A novel approach was proposed to prepare carbon dots (CDs) by acid carbonization and hydrothermal treatment of pork rib bones from food waste. The synthesized animal waste biomass CDs have the merits of eco-friendly, superior fluorescence properties and biocompatibility. The fluorescence of animal waste biomass CDs could be quenched efficiently by dithizone due to the coordination effect. With the addition of dimethoate, the dithizone ligands at CDs are replaced by hydrolysates, and hence the fluorescence is recovered. Thus, a sensing platform was constructed based on the coordination-originated fluorescence of animal waste biomass CDs which can sensitively and selectively detect dimethoate due to a simple displacement mechanism. Upon optimal conditions, the detection limit of dimethoate is 0.064 μM. The linear ranges were obtained in a range of 0.15 μM–5.0 μM. The method is rapid, convenient and environmentally acceptable that can directly detect dimethoate in water samples with recoveries of 93 %–105 %, and the relative standard deviations (RSDs) were 2 %–6 %, respectively. This simple strategy can be used to develop the fluorescence recovery sensors for chemical detection.

The condensation-collection and quantitative analysis of bio-oil limit its component investigation and utilization. In order to find a convenient method for the analysis of bio-oil, the present study conducted an attempt for bio-oil quantitative analysis with the addition of internal standards before pyrolysis. Based on their good thermal stability, phenethyl acetate and naphthalene were selected as standards in the study and experiments were carried out to compare the effects of two added modes (adding into the biowaste before pyrolysis or adding into bio-oil after pyrolysis) on the bio-oil analysis. The results showed that both phenethyl acetate and naphthalene were mainly volatilized under testing conditions, which could be transferred into the oil with the volatile matters during biowaste pyrolysis. Through the co-pyrolysis experiments of the internal standards with lignin and cellulose, almost no interactions were found between the internal standards and such components. Furthermore, adding these standards before pyrolysis hardly affected the properties of noncondensable gas and biochar from the used biowaste samples (tobacco and sawdust waste). Compared with the bio-oil analysis results via traditional methods by adding standards into the bio-oil after pyrolysis, the results regarding the component distribution characteristics of the bio-oil were similar using the proposed method through the addition of standards before pyrolysis. Considering adequate mixing of the added standards (before pyrolysis) in the generated bio-oil, the proposed method could partly help to avoid inaccurate analysis of bio-oil components caused by incomplete collection of the pyrolytic volatiles.Keywords:biowaste;pyrolysis;bio-oil quantitative analysis;phenethyl acetate;naphthalene

Highly microporous carbon material with nitrogen doping has been synthesized via a facile one-step approach by employing natural biowaste miscellaneous wood fibers derived hydrochar as precursor and melamine as nitrogen source respectively. The added melamine not only results in the incorporation of some nitrogen into the carbon framework but also increases the specific surface area of carbon material. Such resultant N -doped microporous carbon possesses the functionalized nitrogen doping (1.75 at. %), a large specific surface area (∼1807 m 2 g −1 ) and abundant highly interconnected micropores. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of high specific surface area, well-developed pore size distribution and functionalized groups, this carbon material delivers a high specific capacitance of 345 F g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 , an excellent capacitance retention with 270 F g −1 at up to 30 A g −1 , and a remarkable cycle ability with 91.3% retention after 10,000 cycles at 5.0 A g −1 . Based on it, the as-developed flexible symmetric solid-state supercapacitor delivers a high energy density of 7.92 W h kg −1 at the power density of 250 W kg −1 . Evidently, this work provides a facile and cost-effective route for functionalized natural biowaste-based carbon materials and further opens up a way for highly value-added recycling of biowaste-like materials.

Acid hydrothermal treatment of biowaste is a beneficial approach for producing hydrochar with high hydrothermal humic acid (HHA) selectivity, along with a by-product hydrothermal solution containing saccharides, furans, and aromatic compounds. Conversely, alkaline hydrothermal conditions are suitable for humification to form HHA. This study explored the recycling of hydrothermal solution as a solvent for hydrochar production, aiming to reduce salt content in wastewater and the need for acid/alkali inputs. The acidity of the recycled hydrothermal solution significantly influenced the quality of the prepared hydrochar in terms of alkaline hydrothermal humification. Insufficient solution acidity resulted in a decrease in hydrochar-derived HHA yield (65.0 wt% to 20.2 wt%). Maintaining sufficient acidity (pH 0) in the recycled hydrothermal solution not only improved the hydrochar yield (29.6 wt% to 33.1 wt%) via polymerization or condensation reactions but also maintained ab high level of hydrochar-derived HHA yield (68.2 wt% to 71.2 wt%). This can be attributed to adequate hydrolysis of biowaste and polymerization of soluble chemicals into the hydrochar. Furthermore, the total yields of hydrochar-derived and solution-derived humic substances were higher compared to values obtained without hydrothermal solution recycling. This study presents an innovative hydrothermal process for HHA production, offering cost savings and environmental benefits.

