Epoxy-terminated hyperbranched polymers (EHBPs) are a class of macromolecular polymers with a hyperbranched structure containing epoxy groups. They possess characteristics such as low viscosity, high functionality, and thermal stability, which endow them with broad application potential in materials science and chemical engineering. This study uses epoxidized soybean oil (ESO) as the raw material, which undergoes ring-opening reactions with glycerol and is esterified with 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)propionic acid (DMPA) to obtain epoxy soybean oil polyol (EGD) with a high hydroxyl value. Subsequently, four types of EHBPs are synthesized by incorporating epichlorohydrin (ECH) in mass ratios of 1:3, 1:4, 1:5, and 1:6 under strong alkaline conditions. The product structure is characterized using FT–IR and GPC. The degree of branching of EGD is calculated using1H NMR and13C NMR spectroscopy. The epoxy value of EHBPs is tested using the hydrochloric acid–acetone method, and the water contact angle, adhesion properties, rheological properties, and thermal properties of the EHBPs are also evaluated. The results show that the degree of branching of EGD is 0.45. The epoxy values of the EHBPs are 0.73, 0.79, 0.82, and 0.89 mol/100g, respectively. As the epoxy value and molecular weight of the epoxy hyperbranched polymers (EHBPs) increase, the water contact angle and adhesion strength of the EHBPs rise progressively and the viscosity decreases. Additionally, the glass transition temperature increases with the increase in the epoxy value. These epoxy hyperbranched polymers with low viscosity and high adhesion strength offer a promising approach for modifying surface coatings or formulating adhesives.

Reactive group content was a key parameter in polymer curing process. However, the conventional methods to measure the curing were destructive and time consuming. In this article, near-infrared spectra technology had been applied for reactive group analysis of the photothermal curing silicone to achieve rapid nondestructive and quantitative detection. The calibration model was developed about epoxy value and CC double bond value, with determination coefficient ( R 2 ) of 0.9631 and 0.9689. Root mean square error of prediction were 0.0179 and 0.0143 by partial least square regression. The optimized calibration model was used to predict the content of epoxy value and CC double bond value in the photothermal curing process, it proved that the silicone resin cured under UV-radiation and heat. This novel method provided a promising approach to analysis the curing mechanism and quality parameters of resin.

Microcapsules (MCs) prepared with diverse wall material structures may exhibit different properties. In this study, MCs were fabricated with three kinds of epoxy phenolic novolac resins (EPNs), which possessed unique epoxy values as wall-forming materials by interfacial polymerization. The effects of the EPN types on the surface morphology, particle size distribution, encapsulation efficiency, thermal stability as well as release behavior and bioactivity of the MCs were investigated. In all three samples, the MCs had nearly spherical shapes with fine monodispersities and sizes in the range of 7–30 μm. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images showed that some small pores (ranging from 50 nm to 400 nm) appeared on the microcapsule surfaces and that the porosity decreased with an increasing of epoxy value. The X-ray diffractometer (XRD) analysis indicated that the cured EPN shells had larger degrees of crosslinking with higher epoxy values, leading to better thermal stabilities. Moreover, the release rate of the core material (pendimethalin) decreased with an increasing of epoxy value and thus resulted in a lower herbicidal control efficacy. The results of our research will enhance the potential application of EPNs as smart wall-forming materials to prepare porous MCs for controlled release.

Graphical An epoxy on both your houses! A trifunctional bio-based epoxy resin (denoted TEIA) is synthesized from itaconic acid. Its curing reaction with poly(propylene glycol) bis(2-aminopropyl ether) (D230) and methyl hexahydrophthalic anhydride (MHHPA) is investigated. As a result of high epoxy value and low viscosity, TEIA shows high performance and good processability. A bio-based epoxy resin (denoted TEIA) with high epoxy value (1.16) and low viscosity (0.92 Pa s, 25 °C) was synthesized from itaconic acid and its chemical structure was confirmed by 1 H NMR and 13 C NMR spectroscopy. Its curing reaction with poly(propylene glycol) bis(2-aminopropyl ether) (D230) and methyl hexahydrophthalic anhydride (MHHPA) was investigated. For comparison, the commonly used diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) was also cured with the same curing agents. The results demonstrated that TEIA showed higher curing reactivity towards D230/MHHPA and lower viscosity compared with DGEBA, resulting in the better processability. Owing to its high epoxy value and unique structure, comparable or better glass transition temperature as well as mechanical properties could be obtained for the TEIA-based network relative to the DGEBA-based network. The results indicated that itaconic acid is a promising renewable feedstock for the synthesis of bio-based epoxy resin with high performance.

The development of new bio-based epoxy resins and the search for new application areas have become important research directions for bio-based epoxy resins. Using protocatechuic acid (PA) as a bio-based raw material, brominated alkenes with different chain length were introduced into PA through substitution reaction, and then oxidized to obtain epoxy resins (PA-EP) with different epoxy values. After that, it was introduced into epoxy resin (diglycidyl ether bisphenol A [DGEBA]) sizing agent to replace part of DGEBA to prepare new sizing agents. Sizing amount test and sizing CF surface morphology show that the introduction of PA-EP with high-epoxy value made it easier be adhered to carbon fiber (CF) surface during sizing process. Interfacial shear strength and interlaminar shear strength of composite made of sizing CF (20 wt% PA-EP-3) were 56.86% and 30.29% improvement against the bare CF, which was attributed to the increase in surface energy and epoxy groups after CF sizing. Therefore, PA-EP with high-epoxy value was applied as sizing agent for improving interface performance of CF for the first time, and this application was less affected by its low-output problem compared to its application as a matrix resin in the field of composite manufacturing.

High-resolution 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H NMR ) was advanced to determine both epoxy value and iodine value ( IV ) of vegetable oils that occur during their epoxidation. For calibration, rather than using a series of diluted stock samples, epoxidized soybean oils with a range of IV and epoxy value synthesized using entrapped peroxophosphotungstate as the catalyst under different reaction conditions were used. During the epoxidation reaction, IV and epoxy value were tracked with respect to time using 1 H NMR and conventional volumetric methods. The integrated peak area of the olefinic hydrogens (5.3–5.5 ppm) was used to calculate the absolute number of double-bonded protons. By comparison of IV obtained by 1 H NMR and the traditional Wijs-cyclohexane methods, the correlation coefficient was R 2 = 0.9997 for the regression equation y = 1.1314 x + 1.0035, where x was the result given by 1 H NMR. The average integrated peak areas related to the hydrogens of the epoxide groups located at chemical shifts of 2.9 ppm (monoepoxide) and 3.1 ppm (diepoxide) were used to determine the epoxy value. The quantification of the number of epoxides was carried out by 1 H NMR and the values obtained were correlated with epoxide content determined by the hydrochloric acid/acetone method. As a consequence, the correlation coefficient was R 2 = 0.9991 for the regression equation y = 0.0052 x + 1.7258, where x was the average integrated peak areas related to the hydrogens of the epoxide groups by 1 H NMR. The novelty of our study lies in the simultaneous correlation between IV and epoxy value obtained from conventional titrations, the integrated peak area related to olefinic protons, and the average integrated peak area located at the hydrogen of epoxide group, calculated using 1 H NMR. This approach is used to monitor and optimize the epoxidation reaction.
