Perfecting large-area perovskite film coating technology remains a key challenge to commercialize perovskite solar cells. Herein, nontoxic dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is recommended as the only solvent to fabricate formamidinium (FA)–cesium lead halide perovskite by heat-assisted blade coating. DMSO effectively promotes the formation of α-phase crystals and improves the crystallinity. In addition, high substrate temperature is found to improve the film compactness, preferred facet orientation, and desired phase transition. Fast coating mode is adopted to inhibit ion migration and reduce the hysteresis of solar cells. Without any additives or surface treatments, the resulting perovskite film with chemical formula FA 0.75 Cs 0.25 PbI 2.7 Br 0.3 shows smooth surface, dense grains, and excellent crystallinity. The corresponding solar cells achieve efficiencies of 20.2% and 17.1% with active areas of 0.1 and 1.0 cm 2 , respectively. The unencapsulated devices maintain ≈100% and 70% of their initial efficiencies after 500 h of storage in air with relative humidity of about 25% and heating at 85 °C, respectively.

Formamidinium-cesium (FA-Cs) lead halide has attracted wide interest for enhancing the stability of perovskite solar cells; however, the crystallization of FA-Cs perovskite usually suffers from more complicated intermediate phase transition processes. Herein, we have developed a dual-functional additive consisting of organic ammonium cation and dithiocarbamate anion to regulate the crystallization and defects of the FA-Cs perovskite film. With a synergistic contribution of the cationic and anionic groups, 24.25% efficiency has been achieved in a single cell with excellent operational stability. Under steady-state light illumination and bias voltage, 90% power output of its initial state can still be obtained after 500 h of continuous operation. After enlarging the device from single cell to module, >20.5% efficiency has been realized from a 10.4 cm 2 minimodule by using only an ultralow-cost laser scribing technology. Briefly, this exploitation of cation-anion synergistic effect from dual-functional additives provides more opportunities for promoting the development of perovskite solar cells.

Formamidinium–cesium (FA-Cs) perovskites are an attractive candidate for perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with high stability, but they tend to suffer from high intrinsic defect density, especially at grain boundaries. Herein, a common heterocyclic conjugated molecule, orotic acid (ORO), was employed as a novel bifunctional additive to simultaneously achieve crystallization regulation and defect passivation of an FA-Cs perovskite toward efficient and stable PSCs. ORO was introduced to an FA-Cs perovskite precursor solution as an effective coordination-induced crystallization regulator to improve the grain size and crystallinity. Furthermore, under the assistance of π electrons, its carboxyl group bonded with undercoordinated Pb2+ defects at grain boundaries, and it was also able to form hydrogen bonds with undercoordinated I– defects, thus significantly reducing defect density. The average power conversion efficiency of the produced PSC devices with the ORO additive was promoted from 17.81% for the control PSCs to 19.32%, and a champion efficiency of 20.62% with negligible hysteresis was achieved. Additionally, the optimized devices exhibited high resistance to moisture incursion, leading to decent environmental stability. This work provides a convenient yet efficient approach to improve crystallization and passivate defects toward PSCs with enhanced efficiency and stability.

The formation of a homogeneous passivation layer based on phase-pure two-dimensional (2D) perovskites is a challenge for perovskite solar cells, especially when upscaling the devices to modules. Here we reveal a chain-length-dependent and halide-related phase separation problem of 2D perovskite growing on top of three-dimensional perovskites. We demonstrate that a homogeneous 2D perovskite passivation layer can be formed upon treatment of the perovskite layer with formamidinium bromide in long-chain ( >10) alkylamine ligand salts. We achieve champion active-area efficiencies of 25.61%, 24.62% and 23.60% for antisolvent-free processed small- (0.14 cm 2 ) and large-size (1.04 cm 2 ) devices and mini-modules (13.44 cm 2 ), respectively. This passivation strategy is compatible with printing technology, enabling champion aperture-area efficiencies of 18.90% and 17.59% for fully slot-die printed large solar modules with areas of 310 cm 2 and 802 cm 2 , respectively, demonstrating the feasibility of the upscaling manufacturing.

Formamidinium cesium (FACs) perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with the exclusion of methylammonium (MA) cations often have greatly improved device stability; however, their inferior performance compared with MA-based devices has impeded the real application. Among various device engineering strategies, bottom interfacial engineering is a promising method to simultaneously achieve the passivation of interfacial defects and the crystallization control of perovskite. Herein, a simple and effective bottom interfacial design is presented to improve the efficiency and stability of FACs PSCs by capping o-phenanthroline derivatives on the ZnO electron transporting layer (ETL). The most efficient modifier, 4,7-Dichloro-1,10-phenanthroline (Cl-phen), can improve the crystallinity of the perovskite film by chlorinated surface and passivate the defects of ZnO by reducing surface hydroxyl groups and oxygen vacancies. In addition, Cl-phen modified ZnO shows better energy alignment with FACs perovskite and increases the built-in electric field cascade by 80 mV. As a result, a champion device efficiency of 21.15% is obtained using ZnO/Cl-phen bilayer ETL. The stability has also been improved using ZnO/Cl-phen bilayer ETL, in which 91.5% of initial PCE is retained after 1500 h of storage at ambient environment (RH: 40–50%) without encapsulation.
