The electroactive biofilms in the bioelectrodes of traditional bioelectrochemical systems (BES) directly interact with the aqueous solution and usually require a mild aqueous solution environment (e.g. 20 mM acetate and pH = 7.0) to exert their optimum bioelectrocatalytic activity. In this communication, we present a concept of encapsulation of a bioelectrode by a hydrogel for a BES in an alkaline solution environment. A hydrogel-bioelectrode (HBE) was prepared by encapsulating a living electroactive biofilm pre-grown in the bioelectrode with a poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogel through a freezing/thawing process. Under the protection of the hydrogel, the HBE could keep a high bioelectrocatalytic activity in an alkaline feeding solution with an acetate concentration of over 80 mM and a pH value of 11.0. Moreover it was very stable and tolerated low-frequency ultrasonic vibration. These results imply the extended applications of BESs in the area of high-strength wastewater treatment, portable and implantable devices.

Photo-bioelectrochemical fuel cell shows great potential as an environmental-friendly technology for converting solar energy and bioenergy into electricity with simultaneous wastewater treatment . The present work aims to assess the performance of an algal-bacterial biocathode photo-bioelectrochemical fuel cell (ABPBFC) operated with daily light/dark cycle for simultaneous bioelectrical power generation and high-strength nitrogen removal under oxytetracycline (OTC) stress by adding different concentrations of OTC into the biocathode. The results showed that the power generation of the ABPBFCs was significantly enhanced by the presence of OTC at all levels tested (5–50 mg/L) due to enhanced electron transfer from cathode to oxygen and nitrate mediated by degradation products of OTC, but the enhancement was not proportional to the rise in OTC concentration. The largest maximum power density of 54 mW/m 2 was achieved at 5 mg/L OTC during light period and 8.5 mW/m 2 was produced at 20 mg/L OTC during dark period, corresponding to a 1.8 and 7.5 fold increases compared to that of the ABPBFC without addition of OTC. The removal of nitrate was obviously accelerated by the addition of OTC with an initial OTC concentration lower than 20 mg/L. Increases in the concentration of OTC added to the biocathode did not result in continuous enhancement in power generation and nitrate removal due to the toxicity of OTC to biocathodic microbial community. Cathodic bioelectrochemical process enhanced photolysis of OTC, which was attributed to its contribution to basification of catholyte. The growth of some dominated genus related to biocathodic electron transfer, nitrogen removal and OTC degradation were stimulated at OTC concentrations less than 20 mg/L but inhibited at 50 mg/L, except for some OTC-resistant bacteria.

This study reports a high-performance 3D stainless-steel photoanode (3D SS photoanode) for bioelectrochemical systems (BESs). The 3D SS photoanode consists of 3D carbon-coated SS felt bioactive side and a flat α-Fe 2 O 3 -coated SS plate photoactive side. Without light illumination, the electrode reached a current density of 26.2 ± 1.9 A m −2 , which was already one of the highest current densities reported thus far. Under illumination, the current density of the electrode was further increased to 46.5 ± 2.9 A m −2 . The mechanism of the photo-enhanced current production can be attributed to the reduced charge-transfer resistance between electrode surface and the biofilm with illumination. It was also found that long-term light illumination can enhance the biofilm formation on the 3D SS photoanode. These findings demonstrate that using the synergistic effect of photocatalysis and microbial electrocatalysis is an efficient way to boost the current production of the existing high-performance 3D anodes for BESs.

Mixed ion–electron conductive (MIEC) bioelectronics has emerged as a state-of-the-art type of bioelectronics for bioelectrical signal monitoring. However, existing MIEC bioelectronics is limited by delamination and transmission defects in bioelectrical signals. Herein, a topological MXene network enhanced MIEC hydrogel bioelectronics that simultaneously exhibits both electrical and mechanical property enhancement while maintaining adhesion and biocompatibility, providing an ideal MIEC bioelectronics for electrophysiological signal monitoring, is introduced. Compared with nontopology hydrogel bioelectronics, the MXene topology increases the dynamic stability of bioelectronics by a factor of 8.4 and the electrical signal by a factor of 10.1 and reduces the energy dissipation by a factor of 20.2. Besides, the topology-enhanced hydrogel bioelectronics exhibits low impedance (<25 Ω) at physiologically relevant frequencies and negligible impedance fluctuation after 5000 stretch cycles. The creation of multichannel bioelectronics with high-fidelity muscle action mapping and gait recognition was made possible by achieving such performance.

Bioelectronics is an exciting field that bridges the gap between physiological activities and external electronic devices, striving for high resolution, high conformability, scalability, and ease of integration. One crucial component in bioelectronics is bioelectrodes, designed to convert neural activity into electronic signals or vice versa. Previously reported bioelectrodes have struggled to meet several essential requirements simultaneously: high-fidelity signal transduction, high charge injection capability, strain resistance, and multifunctionality. This work introduces a novel strategy for fabricating superior bioelectrodes by merging multiple charge-transfer processes. The resulting bioelectrodes offer accurate ion-to-electron transduction for capturing electrophysiological signals, dependable charge injection capability for neuromodulation, consistent electrode potential for artifact rejection and biomolecule sensing, and high transparency for seamless integration with optoelectronics. Furthermore, the bioelectrode can be designed to be strain-insensitive by isolating signal transduction from electron transportation. The innovative concept presented in this work holds great promise for extending to other electrode materials and paves the way for the advancement of multimodal bioelectronics.

