3D printing of a living bioanode holds the potential for the rapid and efficient production of bioelectrochemistry systems. However, the ink (such as sodium alginate, SA) that formed the matrix of the 3D-printed bioanode may hinder extracellular electron transfer (EET) between the microorganism and conductive materials. Here, we proposed a biomimetic design of a 3D-printed Shewanella bioanode, wherein riboflavin (RF) was modified on carbon black (CB) to serve as a redox substance for microbial EET. By introducing the medicated EET pathways, the 3D-printed bioanode obtained a maximum power density of 252 ± 12 mW/m2, which was 1.7 and 60.5 times higher than those of SA-CB (92 ± 10 mW/m2) and a bare carbon cloth anode (3.8 ± 0.4 mW/m2). Adding RF reduced the charge-transfer resistance of a 3D-printed bioanode by 75% (189.5 ± 18.7 vs 47.3 ± 7.8 Ω), indicating a significant acceleration in the EET efficiency within the bioanode. This work provided a fundamental and instrumental concept for constructing a 3D-printed bioanode.

The anodophilic bacteria in the anodes of microbial fuel cells (MFCs) used to catalyze carbon oxidation are anaerobes and require anaerobic conditions; their bioelectrocatalytic activity will be greatly suppressed upon direct exposure to O2. In this study, an aerotolerant bioanode was fabricated for the first time by immobilization of anodophilic bacteria for use in MFCs operating under aerobic conditions. The fabrication of the aerotolerant bioanode was realized through the electrochemically induced penetration and propagation of anodophilic bacteria in a three-dimensional hydrogel scaffold. Under the protection of the hydrogel scaffold, the anodophilic bacteria exhibited excellent bioelectrocatalytic activity under continuous O2 aeration and delivered a current density comparable to that under anaerobic conditions. The MFC equipped with the aerotolerant bioanode has the potential to be applied to traditionally aerobic wastewater treatment (WWT) technology. This study offers new insight into the application of MFCs for WWT.

Redox polymer hydrogels have been proved to be very promising for biofuel cells design and electrochemical biosensing. Here we report that a facile hydrogel bioanode based on electron-withdrawing nitro-group tailored 1,4-naphthoquinone (1,4-NQ)-appended redox polymer and flavin adenine dinucleotide-dependent glucose dehydrogenase (FAD-GDH) can dramatically improve the catalytic performance of glucose oxidation , for which a high current density of 1.97 ± 0.06 mA cm −2 and low onset potential of −0.13 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) can be achieved in 50 mM glucose solution without using any nanomaterials as electrode supports. Further, both electron-donating groups modified 1,4-NQs and electron-withdrawing nitro-group 1,4-NQs were synthesized to investigate their electrochemical properties. It was found that the enhanced catalytic performance can be mainly contributing from the nitro group-modified 1,4-NQs appended redox polymer, which shifted the formal potential in the positive direction and provided sufficient electrochemical driving force for glucose oxidation. Finally, this hydrogel bioanode was combined with a bilirubin oxidase based biocathode to construct a single-compartment glucose/O 2 biofuel cell with a high power output of 0.28 ± 0.03 mW cm −2 and open circuit potential of 0.69 V. Moreover, the O 2 -insensitive FAD-GDH could improve the cell stability obviously compared with glucose oxidase based cell. This study provides an alternative route to develop glucose biosensor or biofuel cell for directly harvesting energy from glucose.

Microbial fuel cell (MFC) is an innovative technology to stimulate the anaerobic degradation of hydrocarbons and recover their chemical energy. Typically, for the hydrocarbon oxidation, its performance depends upon the activity of the bioanode. In this work, four anodic potentials pertained to the redox of four different membrane proteins of the microbes, namely -0.52, -0.35, -0.16, and 0.17 V vs. Ag/AgCl, were applied to tune the bioanode. Experimental results revealed that, the more negative the bioanode potential was, the more obvious the enhancement became. The biofilm tuned at -0.35 V exhibited a highest toluene removal efficiency of 99% (800 mg/m 3 ), and a maximum power density of 8.97 mW/m 2 with the Coulomb efficiency of 2.06%. The microbial community analysis indicated that the dominant microbes in the bioanode were Comamonas sp., Petrimonas sp., Sedimentibacter sp., Ignavibacterium sp. and Parachlamydia sp., which was almost unaffected by the applied anodic potentials. The cyclic voltammetry analysis showed that the bioanode tuned at 0.17, -0.16 and -0.35 V exhibited three completely different electron transfer pathways. Furthermore, three metabolic pathways with o -cresol as an intermediate were proposed under the four applied anodic potentials. These results demonstrated that the anodic potential acclimation offers an effective enhancement method for the gaseous toluene removal combined with power generation.

