CdTe quantum dots (QDs) encoded polystyrene (PS) microbeads were synthesized in this article. Two or three kinds of QDs with different volume ratios were mixed. The PS microbeads were conjugated with the mixed QDs based on the coupling reaction of the carboxyl groups of QDs and the
amino groups on the surface of PS microbeads. The prepared QDs encoded PS beads shown specific fluorescence emission wavelengths and fluorescence intensities, which could be used as the support of specific bio-recognition in liquid biochips.

Biometric electronics have gained considerable attention in self-sensing, three-dimensional (3D) designs, mechanical drive, and multi-function integration. By leveraging these anisotropic capabilities into devices, metamaterial offers a promising pathway to exciting performance-oriented units. However, such distinctive mismatches in forming processes and inherent material properties are severely restricted in achieving cross-scaled microstructures, causing compatibility issues among well-defined bio-functions and fabrication. Herein, we propose an investment micro-casting 3D printing strategy for custom-molding multi-metamaterials without process barriers. This approach handles the bottlenecks of the hierarchical template replacement in ultra-hydrophobicity microchannels for the free assembly of more than 20 types of challenging-to-form materials. A series of piezoelectric metamaterials are programmed with broadband ranges, imitating nerve distribution that has human-feel touch, bending, and recognition. Our work benefits the stiffness self-perception in dynamic grabbing manipulation, broadening the application of multimodal electronics in bio-embodied robots.

Biological staining is essential for imaging, functional investigation, and disease diagnostics. In this research, innovative green-emissive carbon dots (G-CDs) were hydrothermally prepared from 1,2,4-triaminobenzene and ascorbic acid (AA) and further explored for versatile imaging of mammalian cells, plant cells, and microorganisms. The G-CDs, exhibiting fluorescence enhancement, outperform conventional dyes in terms of staining efficiency and specificity across various biological systems. For mammalian cells (SH-SY5Y, Hep3B, and HEK293), the G-CDs can stain both the nuclei and nucleoli in 10 min via a micropinocytic endocytosis approach, with the latter brighter. Fluorescence enhancement was greater for RNA than for DNA. Interestingly, for plant cells, only cell walls were stained, because positive charges on G-CDs enable strong adsorption onto the negatively charged cell walls, thereby hindering their further entry. G-CDs can stain cell walls and nuclei for fungi (including Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus niger ), and cell walls and nucleoids for bacteria ( Bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coli ). The targeted staining arises from both the binding of G-CDs to DNA, RNA, pectin, peptidoglycan, and cellulose, and fluorescence enhancement due to surface passivation inhibiting rotation and vibration of functional groups. Electrostatic interactions, coordination, hydrogen bonding, and amidation collectively account for the interactions between G-CDs and these biomolecules . Finally, their practical applications in leucorrhea examinations demonstrated their capability to differentiate between bacterial and fungal vaginosis, highlighting their potential in clinical diagnostics.

Herein, we report a Fe3O4@polydopamine (PDA) nanocomposite and exonuclease III (Exo III)-assisted homogeneous fluorescence biosensing method for ultrasensitive detection of kanamycin (Kana) antibiotic. A hairpin DNA containing the Kana-aptamer sequence (HP) was first designed for the highly specific biorecognition of the target analyte. Because of the aptamer biorecognition-induced structural change of HP and the highly effective catalyzed reaction of Exo III, a large amount of fluorophore labels were released from the designed fluorescence DNA probe. During the homogeneous reaction process, the Exo III-assisted dual recycling significantly amplified the fluorescence signal output. Moreover, the excessive probes were easily adsorbed and separated by the Fe3O4@PDA nanocomposite, which decreased the background signal and increased the signal-to-noise ratio. These strategies result in the excellent analytical performance of the method, including a very low detection limit of 0.023 pg mL−1 and a very wide linear range of six orders of magnitude. In addition, this method has convenient operation, excellent selectivity, repeatability and satisfactory reliability, and does not involve the design and utilization of complicated DNA sequences. Thus, it exhibits a promising prospect for practical applications.

