Preparation of a Hydrogel-Based Promoter for Methane Hydrate Formation: Effects of −SO3– Density on Promotion Efficiency

Fei Wang,Fu-Peng Song,Chang Li,Meng-Ting Sun

The natural gas hydrate (NGH) technology has aroused more attention due to its great promise in natural gas (mainly containing methane) storage and transportation. Micronized swollen hydrogel poly(styrenesulfonate-co-acrylamide) (PSS-co-AAm), which included ample −SO3– groups, could remarkably promote methane hydrate formation kinetics. To further improve the promotion efficiency of this hydrogel-based promoter, we optimized the monomer ratio, that is, the molar ratio of styrenesulfonate to acrylamide (MRSA), during hydrogel preparation and investigated the effects of −SO3– density on the promotion efficiency of the hydrogel. Results indicated that the hydrogel at an appropriate MRSA performed better at promoting methane hydrate formation kinetics. Hydrate formation processes within hydrogels at MRSAs of 1:2 and 1:3 reached the highest hydrate formation rates of 0.0741 ± 0.0132 mmol mL–1 min–1 and the highest storage capacities of 126.5 ± 9.35 v/v, respectively. At MRSAs of 1:1 and 1:2, hydrate formation processes occurred with short induction durations of 24.33 ± 25.73 min and 34.33 ± 59.47 min, respectively. This revealed that high −SO3– density could be in favor of accelerating methane hydrate formation. Additionally, −SO3– density could also influence absorption capacity and water distribution of the hydrogel, which further affected promotion efficiency in methane hydrate formation kinetics. This work might be beneficial to large-scale applications of the PSS-co-AAm hydrogel promoter and be significant for the industrialization of the NGH technology.

Promotion and inhibition effects of wax on methane hydrate formation and dissociation in water-in-oil emulsions

Shikun Tong,Pengfei Li,Fengjun Lv,Zhiyuan Wang,Weiqi Fu,Jianbo Zhang,Litao Chen,Xuerui Wang

Clarifying the effect of wax on hydrate formation and dissociation are important for the safe and high-efficient development of deep-water oil and gas fields. In this study, a series of experiments on the effect of wax on hydrate formation and dissociation in water-in-oil emulsions were systematically studied based on the variation analysis of temperature, pressure, torque, oil–water interface area morphology and water droplet size in emulsions. Microscopic images reveal that wax crystals form shell barriers on the oil–water interface, which increases transfer resistance, and the particle focused beam reflectance illustrates that the wax crystals decrease the water droplet size, which increases the oil–water interface area in emulsions. With increasing wax concentration, the hydrate induction time and growth rate show a bimodal shape because of the dual regulation of wax in emulsions, involving the inhibition effect of the transfer barrier layer and the promotion effect of the increasing water–oil interface area. The inhibition effect on hydrate formation was dominant when the wax concentration exceeds 6 wt%, resulting in a rapid decrease in both the growth rate and conversion ratio with increasing wax concentration. Compared with the bimodal shape of hydrate formation, the inhibition effect of wax on hydrate dissociation is the dominant regulation factor. The duration of complete hydrate dissociation by depressurization increased linearly with the increasing wax concentration, which increased the operation difficulty of hydrate plug removal. These experimental results provide valuable references for hydrate risk assessment and optimization of the project design of flow assurance for deep-water oil and gas fields.

Investigation on the reduction effect of QAs1 on the adhesion force between methane hydrate particles and wall droplets

Zhiyuan Wang,Pengfei Li,Shikun Tong,Jianbo Zhang,Chenru Zhou,Jihao Pei,Hemin Yang,Chenwei Liu

