Sweet sorghum stalks can be utilized for the preparation of carbon materials, which can then be applied as negative electrode materials in lead–carbon batteries. In this study, sweet sorghum stalks were pretreated with 5 wt.% H 3 PO 4 and subsequently carbonized at 550 °C for 105 min. Subsequently, the electrochemical properties of lead-coated sorghum stalk–based carbon materials, prepared under varying reduction durations, were investigated through EIS and CV tests. On this basis, the negative electrode materials, which consisted of the lead-coated sorghum stalk–based carbon material (under the reduction time of 45 min) and physically ground comparison materials, were assembled into simulated lead–carbon batteries. The charge–discharge performance of these batteries was evaluated using a charge–discharge tester. The initial discharge capacities of the two materials were 73.0 mAh/g and 57.24 mAh/g, respectively. After 150 cycles, the capacity retention ratios were 71.8% and 57.5%, respectively. These results indicate that the simulated lead–carbon battery with the newly prepared carbon material exhibits superior electrochemical performance.

As a nonfood crop, sweet sorghum has been extensively utilized for sugar production and biomass energy conversion. However, industrial production generates a significant amount of sweet sorghum skin. Although paper and cellulose-based films are commonly prepared through a bottom-up approach to capitalize on their abundant cellulose content. The bottom-up approach often involves the use of substantial quantities of chemical reagents, thereby posing a serious threat to environmental safety. In this study, inspired by the arrangement of traditional Chinese house roof tiles, we employed a stacking and hot-pressing preparation strategy to transform sweet sorghum skins into flexible sweet sorghum films (SF). SF retained the high degree of orientation of cellulose while obtaining high strength and toughness along with excellent light transmission properties. In particular, the mechanical properties of SF in the direction parallel to the fibers are exceptionally remarkable. The tensile strength measured 796.4 MPa, while the toughness stands at 7.63 MJ/m3. Additionally, SF exhibited outstanding optical characteristics, boasting a remarkable light transmission of 78% and a haze of 60%. Moreover, we established the feasibility of utilizing SF as a functional material for various applications, showcasing its potential for optical management, smart wearables, and electronic devices. Importantly, the successful preparation of large-size SF unlocked possibilities for their widespread and large-scale utilization, thus making a valuable contribution to environmental sustainability.

Two-dimensional (2D) sheet-like biochar as promising alternatives to graphene nanosheets has gained significant attention in materials science while being highly restricted by its complicated synthetic steps. In this study, the dimethyl sulfoxide/potassium hydroxide (DMSO/KOH) superbase system was first used to pretreat sweet sorghum residues (SS) and then carbonized to prepare sheet-like biochar. Ascribing to the strong nucleophilicity of DMSO/KOH, a synergistic effect was achieved by partially removing non-cellulosic components in SS and swelling the amorphous region of cellulose, leaving more layered cellulose behind (∼46.5 wt %), which was favorable for the formation of 2D biochar nanosheets with high graphitization degrees (∼93.1%). This strategy was also suitable for other biomass fibers (e.g., straw, wood powders, and nuclear shells) to obtain sheet-like biochar. The resulting sheet-like biochar could be compounded with cellulose nanofibers to achieve the structural design of composites and solve the molding problem of biochar, which was beneficial for dyeing wastewater treatment. Thus, this work provides insight into a simple strategy for developing 2D ultrathin sheet-like biochar from sustainable biomass wastes.

Background Sweet sorghum ( Sorghum bicolo r (L.) Moench) is a popular forage crop in arid and semi-arid areas due to its high drought tolerance, rapid growth, and low production costs. In addition, sweet sorghum, has relatively specific ensiling characteristics because of its high moisture content and sufficient amount of water soluble carbohydrates. Therefore, it is crucial to investigate the raw material characteristics and exogenous additive pretreatment for the regulation of silage quality. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of Lactobacillus plantarum (LP) and cellulase (CEL) on the fermentation profile, carbohydrate composition, in vitro rumen fermentation and microbiota communities of sweet sorghum silages with two different raw material characteristics (fresh sweet sorghum material (MC1); sweet sorghum material wilted outdoors for 6 h after chopping (MC2)). Results In this study, the sweet sorghum treatments were: control (without additives), LP, CEL, or a combination of LP and CEL (LP_CEL). All treated sweet sorghum samples were ensiled for 30 d. A higher content of lactic acid, propionic acid, D-fructose, glucose, sucrose and a lower content of structural carbohydrates were observed in MC1 silage than in MC2 silage. In MC2 silage, the addition of CEL or LP_CEL decreased the content of structural carbohydrates, while it increased the content of D-fructose, glucose, D-arabinose, xylitol, maltose and trehalose ( P < 0.05). The in vitro gas production at 48 h was greater in MC1 silage than in MC2 silage, and the addition of CEL or LP_CEL increased the in vitro dry matter digestibility in MC2 silage ( P < 0.05). After 30 d of ensiling, disaccharides such as sucrose, maltose and alginate were almost entirely utilized by the microorganisms, while more-consumed monosaccharides included D-fructose, glucose and L-rhamnose. Lactobacillus was the dominant genus (> 80% relative abundance) in all silage samples. Conclusions Raw material characteristics determine carbohydrate composition, in vitro digestibility, and microbial community of sweet sorghum silage. For wilted sweet sorghum with relatively low moisture content, pretreatment with CEL or LP_CEL reduced the structural carbohydrate content, increased the nonstructural carbohydrate content, and improved the digestibility of the silage. However, additives had no obvious impact on enhancing the fermentation quality of sweet sorghum silage for two raw material characteristics. Graphical abstract

Sweet sorghum ( Sorghum bicolor Moench) seedling emergence and growth are significantly impeded by physical soil crusts (PSCs) in saline-alkaline soils. Abscisic acid (ABA) is a potent seed priming agent known for modulating plant physiological and metabolic responses under salinity stress. However, the influence of ABA priming on seedling emergence in PSCs remains unclear. This study conducted both pot and field experiment to examine the effects of ABA priming on enhancing seedling emergence under PSC conditions. ABA priming altered the balance of at least 24 endogenous phytohormones, including abscisic acid, jasmonic acid, gibberellins, ethylene, auxins, and cytokinins. Additionally, it reprogrammed starch and sucrose metabolism, resulting in the differential expression of genes encoding key enzymes such as AMY, BAM, and INV, which are crucial for converting complex sugars into readily available energy sources, thereby supporting seedling growth. Furthermore, 52 differentially expressed metabolites (DEMs) of flavonoids were identified in germinating seedlings, including 15 anthocyanins, 3 flavones, 7 flavonols, 6 isoflavones, 7 flavanones, and 14 other flavonoids. Genetic and metabolic co-expression network analysis, along with flavonoid biosynthesis pathway exploration, revealed that the biosynthesis of 17 key DEMs—including liquiritigenin, apigenin, kaempferide, syringetin, phloretin, formononetin, dihydrokaempferol, and xanthohumol—was regulated by 10 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) associated with flavonoid biosynthesis. These DEGs encoded 7 enzymes critical for this pathway, including chalcone synthase, shikimate O-hydroxycinnamoyltransferase, bifunctional dihydroflavonol 4-reductase, naringenin 7-O-methyltransferase, and anthocyanidin reductase. This regulation, along with reduced levels of superoxide anion (O 2 − ) and malondialdehyde and increased antioxidant enzyme activities, suggested that flavonoids played a vital role in mitigating oxidative stress. These findings demonstrate that ABA priming can effectively enhance sweet sorghum seedling emergence in PSCs by accelerating emergence and boosting stress resistance.
