Starch adhesives are often used in the plywood sector. They are sustainable, formaldehyde-free, and biodegradable. However, the problems of poor gluing strength and hydrophobicity need to be overcome. In this study, natural starch was oxidized by sodium persulfate to obtain oxidized starch. Oxidized starch adhesive (SSA-15%) was crosslinked with PVA. The results show that the dry and wet shear strength of the prepared oxidized starch adhesive (SSA-15%) can reach 2.95 MPa and 1.31 MPa, which is 163% and 120% higher than that of the natural starch adhesive. Sodium persulfate causes the large number of hydrophilic hydroxyl groups in starch to oxidize directly to carboxyl groups, improving the hydrophobicity of starch. The hydroxyl group present in oxidized starch interacts with the secondary hydroxyl group in PVA to form a hydrogen bond. This interaction enhances the adhesive bonding performance, resulting in improved mechanical properties and increased bonding strength of the final products, while also contributing to the formation of a more robust network structure. The study showed that the oxidized adhesive has good hydrophobicity and storage thermal stability. It is a simple and green biomass wood adhesive, which provides theoretical support for the promotion and application of aldehyde-free adhesives.

Cotton fabrics are extremely flammable. Therefore, ammonium salt of dipentaerythritol hexaphosphoric acid (ADPHPA), a novel reactive phosphorus flame retardant without halogen and formaldehyde, was synthesized by solvent-free synthesis method. Surface chemical graft modification was chosen to introduce flame retardant, imparting its flame retardancy and washability. SEM indicated that ADPHPA entered the interior of cotton fiber, which was grafted with OH of control cotton fabrics (CCF) by forming P O C covalent bonds to obtain treated cotton fabrics (TCF). There were no apparent differences in the fiber morphology and crystal structure after treatment according to SEM and XRD analysis. TG analysis demonstrated that the decomposition process of TCF was changed compared with CCF, while lower heat release rate and total heat release of TCF indicated its combustion efficiency was also reduced based on cone calorimetry test. Meanwhile, in the durability test, TCF had undergone 50 laundering cycles (LCs) in accordance with AATCC-61-2013 3A standard and had a short vertical combustion charcoal length, which were able to be regard as durable flame-retardant fabrics. The mechanical properties of TCF decreased to a degree, but did not affect the actual use of cotton fabrics. Taken as a whole, ADPHPA has research significance and development potential as a durable phosphorus-based flame retardant.

Formaldehyde-free liquid adhesives derived from biomass are attractive candidates to petroleum-based counterparts. However, developing solid bio-adhesive with excellent wet strength and bonding performances remains a lasting challenge. Here, we report a bio-composite sheet consisting of soybean flour , paper, and cross-linking agent (Polyamidoamine-epichlorohydrin, PAE), and its wet strength and bonding performances was evaluated by paper straw and plywood application. The covalent crosslinking by the reaction of soybean protein and PAE plays a major role in the enhancement of various properties of the cured bio-composite sheet. The tensile stress of cured bio-composite sheet was only lower than the prototype sample 14.5% after 100 ℃ water soaking treatment for 2 h. Paper straw rolled from the bio-composite sheet displayed boiling water stable at the same condition, while had better flexural strength and natural degradability than the plastic straw. Bonding strength of plywood boned with bio-composite sheet reached 1.38 MPa, which was exceeded 97.1% than the requirement of the Chinese National Standard GB/T 9846–2015 for interior plywood. Given the simple and general strategy, the products based on bio-composite sheet can potentially be a new approach on the use of biomass adhesives, which also be a suitable solution to solve the environmental challenges (e.g., formaldehyde) in the field of biomass-based composites.

