The corrosion behavior of zinc-rich epoxy primers or paints (ZRPs) with different conducting polyaniline-grafted graphene (PANI/Gr) contents was investigated. Conductivity of the formed PANI/Gr nanosheets was significantly improved by employing the Gr as the inner template to synthesize the PANI. The protective properties and electrochemical behavior of coatings with artificial defects were investigated by monitoring the free corrosion potential versus time and by using localized electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (LEIS). A synergetic enhancement of the physical barrier role of the coating and the zinc sacrificial cathodic protection was achieved in the case of ZRP including PANI/Gr nanosheets. In addition, the ZRP mixed with the PANI/Gr at a content of 0.6% exhibited the best anticorrosion performance across the range of investigated PANI/Gr contents. Keywords:conducting polymer;PANI;LEIS;graphene;corrosion

The effect of single-layer graphene sheets (Gr) on the corrosion protection of zinc-rich epoxy primers (ZRPs) was investigated. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with an energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) were used to characterize morphology and composition of the coatings after immersion for 25 days. The cross-sectional SEM images and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed that the addition of single-layer graphene facilitated assembling of zinc oxides on the interface between the coating and the steel. The open circuit potential (OCP), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements revealed that both the cathodic protection and barrier performance of the ZRP were enhanced after addition of 0.6 wt. % Gr (Gr0.6-ZRP). In addition, the cathodic protection property of the Gr0.6-ZRP was characterized quantitatively by localized electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (LEIS) in the presence of an artificial scratch on the coating. The results demonstrate that moderate amounts of single-layer graphene can significantly improve corrosion resistance of ZRP, due to the barrier protection and cathodic protection effects.Keywords:graphene;zinc-rich epoxy primer;cathodic protection;localized electrochemical impedance spectroscopy

The mechanism of polyaniline-grafted Graphene (PANI-Gr) nanosheets on the corrosion performance of zinc-rich epoxy primer (ZRP) coatings was studied. Highly crystalline PANI nanosheets were chemically synthesized on the modified Gr nanosheets and analyzed using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM). Different from the whole coating measurements via the open circuit potential and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements, herein, we focused on the corrosive characteristics at defect areas. Potential changes of the artificial defect-included samples and localized EIS of the defect area were conducted, to investigate the impact of the PANI-Gr fragments on corrosion process. The electrochemical results indicated that a mixture of Gr at a content of 0.6% enhanced the sacrificial cathodic protection of ZRP coating due to extending its active sacrificial period. Further, the most pronounced improvement in the ZRP properties was obtained through PANI-Gr modification. A synergetic enhancement of the coating physical barrier and zinc sacrificial cathodic protection was obtained in the case of ZRP including PANI-Gr nanosheets. Thus, this study suggests a new strategy for simultaneously providing the enhanced cathodic and barrier protection activities for ZRP.

Ultrasonic technology has drawn extensive interests for its great potential in marine antifouling applications. However, its effects on the adhesion behavior of marine fouling organisms on marine structures remain underexplored. This work investigated how ultrasonic treatment impacted the adhesion ofPseudoalteromonason a gel-like marine epoxy primer. And the process parameters for ultrasonic treatment were optimized using response surface analysis with Design-Expert software 11. The results revealed that ultrasonic treatment disrupted the cellular structure ofPseudoalteromonas, causing the deformation and fragmentation of the cell membrane, leading to bacterial death. Additionally, ultrasonic treatment reduced the particle size and Zeta potential value ofPseudoalteromonas, which disrupted the stability of bacterial suspensions. It also increased the relative surface hydrophobicity ofPseudoalteromonascells, resulting in a reduction in adhesion to the gel-like marine epoxy primer. This study demonstrated that ultrasonic treatment significantly disturbed the adhesion behavior of microorganisms likePseudoalteromonason the gel-like marine epoxy primer, which provided an effective approach for controlling marine biofouling.

This study investigates the interlayer bonding mechanism between epoxy primers and polyurethane topcoats commonly used in marine coatings. Previous studies have focused on the physical bonding between the coatings, but this study focused on the theory of chemical bonding. Using E-44 and HP2000 as primers and MDI toluene solution to simulate a polyurethane topcoat, the changes in the molecular structure at the interface between the epoxy primer and the polyurethane topcoat after curing were revealed by sum-frequency vibrational spectroscopy (SFG) technique. The experiments showed that the hydroxyl (-OH) signals on the surface of the epoxy primer disappeared after contacting with the MDI solution, and the isocyanate (-NCO) and carbonyl (C=O) signals on the urethane topcoat were revealed, suggesting that a chemical reaction occurred between them. The results of SFG analysis were further supported by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. It was found that chemical bonding had a positive effect on the macroscopic properties of the coatings, indicating that the interlayer bonding between the primer and the topcoat could be significantly enhanced by chemical bonding, which provides new theoretical support for the interlayer bonding of the coating support system for marine environment.
