Polyaniline-MXene-coated carbon cloth as an anode for microbial fuel cells

Jiang Demin,Zhu Chenyi,He Yuan,Xing ChengCheng,Xie Kun,Xu Yan,Wang Yuqiao

Anodes play an important role in the extracellular electron transfer (EET) process in microbial fuel cells (MFCs). Herein, polyaniline modified multilayer MXene (PANI-MXene) on carbon cloth was used as an anode to improve the EET efficiency. The PANI-MXene was formed by the electrostatic interaction between the negatively charged groups of MXene and the positively charged protonated amino groups of PANI to enhance the bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation. The MFCs obtained a high maximum power density (737.3 mW·m -2 ) with the efficient EET process. This work provides a meaningful way to decorate anodes using binder-free modifiers for MFCs.

Boosting power output in microbial fuel cell with sulfur-doped MXene/polypyrrole hydrogel anode for enhanced extracellular electron transfer process

Bi Cen,Wen Qing,Chen Ye,Xu Haitao

Microbial fuel cell (MFC) has been regarded as a promising green and clean electricity generation device. The anode plays a crucial role in the electricity generation process within the MFC. This study employed a hydrothermal method for the doping of sulfur onto MXene nanosheets to alleviate the stacking, followed by an in situ polymerization process to fabricate sufur-doped MXene/polypyrrole (S–MXene/PPy) composite hydrogel on carbon felt (CF). The MFC constructed with this anode exhibited the highest power density of 8.05 W m −3 and a maximum output voltage of 646 mV, higher than that of MXene/PPy (623 mV, 6.03 W m −3 ), PPy (594 mV, 4.91 W m −3 ), and unmodified CF (574 mV, 4.05 W m −3 ). This improved performance can be attributed to the reduction of charge transfer resistance in the material while improving the bacteria affinity, leading to enhanced extracellular electron transfer (EET) efficiency. High-throughput sequencing indicates that the excellent biocompatibility significantly promotes the attachment and growth of electroactive microorganisms ( Geobacter , 45.34%) on the S–MXene/PPy anode. This study demonstrates that S–MXene/PPy hydrogel has good potential as an anode from the perspective of MFC electricity generation and microbial analysis. Graphical abstract

Three-Dimensional Carbon Monolith Coated by Nano-TiO2 for Anode Enhancement in Microbial Fuel Cells

Fan Zhao,Yini Chen,Shiyang Zhang,Meng Li,Xinhua Tang

A three-dimensional (3D) anode is essential for high-performance microbial fuel cells (MFCs). In this study, 3D porous carbon monoliths from a wax gourd (WGCM) were obtained by freeze-drying and carbonization. Nano-TiO2was further coated onto the surface of WGCM to obtain a nano-TiO2/WGCM anode. The WGCM anode enhanced the maximum power density of MFCs by 167.9% compared with the carbon felt anode, while nano-TiO2/WGCM anode additionally increased the value by 45.8% to achieve 1396.2 mW/m2. WGCM enhancement was due to the 3D porous structure, the good conductivity and the surface hydrophilicity, which enhanced electroactive biofilm formation and anodic electron transfer. In addition, nano-TiO2modification enhanced the enrichment ofAcinetobacter, an electricigen, by 31.0% on the anode to further improve the power production. The results demonstrated that the nano-TiO2/WGCM was an effective anode for power enhancement in MFCs.Keywords:microbial fuel cells;anode;carbon monolith;nano-TiO2;Acinetobacter

Simultaneous Degradation of Penoxsulam with Power Generation in Microbial Fuel Cells

