The preparation of multifunctional nacre-like hybrid films is reported in this article. The copper ions (Cu2+) were introduced into the hybrid films assembled from fluorescent hyperbranched poly(amido amine) (HPAMAM) and clay nanosheets. The “brick and mortar” structure of the hybrid films was proved by the SEM observation and SAXD detection. Due to the strong interactions among the Cu2+ ions and the HPAMAM molecules, the obtained hybrid films showed enormously improved ultimate strength. At the same time, the elongation at break of the Cu2+ modified hybrid films was more than that of the pristine one too. Furthermore, the Cu2+ ions modified hybrid films showed excellent inhibition on the bacterial growth due to the good antibacterial property of the Cu2+. Under UV irradiation, the hybrid films modified with Cu2+ could also emit strong blue fluorescence. We wish this multifunctional nacre-like hybrid film could provide a promising material for biological applications.

Marine molluscs have inspired to construct robust composites with hierarchical microstructures, and also to design artificial muscles with rapid and controllable deformation. Abalone nacre has the unique “brick and mortar” structure, whose two-dimensional (2D) “mortar” can serve both as the strong adhesive between aragonite platelets and as the raw material for organic and carbon nanomeshes applicable in a soft ionic actuator. Through an optimal production procedure, carbon nanomeshes with abundant micropores (0.7–2 nm) and in-plane mesopores (9–13 nm) are produced in a high yield. When incorporated into the actuator electrodes, their large surface area (>625 m2 g−1) and heteroatom doping (>7.5%) ensure to offer large ion storage desired by large deformation. Their in-plane mesopores allow for ion penetration desired by fast actuating kinetics, in contrast to graphene nanosheets that block free ion transportation. The resultant ionic actuator shows a low driving voltage (≤3 V), large deformation strain difference (1.11%), fast actuation (100 s) and air working durability (>104 cycles), being superior to the actuators based on other 2D carbon nanomaterials. Thus, this low-cost and scalable production of carbon nanomeshes offers not only a novel type of biomass-based carbon nanomaterials but also a high-performance electrochemical actuator applicable in soft robotics and smart devices.

Nacre is characterized by its excellent mechanical performance due to the well-recognized “brick and mortar” structure. Many efforts have been applied to make nacre-mimicking materials, but it is still a big challenge to realize their continuous production. Here, we prepared sandwich-like building blocks of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)-coated graphene, and achieved high-nanofiller-content kilometers-long fibers by continuous wet-spinning assembly technology. The fibers have a strict “brick and mortar” layered structure, with graphene sheet as rigid brick and PVA as soft mortar. The mortar thickness can be precisely tuned from 2.01 to 3.31 nm by the weight feed ratio of PVA to graphene, as demonstrated by both atomic force microscopy and X-ray diffraction measurements. The mechanical strength of the nacre-mimicking fibers increases with increasing the content of PVA, and it rises gradually from 81 MPa for the fiber with 53.1 wt% PVA to 161 MPa for the fiber with 65.8 wt% PVA. The mechanical performance of our fibers was independent of the molecular weight (MW) of PVA in the wide range of 2–100 kDa, indicating that low MW polymers can also be used to make strong nanocomposites. The tensile stress of fibers immersed in PVA 5 wt% solution reached ca. 200 MPa, surpassing the values of nacre and most of other nacre-mimicking materials. The nacre-mimicking fibers are highly electrically conductive (∼350 S m−1) after immersing in hydroiodic acid, enabling them to connect a circuit to illuminate an LED lamp.

It is critically desired to integrate high in-plane thermal conductivity (TC) and distinguished electric insulation for thermal conductive film in modern electronic devices. Herein, integration of high TC and electric insulation in sandwich-like BNNSs@MWCNTs/PEI (S-BNNSs@MWCNTs/PEI) composite film has been successfully achieved by layer-by-layer spin coating and hot pressing inspired by highly ordered structure of natural nacre . The covalently bonded connections between BNNSs and MWCNTs are beneficial to create more efficient heat conduction path, which can partly decrease the interfacial thermal resistance and phonon scattering. The resultant S-BNNSs@MWCNTs/PEI composite films possess a high in-plane TC of 6.88 W m −1 K −1 . Meantime, benefiting from the alternating multilayer structure, the composite films exhibit satisfactory reliable dielectric performances with flexibility, which shows great potential in ceramics-filled polymer composite TIMs.