Nowadays, freshwater shortage, energy crisis and environmental pollution are the three major threats to human beings. Bio-waste is an important source of environmental pollutant emissions and a renewable resource with great potential. Herein, we develop a photothermal material based on bagasse for solar steam generation to relieve the freshwater crisis and mitigate environmental pollution caused by bio-waste. The mainly functional part of the solar-driven steam generator here is bagasse-based photothermal aerogel (B-PTA), which composes of carbonized bagasse (CB) and bagasse-derived cellulose fiber (BDCF). The B-PTA relying on CB can effectively absorb sunlight (~ 95%), resulting in a prominent light-to-heat ability. The B-PTA with DBCF has super-hydrophilicity, water transport and retention ability. Depending on the excellent light absorption and 3D water passageway, the B-PTA gives a water evaporation rate of 1.36 kg m –2 h –1 , and achieves a photothermal conversion efficiency of 77.34% under 1-sun illumination (1 kW m –2 ). The B-PTA shows remarkable stability that the efficiency without significant change after 20 cycles. In addition, the B-PTA can effectively desalt seawater and purify dye wastewater with natural sunlight. Therefore, turning bio-waste into valuable photothermal material for solar steam generation is possible. Due to the merits of low cost, scalability, environmental friendliness, B-PTA has the potential for real-world water purification. Graphical abstract

This work aimed to develop a feasible technology to reuse dead pig biowaste for heavy metals removal , which was first carbonized into pig bone char (PBC) after pyrolysis and further functionalized with amino ( NH 2 ) to improve its affinity with heavy metals. The application of PBC after NH 2 -functionalization for aqueous heavy metals removal was explored, including Pb 2+ , Cu 2+ , and different complex Cu(II) species. PBC@SiO 2 -NH 2 showed comparable performance with AC@SiO 2 -NH 2 . The adsorption capacity of Pb 2+ and Cu 2+ by PBC@SiO 2 -NH 2 was 120 and 30 mg g −1 , respectively. The NH 2 functionalization enhanced the adsorption of complex Cu(II) species, and PBC@SiO 2 -NH 2 exhibited good performance under a wide pH range and coexisting ions. The adsorption of Cu(II) EDTA species with an EDTA/Cu(II) molar ratio of 1.0 by PBC would be enhanced ~3 times and ~6 times after NH 2 functionalization and further addition of Fe 3+ , respectively. The results of EDX , elemental mapping, and XPS confirmed the adsorption of Cu(II) species. The adsorption kinetics , isotherm, and thermodynamics of different Cu(II) species by PBC@SiO 2 -NH 2 were investigated. The regeneration of PBC@SiO 2 -NH 2 was easily performed via acidic wash. These results suggested the application potential of the reuse of biowaste, which could be a promising adsorbent for aqueous heavy metals after specific functionalization.

In this present work, smoke-like carbon was successfully fabricated from a bio-waste fungal substrate crude polysaccharide for the first time. The as-prepared products possess smoke-like structures, ultra-high specific surface area (SBET: 2160 m2 g−1) and a high content of micropores (microporous surface area of 60%, with a nanopore size of 0.70 nm), which can increase the specific capacitance, representing a wonderful structure for electrochemical energy storage devices. The as-prepared sample displayed an excellent specific capacitance of 152 F g−1 at 5 A g−1 in the three-electrode configuration and exhibited maximal densities of 6.8–10.2 W h kg−1 under power outputs of 253.4–24.3 kW kg−1. We believe that this work demonstrates a simple, green and low-cost route by using agricultural residue to prepare applicable carbon materials for use in energy storage devices.