As a promising green and storage/conversion technology, the microbial fuel cell (MFC) was generally restricted by the lower power density in application. Three carbonized derivatives of the same precursor metal organic framework (MOF) MIL-53(Fe) were prepared via carbonization at 385 ℃, 600 ℃ and 750 ℃ in argon atmosphere. Experiments showed that carbonized MIL-53(Fe) (CM53) derivative at 750 ℃ produced Fe 3 O 4 /Fe@C structure and revealed the best performance as bioanode in MFC. As anticipated, the MFC with CM53–750/Ti anode demonstrated superb maximum power density of 1179.08 mW/m 2 , which was 88.04% and 36.24% higher than that of MFC with CM53–385/Ti and CM53–600/Ti anode. Moreover, the charge transfer resistance of CM53–750/Ti (0.23 Ω) bioanode in MFC was 90.49% and 87.29% lower than that of CM53–385/Ti (2.42 Ω) and CM53–600/Ti (1.81 Ω) in MFC. The BCA method and high-throughput sequencing proved that CM53–750/Ti bioanode exhibited good biocompatibility and the function of screening the dominant bacteria for electricity generation. The results were mainly attributed to the synergistic effect of derived carbon, iron and Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles (NPs). Fe 3 O 4 NPs and porous rod-like carbon promoted the enrichment and cultivation of microorganisms on the anode surface, while Fe NPs provided an efficient path for the transmission of extracellular electrons. This article proved that the carbonized derivatives of MOF have application potential in MFC.

Herein, we developed an efficient anode catalyst for alcohol biofuel cell by integrating multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) into an isoreticular metal organic framework derived porous carbon. The derived porous carbon (PC) intercalated by MWCNTs (PC/MWCNTs) serviced as the anode component in catalyzing the electrooxidation of reduced β-Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH), enabling catalysis to ethanol electrooxidation by alcohol dehydrogenase with NAD + as both free coenzyme and electron transfer mediators (onset potential, 0.14 V vs. SCE, pH 8.0). Hierarchy of PC/MWCNTs with micro-, meso-, and macropores provides improved immobilization of electroactive enzymes, aids the facile transportations of electrolyte and increases the conductivity and specific surface areas of anode and results in a much higher catalytic current density for NADH (1.17 mA cm −2 for 10 mM NADH, pH 9.0) and alcohol bioanode (maximum steady-state current density, 0.25 ± 0.03 mA cm −2 , pH 8.0) than its singular component analogues (PC and MWCNTs). The high Michaelis-Menten constant (166 ± 16.8 mM) favorites the detection of ethanol at high concentrations. The linear range of ethanol is 10–300 mM, with the sensitivity and detection limit as 24 nA mM −1 and 3 mM. The study applies porous carbon nanomaterials as both electrocatalysts for coenzyme and scaffolds for enzymes, benefiting to feasible constructions of bioelectrodes with notable current densities.

Water electrolysis to produce H 2 is a promising strategy for generating a renewable fuel . However, the sluggish-kinetics and low value-added anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) restricts the overall energy conversion efficiency . Herein we report a strategy of boosting H 2 production at low voltages by replacing OER with a bioelectrochemical cascade reaction at a triphase bioanode . In the presence of oxygen, oxidase enzymes can convert biomass into valuable products, and concurrently generate H 2 O 2 that can be further electrooxidized at the bioanode . Benefiting from the efficient oxidase kinetics at an oxygen-rich triphase bioanode and the more favorable thermodynamics of H 2 O 2 oxidation than that of OER, the cell voltage and energy consumption are reduced by ~0.70 V and ~36%, respectively, relative to regular water electrolysis. This leads to an efficient H 2 production at the cathode and valuable product generation at the bioanode. Integration of a bioelectrochemical cascade into the water splitting process provides an energy-efficient and promising pathway for achieving a renewable fuel .

Microbial fuel cell (MFC) is a promising device for water decontamination and energy generation. However, the correlation between power generation and pollutant degradation has not been clarified. Herein, a ruthenium–activated carbon (Ru–AC) bioanode was constructed for chlorobenzenes (CBs) treatment. The pollutant tolerance was improved by Ru–AC anode, and the minimum removal efficiencies of CB and ortho -dichlorobenzene ( o -DCB) reached 75.1 % and 69.3 %, respectively, which were considerably higher than those of other MFCs (16.3 %–39.7 %). Correspondingly, the maximum output voltage reached 360.7 mV for the Ru–AC anode, whereas the values obtained from others reached 45.2–149.6 mV. Interaction models were introduced to quantify the relationship between power generation and pollutant degradation. The conversion of highly toxic chlorophenols to organic acids could be accelerated by boosting the mass and electron transfer, thereby simultaneously enhancing CBs removal and power generation. This work provided important insights into pollutant-powered MFC development.