Photo-bioelectrochemical fuel cell (PBFC) represents a promising technology for enhancing removal of antibiotic pollutants while simultaneously sustainable transformation of organic wastes and solar energy into electricity. In this study, simultaneous antibiotic removal and bioelectricity generation were investigated in a PBFC with daily light/dark cycle using oxytetracycline (OTC) as a model compound of antibiotic. The specific OTC removal rate increased by 61% at an external resistance of 50 Ω compared to that in the open-circuit control, which was attributed to bioelectrochemically enhanced co-metabolic degradation in the presence of the bioanode. The OTC removal was obviously accelerated during illumination of cathode in contrast with a dark cathode due to the higher driving force for anodic bioelectrochemical reaction by using photosynthetic oxygen as cathodic electron acceptor during illumination than that using nitrate in dark. The bioelectrocatalytic activity of anodic biofilm was continuously enhanced even at an initial OTC concentration of up to 50 mg L −1 . The degradation products of OTC can function as mediators to facilitate the electron transfer from bacteria to the anode, resulting in 1.2, 1.76 and 1.8 fold increase in maximum power output when 10, 30 and 50 mg L −1 OTC was fed to the bioanode, compared to the OTC-free bioanode, respectively. The OTC feeding selective enriched OTC-tolerant bacterial community capable of degrading complex organic compounds and producing electricity. The occurrence of ARGs during bioelectrochemical degradation of OTC was affected more greatly by the succession of the anodic bacterial community than the initial OTC concentration.

Wearable dry electrodes are the foundation for the development of long-term, real-time biopotential monitoring devices. However, the physiological signals collected by common electrodes often accompany high noise and motion artifacts due to difficulties in conforming to skin deformations and poor contact between electrodes and skin. In contrast to them, PEDOT:PSS-based dry electrodes become a promising material with adjustable stretchability, conductivity, and adhesion properties to achieve high-quality signal delivery. Herein, we report a highly stretchable self-adhesive film prepared by the conductive polymers PEDOT:PSS, ethylene glycol (EG), poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), and d-sorbitol (SOR). In the blending system, SOR will disrupt the dense hydrogen bond interactions within PVA and PSS chains, while PEDOT:PSS/PVA physically cross-linked networks can dissipate strain energy, providing toughness to the films. In addition, the hydroxyl groups on the surface enable the film to be self-adhesive by forming hydrogen bonds with the N and O atoms of the skin stratum corneum. The blended electrode exhibits a conductivity of 200 S/cm and an elongation at break of 120%. Moreover, the electrical properties are still maintained after cyclic stretching (R/R0 ≈ 1.09). The maximum adhesion force of the film on glass and skin is 1.20 and 0.36 N/cm, respectively. The electrode has good biocompatibility, and its excellent stretchability and adhesiveness are conducive to comply with the skin deformation under different conditions. The contact impedance between dry electrodes and skin is only 77 kΩ cm2, which ensures the accurate monitoring of physiological signals including electromyogram (EMG) and electrocardiogram (ECG) during rest or exercise. The signal quality is significantly higher than that of standard Ag/AgCl electrodes. This highly stretchable self-adhesive dry electrode provides a feasible idea for the research of next-generation health monitoring devices.

Coal seams are considered occurrence sites for coalbed methane (CBM) accumulation and bio-methanation and sequestration of CO 2 . Biological approaches for the enhancement of the methanation rate of CO 2 for CBM production have attracted increasing attention. The microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) is a technology with strong potential to improve the performance of the traditional anaerobic digestion (AD) system. In this study, AD and MEC-AD systems were developed to produce biomethane from coal. The results showed that the cumulative methane production of MEC-AD was 6.05 mL/g coal, 39.08% higher compared to AD alone (4.35 mL/g coal). The CO 2 concentration was lower in the MEC-AD reactor, suggesting that the CO 2 from coal degradation was further converted to biomethane. Metagenomics sequencing results showed that Geobacter.sp and Methanosarcina.sp were enriched in the anodic biofilm to the greatest extent, implying that direct interspecies electron transfer at the anode may promote biomethanation. Moreover, there was significant upregulation in the gene abundances of key enzymes involved in the degradation of aromatic compounds and methanogenic metabolism in hydrolytic bacteria. In particular, the gene pilA , which controls conductive pili, was significantly upregulated. The key intermediate metabolites (benzoic acid, phenol, pentadecane, etc.) showed a higher concentration and conversion rate in MEC-AD hydrolysis compared to AD. These results suggest that the efficiency of hydrolysis and interspecies electron transfer during coal digestion are facilitated by MEC technology, achieving a significant increase in biomethane production. This study provides insights into the development of efficient and low or negative carbon technologies for enhancing biomethane production and CO 2 emission reduction.

