Most adult parasitoids depend on carbohydrate-rich food as an energy source for longevity, fecundity, and mobility. Thus, providing sugars has been proposed as a technique to maximize the biological control efficacy of parasitoids. However, the sugars provided for parasitoids need to be carefully selected because herbivore hosts might also benefit. Here we explore the effects of 12 naturally occurring sugars on the longevity and fecundity of the rice pest, Chilo suppressalis, and the longevity of its parasitoid, Cotesia chilonis, as well as the effect of sugars on sugar consumption of C. chilonis. Results showed that none of the tested sugars significantly impacted the longevity of C. suppressalis, but fructose, glucose, maltose, and sucrose significantly increased its fecundity. The longevity of C. chilonis was significantly increased when fed fructose, glucose, sucrose, maltose, trehalose, and melezitose. Our data suggest that C. chilonis consumed larger quantities of glucose, fructose, and sucrose followed by maltose, melezitose, and trehalose and the longevity of C. chilonis was positively correlated to sugar consumption. Our data also suggest that the herbivore C. suppressalis and its parasitoid C. chilonis responded differently to trehalose and melezitose. Although additional studies are needed, our data suggest that these sugars could be considered as candidate components for sugar sprays to enhance the activity and efficacy of C. chilonis, but without benefiting its pest host.

In recent years, biological methods have been used widely for controlling stem-boring pests in forests. In this study, the larvae of Xylotrechus rusticus (L.) (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) were infected with 4 strains of 2 species of Beauveria (Hypocreales: Cordycipitaceae). Larval detoxifying and protective enzyme activities were measured at different times after infection. The results showed significant differences in the pathogenicity of the 4 strains. The most virulent strain, Beauveria bassiana (Bals.-Criv) Vuill. strain BbCC01, caused 93.3% mortality, with an estimated LT50 of 4.69 d. The detoxifying and protective enzyme activities in larvae infected with strain BbCC01 changed significantly. To resist the infection, the activities of the detoxifying enzymes (carboxylesterase, glutathione S-transferase, and acetylcholinesterase) first increased and then slowly decreased. The activities of the protective enzymes (catalase, superoxide dismutase, and peroxidase) showed a similar trend. The enzyme activities peaked at 72 to 96 h post-infection. In this study, the B. bassiana strain BbCC01 proved to exhibit high virulence towards X. rusticus larvae. This research provides important information regarding the biological control of X. rusticus and elucidates the patterns of detoxifying and protective enzyme activities in the susceptible larvae.

The effect of calcium propionate (CaP) on post-harvest pathogens of winter jujube (Zizyphus jujuba Mill.), and on improving the efficacy of the biocontrol yeast, Metschnikowia pulcherrima, were evaluated. In vitro, CaP at ≥2% (w/v) had significant inhibitory effects on spore germination and germ-tube growth in Penicillium citrinum and Alternaria alternata. However, the application of 2% (w/v) CaP did not affect population growth of M. pulcherrima in nutrient yeast dextrose in vivo. With or without CaP, yeast cell numbers increased after 72 h by approx. 11.1-fold and 13.4-fold, respectively. The concentration of the antagonistic yeast suspension influenced the incidence of both pathogens and lesion development on jujube fruit, and the effect increased with an increase in yeast cell concentration. A combination of the antagonistic yeast plus 2% (w/v) CaP resulted in a lower incidence of disease and smaller lesion diameters compared to treatments with the antagonistic yeast alone. In this case, the incidence of disease was reduced by 16.8–27.3% for P. citrinum and by 25.2–31.4% for A. alternata. Lesion diameters on these fruit were 2.7–6.2 cm and 1.8–2.4 cm for P. citrinum and A. alternata, respectively. Calcium propionate had a consistent ability to enhance the biocontrol activity of M. pulcherrima against blue mould (P. citrinum) and Alternaria rot on jujube fruit. Thus, the application of 2% (w/v) CaP could be a useful approach to improve the efficacy of the antagonistic yeasts used for post-harvest disease control in jujube.

