Thermochemical conversion of lignocellulosic bio-waste via fast pyrolysis in molten salts

Yuhan Yang,Hongyun Hu,Fu Yang,Hua Tang,Huan Liu,Baojun Yi,Xian Li,Hong Yao

This study, for the first time, investigated the volatiles emission and thermochemical conversion mechanism of bio-waste during pyrolysis in molten salts (NaNO 3 -KNO 3 -NaNO 2 ) at 300 °C. Cations of molten salts acted as catalysts while anions participated in the pyrolysis reaction. Compared with salt-free pyrolysis, more bio-waste was decomposed in molten salts, to produce more than 14 times the mass of gaseous products and twice the mass of liquid products. Furthermore, the thermochemical conversion behavior of typical biomass constituents, i.e. cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin, was also distinguished. The results suggested that lignin was most easily pyrolyzed to form numerous liquid acids, some nitrated aromatic compounds and more CO, H 2 . In contrast, the decomposition of cellulose was certainly restricted while more significant effects of anions were found in hemicellulose cracking by generating nitrogen-containing heterocyclic rings and amines. Besides, interactions among different biomass constituents were confirmed to affect the generation of bio-waste pyrolysis products.

Natural interface guiding cell: Directly using waste fish scales with rich micro/nano structures for control of cell behaviors

Jiao Yang Lu,Fu Rui Zhang,Xue Zhi Ding,Li Qiu Xia,Wei Tao Huang

Extracellular matrix (ECM) with various micro/nano features is an important chemical and physical clue to control cell behaviors. Fish scale surface has rich structures and similar components to ECM, but there are no reports on directly using the natural surface of fish scales to guide cell behavior. Herein, natural interface of waste fish scales can be directly, simply, green, and low-costly used to regulate cell behavior. A series of characterization showed that the natural surface of fish scales is rich in micro/nano structures (groove, short ridge, fibers), contain collagen and hydroxyapatite, has suitable wettability and no cytotoxicity. These natural structures on waste fish scales have adjustable cell guidance abilities, which are consistent with the anisotropy levels of these structures (ordered fibers > grooves > damaged fibers > short ridges). Moreover, cell contact interaction with micro/nano topographies on the fish scale surface is dynamically adjustable with growth time, and also increased the chemoresistance of cancer cells to drug (irinotecan and cisplatin). Due to its advantages of wide material sources, waste recycling, patterning-free, and pretreatment-free, directly using biowastes (fish scales) not only provides a new opportunity for the development of in vitro anisotropic culture platform, but also helps to deepen the understanding and application of natural materials.

Hydrothermal Extraction and Characterization of Natural Hydroxyapatite from Waste Bovine Femur Bone

Ms. Yi Zhang,Mr. Fei Kong,Mr. Dongze Wu,Dr. Jinjin Zhu,Dr. Shuhui Yang,Dr. xiangdong kong

The management of large amounts of bio-wastes, such as bovine femurs from kitchens and slaughterhouses, has long been a challenging issue. However, through the utilization of a hydrothermal process, it is possible to transform these bio-wastes into valuable products. In this study, we focused on extracting hydroxyapatite (HAp), the primary inorganic component of bovine femurs, for potential use in bone tissue engineering scaffolds. By subjecting the femurs to hydrothermal treatment at varying times and solvents, we successfully decomposed and removed the organic matter present, resulting in the extraction of HAp. To comprehensively evaluate the properties of the extracted HAp, we employed several characterization techniques that provided valuable insights into the structure, morphology, and elemental composition of the extracted HAp. Furthermore, we conducted a CCK8 assay, which confirmed the favorable biocompatibility of the extracted HAp. Overall, this study highlights the potential of hydrothermal treatment as an environmentally friendly and cost-effective method for handling bio-waste, specifically bovine femurs. The extracted HAp exhibits promising characteristics, making it suitable for a wide range of biomedical applications. This research contributes to the sustainable utilization of bio-waste and underscores the importance of resourceful exploitation for environmental protection.

Biogenic synthesis of N-doped carbon dots from S. cumini seeds for prostate cancer biomarker citrate detection, its live cancer cell imaging

Dongwei Zhu,Jindong Dai,Jue Jia,Thangamani Kanagaraj,Kanagaraj Rajalakshmi,Selvaraj Muthusamy,Lina Geng,Guoyue Yuan

Citrate is a potential biomarker for early stage detection of prostate cancer (PC), its concentration significantly dropped to 2–20 mM in PC patients. Herein, a cheap, simple, and reliable citrate sensor was proposed based on the biogenic synthesis of nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) derived from the biowaste of Syzygiumcumini (S. cumini) seeds. The prepared N-CDs were characterized by TEM, FT-IR and spectral studies. The average size of the N-CDs was found to be 2.4 nm, the presence of –OH and –NH 2 functional groups on the surface of N-CDs was confirmed by FT-IR analysis. The N-CDs possess the highest emission at 414 nm and cause quenching after reacting with citrate, which is due to the possible hydrogen bonding interactions between the probe and citrate. The probe expressed the lowest limit of detection of 3.5 nM, high selectivity, high interfering ability (1000-fold), provided a stable response at 5 min of reaction time, good biocompatibility, and delivered a contrast bioimage with different concentrations of citrate. The N-CDs were utilized to detect citrate in human urine samples, obtained good recovery results, and validated with the high-performance liquid chromatography method.

