Evaluation of floral-derived volatile blend for attracting aphid parasitoids and lady beetles in the tobacco fields

Shaolong Wu,Fengli Liu,Weiai Zeng,Zhipeng Xiao,Jiaying Li,Kai Teng,Qianshaung Guo,Jinhao Zhao,Yongjun Du

In tobacco planting in China, the artificial release of aphid parasitoids Aphidius gifuensis has been applied to control aphids for a decade. However, due to seasonal effects and crop rotation, the sustainability of releasing parasitoids and the aphid control efficacy have not been properly evaluated. In this study, effective semiochemical-based attractants were further screened and optimized in the tobacco fields. Film lures were developed to release the synthetic attractant blends. In tobacco planting fields, the synthetic mixture of β-pinene, methyl salicylate , linalool , and limonene(6:6:2:20 mg) significantly increased the population of natural enemies, including A. gifuensis and ladybeetles ( Coccinella septempunctata , Harmonia axyridis and Hippodamia variegate ) monitored using using malaise traps. The increase in the natural enemy population was related to the season and the lure placement density in the tobacco fields, as well as the distribution of surrounding habitats and flowering plants. A density of 135 lures per hectare significantly increased the number of parasitoids, reduced the population of aphids, elevated the rate of parasitized aphids by 42%, and effectively suppressed the aphid population in the tobacco fields. Combined with the protection of flowering plants around tobacco fields, synthetic lures may provide a technical measure for conservative biological control.

Tortoise beetle-inspired sustainable films with tunable properties based on on-demand embedding and release of functional microspheres

Qiong Duan,Lin Lin,Yue Liu,Xinlong Tang,Liang Fang,Chunhua Lu,Zhongzi Xu

Inspired by tortoise beetle, a novel method for preparing sustainable films, leveraging the on-demand embedding or release behavior of the functional fillers to impart or eliminate functions to the film is reported. The microscopic shape-memory behavior of the film surface was characterized using microscopy techniques and finite-element analysis to investigate the embedding and release of single micro-/nanospheres on the film surface, which were affected by sphere diameters and programming temperatures. By utilizing different functional fillers and distribution densities, the transformation and tunability of film properties such as optical reflection and fluorescence was demonstrated. Different functions of the film were altered through multiple cycles, showcasing the ability to immobilize patterns, step-wise release, recycle materials and create temperature-sensitive anticounterfeiting codes and decoration on objects. This approach offers a promising avenue for developing sustainable films with tunable functions and highlights the potential for recycling functional fillers, contributing to both environmental sustainability and material reusability.

Development of lady beetle attractants from floral volatiles and other semiochemicals for the biological control of aphids

Jinhao Zhao,Zhongyan Wang,Zhongshan Li,Jiayu Shi,Ling Meng,Guorong Wang,Jingli Cheng,Yongjun Du

Aphids are among the most destructive phytophagous pests of host plants, because of their rapid reproduction, parthenogenesis, extensive crop damage, and the transmission of many plant viruses. Since lady beetles are important predatory natural enemies of aphids, developing lady beetle attractants to increase their field abundance is vital for aphid control. Floral volatiles and other semiochemicals are reportedly attractive to lady beetles. In this research, a total of 58 floral volatiles were tested by Y-tube olfactometer assays, among which 29 were highly attractive to both Harmonia axyridis (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) and Coccinella septempunctata (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae). Meanwhile, the results of wind tunnel trials showed that only isoamyl acetate, α -humulene, trans -3-hexen-1-ol, methyl salicylate, and β -pinene lure these two species. Thereafter, 15 semiochemicals from pests, natural enemies, and pest-infested crops were mixed with the selected floral volatiles, to determine optimum formulations for attracting lady beetles through wind tunnels and further field trials. Eventually, formulas (1) α -humulene: β -pinene: methyl salicylate: trans -3-hexen-1-ol = 1:3:3:10; (5) α -humulene: β -pinene: methyl salicylate:1-nonanal = 1:3:3:10; (8) α -humulene: β -pinene: methyl salicylate: indole = 1:3:3:10 ( 1 , 5 , and 8 are labels used for the various formulations in field trials) were successfully verified to be attractive to lady beetles in both pumpkin and wheat fields. These formulations will be of great significance in developing integrated pest management strategies for aphid control.