Soybean root rot, caused by Fusarium neocosmosporiellum , poses a significant threat to soybean productivity. Although chemical fungicides are widely used, their environmental risk necessitate sustainable alternatives. This study proposes an integrated control strategy combining the biocontrol bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa E1 - 23 with prochloraz. Initial screening of seven candidate bacterial strains identified E1 - 23 as the most potent antagonist, exhibiting 64.1% inhibition against F. neocosmosporiellum in dual-culture assays. Concurrent fungicide evaluation revealed prochloraz as the optimal agent (EC 50 = 0.1646 μg/mL). Compatibility analysis demonstrated E1 - 23's robust tolerance to prochloraz concentrations at ≤ 50 μg/mL. In vitro combination of prochloraz (0.25 μg/mL) and E1 - 23 (1 × 10 6 CFU/mL) achieved 91.86% pathogen suppression, surpassing individual treatments by > 10% and theoretical additive effects. Greenhouse trials confirmed enhanced efficacy, with integrated application increasing disease control efficacy by 34.35%—significantly outperforming standalone bacterial (18.96%) or fungicide (20.52%) controls. The qRT-PCR analysis revealed that the combination application of E1 - 23 and prochloraz up-regulated the expression of some defense genes of soybean plants 5 days post-inoculation (dpi), but the induced plant disease resistance was low. This study highlights the potential of E1 - 23-prochloraz as an eco-friendly approach to mitigate soybean root rot while reducing fungicide dependency.

The attraction of parasitoids to their hosts is a key issue in efforts to enhance biological control efficiency. This study was conducted to identify which rice plant volatiles are attractive to females of the rice planthopper egg parasitoid Anagrus nilaparvatae Pang et Wang (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae) by using Y-tube olfactometer behavior assays. Our results demonstrated that 10 of 17 selected volatiles – that is, 3-carene, linalool oxide, linalool, benzyl alcohol, benzaldehyde, methyl salicylate, ( E )-2-hexenal, ( E )-2-hexen-1-ol, ( E )-3-hexen-1-ol, and hexanal – from three major groups of rice plant volatiles – terpenoids, aromatic compounds, fatty acid derivatives – attracted female A. nilaparvatae at various doses. Two full-component mixtures of 10 behaviorally active compounds at different ratios were more attractive to wasps compared with individual volatiles. Blends composed of the 10 behaviorally active compounds in their optimally attractive doses (i.e., each in the dose that elicited the strongest response in the wasps) or at equal mass ratio may be considered as attractants for A. nilaparvatae and thus help to control rice planthoppers.

BACKGROUND Rice blast, caused by Pyricularia oryzae , is a devastating fungal disease threatening global rice production. Overreliance on chemical fungicides has raised environmental concerns and led to resistant strains, necessitating the development of sustainable alternatives. This study integrated marine microbiology and natural antifungal compounds to create eco-friendly alternatives to chemical fungicides for disease management. RESULTS We identified Pseudomonas aeruginosa R64 with broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity from mangrove soil in the Mai Po Nature Reserve. The R64 fermentation extract (RFE) exhibited multifaceted inhibition of P. oryzae , suppressing mycelial growth, conidiation, conidial germination and appressorial formation, while disturbing cell wall and membrane function. It also attenuated virulence by impairing appressorial penetration and invasive growth. Further chemical analysis identified phenazines and quinolines as the primary compounds in RFE, corroborated by PCR detection of corresponding phenazine biosynthetic gene clusters. Comparative bioassays with two main bioactive components of RFE, phenazine-1-carboxamide (PCN) and phenazine-1-carboxylic acid (PCA), against P. oryzae implicated PCN as the principal antifungal effector. RFE and PCN had higher efficacy than tricyclazole in P. oryzae growth inhibition, but were less effective than isoprothiolane. Furthermore, RFE and PCN displayed lower acute ecotoxicity to an environmental indicator organism than isoprothiolane, suggesting their potential as sustainable biopesticides for rice blast management. CONCLUSION Natural products from mangrove soil bacterium P. aeruginosa R64 inhibited key developmental and infection processes of P. oryzae , effectively reducing rice blast development. The promising disease inhibition and low ecotoxicity of mangrove-associated bacteria highlight their untapped potential for innovative, eco-friendly fungicide mining for sustainable agriculture. © 2025 The Author(s). Purpose: Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae causes bacterial canker of kiwifruit and is responsible for severe economic losses and emergence of drug-resistant bacteria. Bacteriophages are viruses that infect target bacterial hosts and may be the best strategy to prevent and control kiwifruit canker disease. The objective of this experiment was to monitor the prevalence of Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae and provide insight for the use of phages in biological control.Materials and methods: In this study, 52 strains of Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae were isolated from 68 stem samples of kiwi plant (cv. Hongyang & Jinkui). Following polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis, 15 isolates belonging to biovar 3 were identified, one of which was named XWY0007 and used as the target strain to isolate the phages. Thirty-six phages were isolated and purified from a total of 51 surface water samples collected in Shanghai. All phages were identified by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and their host ranges were evaluated. Three phages, designated φXWY0013, φXWY0014 and φXWY0026 were selected and further characterised using one-step growth curve and stability at different temperatures and pH.Results and conclusions: The isolated phages are promising for use as antimicrobials against bacterial canker in kiwi. This report is regarding Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae and its phages from major areas of kiwifruit cultivation.