Jiaran Qi,Xu Yongjie,Chu Gang,Liu Xiaohong,Si Youbin

Abstract The widespread use of penoxsulam has increased the potential for environmental risks. In this study, a microbial fuel cell (MFC) was investigated and optimized for degradation of penoxsulam and corresponding power generation performance. Of the electricity producing bacteria tested, Shewanella putrefaciens was found to be the most suitable, and reached a maximum power of 260.4 mW/m 2 along with a penoxsulam degradation efficiency of 95%. MFC electrical performance was greatly enhanced by increasing the anode carbon felt surface area from 5 to 20 cm 2 , which raised the MFC electrical power from 90.3 to 240.3 mW/m 2 and increased the penoxsulam degradation efficiency in parallel. The initial penoxsulam concentration in the reaction system influenced MFC power generation, where higher initial penoxsulam concentrations inhibited microbial activity, decreased the MFC power performance, and reduced the penoxsulam degradation efficiency. In addition, the MFC reaction system pH influenced MFC electrical performance, and adjusting the pH to 8 increased the peak voltage and power density to 0.687 V and 264.8 mW/m 2 , respectively. S. putrefaciens secretes soluble compounds to mediate electron transfer and the addition of Riboflavin (RF) increases the charge transfer efficiency. Our findings provide a basis for revealing the mechanism by which organic contaminants are degraded in MFCs, and demonstrate the feasibility of MFCs for efficient penoxsulam degradation and power generation.

Immobilization of Enzymes by Electrochemical and Chemical Oxidative Polymerization of L-DOPA to Fabricate Amperometric Biosensors and Biofuel Cells

Mengzhen Dai,Lingen Sun,Long Chao,Yueming Tan,Yingchun Fu,Chao Chen,Qingji Xie

Electrochemical/chemical oxidative synthesis and biosensing/biofuel cell applications of poly(L-DOPA) (PD) are studied versus polydopamine (PDA) as a recent hotspot biomaterial. The enzyme electrode developed by coelectrodeposition of PD and glucose oxidase (GOx), uricase, or tyrosinase shows biosensing performance superior to that of the corresponding PDA-based enzyme electrode. The chemical oxidative polymerization of L-DOPA (PDC) by NaAuCl4 in GOx-containing neutral aqueous solution is used to immobilize GOx and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). The thus-prepared chitosan (CS)/GOx-PDC-AuNPs/Auplate/Au electrode working in the first-generation biosensing mode responds linearly to glucose concentration with a sensitivity of 152 μA mM–1 cm–2, which is larger than those of the CS/GOx-PDAC-AuNPs/Auplate/Au electrode, the CS/GOx-poly(3-anilineboronic acid) (PABA)-AuNPs/Auplate/Au electrode, and the most reported GOx-based enzyme electrodes. This PDC-based enzyme electrode also works well in the second-generation biosensing mode and as an excellent bioanode in biofuel cell construction, probably because PD as an amino acid polymer has the higher biocompatibility and the more favorable affinity to the enzyme than PDA. The PD material of great convenience in synthesis, outstanding biocompatibility for preparing high-performance bionanocomposites, and strong capability of multifunctional coatings on many surfaces may find wide applications in diversified fields including biotechnology and surface-coating.

Study on power generation and Congo red decolorization of 3D conductive PPy-CNT hydrogel in bioelectrochemical system

Lijuan Qi,Haitao Xu,Rui Tang,Lili Liu,Ye Chen,Qing Wen

In this paper, a polypyrrole-carbon nanotube hydrogel (PPy-CNT) with 3D macroporous structure was prepared by secondary growth method. This self-supporting material with good conductivity and biocompatibility can be directly used as anode in a microbial fuel cell (MFC). The prepared material had a uniform structure with rich 3D porosity and showed good water retention performance. The effect of the mass ratio of PPy and CNT in the hydrogel were also investigated to evaluate the electrical performance of MFC. The MFC with 10:1 PPy-CNT hydrogel anode could reached the maximum power density of 3660.25 mW/m3 and the minimal electrochemical reaction impedance of anode was 5.06 Ω. The effects of Congo red concentration, external resistance and suspended activated sludge on decolorazation and electricity generation were also investigated in the MFC with the best performance hydrogel. When the Congo red concentration was 50 mg/L and the external resistance was 200 Ω, the dye decolorization rate and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal rate could reach 94.35% and 42.31% at 48h while the output voltage of MFC was 480 mV. When activated sludge was present, the decolorization rate and COD removal rate could be increased to 99.55% and 48.08% at 48 h. The above results showed that the porous hydrogel anode had broad application prospects in synchronous wastewater treatment and electricity production of MFC.

