Tetrasphaera -enhanced biological phosphorus removal ( T -EBPR) was developed by augmenting conventional EBPR (C-EBPR) with Tetrasphaera to improve phosphorus removal from anaerobic digestate of swine wastewater. At influent total phosphorus (TP) concentrations of 45–55 mg/L, T -EBPR achieved effluent TP concentration of 4.17 ± 1.02 mg/L, 54 % lower than that in C-EBPR (8.98 ± 0.76 mg/L). The enhanced phosphorous removal was presumably due to the synergistic effect of Candidatus Accumulibacter and Tetrasphaera occupying different ecological niches. Bioaugmentation with Tetrasphaera promoted the polyphosphate accumulation metabolism depending more on the glycolysis pathway, as evidenced by an increase in intracellular storage compounds of glycogen and polyhydroxyalkanoates by 0.87 and 0.34 mmol C/L, respectively. The enhanced intracellular storage capacity was coincidentally linked to the increase in phosphorus release and uptake rates by 1.23 and 1.01 times, respectively. These results suggest bioaugmentation with Tetrasphaera could be an efficient way for improved phosphorus removal from high-strength wastewater.

The development of cost-effective and sustainable water treatment technologies is crucial for supporting the water sector and the public in achieving global sustainable development goals (SDG 6) and carbon neutrality targets. Ultrafiltration (UF), known for its compactness, relatively high performance, and ease of operation, has been widely deployed in water treatment. However, its limitations in removing some emerging contaminants (ECs) and membrane fouling issues have hindered its broader application. This study investigated the incorporation of bioaugmented filtration into conventional UF processes to enhance ECs removal and mitigate membrane fouling during the treatment of real drinking water sources. In addition to effectively removing microorganisms (eukaryotes and bacteria), polysaccharides (13.9%), and inorganic pollutants (CaCO 3 , MgO, SiO 2 , and Al 2 O 3 ), the proposed approach also demonstrated superior removal (4.6%–100.0%) of four target ECs (atenolol, carbamazepine, trimethoprim, and sulfamethoxazole) compared to direct UF process (1.5%–47.5%). After 56 days of operation, the bioaugmented pre-treatment significantly reduced transmembrane pressure (TMP) by 80.2% compared to the direct UF process. Mechanisms studies further reassured that ECs removal followed oxidation during bioaugmentation pre-treatment. The time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry with in-depth analysis capability (around 5 nm) revealed that the UF membrane primarily removed atenolol through adsorption. The toxicity prediction results of typical ECs and their degradation intermediates indicated a significant reduction in ecological risk for most intermediates. The findings from this work demonstrate the feasibility of using low-carbon and few-chemical water treatment technologies to secure drinking water quality.

Polyphenols are important functional substances produced in the acetic acid fermentation (AAF) of Shanxi aged vinegar (SAV). Previous studies have shown that the metabolic activity of microorganisms is closely related to polyphenol production and accumulation. In this study, microorganisms in the AAF of SAV were analyzed to explore how to increase the polyphenol yield by changing the microorganisms and reveal the potential mechanism of the microbial influence on the polyphenol yield. Macrotranscriptome analysis showed that acetic and lactic acid bacteria dominated the AAF fermentation process and initially increased and decreased. Spearman correlation analysis and verification experiments showed that the co-addition ofAcetobacter pasteurianusandLactobacillus helveticuspromoted the accumulation of polyphenols, and the total polyphenol content increased by 72% after strengthening. Keywords:Shanxi aged vinegar;polyphenols;acetic acid fermentation;microbial enhancement;Acetobacter pasteurianus