Tomato wilt disease, caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici , is a major soil-borne disease affecting tomato cultivation. In this study, two strains exhibiting significant control effects on F. oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici and tomato growth-promoting effects were isolated from the rhizosphere. Through physiological and biochemical identification, as well as 16S rRNA identification, these strains were identified as Enterobacter quasihormaechei L33 and Klebsiella oxytoca TL2, respectively. And the two strains of bacteria were confirmed to have no antagonistic effect through antagonistic compatibility tests. Notably, when these strains were mixed in a ratio of 5:1, they demonstrated remarkable antifungal activity. The mixed strains induced mycelium swelling, necrosis, and rupture in F. oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici , resulting in a 56.65 % inhibition of mycelial fresh weight. Additionally, they inhibited spore production with an inhibition rate of 787.5 %, and the inhibition rate of the lipopeptide produced reached 93.80 % at 50 mg/mL. Furthermore, in potting experiments, the mixed strains reduced the disease incidence by 36.25 % after 8 weeks. Additionally, compared to the control group, the mixed bacterial strain group enhanced fresh weight, plant height, chlorophyll a and b levels, and root activities by 96.31 %, 18.51 %, 184.48 %, 53.03 %, and 44.31 %, respectively. In addition, mixed strains can inhibit the cell wall degrading enzymes produced by Fusarium oxysporum f sp., induce plant defense enzymes, including increased activity of peroxidase, catalase, and superoxide dismutase, and reduce the decrease in malondialdehyde levels. The mixed strains could colonize tomato plant roots. Overall, these findings suggest a potential biocontrol agent deriving from the mixed strains against tomato wilt disease.

Apple Valsa canker (AVC), primarily caused by the pathogenic fungus Valsa mali , is a devastating disease of apple. The development and application of high efficiency and low toxicity fungicides are of great significance for disease control. Natural active substances serve as a vital foundation for the development of novel green fungicides. In previous studies, the endophytic fungus Aa-Lcht was confirmed to contain specific inhibitory effect against V. mali . This study confirmed that Aa-Lcht fermentation broth (FB)’s suppression of V. mali growth and conidial germination, exhibiting AVC prevention. Through extraction, isolation, and purification, one active substance with high inhibitory effect on V. mali was obtained and identified as altenusin. Its concentration value for 50 % of maximal effect (EC 50 values) against V. mali mycelium growth was 3.118 μg/mL. Before V. mali infection, the lesion length of apple twigs and lesion area of fruits pretreated with altenusin decreased by 47.27 % and 80.52 %, respectively. Further research revealed that the hyphae of V. mali treated with altenusin exhibited irregular thickening of cell walls, severe vacuolation within the cells, and protoplasmic exudation. Meanwhile, transcriptome analysis indicated that altenusin primarily inhibited V. mali by interfering with the normal hyphal cell metabolism, substance degradation, peptidase activity, and proteolysis functions. Additionally, altenusin could also significantly up-regulate the expression of immunity resistance-related genes MdCYP81F2 , MdPR2 , MdPR4 , and MdPR5 in apple. Summarizing the above, the altenusin provides valuable insights for the development of novel green fungicides for controlling AVC disease, contributing to the safe and healthy development of apple production.