Synergistic degradation for o-chlorophenol and enhancement of power generation by a coupled photocatalytic-microbial fuel cell system

Chengzhi Wang,Guanlan Wu,Xiaolin Zhu,Yi Xing,Xing Yuan,Jiao Qu

A hierarchically photocatalytic microbial fuel cell system (PMFC) coupled with TiO 2 photoanode and bioanode was established to enhance the power generation based on single-chamber MFC. Compared with the conventional anaerobic mode, oxygen in the solution could be utilized by the photoanode of PMFC to improve the removal of o-chlorophenol (2-CP). The maximum power densities were increasing from 261 (MFC) to 301 mW/m 2 (PMFC). The removal efficiency of 2-CP (5 mg/L) in PMFC was 76.20% and higher than that in MFC (19.33%) and by photocatalysis (49.23%). The electron-hole separation efficiencies were decreasing with the increasing of dissolved oxygen, causing a low efficiency of photocatalysis, due to the reduction of the current density of the systems. The abundance of Geobacter sp., PHOS-HE36 fam., and Pseudomonas sp. was increased with illumination, contributing to improve the electricity production and 2-CP degradation. The only detective intermediate of 1,2-dichlorobenzene in PMFC indicated that the microbes could regulate the degradation pathway of 2-CP in the coupling system. These findings provided an feasible method for the effective degradation of refractory organic compounds and simultaneous energy recovery by combining photocatalysis and microbial power generation.

Electricity Generation by Microbial Fuel Cells Fuelled with Enteromorpha Prolifera Hydrolysis

Min Wang,Zhenhua Yan,Baoxu Huang,Jinsheng Zhao,Renmin Liu

Enteromorpha prolifera bloom caused a series of environmental issues and deterioration due to its rapid growth and ability to grow in fresh or seawater. This study explores the utilization of Enteromorpha prolifera collected from southern portions of the Yellow Sea as a resource for electricity generation by air cathode microbial fuel cells (MFCs). The power density reached 1027 mW/m 2 with an initial hydrolysate concentration of 1,000 mg chemical oxygen demand (COD)/liter, while coulombic efficiencies and COD removal reached 69.1% and 76.1% respectively. For comparison, three monosaccharides (rhamnose, xylose and glucose) were also tested as the fuels in the anode solution, their power density, coulombic efficiencies and COD removal are almost at the same level. These results indicated that Enteromorpha prolifera might be suitable resources for electricity generation using the MFC technology.

Nanozyme-Based Biofuel Cell Ingeniously Coupled with Luminol Chemiluminescence System through In Situ Co-Reactant Generation for Dual-Signal Biosensing

Cui Wang,Yuqing Wang,Junhua Liu,Feng Li,Panpan Gai

Classical luminol-based chemiluminescence (CL) is the process of emitting light enhanced by the addition of coreactant hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). To address the instability issue of H2O2 decomposition, herein, we proposed a nanozyme-based biofuel cell (BFC) ingeniously coupled with a luminol CL system via in situ generation of H2O2. Specifically, the gold nanoparticle (AuNP) nanozyme with glucose oxidase-like activity can act as the anodic enzyme of BFC to catalyze the oxidation of glucose to produce H2O2 and electrons. In this case, H2O2 as a coreactant enhanced the CL intensity and the cathode of the BFC obtained electrons to generate the open circuit voltage (EOCV) signals. As a result, a dual-signal biosensing platform was successfully constructed. Interestingly, the AuNPs-catalyzed system operates in an alkaline medium, which precisely meets the pH requirement for luminol luminescence. Such a BFC-CL system not only greatly lessens the effect of unstable exogenous H2O2 on the signal stability but also enhances the CL of luminol. Furthermore, both CL and EOCV signals present a positive correlation with the glucose concentration. Therefore, this novel BFC-CL system shows good performance for dual-signal biosensing, which would serve as a valuable guideline for the design and application of BFC-based self-powered or CL biosensors.

