Since hydrothermal aqueous phase (HAP) contains abundant nutrients and humic-like substances, it is developed as nitrogen (N) fertilizer to improve plant growth and soil quality. However, significant NH 3 volatilization is a major drawback in dryland soil. To solve this problem, a compound fertilizer of HAP and urea was modified with various dosage (0.25 % - 5.0 %) of urease inhibitor N-(n-butyl) thiophosphoric triamide (NBPT). The NH 3 , N loss, and lettuce growth were evaluated in parallel soil column and pot experiments. Results showed that increasing NBPT dosage increased soil dissolved organic N (DON) and ON while decreased NH 4 -N, NH 3 , N loss, urease activity, and ureC . NBPT successfully inhibited ammonification. Increasing NBPT dosage increased NO 3 -N but decreased PAO and AOA . The utilization rate of metabolic substrate (NH 4 -N) was more important for forming NO 3 -N, as evidenced by the negative correlation of NO 3 -N and NH 3 . The DON from HAP included N-heterocyclic compounds, which are toxic for nitrifiers. The toxic DON also significantly decreased root dry weight by 22.31 % when 5.0 % NBPT was added. The optimal additive dosages were 0.5 % and 2.0 % in the column and pot experiments, respectively, which decreased NH 3 and N loss by 45.38 % and 32.08 %. Further increasing NBPT dosage no longer decreased N loss but did harm to plant root. Therefore, this study demonstrated that an appropriate addition of NBPT to HAP fertilizer can effectively reduce ammonia volatilization and N loss. The innovative technique would promote the utilization of HAP resource within the context of sustainable dryland agriculture.

Improving photosynthesis and light capture using bio-based light-conversion films increases crop yield and paves a sustainable way to meet the growing global food demand. In this study, red-emissive carbon dots (RCDs) and blue-emissive CDs (BCDs) were trapped in biopolymers to develop a novel dual-excitation dual-emission light-conversion film (BRLCFs) with sandwich structure for efficient solar spectral conversion and promote photosynthetic efficiency of greenhouse plants. The middle layer of the film comprises polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), RCDs, and ascorbic acid (AA), which convert ultraviolet and green light into red light. The strong hydrogen bonding between the RCDs and PVA, including the antioxidant properties of AA, ensured excellent stability of the red light emission of the film. The edge layers, which composed of cellulose acetate and BCDs, converted ultraviolet light into blue light. This composition allowed the film to maintain exceptional photostability and morphological stability, even in high-humidity environments. In agricultural cultivation, BRLCFs significantly enhanced lettuce growth parameters, with a notable 21.89 % increase in fresh weight and 19.54 % increase in dry weight, highlighting the potential of BRLCFs to boost crop yield in controlled environments.

A graphitized magnetic biochar material, Fe-impregnated biochar (FBC), was synthesized using biogas residue, a product of food waste after anaerobic fermentation. The FBC coupled with ammonium persulfate (APS) exhibited excellent performance in the catalytic degradation of benzo[a]pyrene (BaP), a pentacyclic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH). In the FBC-APS system, the pyrolysis temperature of biochar, the initial pH, and the FBC and APS dosages were all influencing factors for Bap degradation. The FBC at the pyrolysis temperature of 700 °C performed the best catalytic performance, and FBC-APS efficiently degraded BaP at a wide pH range of 3–11. Results from quenching experiments, electron spin resonance measurement, and electrochemical analysis were used as the basis to propose the possible degradation mechanisms of BaP by FBC-APS, including the radical and non-radical pathways. The radical-induced oxidation was attained by SO 4 ·− and O 2 ·− . The non-radical pathway involved two aspects, one contributed by 1 O 2 and the other achieved through electron transfer. Five BaP intermediates were tentatively determined. Finally, FBC-APS was applied to BaP-polluted soil, and the overall degradation rate reached 91.7% after 72 h. Lettuce growth experiment showed that FBC-APS enhanced soil nitrogen and potassium availability and lettuce growth. In summary, FBC-APS application to soil can degrade BaP, improve the manurial effect, and solve environmental problems brought by biogas residues, that is, killing three birds with one stone.