Sustainable polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) production from biowastes by Halomonas sp. WZQ-1 under non-sterile conditions

Ziqian Wang,Chunyu Du,Ruyu Yan,Shuying Li,Guanyu Zheng,Dahu Ding

Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) are promising candidates for replacing petroleum-derived plastics; however, their high production costs limit their commercialisation. In this study, we successfully isolated an efficient PHA-producing strain from a salt lake, which was subsequently identified as Halomonas sp. WZQ-1. Notably, Halomonas sp. WZQ-1 could serve as a promising cell-factory platform for polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) production, achieving a comparatively high PHB productivity (7.64 ± 0.4 g L −1 ) under moderate salt stress (60 g L −1 NaCl). We further realised semi-continuous PHB production in a bench-scale fermenter at a steady state by irregularly replenishing the organic substrate. The maximum PHB concentration reached 12.13 g L −1 . Finally, we realised the non-sterile conversion of typical biowastes (e.g. pomelo and cantaloupe residues) to PHB using Halomonas sp. WZQ-1. Encouragingly, 4.36 g L −1 PHB was directly obtained from the hydrolysate of pomelo residues with a characteristic melting temperature of 174.0 °C. Life cycle assessment was employed to systematically evaluate the environmental sustainability and potential challenges of biowaste-driven PHB biorefineries. Overall, our findings could serve as a pivotal step toward the commercialisation of PHB and provide a valuable reference for PHB biorefineries.

Protein-enriched fish “biowaste” converted to three-dimensional porous carbon nano-network for advanced oxygen reduction electrocatalysis

Chaozhong Guo,Rong Hu,Wenli Liao,Zhongbin Li,Lingtao Sun,Dongping Shi,Yanrong Li,Changguo Chen

Recycling and utilizing organic biowastes will effectively help to decrease the damage to the natural environment and synchronously facilitate the development of new carbon materials for energy applications. In this study, we directly convert protein-rich fish-scale biowaste to hierarchically porous three-dimentional (3D)-network nanocarbons via two-step pyrolysis process combined with ZnCl 2 activation and acidic-treatment. It is interestingly found that this material exhibits more excellent oxygen reduction electrocatalytic activity and stability compared to the commercial 20   wt% Pt/C catalyst in both alkaline and acidic solutions, which can be closely correlated to its chemical state of nitrogen atoms, BET surface area and inner porous structure. The addition of ZnCl 2 activator during pyrolysis process can help to produce the 3D network nanostructure and then to enhance the mesopore surface area, making for the improvement of oxygen reduction performance. More remarkably, the ORR onset potential on our material is about 60   mV higher than that on the Pt/C catalyst in alkaline electrolyte. In addition, we also propose that pyridinic- and graphitic-nitrogen species may be key factors to be responsible for the electrocatalytic activity. This study can encourage the exploration of high porosity nanocarbons from widely-existed biowastes, functioning as highly active and stable oxygen reduction electrocatalysts.

Top-Down Production of Sustainable and Scalable Hemicellulose Nanocrystals

Xiang Hao,Ziwen Lv,Hairong Wang,Jun Rao,Qiaoling Liu,Baozhong Lü,Feng Peng

Polysaccharide nanocrystals have led to the development of multifunctional and sustainable materials, but most are glucose-based carbohydrates derived from valuable natural sources. Here, we present a top-down strategy that enables one, for the first time, to isolate xylose-based hemicellulose nanocrystals from available industrial biowastes. By leveraging the selective oxidation of alkaline periodate, as high as 34 wt % solid yield is accessible. The hemicellulose nanocrystals exhibit platelet-like shapes (10–20 nm thickness, 30–80 nm wide), crystalline features, and superior dispersibility in water. We also showcase their successful interface applications for one-dimensional (1D) carbon nanotube (CNT) nanoinks and two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) nanozymes, which are comparable to the traditional cellulose nanocrystals. The scalable, low-cost, and sustainable hemicellulose nanocrystals can be envisioned to provide an alternative for glucose-based polysaccharide nanocrystals, as well as hold promise for the high-value utilization of biowastes.