Treatment of m-Cresol Wastewater in an Anaerobic Fluidized Bed Microbial Fuel Cell Equipped with Different Modified Carbon Cloth Cathodes

Xinmin Liu,Yanjie Niu,Lingyun Wang,Qingjie Guo

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene (Gr) modified carbon cloth (CC) cathode were prepared by in situ polymerization method using polyaniline (PANI) as an adhesive. Different modified electrodes were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), cyclic voltammetry (CV), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) techniques. These different cathodes were used in anaerobic fluidized bed microbial fuel cell (AFB-MFC) to treat the synthetic m-cresol wastewater. The results showed that the maximum power densities of AFB-MFC with the Gr-modified cathode (PANI + Pt/C + Gr), the CNT-modified cathode (PANI + Pt/C + CNTs), and the Pt/C cathode (PANI + Pt/C) were 910.40, 445.14, and 127.07 mW/m2, respectively. In addition, the removal efficiency of m-cresol in AFB-MFC with PANI + Pt/C + Gr is 91.76%, while the corresponding values in AFB-MFC with PANI + Pt/C + CNTs and PANI + Pt/C are 91.72 and 89.26%, respectively. Gas chromatography–mass spectrometer (GC–MS) was used to detect metabolites of m-cresol. It was proved that m-cresol was degraded to protocatechol and then to 2-dimethylsuccinic acid. The energy of m-cresol degradation pathway was analyzed by Materials Studio (MS) software, and the control step of m-cresol degradation was determined.

Enhancement of gaseous chlorobenzene biodegradation and power generation in a microbial fuel cell by bifunctional Acinetobacter sp. HY-99C

Haoyang Liu,Yang Yu,Shengtao Jiang,Haimin Sun,Weixi Zhang,Jianmeng Chen,Dongzhi Chen

The efficient biodegradation of volatile chlorinated hydrocarbons using microbial fuel cells (MFCs) offers a feasible approach for purifying waste gas and alleviating energy crises. However, power generation is limited by poor pollutant biodegradation and slow electron transfer . The bifunctional bacterium Acinetobacter sp. HY-99C was screened and used to improve the performance of a conventional MFC. The inoculation of strain HY-99C into the conventional MFC promoted the formation of a compact biofilm with high metabolic activity and an enriched bifunctional genus ( Acinetobacter ), which resulted in the accelerated decomposition of chlorinated aromatic compounds into biodegradable organic acids. This led to efficient chlorobenzene removal and power generation from the MFC, with a chlorobenzene elimination capacity of 70.8 g m −3 h −1 and power density of 89.6 mW m −2 , which are improved over those of previously reported MFCs. This study provides novel insights into enhancing pollutant removal and power generation in MFCs.

Preparation of polypyrrole/titanium nitride composite modified biochar and its application research in microbial fuel cells

Xinyu Jing,Xi Chen,Mingchuan Zhang,Xinyang Xu

In this study, the in situ growth method was employed to modify biochar with polypyrrole–titanium (PPy–TiN) nitride composites, aiming to enhance its performance as an anode material in microbial fuel cells (MFCs). A series of characterizations were conducted on the polypyrrole-modified corn straw biochar anode (PPy/CS), titanium nitride-modified corn straw biochar anode (TiN/CS), and polypyrrole/titanium nitride composite-modified biochar anode (PPy–TiN/CS) to evaluate the feasibility of the modification method and identify the optimal modification scheme. Characterization techniques included scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and Tafel analysis. SEM and FTIR analyses confirmed the successful integration of polypyrrole and titanium nitride with biochar, achieving a minimum solution resistance of 7.80 Ω and charge transfer resistance of 1.79 Ω. Compared to the unmodified electrode, the modified electrodes demonstrated improved performance, highlighting the need for the development of cost-effective, efficient, and durable anode materials.
