Most conventional plastic wraps for food packing and preservation have limited flexibility and relatively unique functions, seriously limiting their practical uses. However, smart and sustainable polyethylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate (PEF) polyester is currently employed for construction composite films to overcome this limitation. Herein, the fabrication of bio-based PEF/carboxylated cellulose nanofibers (CCNFs) blends films using PEF and CCNFs by a simple method involving layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly polymerization with exceptional mechanical and interfacial properties. In particular, the mechanical results revealed that the CP3 (1.0 wt% CCNFs) composite film had excellent mechanical properties like tensile strength (69.0 MPa), Young’s modulus (4.3 GPa), and toughness (1.26 MJ/m3), which is markedly higher than that of pure PEF film. Besides, the barrier results also demonstrated that CP3 blend film reduced the CO 2 and O 2 barriers by 13.4% and 11.2%, respectively, compared to pure PEF film. Consequently, FTIR, XPS, SEM/EDS, and AFM characterizations provide insight into the chemical composition, elemental distribution, morphology, and structural properties of CCNF that directly affect the PEF/CCNF composite. Notably, the barrier properties and fruit experiments revealed CP3 composite film, and the shelf life of fresh mangoes was extended by at least one week under ambient conditions (i.e., a relative humidity of 90–95%, a temperature of 30 °C, and natural light). These results indicate the practical use of CP3 composite film as a food packaging in next-generation, well-coated preservation films.

Poly(1,4-butylene- co -1,4-cyclohexanedimethylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate) (PBCFs) was synthesized from bio-based 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), 1,4-butanediol (BDO) and 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol (CHDM). The GPC showed that the number average molecular weight ( M n ) of PBCFs were in the range of 38400–44200 g/mol and the average molecular weight ( M w ) varied from 83,000 to 94,800 g/mol with the polydispersity index of 2.22–2.33. The chemical structures, compositions and sequence distributions of PBCFs were confirmed by 1 H NMR and 13 C NMR. Their thermal properties and crystallization behavior were investigated by Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC). Results showed that the glass transition temperature ( T g ) and melting temperature ( T m ) of poly(butylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate) (PBF) were increased from 38 and 171.8 °C to 65.8 and 211.7 °C for PBCF-68, respectively. Furthermore, the strength and modulus were increased from 44 and 950 MPa for PBF to 69 and 1360 MPa for PBCF-68 with the mole percentage of CHDM units of 68% in diol units. PBCFs demonstrated much better thermo-mechanical properties when compared with those of PBF, which might be used as the bio-based engineering plastic or excellent packaging materials with high transparency and good gas barrier properties.

The utilization of biobased resources presents a novel approach for the development of high-performance plasticizers with exceptional flexibility. Nevertheless, the combustibility of flexible poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) products containing high content plasticizers is frequently disregarded. The development of PVC functional plasticizers requires careful consideration of a good balance between flame retardancy, migration resistance and plasticity through molecular structure design. Currently there is a dearth of biobased plasticizers that exhibit exceptional comprehensive properties. Therefore, a novel biobased flame-retardant plasticizer (VA8-P) has been synthesized from vanillic acid and fully characterized using NMR, IR and MS. The VA8-P plasticized PVC exhibits a lower glass transition temperature and higher low temperature resistance, while its elongation at break is 1141.6% higher than unmodified PVC. Transmittance, haze, cross-sectional SEM and 2D/3D AFM all demonstrate its good optical properties and the compatibility of the plasticizer with polymer matrix. PVC plasticized using VA8-P exhibits better hydrophilicity and especially superior migration resistance than does the same polymer plasticized using DOP. The thermal stability and char residue rate for decomposition of VA8-P plasticized PVC are better than the same parameter of material plasticized with DOP. In cone calorimeter tests, VA8-P plasticized PVC showed excellent heat barrier effect. Additionally, PVC-P3 reached the UL-94 VTM-0 level in the vertical burning test. Its flame-retardant mode of action was also verified by TGA–FTIR analysis. A functional biobased plasticizer with excellent comprehensive properties has been synthesized. This material exhibits greater flexibility than many traditional flame-retardant additives and its use can be expected to improve the fire resistance of flexible PVC.

Bio-based plastics have received much attraction because they are an alternative to petroleum-based plastics in recent years. Among them, aliphatic polyesters have garnered the most attention due to their excellent properties. Polyester is primarily synthesized through ring opening polymerization of monomer, and the catalysts used are mostly synthesized through “click” reaction in the laboratory, which exhibits inferior activity and little commercial value. Herein, a facile approach was developed for the synthesis of high molecular-weight cyclic aliphatic polyesters, specifically poly(valerolactone- co -caprolactone) with varying compositions. This involved the ring-opening copolymerization of ε-caprolactone (ε-CL) and δ-valerolactone (δ-VL) in the absence of an initiator with commercial hydrogen bond donor triclorocarban and an organic base. The structure and properties of the prepared cyclic polyester were investigated using GPC, 13 C NMR, 1 H NMR, MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, TOF-SIMS mass spectrometry, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. The results show that the molecular weight of cyclic polyester can rapidly exceed 40 kDa, with a PDI of approximately 1.10. In comparison to linear polyester, it has a higher melting point and superior thermodynamic properties, thus presenting greater application potential. Finally, based on nuclear magnetic resonance titration, the potential catalytic processes and mechanisms of bimolecular systems on monomers in different environments were discussed. This study not only offers new insights into the structure and properties of cyclic polyesters, but also presents novel bimolecular catalytic systems using commercial urea hydrogen bond donors for the synthesis of cyclic polymer polyesters.

