Boosting CO2 hydrogenation to methanol by adding trace amount of Au into Cu/ZnO catalysts

Guiming Xie,Rongrong Jin,Pengju Ren,Yunming Fang,Runduo Zhang,Zhou-jun Wang

Boosted CO 2 hydrogenation to methanol was achieved by introducing appropriate amount of Au into conventional Cu-based catalysts. The Au x Cu/ZnO bimetallic catalysts with various Au/Cu molar ratio (x = 0.001, 0.005, 0.02 and 0.05) were prepared by the co-precipitation method, among which the Au 0.005 Cu/ZnO catalyst exhibited the highest methanol production rate. The formation of Au-Cu alloy was identified on the Au x Cu/ZnO bimetallic catalysts. Experimental characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggested metal-oxide interfaces with oxygen vacancies as intrinsic active sties for both un-promoted and Au-promoted Cu/ZnO catalysts. The promotion effect of Au in bimetallic catalysts was correlated with the increase of active sites, facilitation of CO 2 activation and modification of intermediate adsorption. The present work for the first time develops a promising Au 0.005 Cu/ZnO bimetallic catalyst with trace amount of Au (only 0.4 wt%) and provides insight into the reaction mechanism over Au-promoted Cu/ZnO catalysts for methanol synthesis via CO 2 hydrogenation.

Photoelectrocatalytic Reduction of CO2 for Efficient Methanol Production: Au Nanoparticles as Electrocatalysts and Light Supports

Weiwei Lu,Fengyang Ju,Kaisheng Yao,Xuefeng Wei

Conversion of CO2 into value-added fuels and chemicals faces the challenges of high overpotential, low selectivity for desired products, and sluggish multi-electron transfer kinetics. Plasmon-mediated electrocatalytic methods show potential for overcoming these problems. In this work, choosing Au nanoparticles (NPs) as the dual-functional material of the electrocatalyst and plasmonic support, methanol can be efficiently produced from CO2 reduction. The dependences of current density and Faradaic efficiency (FE) on the Au NP size, light wavelength, and light density are systematically investigated. The performance test results show that CH3OH with FE as high as 52% can be obtained at a potential of −0.8 V (vs RHE) when a 20.2 nm Au NP-modified glass carbon electrode is under excitation using 520 nm light with a light density of 120 mW/cm2. The performance results, along with the discrete dipole approximation calculation and electrochemical characterizations, suggest that the efficient activation of CO2 by plasmon-generated energetic electrons accounts for the enhanced conversion rate and the high selectivity for CH3OH production.

Ni-Doped In2O3 Photothermal Coupling Catalyzed Boosted Carbon Dioxide Hydrogenation to Methanol

Guolin Zhang,Qi Xu,Hui Huang,Fei Zhou,Liangyun Yu,Qi Chen,Jiarong Yang,Yanli Xiao,Qi Zhang

The extensive use of fossil fuels has resulted in large amounts of carbon dioxide being emitted into the air and has led to a number of environmental problems. Given the abundance of both carbon dioxide and sunlight in the earth’s atmosphere, converting solar energy into chemical energy by photothermally catalyzing carbon dioxide hydrogenation to produce methanol is a potential strategy. By using the coprecipitation approach, a Ni-doped In2O3 catalyst was created, and its compositional valence, morphology, specific surface area, band gap, and other properties were assessed by XRD, XPS, TEM, BET, H2-TPR, CO2-TPD, and UV–vis characterization. Methanol production from carbon dioxide hydrogenation is stable and effective under lower pressure (1 MPa) photothermal settings, with an efficiency of 63.4 gMeOHh–1kgcat–1, which is approximately 120% higher than that of pure In2O3 under the same circumstances.

Nanoscale Confinement of Indium Oxide for Enhanced CO2 Hydrogenation to Methanol

Xiarui Yan,Junsheng Chen,Zhaorui Kong,Xinyi Wan,Youmin Hou,Bin Hua

Research on CO2 hydrogenation catalysts, particularly In2O3-based materials, is crucial for developing sustainable CO2 utilization and chemical production technologies, contributing to a cleaner future. We address the critical challenge of efficient and stable CO2 conversion by developing a novel Zr-doping strategy to enhance In2O3 catalyst performance for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol. Our key contribution is identifying the nanoscale confinement effect as crucial for optimizing both the activity and stability of In2O3 catalysts. By leveraging this nanoscale confinement effect, we have precisely controlled the size, dispersion, and reducibility of In2O3 nanoparticles, resulting in the formation and stabilization of highly active In2O3–x with oxygen vacancies. This confinement also effectively suppresses In0 migration and sintering, dramatically improving catalyst stability. The resulting Zr-doped catalysts exhibit significantly higher activity and stability compared to the undoped In2O3/ZrO2 catalyst, achieving a remarkable space-time yield of 4.708 gMeOH gIn–1 h–1 and demonstrating durability under industrially relevant conditions. This discovery offers a promising new direction for the rational design of high-performance CO2 hydrogenation catalysts and lays the foundation for future advances in sustainable catalysis.