Mimicking the hierarchical brick-and-mortar architecture of natural nacre provides great opportunities for the design and synthesis of multifunctional artificial materials. The crucial challenge to push nacre-mimetic functional materials toward practical applications is to achieve ample ductility, toughness, and folding endurance with simultaneously maintaining high-level functional properties. In this study, the microstructure of nacre-mimetics is reformed through predesigning a 3D nanofiber network to replace conventional polymer matrices. A unique sol–gel–film transformation approach is developed to fabricate a graphene-based artificial nacre containing a preforming 3D, interconnective, inhomogeneous poly(p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) nanofiber network. The fabulous coupling of the extensive sliding of graphene nanoplatelets and intensive stretching of the 3D nanofiber network over a large scale enables the artificial nacre to display natural nacre-like deformation behavior, achieving ultralarge strain-to-failure (close to 35%), unprecedented toughness (close to 50 MJ m −3 ), and fold endurance (no decrease in tensile properties after folding for 10 000 times or folding at increasing stress). The new levels of ductility, toughness, and folding endurance are integrated with outstanding thermal properties, including thermal conductivity (≈130 W m −1 K −1 ), thermal stability (520 °C) and nonflammability, rendering the lightweight nacre-mimetics promising in flexible electronic devices, particularly for aerospace electronics.

In extreme environments, it is difficult to balance the strength and toughness of ultra-thin film materials. To address this problem, we propose a promising strategy to build ultra strong, tough and extreme environments resistant Poly(p-phenylene-2,6-benzobisoxazole) (PBO) papers with a nacre-like structure constructed by synergistic electrostatic interaction and interlayer entanglement through the sol–gel-film method and hot press orientation. Highly interconnected PBO nanofibres (PNFs) with positive charges are tightly wound around the anisotropic graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets with negative charges through strong electrostatic interaction, forming a nacre like microstructure. The addition of Fe (Ⅲ) can form a coordination bond with the amino group on PNFs. Chemical crosslinking and hydrogen bonding synergize with interlayer entanglement effect among different PNFs,which can effectively dissipate interlayer energy and alleviate the conflict between strength and toughness. The resultant tensile strength and toughness are as high as 338.3 MPa and 16.04 MJ/m 3 ,which are 197.7 % and 425.4 % of those of the intrinsic PBO paper, respectively. Additionally, after 5000 folding-unfolding cycles, the tensile strength retention and toughness retention of the PBO/GO/Fe (PGFe) paper were still 85.4 % and 71.9 %, respectively. Moreover, the paper exhibits excellent tolerance to extreme temperature environments and showed extremely strong chemical stability.

Superwetting membranes have considerable potentials in the field of water treatment, especially for oil-water separation, however it still keeps great challenges to prepare ones with high mechanical property and strong interfacial cohesion strength . Herein, inspired by high hardness yet toughness of natural nacre , we proposed a polyphenol-mediated inner-outer through type modification strategy to fabricate ultrathin coordination-crosslinked nacre-inspired hydrogel superwetting membranes (named PVDF/GPT/Fe), using 2D graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets , flexible polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and branched structure tannic acid (TA) as the assembly units, and Fe 3+ ion as the cross-linking agent. It is found that PVA-TA interface assembly is key to realize the inner-outer through type hydrophilic modification for the hydrophobic PVDF membrane, to achieve superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity with the UOCAs of above 150°, ultra-low oil-adhesion and self-cleaning property, with a high flux recovery ratio of 96.3 % after six cycles. The PVDF/GPT/Fe membrane exhibits the boosted mechanical strength and damage resistance, with the Young's modulus of up to 1076 MPa, which is enhanced by 4.4 times, compared to the pristine PVDF membrane, benefiting from the formation of the layered brick-and-mortar structured nacre-inspired hydrogel coating and strong bonding strength of the interfaces between the base membrane and the top coating layer. The separation efficiencies of the PVDF/GPT/Fe membrane for various oil-in-water emulsions are higher than 99.5 % and the largest emulsion permeance is 611.2 L m-2 h-1 bar-1. Our research extends the path route to design and manufacture novel biomimetic superwetting membranes with high mechanical strength and durability.

In this article, a simple strategy was employed to fabricate bioinspired hybrid composite with carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), graphene oxide, and reduced graphene oxide/alumina (rGO/Al) by a facile solution casting method. The tensile strength and toughness of rGO/Al-CMC-GO can reach 586.6 ± 12 MPa, 12.1 ± 0.44 MJm–3, respectively, due to the interface strengthening of alumina, which is 1.43 and 12 times higher than steel and about 4.3 and 6.7 times that of nature nacre. The artificial nacre hybrid composite is conductive due to the introduction of rGO/Al on the surface. Interestingly this structure can also be coated on the surface of cotton thread to give the thread good mechanical performance and conductivity. Additionally, the artificial nacre has better fire shielding and gas barrier properties. The oxygen permeability (OP) for 1% rGO/Al-CMC decreased from 0.0265 to 0.003 mLμm m–2 day–1 kpa–1, the water vapor permeability (WVP) decreased from 0.363 to 0.205 gmmm–2 day–1 kpa–1 when the concentration increased from 1% rGO/Al to 6% rGO/Al. It is believed this work provided a simple and feasible strategy to fabricate ultrastrong and ultratough graphene-based artificial nacre multifunctional materials.