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a group of contaminants with low bioavailability and biodegradability . As a result, removing PAHs from contaminated soils is often inefficient. In this study, soils spiked with fluoranthene and pyrene were inoculated with Aeromonas sp. BCP-3, a newly isolated strain from coke-plant sludge , and treated in slurry bioreactors . The removal of PAHs was significantly affected by aeration rate, slurry water-soil mass ratio, stirring rate, temperature, and the concentration of Tween-80. Such effects were attributed to changes in BCP-3 growth, PAHs solid-liquid mass transfer, and slurry particle size. Notably, under optimal conditions (i.e., aeration rate of 1.5 L/min, temperature of 30 °C, stirring rate of 200 rpm, water-soil mass ratio of 1.5:1, and Tween-80 concentration of 1.3 %), 96.3 % and 97.2 % of initially spiked fluoranthene and pyrene were removed within 12 days, respectively. A PAH-contaminated soil was collected from a local coking plant and treated under the same conditions, except for the Tween-80 concentration. For the real soil, the Tween-80 concentration was 4 % to ensure a significant proportion of PAHs released into the liquid phase. Twenty-one days after inoculation of BCP-3, the removal efficiencies of low molecular weight PAHs and high molecular weight PAHs were 82.2 % and 51.8 %, respectively. The removal efficiencies of PAHs were significantly higher than the slurry without BCP-3 or HgCl 2 -sterilized slurry. BCP-3 improved the bioavailability and biodegradability of PAHs, resulting in effective PAH removal in slurry bioreactors . Overall, successful bioaugmentation was achieved with the addition of Tween-80 and the optimization of operating conditions.

The widely used plastic film containing di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) in agriculture has caused serious soil pollution and poses risks to human health through the food chain. An effective DEHP degradation bacteria, Microbacterium sp. J-1, was newly isolated from landfill soil. Response surface methodology was successfully employed for optimization resulting in 96% degradation of DEHP (200 mg L −1 ) within 5 days. This strain degraded DEHP by hydrolysis of the ester bond and hydroxylation of the aromatic ring to form 2-ethyl hexanol, mono-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, phthalate acid, and protocatechuic acid, and subsequently transformed these compounds with a maximum specific degradation rate ( q
max ), half-saturation constant ( K
s
), and inhibition constant ( K
i
) of 1.46 day −1 , 180.2 mg L −1 , and 332.8 mg L −1 , respectively. Bioaugmentation of DEHP-contaminated soils with the strain J-1 greatly enhanced the DEHP dissipation rate (~88%). Moreover, this strain could efficiently colonize the rhizosphere soil of inoculated vegetables and further enhanced DEHP degradation (~97%), leading to a significant decrease (>70%) in DEHP accumulation in shoots and roots of the inoculated vegetables compared to uninoculated vegetables. The results highlighted the roles of the inoculated exogenous bacteria in simultaneously bioremediating contaminated soils and reducing bioaccumulation of DEHP in the edible part of the vegetable for food safety.

Folate is an essential vitamin for the human body and must be obtained exogenously. It is recognized that some microorganisms are capable of producing folates during growth, revealing possibilities for innovations of natural folate biofortified foods. The aim of this study was to identify potential folate-producing strains to enhance folate content in fermented Moringa oleifera leaves powder (MOLP). Although most of the tested strains exhibited folate production, there were significant differences among them in terms of both quantity and distribution, whether intracellular or extracellular. 10 strains with potential for folate production were chosen for enhancing the folate content of MOLP. The two most promising strains, Lactiplantibacillus sp. LP1 and Saccharomyces cerevisiae Y-J-1, demonstrated high folate levels up to 1940 and 2115 μg/100 g dry matter, respectively. These levels were 1.6 and 1.8-fold the initial value in MOLP. Additionally, the fermentation of MOLP not only enhanced its nutritional quality but also preserved its significant bioactivity. This study provides the initial understanding of how selected microorganisms can naturally enrich folates in fermented MOLP, presenting an alternative solution to address the widespread issue of folate deficiency while promoting human health.

