Micro/nanorobots (MNRs) hold great promise for various applications due to their capability to execute complex tasks in hard-to-reach micro/nano cavities. However, the developed magnetic MNRs, as marionettes of external magnetic fields, lack built-in intelligence for self-targeting, while chemotactic MNRs suffer from limited self-targeting range. Here, we demonstrate magnetic–chemotactic ZnO/Fe–Ag Janus microrobots (JMRs) capable of rapid, remote self-targeting for bacterial elimination. The JMRs utilize the magnetic Fe engine for coarse navigation from a distance, allowing for external control to swiftly guide them to the vicinity of a hidden/uncharted target that establishes a local chemical gradient ([CO2] or [H+] gradient). Once in proximity, the inherent chemotaxis of the JMRs takes over, the chemotactic engine enables them to autonomously accumulate at the target site along the chemical gradient in high precision. Upon reaching the target, the ZnO/Fe–Ag JMRs can release Zn2+ and Ag+ to eliminate bacteria residing there. The proposed strategy of integrating on-board chemotaxis with external magnetic field-driven propulsion paves the way for efficient precise therapies using MNRs, especially in targeted drug/energy delivery involving remote hidden or uncharted targets.

Photocatalytic reactions, such as H 2 production, CO 2 reduction, wastewater treatment, have emerged as highly promising technological solutions for addressing energy and environmental challenges. However, sedimentation-induced low photocatalytic activity and inconvenient recycling limit their practical applications. Here, we have developed magnetic-phototactic microbial robots for enhancing photocatalysis effect and directional recycling used/inactive photocatalyst. We first synthesized a magnetic g-C 3 N 4 /Fe 3 O 4 photocatalyst with enhanced visible light absorption, and then functionalized positively phototropic microalgae with the magnetic composite, which is denoted as magnetic-phototactic microbial robots. The photocatalytic efficiency of magnetic-phototactic microbial robots has substantially augmented up to 320% than that of g-C 3 N 4 /Fe 3 O 4 . Moreover, the magnetic-phototactic microbial robots can autonomously carry catalysts to bright underwater environment to efficiently utilize solar light for photodegradation, as well as exhibit highly efficient targeted recovery and recyclability. The highly efficient, environmentally friendly, and recyclable magnetic-phototactic microbial robot is expected to make great impacts on energy and environment fields.

Proteinosome, characterized by an inner aqueous cavity wrapped by membrane with embedded protein, is one of the most attractive structures, has huge potential applications on drug delivery, tissue engineering, catalysis, synthetic biology, artificial cells, engineering of the biomachines, biosensors, and biodevices, etc. Here, inspired by polyphenol chemistry, a facile and universal method is presented to fabricate the diverse proteinosomes, with independence on the amino acid sequence, isoelectric points, molecular weight ( M w ), wettability, and functional domains of applied proteins. Besides, the materials employed here are green and cost-effective, and the method developed here is efficient and easily operated without any expensive equipments. The proteinosomes and the mechanism of generating proteinosomes are well characterized and analyzed by various techniques. The permeability of generated proteinosomes is underlined, which not only shows dependence on the applied proteins but also the M w of diffused molecules. In addition, the permeability can be reversibly switched on/off in 100% by environmental pH. Capitalizing the facility and university of this method, it is believed it paves the way of the proteinosomes to multiple potential applications, such as drug delivery, micro-/nanoreactors, tissue engineering, catalysis, biosensor, etc.