Gastrodia elata Bl. Is susceptible to infestation by the fungus Fusarium oxysporum , which can cause severe post-harvest diseases. This paper presents the findings of an investigation into the control and bacteriostatic mechanisms of Lactobacillus curvatus 2768-VOCs on F. oxysporum -infected G. elata . The results of both in vitro and in vivo tests demonstrated that L. curvatus 2768-VOCs exhibited inhibitory effects against F. oxysporum , with inhibition rates of 63.37% and 44.4%, respectively. The results of the in vivo test also demonstrated that the pre-fumigation approach exhibited superior efficacy compared to direct fumigation, with the former showing a preventive effect. Furthermore, it was discovered that VOCs disrupted the integrity of F. oxysporum cell membranes and altered their permeability, resulting in the leakage of cell contents. The fumigation caused damage to the mycelial structure, accompanied by a notable decline in the total lipid and ergosterol content, and an appreciable increase in MDA content. Moreover, the fumigation of VOCs markedly diminished the activities of ATPase and mitochondrial dehydrogenase, thereby disrupting the respiration of F. oxysporum and its energy metabolism. The VOCs were subjected to GC-MS analysis, which revealed that the relative content of acids was the highest, particularly formic acid and glyoxalic acid. The study offers a theoretical basis for the biological control of postharvest diseases in G. elata .

Bacterial leaf blight (BLB), caused by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo), is one of the most severe bacterial diseases in rice. The current BLB-prevention strategy depends on chemical antimicrobials. The biological control methods have gained considerable attention. Among them, Streptomyces are particularly promising candidates due to their ability to produce diverse natural antimicrobial and plant-growth-promoting metabolites. In this study, we isolated a Streptomyces strain HSW2009 from the rice rhizosphere. This strain displayed significant antagonistic activity against Xoo. The antagonistic metabolite was extracted and purified from the HSW2009 culture. High-performance liquid chromatography-mass chromatography and nuclear magnetic resonance analyses revealed that the active compound is Piericidin A1, a member of the piericidin family metabolites containing a 4-pyridinol core linked with a methylated polyketide side chain. Piericidin A1 was shown to protect rice from Xoo infection in the microclimate chamber. The strain HSW2009 produced pale yellow aerial mycelia on the agar plate of the International Streptomyces Project-2 medium. Its cellular morphology conformed to that typically observed in the genus Streptomyces . Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that HSW2009 was closely related to Streptomyces zagrosensis , S. youssoufiensis , and S. varsoviensis . HSW2009 displayed a unique DNA profile in BOX-PCR fingerprinting analysis and had a genome size of 8,806,972 bp, with a 72.83% G + C content. Average nucleotide identity analysis and digital DNA–DNA hybridization using the Type Strain Genome Server supported HSW2009 as a novel Streptomyces sp. It was therefore proposed as Streptomyces shaowuensis sp. nov., type strain HSW2009.

Starch, alginate, and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) were combined to prepare a semi-interpenetrating network (IPN) hydrogel with temperature sensitivity. Calcium chloride was used as cross-linking agent, the non-toxigenicAspergillus flavusspores were successfully encapsulated as biocontrol agents by the method of ionic gelation. Characterization of the hydrogel was performed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron micrograph (SEM), and thermogravimetry analysis (TGA). Formulation characteristics, such as entrapment efficiency, beads size, swelling behavior, and rheological properties were evaluated. The optical and rheological measurements indicated that the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of the samples was about 29–30 °C. TGA results demonstrated that the addition of kaolin could improve the thermal stability of the semi-IPN hydrogel. Morphological analysis showed a porous honeycomb structure on the surface of the beads. According to the release properties of the beads, the semi-IPN hydrogel beads containing kaolin not only have the effect of slow release before peanut flowering, but they also can rapidly release biocontrol agents after flowering begins. The early flowering stage of the peanut is the critical moment to apply biocontrol agents. Temperature-sensitive hydrogel beads containing kaolin could be considered as carriers of biocontrol agents for the control of aflatoxin in peanuts. Keywords:thermosensitive;biocontrol;aflatoxin;PNIPAAm;encapsulation