Experimental and theoretical study of Pd-Pt/In2O3 bimetallic catalysts for enhancing methanol production from CO2

Junxin Guo,Zhenyu Wang,Tongtong Gao,Zhao Wang

Binary Pd/In 2 O 3 and Pt/In 2 O 3 catalysts exhibit technological potential in CO 2 methanol synthesis. However, the key to achieving high productivity lies in resolving the unfavorable Pd-In alloy and Pt nanoparticles formation during the reaction. In this study, we present the surface restructuring of Pd-Pt/In 2 O 3 catalysts under CO 2 hydrogenation conditions. Detailed quasi-operando characterization and theory calculation reveal stable reconstruction driven by Pt with Pd. The bimetallic Pd-Pt inhibits the formation of both Pd-In alloy and Pt nanoparticles. Moreover, this restructuring process generates more oxygen vacancies during the reaction. These oxygen vacancies promote electron transfer from the indium oxide surface to the Pd-Pt clusters. Consequently, a shift occurs from interface-induced CO 2 adsorption to cluster-induced adsorption. Thereby, the STY of methanol on Pd-Pt/In 2 O 3 at 300 °C increased by approximately 20 % compared to that on Pd/In 2 O 3 along. The findings highlight the crucial role of component-induced restructuring and oxygen vacancies in influencing the change of adsorption sites.

Phosphorus Quantum Dots-Facilitated Enrichment of Electrons on g-C3N4 Hollow Tubes for Visible-Light-Driven Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide Regeneration

Dong Yang,Yishan Zhang,Hongjian Zou,Shaohua Zhang,Yizhou Wu,Ziyi Cai,Jiafu Shi,Zhongyi Jiang

Nicotinamide cofactors (e.g., NADH) are essential hydrogen sources for the majority of enzyme reduction reactions. Currently, highly efficient and in situ cofactor regeneration is urgently required but remains challenging. In this study, red phosphorus quantum dots were decorated onto graphitic carbon nitride hollow tubes to prepare high-performance heterojunction photocatalyst (g-C3N4-HTs@rP-QDs) for visible-light-driven NADH regeneration. Energy band analysis combined with photoelectrochemical measurements demonstrates rP-QDs not only act as additional photosensitizers for charge generation but also constitute a type II heterojunction with g-C3N4-HTs for charge transfer, facilitating enrichment of electrons on the g-C3N4-HTs surface. Such enrichment of electrons for g-C3N4-HTs@rP-QDs offers ∼5 times higher reducing active sites than bulk g-C3N4 to trigger the NADH regeneration reaction under visible-light (LED, 405 nm) illumination, thus acquiring superior NADH regeneration efficiency with an initial reaction rate (2 min) of 0.247 ± 0.012 mmol g–1 min–1. In the concerned experimental range, higher g-C3N4-HTs/rP-QDs mass ratios or light intensities that are beneficial for the electron enrichment could result in enhanced regeneration efficiency. The bioactivity of NADH toward enzyme catalysis is further demonstrated by alcohol dehydrogenase-catalyzed hydrogenation of formaldehyde, which enables the sustainable production of methanol.

Boosting Solar Methanol Production over Hierarchical Carbon Nanocage-Supported In2O3–x via Photoenhanced Electron Buffering Effect

Xudong Dong,Zhijie Zhu,Zhijie Chen,Zixuan Sun,Shuairen Qian,Zidi Wang,Yuxuan Zhou,Kaiqi Nie,Shuang Liu,Zimu Li,Mengqi Xiao,Jinpan Zhang,Binhang Yan,Yi Cheng,Chaoran Li,Xiaohong Zhang,Xingda An,Kai Feng,Zheng Hu,Le He

Solar methanol production represents a key technology meaningful for the production of liquid fuels as well as carbon neutralization. However, it is faced with the crucial challenge of limited reaction rate, selectivity, and stability. In this study, we develop a hierarchical carbon nanocage (hCNC)-supported In2O3 synergistic catalyst for robust methanol production driven solely by sunlight. hCNC plays a unique role as “electron buffers” for dynamic modulation of the oxygen vacancy (Ov) concentration in In2O3, addressing the long-standing challenge of Ov-induced destabilization. Notably, the photoenhanced electron buffering enables both electron transfer toward Ov-deficient In2O3, promoting Ov generation, and electron extraction from Ov-rich In2O3–x, preventing over-reduction. Consequently, both the high- and low-energy photons in the solar spectrum were harvested toward synergistic photothermal/photochemical catalysis, achieving a record-high methanol production rate of 4.6 mmol·gcat–1·h–1 with >51% selectivity. Our discovery of the photoenhanced electron buffering provides a perspective for dynamic modulation of nonthermal photocatalytic mechanisms; besides, the synergistic combination of photochemical and photothermal pathways also provides important guidelines for efficient solar methanol production.