The adhesion force between methane hydrate particles and wall droplets is an important reference for studying the behavior of hydrate particles accumulating or detaching from the tube wall. In this work, a high pressure visualization microscopic force testing system was built to evaluate the effect of hydrate anti-agglomerants (AAs) in the methane gas phase. It was found that the hydrate adhesion force reached its lowest value at the QAs1 solution concentration of 0.2 wt% (CMC), and the adhesion force was 589.81 mN/m under 1 subcooling condition and 1123.63 mN/m under 10 subcooling condition. It was found that the mechanism of QAs1 in reducing adhesion force under lower levels of subcooling conditions is mainly to reduce the gas–water interfacial tension. The mechanism of action of QAs1 in reducing adhesion force under higher levels of subcooling conditions is mainly due to the steric hindrance effect of QAs1 molecules. The presence of QAs1 molecules on the droplet surface leads to the slowdown of tangential growth of hydrate film and the slowdown of thickening of hydrate film, resulting in a reduction in adhesion force. When the concentration of QAs1 solution is higher than the CMC, the steric hindrance effect of QAs1 molecules is no longer enhanced with the increase of QAs1 solution concentration, while the presence of micelles makes the hydrate easier to nucleate and makes the adhesion force gradually increase. These research data are useful to study the mechanism of action of quaternary ammonium salts as hydrate anti-agglomerants (AAs) and provide a basis for determining the optimal amount of additives for AAs used to prevent hydrate accumulation in natural gas pipelines, and for optimizing hydrate prevention solutions in deep-water gas wells.

A Highly Effective Inorganic Composite Promoter: Synergistic Effect of Boric Acid and Calcium Hydroxide in Promoting Methane Hydrate Formation under Static Conditions

Xiaochun Niu,Jinlin Zhong,Dongjun Lei,Haoyan Zhang,Weixing Wang

Water (H2O) is an ideal methane storage medium by forming methane hydrate (also known as “burning ice”) with a maximum gravimetric capacity of up to 154.9 mg g–1 for potential methane transportation. However, the formation rate of methane hydrate is very sluggish, which is the main obstacle for its potential commercial applications. Here we first demonstrate that an inorganic composite promoter (boric acid plus calcium hydroxide) is highly effective in promoting methane hydrate formation under static conditions with a gravimetric capacity of up to 131.8 mg g–1 which is very close to that of the organic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS, the benchmark promoter). We also show that employing inorganic alkalis to enhance the promoting effect of boric acid is a common strategy for methane hydrate formation. Furthermore, we propose that the excellent promoting effect of the inorganic composite promoters is due to the combined effect of boric acid, monoborate anion, and metal cation. Our work opens the door to a new era of highly effective inorganic composite promoter research and paves the way for hydrate-based methane (or natural gas) storage and transportation.

Study on the spatial differences of methane hydrate dissociation process by depressurization using an L-shape simulator

Jin-Long Cui,Li-Wei Cheng,Jing-Yu Kan,Wei-Xin Pang,Jun-Nan Gu,Kun Li,Ling-Ban Wang,Chang-Yu Sun,Xiao-Hui Wang,Guang-Jin Chen,Xing-Xun Li

The spatial difference of hydrate dissociation by depressurization was investigated in an L-shape hydrate simulator to enhance the exploitation efficiency of natural gas hydrates . Hydrates were found to dissociate slower near the mining well than far from the mining well due to the higher water saturation. The mass transfer rate of methane molecules in the water phase was much slower than that in the gas phase. In both vertical and horizontal directions, pore water migrated from the location far from the mining well to that near the mining well in the hydrate reservoir under the pressure difference. This led to a lower dissociation rate for the hydrate distributed at the location near the mining well, which was different from the results in gas/petroleum reservoirs and numerical simulations. The spatial difference was more pronounced in the vertical direction than in the horizontal direction. Gravity caused more water migration in the vertical direction, which led to more uneven dissociation of the hydrates. Sediments with higher permeability and lower mining pressure could result in more pronounced spatial differences. These findings can provide deep insights into the spatial evolution of multiple fields during the exploitation of natural gas hydrates .

Enhanced methane hydrate formation with SDS-coated Fe3O4 nanoparticles as promoters

Guo-Qiang Liu,Fei Wang,Sheng-Jun Luo,Dong-Yan Xu,Rong-Bo Guo

Nano metal fluids have been applied to promote the formation of natural gas hydrates . In this work, the sol of SDS@Fe 3 O 4 (named as SDS@Fe 3 O 4 ) were prepared and used as promoters in methane hydrate formation. Compared with SDS , SDS@Fe 3 O 4 produced much better promotion and the main superiority was that SDS@Fe 3 O 4 could significantly shorten the induction periods of hydrate formation. When SDS was used, the induction periods lasted about 40–60   min, while when SDS@Fe 3 O 4 was used at the same concentrations, hydrates nucleated within 10   min, especially, even no obvious induction periods were observed when SDS@Fe 3 O 4 was used in some experiments. Particle size showed significant influences on the promotion of SDS@Fe 3 O 4 to methane hydrate formation and smaller particles resulted in rapider hydrate formation. In addition, SDS@Fe 3 O 4 showed excellent repeatability during the hydrate formation-dissociation cycles.