The structure and biocompatibility of anode materials significantly affect the performance of microbial fuel cells (MFCs). A biocompatible polyaniline–sodium alginate (PANI–SA) composite was prepared in situ oxidation polymerization on the 3D porous nitrogen-doped carbon nanotube/sponge (NCNT/S) to construct a high-performance microbial fuel cell in this investigation. The SEM showed that PANI–SA composite anode had a three-dimensional macroporous structure, and nitrogen-doped nanotubes were wound around the sponge skeleton, which had a large specific surface area, provided more places for the attachment and growth of microorganisms. A dual-chamber MFC equipped with a PANI–SA/NCNT/S bioanode to achieve a power density of 4380 mW m −3 , which was much greater than the other MFCs. During the charge–discharge time of 60–90 min, the PANI–SA/NCNT/S bioanode had the highest total charge value of 26,617.86 C m −2 , which was 3.23 times higher than that of NCNT/S (8231.87 C m −2 ). High-throughput sequencing results showed that the PANI–SA/NCNT/S bioanode exhibited high community diversity and selective enrichment of electrogenic bacteria. The excellent performance of the MFC equipped with PANI–SA/NCNT/S anode was attributed to the composite materials, which could be attributed to the large-pore network structure, better biocompatibility, large capacitance and high specific surface area. Bioanodes in a soil microbial fuel cell (SMFC) can serve as sustainable electron acceptors in microbial metabolism processes; thus, SMFCs are considered a promising in situ bioremediation technology . Most related studies have focused on the removal efficiency of contaminants. Relatively few efforts have been made to comprehensively investigate the organic matter composition and biodegradation metabolites of organic contaminants and microbial communities at various distances from the bioanode. In this study, the level and composition of dissolved organic matter (DOM), biodegradation metabolites of benzo[ a ]pyrene (BaP), and microbial communities at two sites with different distances (S 1cm and S 11cm ) to the bioanode were investigated in an SMFC. The consumption efficiency of dissolved organic carbon (R DOC ) and removal efficiency of BaP (R BaP ) at S 1cm were slightly higher than those at S 11cm after 100 days (R DOC 47.82 ± 5.77% at S 1cm and 44.98 ± 10.76% at S 11cm ; R BaP 72.52 ± 1.88% at S 1cm and 68.50 ± 4.34% at S 11cm ). More fulvic acid-like components and more low-molecular-weight metabolites (indicating a higher biodegradation degree) of BaP were generated at S 1cm than at S 11cm . The microbial community structures were similar at the two sites. Electroactive bacteria (EAB) and some polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon degraders were both enriched at the bioanode. Energy metabolism at the bioanode could be upregulated to generate more adenosine triphosphate (ATP). In conclusion, the bioanode could modulate the metabolic pathways in the adjacent soil by strengthening the contact between the EAB and BaP degraders, and providing more ATP to the BaP degraders.

Designing an artificial enzyme, from the perspective of bionics, to mimic the catalytic activity of natural enzymes is highly desirable but remains challenges. In response to the simulation of biological structure, we developed cytochrome c oxidase (CcO)-like single-atom nanozymes with FeN 5 active centers (FeN 5 SAs) in this work. Similar to the spatial structure of heme a 3 in natural CcO, the active center of FeN 5 SAs is axial N-coordinated heme-like structure and can be served as oxygen-binding site to complete oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in respiratory electron transport chain by catalyzing the oxidation of cytochrome c (Cyt c). Depending on this bionic structure, furthermore, FeN 5 SAs exhibited competitive electrocatalytic performance towards ORR with a half-wave potential of 0.67 V (vs. RHE) at neutral condition. Coupling a glucose dehydrogenase (GDH) bioanode , the FeN 5 SAs-based glucose/O 2 enzymatic biofuel cell (EBFC) obtained a maximum power density of 149.2 ± 4.0 μW cm −2 with an open circuit potential of 0.40 ± 0.01 V. In this study, inspired by the native structure of enzymes, we develop CcO-like FeN 5 SAs and expand its application in EBFCs, which may provide an rational research approach to advance the development of nanozymes.

With the emerging demand of implantable microelectronics, it essentially requires the fully integrated and reliable power supplies. The study reports a stretchable and flexible electrospinning-based glucose/O 2 biofuel cell with glucose oxidase bioanode, Pt/C cathode and thermoplastic polyurethane substrate, which is capable for adapting to the various stresses and strains caused by individual movement. The rigid benzene rings and elastic chain segments of thermoplastic polyurethane ensure its superior tensile property. Furthermore, the stable covalent connections between the activated carbon nanotubes (CNTs-COOH) and glucose oxidase inside 3D thermoplastic polyurethane network are established by amide reaction to ensure the rapid direct electron transfer of bioanode and stable power output of device in flexible environments. The biofuel cell exhibits an open circuit voltage of 0.575 V, and high-power density of 57 µW cm −2 in 5 mM glucose. Moreover, the power-generation properties of implantable biofuel cell keep steady, and its power density exhibits limited fluctuations on the dorsum of rat when bending, stretching, and twisting in 28 days. There is no obvious local inflammation or systemic abnormalities in rats. It satisfies the impressive biocompatible requirement, demonstrating the promising potential of electrospinning-based biofuel cell as a robust self-sustained power source for implantable electronics.