BACKGROUND Foliar application of highly concentrated ZnSO 4 fertilizer improves Zn biofortification in wheat grains. However, excess ZnSO 4 ·7H 2 O concentration (≥5 g kg −1 , w v −1 ) has been associated with leaf burn and yield loss, necessitating Zn sources with a high threshold concentration. The aim of this study, based on a 2 year field experiment conducted on wheat cultivated in acidic and alkaline soil, was to identify a suitable Zn formulation with a high Zn concentration or efficient adjuvant to achieve optimal Zn biofortification levels without compromising agronomic performance. RESULTS There was a continued increase in the Zn concentration in wheat grains and a decrease in grain yield with an increase in the concentration of the Zn foliar sprays in both soil types examined. Wheats treated with chelated Zn foliar sprays – Zn glycine chelate (ZnGly) and Zn-ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (ZnEDTA) – had less foliar injury than those treated with unchelated Zn fertilizers. Furthermore, irrespective of wheat cultivars and soil types, ZnEDTA applied to wheat at a concentration of 10 g kg −1 achieved the highest grain Zn concentration without negatively affecting the wheat performance. Adjuvant type and concentration caused no significant variation in grain Zn concentration. CONCLUSION Overall, without foliar burn, wheat treated with 10 g kg −1 ZnEDTA foliar spray had the best performance with regard to grain Zn concentration and grain yield, which could have considerable implications for Zn biofortification of wheat grain. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

Coking wastewater (CWW) containing complicated organic compositions and strong toxicity cause potential hazards to natural water bodies as well as human health. The aim of this study was integrating newly isolated Comamonas sp. ZF-3, biofilm-based bioaugmentation and fluidized bed reactor into an anoxic filter-fluidized bed reactor (AF-FBR) system to treat actual CWW. The results showed that 93 % of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and 97 % of ammonia nitrogen (NH 4 + -N) removal efficiency were achieved with hydraulic retention time of 70 h. The main pollutants including phenolic compounds, heterocyclic compounds and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons could be removed via biofilm-based process in AF-FBR. The formation of carrier biofilm was consistent with the system performance as well as the biofilm community evolution, during which the microbial community was gradually dominated by some functional genus (e.g., Comamonas , Thiobacillus , Pseudomonas and Thauera ), meanwhile, ammonium-oxidizing bacteria Nitrosomonas , nitrite-oxidizing bacteria Nitrospira and denitrifiers (e.g., Pseudomonas , Thiobacillus and Bacillus ) coexisted in biofilm to form a microbial community for biological nitrogen removal. Such microbial community structure explained the observed simultaneous removal of COD and NH 4 + -N in the AF-FBR.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a group of organic pollutants ubiquitous and persistent in soil. In order to provide a viable solution for bioremediation of PAHs-contaminated soil, a strain of Achromobacter xylosoxidans BP1 with superior PAHs degradation ability was isolated from contaminated soil at a coal chemical site in northern China. The degradation of phenanthrene (PHE) and benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) by strain BP1 was investigated in three different liquid phase cultures, and the removal rates of PHE and BaP by strain BP1 were 98.47% and 29.86% after 7 days under the conditions of PHE and BaP as the only carbon source, respectively. In the medium with the coexistence of PHE and BaP, the removal rates of BP1 were 89.44% and 9.42% after 7 days, respectively. Then, strain BP1 was investigated for its feasibility in remediating PAH-contaminated soil. Among the four PAHs-contaminated soils treated differently, the treatment inoculated with BP1 exhibited higher removal rates of PHE and BaP (p < 0.05), especially the CS-BP1 treatment (inoculation of BP1 into unsterilized PAHs-contaminated soil) showed 67.72%, 13.48% removal of PHE and BaP, respectively, over 49 days of incubation. Bioaugmentation also significantly increased the activity of dehydrogenase and catalase in the soil (p<0.05). Furthermore, the effect of bioaugmentation on the removal of PAHs was investigated by measuring the activity of dehydrogenase (DH) and catalase (CAT) during incubation. Among them, the DH and CAT activities of CS-BP1 and SCS-BP1 (inoculation of BP1 into sterilized PAHs-contaminated soil) treatments inoculated with strain BP1 were significantly higher than those of treatments without BP1 addition during incubation (p < 0.01). The structure of the microbial community varied among treatments, but the Proteobacteria phylum showed the highest relative abundance in all treatments of the bioremediation process, and most of the bacteria with higher relative abundance at the genus level also belonged to the Proteobacteria phylum. Prediction of microbial functions in soil by FAPROTAX analysis showed that bioaugmentation enhanced microbial functions associated with the degradation of PAHs. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of Achromobacter xylosoxidans BP1 as a PAH-contaminated soil degrader for the risk control of PAHs contamination.