Recyclable and high-efficiency methane hydrate formation promoter based on SDS-coated superparamagnetic nano-Fe3O4

Chen Chen,Haoyu Yuan,Xiaoming Wang,Yan Lin,Yan He,Fei Wang

Gas hydrate has been proposed as an effective medium for gas separation, desalination, gas storage and so on, yet the low reaction rate has been hindering the industrialization of hydrate-based technology . Hence various kinds of promoters, especially nano particles , have been introduced and investigated to increase the rate of hydrate formation. However, the recyclability of these promoters has not been given sufficient attention from an environmental friendly and economic point of view. In this study, a recyclable magnetic Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticle coated with SDS (SDS-coated Fe 3 O 4 ) was synthesized and successfully used for hydrate formation promotion as well as cycle experiments. The results showed that SDS-coated Fe 3 O 4 exhibited more efficient promotion for hydrate formation than bare Fe 3 O 4 in the studied concentration range. Especially, the induction time and reaction time can be significantly reduced to 77.6 ± 24.1 and 36 ± 3 min, respectively, and the methane storage capacity can be maintained up to 130 ± 5.9 v/v with the concentration of 20 g/L SDS-coated Fe 3 O 4 . Further comparison of bare Fe 3 O 4 and SDS-coated Fe 3 O 4 during cycle experiments showed that after 5 cycles, the methane storage capacity and reaction time in presence of SDS-coated Fe 3 O 4 can still be maintained as 119.5 ± 8 v/v and 110 ± 10 min, which were even better than the performance of bare Fe 3 O 4 just after two cycles. To sum up, SDS-coated Fe 3 O 4 can be recycled and reused many times for the hydrate formation, indicating that the SDS-coated Fe 3 O 4 has a potential to increase the recyclability and its economy for promoters in the hydrate-based technology.

Study on fluidizing the highly converted methane hydrate for gas storage and transportation

Peng Xiao,Jia Li,Hong-Liang Zhang,Guang-Jin Chen,Chang-Yu Sun

Fluidizing highly converted hydrate particles is a potential way for continuously producing gas hydrate in gas storage application. However, the fundamental problem is to prevent hydrate agglomeration while keeping a high formation rate. In this study, water–oil systems were used to investigate the feasibility of fluidizing the methane hydrate with fast formation rate. The formation kinetics and the slurry morphology of methane hydrate were systematically studied in the presence of single or commingled additives. Among the single additives, Span 20 provided the highest volumetric gas uptake of 177.7 V/V w (standard volume of gas per volume of water) at water cut of 20 vol%; with an increase in water cut, the volumetric gas uptake decreased and more hydrate agglomerated. All the single additives could not prevent hydrate agglomeration perfectly, even for Span 20, the best-performing single additive, prevented hydrate agglomeration well only at low water cut of 5 vol% and 10 vol%. The commingled additives comprised 1.0 wt% (to water) Span 20 and 2.0 ~ 3.0 wt% co-additives. When these co-additives were used in coordination with Span 20, most of them inhibited hydrate formation. By decreasing the concentration of TBAB from 5.5 wt% to 0.025 wt%, the inhibiting effect of TBAB faded away, while the anti-agglomerating effect remained. Similar phenomena were also found with some other co-additives. The results showed that low water cut, high Span 20 concentration, particularly the commingled additives could be solutions for fluidizing highly converted hydrate particles.

Promoting effect of activated carbon coupled with amino acids on methane hydrate formation for gas storage application