How to efficiently utilize fast-growing timber to create sustainable materials with excellent mechanical properties is important for resource utilization and environmental protection. Here, a simple yet efficient approach to construct cellulose-based sustainable materials through robust and effective microscopic interface design inspired by nacre was developed. A 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-piperidinyloxy (TEMPO) -oxidized wood after delignification and TEMPO-oxidation as the “brick”, then impregnated it with PVA as the “mortar”, and added borax as the cross-linking agent. This matrix was hot-presseed to produce a borax and PVA reinforced TEMPO-oxidized wood (BPTW) with “brick and mortar” structure, synergistically reinforced through hydrogen and covalent bonding. The results show that the BPTW has higher tensile strength (234 MPa), higher flexural strength (224 MPa), better thermal stability, flame retardancy, and water resistance compared to natural wood. Additionally, the entire process does not involve the use of adhesives, which reduces energy consumption and provides a methods for producing a lightweight, high-strength,and large-scale sustainable material.

The fabrication of composites with nacre-like structures through the ordered integration of ceramics and organic components represents an effective approach to developing high strength and toughness bone implant materials. Traditional preparation methods typically involve high-temperature sintering followed by the infiltration of organic substances. While these methods can achieve high strength, the uniformity and depth of organic substance penetration into the ceramic matrix were constrained by pore size, leading to an uneven distribution. Additionally, the interface bonding between the organic and ceramics was limited to physical bonding, which restricts the enhancement of fracture toughness. In this study, nacre-mimetic hydroxyapatite (HA)-Calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 )/sodium alginate (SA) layered composites were fabricated utilizing a combination of roll rolling and the sinterless characteristics of calcium phosphate bone cement (CPC). The SA contains oxygen groups that form bonds with Ca 2+ in the HA layer. The bending strength of nacre-mimetic HA-CaCO 3 /SA layered composites can achieve 9.04 MPa, which was comparable to that of human trabecular bone. Repeated roll rolling lead to a lamellar dispersion of SA in the composite, with an average thickness of 0.19 μm. The fracture toughness of the layered composite was 13.89 MPa m 1/2 , which was higher than that of cortical bone due to deflection extension path of the crack under bending stress, crack passivation, crack bifurcation and crack bridging. The layered composites exhibit excellent biocompatibility, promoting the proliferation and adhesion of osteoblasts. This characteristic was crucial for developing bone implant materials that match both the mechanical and biological properties of human bones.

Matrix proteins play critical roles in regulating the prismatic and nacreous layer formation in the shell. However, due to the dearth of in vivo experiments, their specific roles during shell formation are still unclear. In this study, a new method to detect the content of Sr in the nacreous layer (DCSr-NL), which can semiquantitatively measure the nacreous growth rate, has been proposed. In vitro experiments show that during in vitro crystallization, the Sr element can replace Ca partially, resulting in isomorphism. In vivo experiments show that the best labeling conditions are when the Sr/Ca in seawater is 0.3, at 24 °C, and at 4 days of culture. Although a surface morphological difference in the inner layer of nacre is seldom detected by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), knockdown of the classical gene nacrein or unknown gene NU9, combined with DCSr-NL, shows that both significantly decrease the nacreous layer formation rate. The knockdown of the classical gene Pif177 or unknown genes NU3 or MRPN affects the surface morphology and decreases the nacreous layer formation rate. In general, thanks to DCSr-NL, we can efficiently analyze the growth rate of the nacre with or without morphological changes by SEM, and it is of considerable significance for exploring the target gene’s function in forming the nacre in vivo.

The leakage of offshore crude oil and the discharge of industrial oily wastewater always bring great harm to human health and ecological environment. To solve these problems, advanced interfacial materials for oil–water separation have attracted wide attentions. However, most of these materials still have several disadvantages including complicated preparation process, low separation efficiency, and easy damage. Herein, a nacre-inspired biomineralized mesh (NBM) with underwater superoleophobicity shows scalable and robust oil–water separation with high efficiency. Through the combination of dip coating and biomineralization, the NBM is readily scalable fabrication. Similar chemical components and micro-nanostructures to the natural nacre endow the NBM with good mechanical properties. Furthermore, the NBM can resist to sand impingement and knife scratch along high efficiency of oil–water separation (≈99.9%) even after repeated use for 50 times, which may come from its high hardness and Young's modulus. Therefore, this study provides new insights for the scalable development of oil–water separation materials with high efficiency and robustness.