Conventional adhesives used in wood-based panels typically contain volatile organic compounds, including formaldehyde, which can potentially lower indoor air quality and damage human health. Lignin, a natural adhesive present in wood, offers significant advantages over other materials due to its ready availability, renewable nature, rich aromatic rings, and aliphatic and aromatic hydroxyl groups, as well as quinone groups. However, when modified as an adhesive for wood-based panels, lignin suffers from poor water resistance and formaldehyde release. Dehydrogenation polymer (DHP), as a lignin model compound, possesses a structure similar to lignin and excellent water resistance, making it a potential substitute for lignin as a formaldehyde-free adhesive. A DHP-xylose complex was obtained from a condensation reaction between DHP and xylose in hemicellulose in a simulated hot-pressing environment. The feasibility of DHP bonding with hemicellulose components was verified using FT-IR and NMR spectroscopic methods. In addition, the structure of the adduct and condensation process were also studied. DHP and xylose underwent condensation under simulated hot-pressing conditions. Xylose and DHP may be linked by C-C bonds. The thermal condensation of DHP with xylose was investigated. This may contribute to a better understanding of the adhesive bonding process for xylose during hot-pressing and offer support for practical applications.

The preparation of traditional wood-based panels mostly uses adhesives such as urea-formaldehyde resin and phenolic resin, which not only consumes petrochemical resources but also releases formaldehyde, posing potential health risks to the human body. Lignin, a natural adhesive in plant cells, is characterized by high reactivity, and it is expected to aid in the development of a new generation of green formaldehyde-free adhesives. However, current studies of lignin adhesives have revealed that while strides have been made in reducing formaldehyde emissions, its residual presence remains a concern, an issue which is compounded by inadequate water resistance. Dehydrogenated Polymer (DHP) has a lignin-like structure and good water resistance, offering a new option for the development of formaldehyde-free adhesives. In this paper, DHP and glucuronic acid were reacted with each other in a simulated hot-pressing environment to obtain DHP-glucuronic acid complex, and then the structure of the complex was characterized by infrared nuclear magnetic resonance to verify whether DHP can be efficiently connected with hemicellulose components under hot-pressing conditions. The results showed that the thermal condensation reaction of DHP and glucuronic acid can generate ester bonds at the Cα position in a simulated hot-pressing environment. This paper explores the thermal condensation mechanism of DHP and glucuronic acid, which is helpful for understanding the bonding process between adhesives and components of wood-based panels in the hot-pressing process, and provides key theoretical support for the design of more sustainable lignin adhesives.

Most phenolic resins are synthesized with non-renewable petroleum-based phenol and formaldehyde, which have adverse effects on the environment and human health. To achieve green and sustainable production of phenolic resins, it is important to replace non-renewable toxic phenol and formaldehyde. Herein, a new strategy was proposed to completely replace phenol and formaldehyde, using lignin-derived monomers to synthesize renewable phenolic resins. Lithium aluminum hydride was utilized to reduce lignin-derived monomers, including vanillin , methyl vanillate, and syringaldehyde, to generate the corresponding vanillyl and syringic alcohol. With oxalic acid as the catalyst, vanillyl and syringic alcohol could be polymerized to phenolic resins without using formaldehyde. The structure of the phenolic resins based on lignin-derived monomers was analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and 13 C and 31 P nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis were performed to characterize the thermal properties of the phenolic resins. The phenolic resins based on lignin-derived monomers exhibited excellent adhesion strength (6.14 MPa), glass transition temperature (T g ) (107–115 °C), and thermal stability , and its performance was similar to that of the commercial Novolak phenolic resin. This study presents a promising green and sustainable approach to synthesize renewable phenolic resins based on lignin-derived monomers without using formaldehyde.

The development of eco-friendly adhesives derived from renewable sources to replace conventional petroleum-based alternatives could promote the achievement of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals. Herein, a series of plant oil thermosets were developed from acrylated epoxidized soybean oil (AESO) and a palm oil-based dimethacrylate (MPOEA), and then used as the adhesives for developing formaldehyde-free bamboo particleboards . Concerning the weak cohesion and adhesion forces of the adhesives, 2-isocyanethyl methacrylate (IEM) was incorporated to enhance both the crosslinking density within the thermosets and the bonding strength between bamboo particles and the thermosetting materials. The addition of IEM resulted in a notable improvement in the processability, mechanical characteristics, thermal resistance, and lap-shear strength of the thermosets. The thermosets with optimum components attained a tensile strength of 29.7 MPa, a glass transition temperature of 106.9 °C, and a shear strength of 1.7 MPa onto bamboo. The prepared bamboo particleboards exhibited superior mechanical properties, water resistance, and high-temperature resistance.