Acaricidal activity of Cinnamomum cassia (Chinese cinnamon) against the tick Haemaphysalis longicornis is linked to its content of (E)-cinnamaldehyde

Nwanade Chuks F.,Wang Min,Wang Tianhong,Zhang Xiaoyu,Wang Can,Yu Zhijun,Liu Jingze

Background The tick Haemaphysalis longicornis (Neumann) is a well-known vector of numerous pathogens of veterinary and medical importance. Various control strategies, including the use of synthetic pesticides, have been developed to control this tick species. However, demand for effective and safe alternative pesticides is increasing due to the adverse effects associated with the intensive and injudicious use of synthetic pesticides, which include undesirable effects on non-target species and environmental pollution. Hence, the acaricidal activity of the extract and the essential oil of Cinnamomum cassia (Chinese cinnamon) and their major components, and the underlying mechanisms of this activity, were evaluated against unfed larvae and nymphs of H . longicornis . Methods The components of the extract and essential oil of C. cassia were determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and their larvicidal and nymphicidal activity were evaluated using the larval and nymphal packet test. The underlying detoxification mechanism was elucidated by targeting in vivo esterase and monooxygenase activity, and the toxicological effect was assessed on non-target Tenebrio molitor and Harmonia axyridis by topical application in open Petri dishes. Results ( E )-cinnamaldehyde was the predominant component of the extract (50.79%) and essential oil (89.95%). The 50% lethal concentration (LC 50 ) for larvae and nymphs treated with the extract was 11.56 and 49.18 mg/mL, respectively. The essential oil, ( E )-cinnamaldehyde and fenvalerate exhibited acaricidal activity, with LC 50 values of 3.81, 3.15, and 0.14 mg/mL, respectively, against the larvae, and 21.31, 16.93, and 1.89 mg/mL, respectively, against the nymphs. ( E )-cinnamaldehyde significantly increased esterase and monooxygenase activity in both larvae and nymphs. Unlike fenvalerate, C . cassia essential oil and ( E )-cinnamaldehyde did not cause mortality of T . molitor or H . axyridis adults. Conclusions This study demonstrates that C . cassia essential oil and ( E )-cinnamaldehyde have the potential to be developed into botanical-based larvicidal and nymphicidal agents for tick control. Combined application of surfactants and iron-based metal–organic framework nanoparticles for targeted delivery of insecticides

Huiya Chen,Liupeng Yang,Peiqi Wu,Pengpeng Liu,Hanhong Xu,Zhixiang Zhang

With the development of smart delivery systems for pesticides, many studies revealed that nanodelivery methods have great potential for use in efficient and sustainable agriculture; however, field application of the nanopesticides is still a challenge. In this study, the application of a chlorfenapyr (CF)-loaded iron-based metal–organic framework (CF@MIL-101-SL) to maize and its control efficacy for Spodoptera frugiperda were investigated in detail. The results showed that, compared with a suspension concentrate of CF (CF-SC), a solution of CF@MIL-101-SL with the surfactant aerosol OT exhibited excellent wetting, deposition and adhesion with maize leaves. The CF@MIL-101-SL NPs exhibited bidirectional translocation in maize, which significantly enhanced the transport of CF to the target tissues. Field trials revealed that CF@MIL-101-SL maintained > 75 % control efficiency after 21 d of spraying, indicating significantly greater insecticidal activity and persistence than CF-SC. Spray application of CF@MIL-101-SL gave high initial deposition rates, long half-lives on tender and old leaves and significantly reduced pesticide drift into the environment. Based on a biosafety assessment, spraying with CF@MIL-101-SL reduced the negative effects of CF on plants during the growth period. In addition, CF@MIL-101-SL increased the survival rate of Harmonia axyridis larvae and reduced the impacts of CF on the growth and intestinal damage of Harmonia axyridis . In summary, these results highlight the advantages of metal–organic framework delivery systems for multidimensional enhancement of pesticide efficacy, persistence, and safety and provide data on field application and the environmental risks of nanodelivery systems.