Bioelectronic implants featuring soft mechanics, excellent biocompatibility, and outstanding electrical performance hold promising potential to revolutionize implantable technology. These biomedical implants can record electrophysiological signals and execute direct therapeutic interventions within internal organs, offering transformative potential in the diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of various pathological conditions. However, challenges remain in improving excessive impedance at the bioelectronic-tissue interface and thus the efficacy of electrophysiological signaling and intervention. Here, we devise orbit symmetry breaking in MXene (a low-cost scalability, biocompatible, and conductive two dimensionally layered material, which we refer to as OBXene), which exhibits low bioelectronic-tissue impedance, originating from the out-of-plane charge transfer. Furthermore, the Schottky-induced piezoelectricity stemming from the asymmetric orbital configuration of OBXene facilitates interlayered charge transport in the device. We report an OBXene-based cardiac patch applied on the left ventricular epicardium of both rodent and porcine models to enable spatiotemporal epicardium mapping and pacing while coupling the wireless and battery-free operation for long-term real-time recording and closed-loop stimulation.

Biobattery, a kind of enzymatic fuel cells, can convert organic compounds (e.g., glucose, starch) to electricity in a closed system without moving parts. Inspired by natural starch metabolism catalyzed by starch phosphorylase, isoamylase is essential to debranch alpha-1,6-glycosidic bonds of starch, yielding linear amylodextrin – the best fuel for sugar-powered biobattery. However, there is no thermostable isoamylase stable enough for simultaneous starch gelatinization and enzymatic hydrolysis, different from the case of thermostable alpha-amylase. A putative isoamylase gene was mined from megagenomic database. The open reading frame ST0928 from a hyperthermophilic archaeron Sulfolobus tokodaii was cloned and expressed in E. coli . The recombinant protein was easily purified by heat precipitation at 80 o C for 30 min. This enzyme was characterized and required Mg 2+ as an activator. This enzyme was the most stable isoamylase reported with a half lifetime of 200 min at 90 o C in the presence of 0.5 mM MgCl 2 , suitable for simultaneous starch gelatinization and isoamylase hydrolysis. The cuvett-based air-breathing biobattery powered by isoamylase-treated starch exhibited nearly doubled power outputs than that powered by the same concentration starch solution, suggesting more glucose 1-phosphate generated.

Although hydrogel-based therapies have demonstrated promising results in treating volumetric muscle loss (VML), addressing diabetic skeletal muscle defects remains a major challenge due to the interplay of chronic inflammation and impaired regenerative capacity associated with diabetes mellitus. This study presents a novel multifunctional hydrogel bioelectronic conductor designed specifically for diabetic VML repair. The hydrogel, which self-assembles from mannose receptor-binding glucomannan, polydopamine-functionalized conductive polypyrrole, and gelatin, mimics the mechanical properties of native muscle tissue while providing immunomodulatory and electrocoupling effects. Multiple crosslinking mechanisms, involving both dynamic covalent and noncovalent interactions, endow the hydrogel with enhanced tissue adhesion (adhesion strength of 69.41 kPa to soft tissue), elasticity (100% self-recovery), and rapid self-healing ability (less than 1 min). The electrically conductive hydrogel-based elastic bioelectronics can reestablish effective electrical coupling with electroactive muscle tissue, while its intrinsic immunomodulatory properties induce M2-type macrophage polarization to alleviate chronic inflammatory response. In a diabetic rat VML defect model, the hydrogel bioelectronic conductor facilitated effective immunomodulation, muscle regeneration, and functional recovery of injured VML. These results suggest that the integration of tissue-mimicking mechanics with both immunomodulatory and conductive properties offers a promising therapeutic approach for diabetic skeletal muscle repair.

The combination of persulfate (PS) activation by iron ions with electrochemical process (electro/Fe 3+ /PS) is a promising advanced oxidation process. However, almost all these systems were performed in an unbuffered solution and actually under acidic pH condition, with the electricity being frequently supplied by external power. Considering the high buffering capacity of wastewater and energy saving, peroxydisulfate (PDS) activation by Fe(III) species with bioelectricity provided by microbial fuel cell (MFC) for bisphenol A (BPA) oxidation was investigated at fixed near-neutral pH as well as acidic pH. The results indicate that 90.8% of BPA could be removed at pH 2.5. Though the iron existed in the form of precipitate, BPA could still be efficiently removed at pH 6.0. The precipitate formed in the system at pH 6.0 was identified as the amorphous iron oxyhydroxides. Sulfate radicals in the bulk solution and that adsorbed on the precipitate were the dominant reactive species responsible for the oxidation of BPA in the homogeneous and heterogeneous MFC/Fe(III)/PDS processes, respectively. The mechanisms of BPA degradation at both pH values were proposed via EPR and quenching tests as well as XPS analysis. The effects of operating parameters, the mineralization, the mineralization current efficiency and energy consumption were also explored.