With the improvement of electroplating process and products requirement, refractory organics, heavy metals or even heavy metal nanoparticles (NP) exist simultaneously in electroplating wastewater inevitably, makes electroplating wastewater treatment effluent difficult to meet the discharge standard. In order to improve the organics removal under the exposure of CuO NP, strains (designated as L1–L5) that have both organics degradation and Cu 2+ tolerance capacities were isolated and employed in the electroplating wastewater bioaugmentation treatment using a hydrolytic/anoxic/oxic-membrane bioreactor . The Cu 2+ adsorption process followed pseudo-second order kinetics and the isotherms fit well to Langmuir isotherm model. L2, L3 and L4 showed higher Cu 2+ adsorption capacity than that of L1 and L5. Under the optimal condition, the maximum Cu 2+ adsorption capacity of L2, L3 and L4 was 34.15, 45.68 and 26.72 mg g −1 , respectively. Their average COD removal efficiency achieved 65.7 ± 10.9%, 61.5 ± 6.7% and 71.6 ± 6.0%, respectively. The three isolates were used to construct consortia with the inoculum concentration of 400 mg L −1 . One-time and repeated inoculations were evaluated to find the applicable strategy. Repeated inoculation resulted in a better COD and Cu removal performance (76.2 ± 2.6% and 98.5 ± 0.3%, respectively) than those of one-time inoculation (69.0 ± 2.0% and 98.0 ± 0.3%, respectively). The most functionally stable, balanced and resistant bacterial community was formed in the one-time inoculation system while for fungal community it was formed in the repeated inoculation system.

Di-butyl phthalate (DBP) is a widely used plasticizer , recalcitrant and hazardous organic compound with high detection frequencies and concentrations in water and soil that pose a great threat to human health. A novel endphytic bacterium strain N-1 capable of efficiently degrading DBP and utilizing it as sole carbon source was isolated from Ageratum conyzoides. This bacterium was identified as Bacillus subtilis based on its morphological characteristics and 16S rDNA sequence analysis. Under the optimal culture conditions (pH 7.0, 30 °C), degradation percentage of DBP (12.5–100 mg/L) was up to 95% within five days, and its biodegradation half-life was less than 7.23 h. Degradation percentage of high DBP concentration (200 mg/L) was relatively lower (89%) with half-life of 56.8 h. DBP was degraded by Bacillus subtilis N-1 into mono-butyl phthalate and phthalic acid as evidenced by GC-MS analysis. Bioaugmentation of Youngia japonica plant slurry with strain N-1 greatly accelerated DBP dissipation with 97.5% removal percentage (higher by 47% than non-inoculation). The results highlighted that strain N-1 has great potential for bioremediation by plant-endophyte partnerships and for lowering PAE accumulation in crops.

The coupling of thermal remediation with microbial reductive dechlorination (MRD) has shown promising potential for the cleanup of chlorinated solvent contaminated sites. In this study, thermal treatment and bioaugmentation were applied in series, where prior higher thermal remediation temperature led to improved TCE dechlorination performance with both better organohalide-respiring bacteria (OHRB) colonization and electron donor availability. The 60 °C was found to be a key temperature point where the promotion effect became obvious. Amplicon sequencing and co-occurrence network analysis demonstrated that temperature was a more dominating factor than bioaugmentation that impacted microbial community structure. Higher temperature of prior thermal treatment resulted in the decrease of richness, diversity of indigenous microbial communities, and simplified the network structure, which benefited the build-up of newcoming microorganisms during bioaugmentation . Thus, the abundance of Desulfitobacterium increased from 0.11 % (25 °C) to 3.10 % (90 °C). Meanwhile, released volatile fatty acids (VFAs) during thermal remediation functioned as electron donors and boosted MRD. Our results provided temperature-specific information on synergistic effect of sequential thermal remediation and bioaugmentation, which contributed to better implementation of the coupled technologies in chloroethene-impacted sites.