Utilizing biowaste shells (>95 wt% CaCO3) in chemical synthesis can both remediate environmental pollution and produce novel functional materials. Nonetheless, syntheses of nanomaterials from solid matter such as bio-shells are still rare. Herein, we for the first time reported the synthesis of a 0D/2D nanostructure, i.e., Ca(OH)2 nanosheets decorated with Mn3O4 quantum dots, from bio-shells in a green manner. Specifically, eggshells were calcined to form porous CaO that inherited a hierarchical framework from the source shell. The shell-derived CaO was then stirred together with KMnO4 in anhydrous ethanol at room temperature to generate the 0D/2D Ca(OH)2/Mn3O4 nanostructure (denoted as the Mn–Ca composite), in which Mn3O4 quantum dots were evenly dispersed on thin Ca(OH)2 nanosheets. Mechanism studies revealed that a trace amount of H2O released from the redox reaction between KMnO4 and ethanol regulated the slow hydrolysis and exfoliation of Ca(OH)2 nanosheets from the CaO framework. At the same time, the redox reaction generated Mn3O4 quantum dots that were deposited in situ on the Ca(OH)2 nanosheets, i.e., only where H2O was liberated and the hydrolysis of CaO took place. This mechanism allowed the uniform dispersion of Mn3O4 on the newly formed Ca(OH)2 nanosheets. Thanks to its unique 0D/2D structure, this Mn–Ca composite could highly efficiently extract trace-level Pb(II) from synthetic wastewater and outperformed many other Mn-based nanomaterials prepared purely from chemical reagents. This 0D/2D Mn–Ca composite possessed a high capacity for Pb removal (up to 1580 mg g−1 when the initial Pb(II) concentration was 1 g L−1), and it could also scavenge various other heavy metal ions such as Cu(II), Cd(II), Eu(III), Co(II), and Ag(I). Other biowaste shells such as oyster shells and clam shells also successfully produced a functional nanomaterial via the presented methodology. The current findings open a new way for biowaste recycling and may inspire the design of novel nanomaterials.

This work designed a low-cost and sensitive electrochemical sensor based on chitosan (CTS)-modified peanut shell-derived porous carbon (PSPC) for the detection of carbendazim (CBZ). PSPC exhibited a unique three-dimensional interconnected porous structure. The hierarchical porous carbon architecture with high specific surface area not only enhanced the adsorption capacity of CBZ but also significantly increased the interface contact area of electrode/electrolyte. CTS was uniformly deposited on the surface of PSPC via ultrasound-assisted liquid-phase dispersion method for the preparation of the PSPC@CTS nanocomposite. Benefiting from the good biocompatibility, adsorption ability and film-forming property of CTS, the PSPC@CTS modified electrode demonstrated good CBZ enrichment ability and improved structural stability. The PSPC@CTS/GCE sensor exhibited a low detection limit of 17.41 nM (S/N = 3) within the linear CBZ concentration range of 0.01–10.0 µM. Satisfactory recoveries of 96.78 –100.42% could validate its practical application potential of the PSPC@CTS modified sensor for the CBZ detection in food samples.

Sustainable and green natural lignin raw materials are considered as reliable precursors for large-scale production of carbon quantum dots (CQDs). However, extracting CQDs with ultra-low cytotoxicity and favorable fluorescence properties from lignin remains a challenge. Herein, the bio-waste lignin was converted into crude CQDs by an eco-friendly and rapid microwave pyrolysis approach in just 15 min. The as-obtained CQDs modified with nitrogen-atoms (N-CQDs) display a representative graphite-like structure, strong hydrophilicity, tiny particle size of 6.9 nm, and bright green fluorescence with a quantum yield of approximately 22.2% and fluorescence lifetime of 4.29 ns. Moreover, the N-CQDs exhibit high fluorescence stability under the conditions of a range of pH (5–11), continuous UV irradiation (∼2 h), and NaCl presence with concentrations of 0–1.2 mol/L. More importantly, the N-CQDs show negligible cytotoxicity. Even at the higher N-CQD concentration (300 μg/mL), A549 cells still maintain over 90% activity. The N-CQDs could be utilized for fluorescence imaging in living cells based on the above favorable characteristics. The present work paves the way for the value-added utilization of bio-waste lignin and the production of safe cell imaging agents.

Developing carbon quantum dots (CQDs) from bio-waste lignin for effectively detecting Cu 2+ is of great significance for promoting the value-added utilization of lignin resources. However, the limited amount of surface-active groups and low quantum yield of lignin-based CQDs hinder their application in this regard. Herein, bio-waste lignin was converted into value-added amine functionalized CQDs using a facile two-step hydrothermal approach. The as-synthesized CQDs modified with amino groups exhibit bright green fluorescence, abundant surface functional groups, high water solubility and uniform particle size (3.9 nm). Systematic analysis demonstrates that the rich NH 2 groups (~12.3 %) on the CQDs backbone improve their fluorescence properties (quantum yield increased from 3.4 % to 21.1 %) and specific detection ability for Cu 2+ . The developed NH 2 -CQDs serve as an efficient fluorescent probe , displaying high sensitivity and selectivity towards Cu 2+ in aqueous system, with a detection limit of 2.42 μmol/L, which is lower than the maximum permitted amount of Cu 2+ in drinking water (20 μmol/L). The detection mechanism of NH 2 -CQDs for Cu 2+ is attributed to the synergy of static quenching and photo-induced electron transfer . This study provides a valuable reference for the synthesis of high-quality fluorescent CQDs from lignin resources and the effective detection of trace Cu 2+ in aquatic environments.
