisted Insights into Sources and Fate of Microplastics in Wastewater Treatment Plants

Pengfei Wu,Bolun Wang,Yi Lu,Guodong Cao,Peisi Xie,Wei Wang,Duoli Chen,Gefei Huang,Hangbiao Jin,Zhu Yang,Zongwei Cai

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) converge multiple sourced microplastics (MPs) and serve as a temporary repository in the case of releasing them into the environment. The process involves two critical scientific problems, including the source composition of MPs and their fate in WWTPs. Therefore, this study conducted a full-scale investigation in each stage of four WWTPs in Hong Kong, with the results showing that the fate of MPs was mainly affected by their physicochemical characteristics and WWTP parameters. Moreover, three conventional machine learning (ML) methods, namely the multilabel decision tree, random forests, and support vector machine, were also applied for figuring out the source compositions of MPs. The results demonstrated that the sources of MPs were mainly composed of domestic (57.3–59.9%), industrial (21.1–21.7%), coastal (11.2–12.7%), domestic/medical (4.6–5.1%), and domestic/agricultural (2.6–3.8%) sources, respectively. The discovery of domestic/medical-sourced MPs should draw the public’s attention to the insufficient management of used face masks. This study was a novel attempt to utilize ML to explore the fate and sources of MPs in environmental compartments, which provided new insights into developing the MP source tracing approaches from the source management of plastic contaminants.