Shikun Tong,Yuemeng Ren,Yanxin Jin,Kele Yan

Solidified natural gas has obtained much attention in gas storage applications. However, the slow rate of hydrate formation and the requirement for agitation reactor restrict the technology development. In this work, we study the hydrate formation within activated carbon static reactor coupled with amino acids. The effect of four amino acids, three activated carbon particles and three water-to-AC ratio on hydrate formation was systemically investigated. The tryptophan has the best-promoting performance as promoter on hydrate formation. The conversion ratio and the maximum growth rate is 0.78 ± 0.04 and 23.78 ± 1.38 V·V−1·min−1, respectively. The large activated carbon particles and high water-to-AC ratio provide abundant granular lattice and free water to promote hydrate formation. Compared with the pure L-tryptophan solution system, the maximum growth rate of hydrate increased by 8.9 and 17.3% in middle activated particles size and large size coupled with L-tryptophan. The maximum growth rate of hydrate in the activated carbon static bed coupled with L-tryptophan is 24.2 ± 0.1, 27.9 ± 0.11, and 30.1 ± 0.12 V·V−1·min−1 at water-to-AC ratio of 0.3, 0.5, and 1, respectively. The combination of large-size activated carbon particles, high water-to-AC ratio and the L-tryptophan are very useful scheme designs. This research offers guidelines for process optimization in future large-scale methane storage applications by hydrate.

Experimental study on the effect of quaternary ammonium salt + monoethylene glycol compound to methane hydrate agglomeration in oil-water system

Qibin Zhao,Hao Liang

Natural gas hydrate has been a critical risk to the safety of offshore oil and gas well test and subsea transportation. Herein, the effect of three quaternary ammonium salt (QAS) surfactants with monoethylene glycol (MEG) to methane hydrate agglomeration in water-oil system was experimentally studied by a rocking cell. Based on the hydrate volume fraction and the slider trajectory, a classification method of the gas hydrate anti-agglomerants was established. All the QASs in this work show the capability of reducing hydrate agglomeration, among which N 1 ,N 3 -didodecyl-N 1 ,N 1 ,N 3 ,N 3 -tetramethylpropane-1,3-diaminium chloride (AA-2) has the best anti-agglomerating performance, and the slider moved at a large trajectory of 61–174 mm. The three QASs were compounded with 5, 10, and 15 wt% (based on water) MEG, respectively. Experimental results showed that AA-2 compounded with MEG (10 wt%) can effectively prevent hydrate agglomeration. The slider moved in the cell at the full trajectory range, showing the compound of grade A performance. The compound of QAS and MEG shows a synergistic effect. The addition of QAS can significantly reduce the required MEG dosage for the hydrate blockage prevention than the MEG only situation. Considering the economic factors of the filed hydrate management, the combination application of QAS + MEG may provide a promising option.

Intensification and kinetics of methane hydrate formation under heat removal by phase change of n-tetradecane

Xiaofei Song,Feng Xin,Hongchao Yan,Xingang Li,Hongri Jia

A method of direct heat removal resulting from the phase change of n-tetradecane was used to intensify the heat transfer during hydrate formation. The growth rates of methane hydrate in aqueous slurries containing 25–45 wt % of solid n-tetradecane were investigated at pressures between 4.70 and 6.46 MPa (gauge) and near the fusion point of solid n-tetradecane. Methane hydrate growth started at a practically constant rate, which became variable after a sudden increase. Two rate laws were established to correlate with the experimental data for the constant and variable rate stages. The methane hydrate growth rates achieved with solid n-tetradecane were significantly enhanced compared with those obtained under indirect heat removal. © 2015 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J , 61: 3441–3450, 2015

An approach to highly efficient filtration of methane hydrate slurry for the continuous hydrate production

Peng Xiao,Bao-Can Dong,Jia Li,Hong-Liang Zhang,Guang-Jin Chen,Chang-Yu Sun,Xing Huang

A continuous process for gas hydrate production is of great significance to hydrate–based technologies. In this study, filtrating hydrate particles from hydrate slurries, which is a key step for continuous hydrate production based on water–in–oil emulsion, was systematically studied. The specific resistances of the hydrate cakes formed from different emulsions and under different pressure drops were measured. The results showed that the specific resistance of the hydrate cake increased with the increase of the pressure drop in two stages, and it increased much more rapidly in the second stage. Increasing the concentrations of Span 20, TBAB and PE would increase the specific resistance. The resistances of the hydrate cakes formed with Span 20 + TBAB were much higher than that with Span 20 or Span 20 + PE. Calculation results suggested that only when TBAB with concentration ≥0.25 wt% was used as the anti–agglomerant, the filtration rate could not meet the requirement of a hypothetical production task. An approach that involves filtration mediums, additives and pressure drops was proposed to efficiently filtrate hydrate slurries for continuous hydrate production. Based on the results, a process for continuous hydrate production from water–in–oil emulsion was proposed.