Multifunctional integration and heterogeneous surface integration are two crucial challenges in the in-depth use and development of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) in the wearable electronic field. A promising solution is to develop stretchable TENGs (STENG), which have the potential for microenergy supply and self-powered sensing. The key challenge is to endow its functional components with good deformability and realize heterogeneous surface integration. Herein, we proposed a fully stretchable, surface adaptable TENG using stretchable micro-nano hierarchical friction interfaces. It integrated microenenrgy supply and multifunctional self-powered sensing (i.e., bend, force, and frequency sensing) abilities successfully. The highly-linear sensing abilities endows the STENG with a good biometric ability. As an application, a STENG array based-stretchable wearable keyboard was proposed. It identified dynamic keystroke motions of all users with a Support Vector Machine, with a high accuracy of 93.21%. Besides, the intruders who were not sampled were distinguished from users, with an accuracy of 81.50%.

By the employment of a homogeneous biorecognition reaction to induce the assembled formation of DNA nanostructures at an electrode, herein we develop a novel biosensing method for the ultrasensitive electrochemical detection of kanamycin (Kana) antibiotic. A DNA complex consisting of Kana-aptamer and a hairpin DNA with an exposed 3′-end was first designed for conducting the homogeneous reaction with Kana in the presence of exonuclease I (Exo I). It resulted in the production of a hairpin DNA with a blunt terminus, which could be used for triggering the assembled formation of a layer of DNA nanostructures with orderly distribution and abundant biotin sites at a gold electrode. Then, high-content methylene blue and horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-functionalized gold nanotags would be captured onto the electrode to realize the electrocatalytic signal transduction . Due to the Exo I and HRP-assisted dual signal amplification, a very low detection limit of 9.1 fg mL −1 was obtained for the Kana assay along with a very wide linear range over five-order of magnitude. Considering the excellent performance of the method, it exhibits a promising prospect for practical applications.

Designing highly selective nanomedicines with precise recognition of biological interfaces for efficient cancer therapy represents a tremendous challenge. Inspired by the inherent chirality and enantioselectivity of organisms, we constructed dynamic chiral cyclic diselenide-conjugated paclitaxel prodrug nanoassemblies (CSEPNs) to simulate the chiral recognition process. The optimal chiral configuration with potent antitumor effects was screened by deconstructing the lock-and-key biorecognition of CSEPNs. Compared with R-(−)-CSEP, S-(+)-CSEP displayed steady chirality-dependent self-assembly due to the balance of intermolecular interaction and steric hindrance. With ring-tensioned backbone and superior chiral topology, S-(+)-CSEPNs exhibited ultra-high redox sensitivity and enhanced clathrin-mediated endocytosis. More importantly, S-(+)-CSEPNs presented the in vivo transport advantages of high tumor accumulation and low excretion rate. Finally, CSEPNs exerted robust synergistic tumor suppression through chemotherapy, tumor redox axis modulation, and tumor angiogenesis inhibition. These findings confirmed the dominant role of chiral lock-and-key biorecognition in determining the biological fate of the nanomedicines.

We report a low-cost and convenient microchannel resistance (MCR) biosensing platform that uses current signal to report biorecognition. The biorecognition behavior between targets and biometric molecules (antigens, antibodies, or oligonucleotides) immobilized on magnetic beads and polystyrene (PS) microspheres induces a quantitative change in the unreacted PS microspheres. After magnetic separation, the unreacted PS microsphere solution is passed through the microchannel, leading to an obvious blocking effect, resulting in an increase in resistance, which can in turn be measured by monitoring the electric current. Thus, the biorecognition is directly converted into a detectable current signal without any bulky instruments or additional chemical reactions. The MCR biosensing platform is cost-effective and user-friendly with high accuracy. It can be an appropriate analysis technique for point-of-care testing in resource-poor settings.

Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) is a real-time, label-free, and high-sensitive detection technology. SPR has been widely used in many applications such as biomolecular interaction analysis, environmental monitoring, and medical diagnostics. However, conventional SPR sensor systems usually require expensive equipment and complicated optics. In this paper, we have demonstrated a rapid prototyping of angle-scanning SPR for bioanalytical investigation. Rapid prototyping was attained by utilizing the FDM (fused deposition modeling) based 3D (three-dimensional) printing technology. Two rotating platforms were employed to drive the laser source and photodiode, respectively. A temperature regulation unit was incorporated to maintain the system temperature in order to reduce the temperature effect. The proposed SPR rapid prototyping yielded a refractive index resolution of 6.4×10 −6 RIU (refractive index unit), and the biotin-avidin system validated the kinetics parameters measurement capability. The obtained results indicated that the FDM 3D printing has great potential for developing rapid-prototyping SPR system.

A photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensing platform for chloramphenicol (CAP) detection was constructed using nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) as transducer species and label-free aptamer as biological recognition element . N-GQDs, synthesized via a facile one-step hydrothermal method , were explored to achieve highly efficient photon-to-electricity conversion under visible light irradiation . The obtained N-GQDs were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), which displayed a narrow size distribution with a mean diameter of 2.14 nm. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic (FT-IR) analysis confirmed that nitrogen was successfully doped in GQDs. The UV–visible absorption spectra indicated that nitrogen doping obviously enhanced the absorption of GQDs in visible light region. As a result, the PEC activity of GQDs was promoted by nitrogen doping. Additionally, the π-conjugated structure of N-GQDs provided an excellent platform for aptamer immobilization via π–π stacking interaction. Such an aptamer/N-GQDs based sensor showed a linear PEC response to CAP concentration in the range of 10–250 nM with a detection limit (3 S/N) of 3.1 nM. The developed PEC aptasensor exhibited high sensitivity and selectivity , good reproducibility and high stability.

Energy levels in organisms are closely linked to metabolic diseases, with ATP—the universal energy currency—playing a central role in this relationship. This paper presents a novel electrochemical biosensor for ATP, integrating homogeneous bio-recognition reactions with terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT)-mediated polymerization to enable precise ATP detection in metabolic research. Initially, a DNA oligonucleotide composed of a camouflaged aptamer and exposed hairpin DNA was designed to react homogeneously with ATP in the presence of exonuclease I (Exo I). This reaction generates blunt-ended hairpin DNA, which can activate the assembly of an ordered DNA-rich nanostructure layer on the gold electrode. Subsequently, the DNA strand is elongated through TdT-induced polymerization in the presence of deoxynucleotide triphosphates (dNTPs). A significant amount of Ru(NH 3 ) 6 3+ can be adsorbed onto the negatively charged DNA phosphate backbone via strong electrostatic interactions, effectively amplifying the detection signal and enhancing the sensor's performance. Under optimal conditions, the system exhibits excellent linearity over the target concentration range of 10 −2 to 10 3 nM, with a detection limit as low as 8.37 pM, enabling the detection of trace amounts of ATP. The biosensor demonstrates high stability and reliability, with recovery rates ranging from 97.8 % to 110 %. This method serves as a diagnostic tool to assess organismal metabolic status by monitoring ATP levels, enabling the tracking of metabolic disease progression. By integrating molecular monitoring with clinical diagnosis, it offers a potential approach for the preventing and intervention of metabolic diseases.

A magnetic bead (MB)-based sandwich biorecognition reactions is combined with a gold nanoprobe-induced homogenous synthesis of molybdophosphate to develop a novel bioassay method for the electrochemical detection of the tumor biomarker of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). The nanoprobe is prepared through the specific loading of numerous alkaline phosphatase (ALP)-functionalized gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) on a double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) produced by the CEA aptamer-triggered hybridization chain reaction (HCR). Both the large amounts of PO 4 3− produced by the ALP catalytic hydrolysis of pyrophosphate and the phosphate backbones of dsDNA can react with the added MoO 4 2− to generate electroactive molybdophosphates. So, the gold nanoprobe was used for signal tracing of the sandwich bioassay of CEA at a constructed antibody-functionalized MB platform. The sensitive electrochemical measurement of molybdophosphate produced from the quantitatively captured nanoprobes at a carbon nanotube-modified electrode (measured at about 0.12 V vs. Ag/AgCl, 3 M KCl) enabled the convenient signal transduction of the method. Due to the dually enhanced synthesis of molybdophosphate by the HCR and multi-enzyme Au NP nanotags, this method shows a wide linear range from 0.05 pg mL −1 to 10 ng mL −1 along with a low detection limit of 0.027 pg mL −1 . In addition, the MB-based biorecognition reaction and the homogeneous synthesis of molybdophosphate are much convenient in manipulations. These excellent performances decide the extensive application potentials of the method.
A magnetic bead-based bioassay method was simply developed for the electrochemical detection of carcinoembryonic antigen. The dually enhanced homogenous synthesis of molybdophosphate by hybridization chain reaction (HCR) and enzyme nanotags and the sensitive electrochemical measurement of molybdophosphate at a carbon nanotube (CNT)-electrode enable ultrasensitive signal transduction of the method.