A novel green plasticizer, cyclohexyl ester-capped glutaric acid oligomeric lactate (CGOL) with many poly(lactic acid) (PLA) matrix repeating units, applicable for plasticizing both poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) and PLA, was designed and developed through a two-step esterification reaction route. Due to the growing concerns about the environment and health, we used biobased raw materials to synthesize the biobased plasticizer with the hope of potentially replacing petroleum-based plasticizers that are already widely used. The molecular structure of CGOL was confirmed, and then CGOL was blended with PVC or PLA for performance testing. Compared with commercial plasticizers, it had better comprehensive plasticization performance, showing high thermal stability, mechanical stability, and migration stability in both PVC and PLA polymers, which could be demonstrated by thermogravimetric analysis, tensile tests, and migration resistance test results. Among all PVC blends containing 50 phr plasticizer, CGOL plasticized PVC films exhibited the highest elongation at break (736.3%) and initial degradation temperature (Ti, CGOL-50 = 273.5 °C), the lowest glass transition temperature (Tg = 24.8 °C), and minimal migration in various environments, better than that of commercial ATBC, DOTP, and DOP. As for PLA blends, CGOL plasticized PLA films outperformed PLA/ATBC films in terms of comprehensive performance. Overall, CGOL demonstrated potential as a novel green substitute plasticizer for preparing flexible products of PVC and PLA.

Ongoing innovation in bio-based plastics aims to meet more economical and diverse societal needs. However, the dependence on a single biomass source and the generally inadequate wet stability and moisture mechanical properties of traditional bio-based plastics severely limit their competitiveness. We have developed a high mechanical performance, fully bio-based, thermoset in-suit plastic from an almost worthless agricultural and forestry waste (eucalyptus) through a simple and environmentally friendly deconstruction-reconstruction strategy. In this process, the hydrogen and covalent bonds in the lignin and cellulose of eucalyptus are broken and then reorganised through dynamic covalent bonds. The resulting eucalyptus-based plastic exhibits high mechanical strength, excellent water resistance, UV ageing resistance, photothermal performance and light/heat controllable shape memory properties. By preserving the original structure of the lignin and cellulose, its natural degradability is ensured. This strategy for developing full-component plastics from solid agricultural and forestry waste offers a new approach to producing more competitive fully bio-based plastics.

Lignocellulosic biomass is regarded as one of the most abundant and sustainable resources for the development of bio-based plastics. The esterification of wood with phthalic anhydride (PA) yields low content due to lack of an efficient modification medium. In the present study, 1-methylimidazole was used as a catalytic medium for the highly efficient esterification of waste lignocellulosic biomass (poplar wood, mulberry wood, and wheat straw) with PA. After modification, the wood particles were plasticized and molded via injection molding. Analyses of the weight percent gain showed that under the same conditions, poplar wood, which has a soft and loose structure, presented the highest extent of esterification, whereas mulberry wood, which has a tight texture, had the lowest extent of esterification. Mulberry wood-based plastics exhibited the best performance in terms of flexural and tensile strength. Notably, short reaction time was favorable to produce bio-based plastics that were light in color. FT-IR spectroscopy and solid-state 13 C NMR spectroscopy confirmed the chemical structures of the esterified products. Dynamic mechanical analysis was used to identify the storage modulus and the damping factor of the esterified products. Analyses of the morphologies of the materials demonstrated different composite structures for the bio-based plastics, which played an important role in their mechanical performance.

Persistent luminescence materials can find extensive applications in commodity packaging, labels, and certificates owing to their distinctive optical effects and visual appeal. Nevertheless, rising costs and complex preparation processes have hindered the further development of multi-counterfeit long afterglow materials. In this study, a series of persistent luminescence polyester amide (PEA) composites were prepared by blending bio-based PEA with persistent luminescence particles. Simultaneously, we leveraged the optical effects on the material surface and the superimposed colors theory to create a series of composite films with customizable persistent luminescence colors. By exploring various combinations, 29 distinct persistent luminescence colors were achieved from the initial three options. We also designed a multiple anti-counterfeiting film with color-coded functionality to harness the shape memory property conferred by the stretch-induced crystallization of PEA. This innovative approach transforms low-cost persistent luminescence single-counterfeiting materials into high-value multiple anti-counterfeiting products, thereby contributing to the evolution of bio-based composites. This study underscores the utilization of affordable persistent luminescence single anti-counterfeiting masterbatch, combined with the physical attributes of bio-based plastics, to create high-value multiple anti-counterfeiting materials and foster the development of bio-based industries.

Stalk is an important biomass resource and converting it directly into high value-added products is a major challenge. Herein, we have cleverly utilized three novel techniques, mechanochemistry, Deep eutectic solvents (DES), and dynamic cross-linking, to achieve one-step in-situ plasticization of virtually worthless corn stalk into reprocessable thermoset plastics. This preparation strategy has many advantages, such as cheap and easy availability of raw materials, no need for catalysts, no need for pretreatment of raw materials, and no need for separation and purification of products. The stalk plastics have good mechanical strength, thermal stability, plasticity and reprocessability. In addition, cellulose plastic was prepared as a control experiment for stalk plastic, and the constitutive relationship between the structure of various components in stalk and the performance of plastic was deeply investigated. This strategy of developing new plastics from agricultural and forestry waste in a simple and environmentally friendly way will open up a whole new avenue for the production of more competitive bio-based plastics.
